Hello, here a few questions about typing: - Is there a module for pretty-printing C-code? - How could I change the tabulator-width? - First tab is only 7 spaces, the other 8, why? - How could I embed ConTeXt macros? - Where does the vertical space in \framed come from? Is there a mathematica typesetting manual for ConTeXt ?

hi all, I am a newbie of ConTeXt, i'm sorry if my question is foolish. I have two questions: 1. Is there a mathematica typesetting manual for ConTeXt ? There seems no ConTeXt manual focused on mathematica. Or I just need to find a mathematica manual for LaTeX ? 2. I'm running TeTeX 2.0.2 on Debian Sarge, and the version of texexec is 3.1 which I think is out of date, so i tried to update ConTeXt. I downloaded www.pragma-ade.com/context/latest/cont-tmf.zip , and unziped it to /usr/local/share/texmf/, then I ran "mktexlsr" and "texexec --make --all". But when i ran "texexec --version", the version was still 3.1. It seemed that the texexec wasn't updated. Thanks in advance!!

encouraging line breaks

What is the best way to encourage line breaks without hyphenation? I've tried many combinations of \setuptolerances, \clubpenalty, \widowpenalty \emergencystretch, etc. All to no avail. Basically, I've got XML content that is being rendered. Part of that content needs to fit inside a small box at a large font size. (It's a custom command tied to \chapter.) Although a line consisting of a single word followed by copious white space would normally be very bad, in this case it is fine. Below is an example situation where I want the text to be rendered on two lines instead of one. Context, LaTeX, or an XML for academic writing?

Hi, I'm returning to graduate study after a few years out in the workplace. I'm a bit rusty on what good stuff there is out there for academic writing, and after a bit of research I've come up with: ConTeXt, LaTeX or an XML dtd (tbook or DocBook?) plus appropriate tools. I'm ruling out Word (having wrestled with it at work), and am reluctant to use anything similar like OpenOffice. I have used LaTeX for some things in the past. There will a little maths in my writing, but it's not central. Here are my main criteria for choice, in order of priority: 1) future-proofing. ie. I want my text to be always available to me forever, or until I die, whichever comes first. I take this to mean that I want the canonical form of my documents to be plain text of some sort. It also means that the system needs to be widely-used enough that it will be translateable into essential future formats as they arise. 2) semantic rather than layout-oriented markup as much as possible. I'm impatient with, and marginally interested in, layout. I'm very interested in what my text means. As much as possible, I want to set up my layouts early in the piece, and never think about them again. 3) relatively easy integration with some form of bibliographic database(ish) system (bibtex would do). 4) ability to produce pdf's, html, and rtf versions (for interoperation with Word-users) at least. 5) no need for me to write any code. I used to be a programmer, and when I left, promised myself, my wife, and my cat that I would never write a line of code again. I don't mind a bit of TeXish fiddling if *absolutely* necessary. ConTeXt seems to fit the bill for 1,3 and 5. I'm not sure about 4 (html? rtf?) or 2 (I haven't had a proper look at the nature of the available macros yet) . Would anyone with 1st hand knowledge of writing in academia care to comment either on the above or your own reasons for your choice of tools? I am doing my own research on all this stuff, but I know that until I get into the fray, there will be things I haven't thought of. Cheers, CB.

presentation style

Hi there, I used Skdk_style for a presentation, the style file downloaded from the contextgarden.net. It was all fine with the TexExec 5.2.3. I just updated TexExec to 5.2.4 version. However, the active link on the right side stopped working, i.e. after clicking on the title, it wont go to the title page which it was linked to. Also the page number now is explicitly shown on the slides too, as you will see the numbers in black. Attached is just one page from the presentation. Any suggestions how to have it fixed? font mapfiles

I just had to reinstall my TeX installation (upgrade to OS X 10.4). After mucking around with my old TeX, I decided to reinstall, and I hit a problem: even though I ran updmap, ConTeXt doesn't seem to work with the fonts I installed myself unless I include the \loadmapfile [foo] either in the typescript or in the source file. This wasn't the case before. I also tried moving the mapfiles to texmf/fonts/map/ pdftex/context insteadt of just fonts/map/, but that didn't change anything. Am I missing something obvious, or is this the expected behavior? I much prefer to have system-wide mapfiles since I use LaTeX from time to time and want the same fonts available there. They work with plain pdfetex as well, it's just ConTeXt that gives trouble. So my question is: is this the new setup, are we supposed to load mapfiles this way, and what is the advantage over the old method? Thanks! Thomas

how to align footer text

How do I set up the space between the bottom of the page and my footer text? I need to setup a 1 inch margin at the bottom of the page. I need for the pagenumber to be centered and 1/2 inch from the bottom. Here's what I have: \definelayout[MyCustomLayout][ topspace=1in, header=0in, bottomspace=1.0in, bottomdistance=.5in, footer=.5in, footerdistance=1mm, backspace=1.5in, cutspace=.75in, height=middle, width=middle,] \setuplayout[MyCustomLayout] \part{} setupfootertexts[\hfill{}\pagenumber{}\hfill{}][][\hfill{}\pagenumber{}\hfill{}][] The problem with this setup is that the page number appears to close to the bottom of the page.
