Thank you to Maarten Sneep and Severin Obertuefer for help with my "Newbie cant get \externalfigure to work" It seems likely that problem arose because of some coding errors and also because I am using an old (1999) version of ConTeXt (part of 4TeX5.0 (NL Tug)). So I am trying to upgrade. I am now trying to run ConTeXt from TexLive 7 CDROM, TexLive says ... "Select a Tex-oriented editor" I chose WinShell To run Context, I made a WinShell User Defined Tool, as follows. In Options => General => Userdefined I did ... exefile = pdfetex ... cmd line = &cont-en When I run that tool I get One or more errors occurred! Please check the options! Now I am stuck again Your suggestions gratefully received Richard Hardwick

BUG in latest ConTeXt beta?

Hello, I just downloaded the latest ConTeXt beta (2003.4.29), and I spotted a bug in lang-grk: the headtexts are defined for s!fi, not for s!gr (also, the package subtitles reads "Uralic" instead of "Greek" languages) ... -- Giuseppe "Oblomov" Bilotta

Dear ConTeXticians, I'm learning to use ConTeXt and the main problems I have with ConTeXt are related to fonts. I need to use utf-8 for my documents, since it is the proper way to handle polytonic Greek, Spanish and German in a single document without having to use strange input methods. I was told that it is possible to use utf-8 in ConTeXt (although Greek isn't defined for utf-8 yet), but I don't know how to enable this feature. Which command can I use utf-8 in my documents? (I know \enableregime, but it doesn't work with option unicode). Another problem is the fontencoding: I'd like to use the cm-super fonts, but if I try to use \setupencoding[default=ec] I get a recursive error with some documents (but this is probably due to the wrong document syntax) or the document fonts are the standard cm fonts in OT1 encoding, what is probably related to the last problem. I cannot invoke other fonts than \setupbodyfont[ber,pos]. I use the MikTeX total distribution and with pdfLaTeX all installed fonts work fine. With ConTeXt if I use \setupbodyfont[palatino], either I get an error from maketfm that doesn't know how to make ec-uplr8a or in other documents the variant palatino for bodyfont seems to be unknown. I'm extremely confused about how ConTeXt works with the installed fonts (probably I don't have the required knowledge to understand it) and actually I don't know how LaTeX mangages the available fonts, but it works. The above question is not how to install new fonts or even how ConTeXt manages fonts. The only thing I'd appreciate to know is the most simple procedure to invoke each installed font on my TeX distribution within ConTeXt. Many thanks for your help, Pablo

Magazine: OpenType Pro fonts in ConTeXt

Hi ConTeXters. I've finally documented some font support macros and typescripts that I've been working on. I collected the ideas in a MyWay magazine: <http://homepage.mac.com/atl/tex/OpenType.pdf> (782 Kb) The companion files are on the site as well: <http://homepage.mac.com/atl/tex/OpenType.zip> (25 Kb) A web page to hold all this stuff is forthcoming. The best way to describe what it does is with the abstract: This is a summary of issues encountered and solutions implemented in order to support some advanced OpenType features in ConTeXt. This article describes an accompanying package that addresses installation (using TeXFont), accommodating extended opticals families, and some ``pro'' font features. The extended character set afforded by pro fonts enables support for comprehensive small caps, old-style figures, and the use of greek glyphs to give workable math fonts. Although the typescripts and commands are described together, certain features (like variant encodings for TeXFont and the idiosyncratic method for creating new math fonts) can be used independently of the other features described. Thanks to all. That gives me some leads. I wanted to try something using your advice but in the mean-time decided to typeset my document in lucida instead of comp modern. My installation just won't do it. So I am struggling on this and leave the graphs to later. I stand corrected, the idea is to have a basket with shapes and another basket with arrows. Pick on the fly the necessary pieces and assemble them in a chart, place the chart in a figure environment and put a numberd legenda underneath of it. -- Hm, I would not know how to achieve this without tweaking the sources... Newbie cant get \externalfigure to work Just starting with Context I'm using 4TEX 5.0 (ver June 1999) I want to make a pdf document with some pictures In LaTex, this (postscript) works; \documentclass[a4paper]{article} \usepackage[dvips]{graphicx} \begin{document} \frame{% \includegraphics{DSCN0043.eps} }% Some text \end{document} I try the same thing in Context and I get an empty box with 3 lines of text "name: dummy" "file: DSN0043" "unknown" Heres my script: \setupoutput[pdftex] \useexternalfigure [appleblossom][DSCN0043] [type=eps,width=.4\makeupwidth] \starttext \startfiguretext [left] [fig:appleblossom] {none} {\externalfigure [DSCN0043] [type=eps,width=.4\makeupwidth,frame=on]} Some text \stopfiguretext \stoptext log file says ConTeXt ver: 1999.5.11 fmt: 1999.6.4 int: english mes: english ...snip... systems : begin file 2Context at line 23 figures : figure DSCN0043 can not be found Thank you for your help Richard Hardwick

inverted (french) quotation marks for german documents

Hello, I'm starting with Context and have the following question. I want to achieve the inverted (french) quotation marks for german documents. For example: >>househusband<< With latex or pdflatex I use ">househusband"< or \frqq househusband\flqq but this doesn't work in Context. fillinfield

Dear ConTeXt users, I just started to try \fillinfield as described in the up-todate manual 1998/1. For some names it worked properly, but for my own name it didn't. Also, I've noticed odd kerning with apostrophes, in both Jenson Pro and, it seems, in your sample on page 1 where the word "Adobe's" looks quite odd. Any ideas what's going on with that? A mistake in the metric files? And how would this be corrected; go into the kerning pairs and adjust them for this glyph? Bruce
