I installed texlive 2004 (because I had it on a DVD, thanks NTG!). I got the latest ConText (Aug 31). The first thing I had to do was to setup the proper encoding. For example I had to specify this: \setupencoding[\s!default=8r] % or "ec", if you prefer \usetypescript[berry][\defaultencoding] or ec encoding, works as well. It didn't work out of the box unfortunately. But this seems to get me the URW fonts, not the greatest fonts. It seems the latest tex has something like updmap, whatever that is. Using "updmap --edit" I changed the LW35 setting to ADOBEkb and now I get the built-in fonts I believe. Is that correct? But I still got complaints about this one: Warning: pdfetex (file ptmbi8a.pfb): cannot open Type 1 font file for reading Warning: pdfetex (file ptmri8a.pfb): cannot open Type 1 font file for reading Warning: pdfetex (file ptmr8a.pfb): cannot open Type 1 font file for reading Warning: pdfetex (file ptmb8a.pfb): cannot open Type 1 font file for reading But document displays fine BTW. I fixed that by changing another setting: setting pdftexDownloadBase14 to false. But I'm a bit confused here. I thought Adobe had made those fonts freely available, so shouldn't they be in my tex installation? Disappearing figures

Hello people, I think I spotted a bug either in ConTeXt or in my capability comprehension. Take the following simple code: \placefigure[here][testfigs]{Test cases}{ \startcombination[3*3] {\externalfigure[tests/curves.1]}{Testcase~1} {\externalfigure[tests/curves.2]}{Testcase~2} {\externalfigure[tests/curves.3]}{Testcase~3} {\externalfigure[tests/curves.4]}{Testcase~4} {\externalfigure[tests/curves.5]}{Testcase~5} {\externalfigure[tests/curves.6]}{Testcase~6} {\externalfigure[tests/curves.7]}{Testcase~7} {}{} {\externalfigure[tests/curves.8]}{Testcase~8} \stopcombination } It works --- on the first texexec run. Hello Hans and others, excuse me such a stupid question, but: It there any clear (step by step) description how to add a new font into context? I've already done many googling and "try&fails" but the success was minimal. The typescript definitions in type-enc.tex and type-pre.tex are almost a mystery for me... I hope that there at least a little bit of description on adding fonts... Thanks in advance... -Richard

Some Footnote Questions (from the Wiki)

I've been updating the Footnotes page on the Wiki, and have a few questions as a result: 1.) Footnotes in footnotes in footnotes. Are these possible? When I do something like \footnote{A note\footnote{With a note\footnote{With a third footnote.}.}.}, only the first two notes are included in the footnote block, though the number for the third footnote is generated. 2.) Footnotes as marginals. There was text on the Wiki saying that it's possible to typeset footnotes as marginals, but I can't find any references to this in the ConTeXt manual. Am I missing something? I know it's possible to do marginal notes, but those don't get footnote numbers, and so aren't the same thing.... 3.) Footnotes placed without line breaks. If one does a number of short footnotes, they get set like so: 1. One 2. Two 3. Three 4. Four Is it possible to have them set without line breaks, like this? If so, how? 1. One 2. Two 3. Three 4. Four 4.) Footnote alignment. Currently, footnotes are set so that the left end of the text of the footnote is aligned with the left edge of the text, and the footnote number hangs out into the margin. Is it possible to change this? (For instance, suppose I would like the number aligned to the text-edge, and then a fixed-width space, and then the text?) 5.) In LaTeX, there's a means to place a footnote (and generate a number and reference for the footnote) without typesetting the number in the text, in order to handle cases where the "real" footnote mechanism breaks down. Is it possible to do this in ConTeXt? 6. When I reference a footnote's number using \note[ref], I get the number typeset as a superscript. This looks a little odd to me in sentences such as "See footnote \note[ref] on the previous page" -- it would look better if the number (or symbol) were typeset in the normal font. Is there another way to reference it so as to do that? 7. What does the "location=high" in \setupfootnotes do? Thanks! - Brooks

\limitatefirstline (or slave to the wiki)

Hi all, I've tested the latest version of \limitatefirstline and it still doesn't work as expected. This is really a complex story (problem). - the clip mechanism cuts off the lowest part of some special chars (clipping graphics is easy, but I don't understand what happens here) - text is sometimes cropped at word boundaries (example 110pt), instead of beeing clipped The example file is appended and I use the latest beta. There is no timeline, so fixing is not that urgent. And yes, I've cancelled my hollidays and will live for the wiki only from now on :) wiki, wiki, wiki,.... Using newly defined sections

Hi, I'm a ConTeXt newbie. I've read the read the chapter of the manual on sectioning. I understand that it is possible to create a new type of section using \definesection and setup section but how do I insert an instance of my new section into my documents? With predefined sections I can use commands such as \section, \chapter, etc.. The reason I want to define and use a new section is so that I may use it as a substitute for LaTeX's \author. I'm publishing an academic journal for which I need to be able to include author's' names in the header and in the TOC. Defining a new section seemed to be the obvious solution, but I don't know how to put it into practice. If create a new section how do I put it to use in my documents? Any suggestions? Elliot
