Need more documentation on tables

Ok, even with the wiki and all the manuals around (which are getting obsolete, too) there is definitely too little documentation on the various tabulation formats. The biggest problem is that each table type has its ability, but there is nothing that can do everything. Simplest example, I'm currently having a problem using a start/stoptabulate (which I need because \RC & friends don't work in start/stoptable) but I don't know how to span multiple columns (which can be done in start/stoptable with \use, which doesn't work in start/stoptabulate) What am I supposed to do? -- Giuseppe "Oblomov" Bilotta

lilypond inclusion

Dear list, especially Hraban, who had asked for sth like this, I had tried sending this yesterday, but with the pdf output included, it was too big for the list. In any case, please find enclosed a tentative lilypond inclusion file and a sample file. The whole thing basically works (though support for non-pdf versions is currently absent, but should be relatively easy to implement), but I'm sure I've taken a non-ConTeXt-way at more than one place and I have a few problems, most of them lilypond-related. The first three are strictly ConTeXt-related, though: - I can't include blank lines in \startlilypond...\stoplilypond, because in the buffer I will get a \par for that. There is probably some easy way around this, but I haven't found the idiom yet. - Currently, the whole generation only works with shell_escape=t. Is there a way to use the automp mechanism for other external programs, such as lilypond, as well? It would also save quite some time to only typeset each piece of music only once. - How can I detect whether a pdf file contains multiple pages? - I have only tested the system on my Tiger installation. I'd like to know if it works for others, too. - When typesetting a longer block, I'd like to tell lilypond how much space there is left on the first page, to have music break across pages smoothly with the text. - When typesetting a fragment, I'd like to somehow get a proper baseline from lilypond. I have neither found out how to ask if there is more than one line typeset, nor for the baseline (let's say the bottom line of the staff), which obviously depends on the music actually set. The sample file uses an explicit \lower command with a trial-&-error value. I assume that the lilypond TeX backend gives me something that could be useful here, but I haven't analyzed it in detail. regards, Christopher

Complex layout question

Hi all, I have a LARGE (we're talking about the hundred scale) number of floats I would like to distribute across a document. These are paired (a table and a figure). The layout that results from coupling them side by side doesn't satisfy me, so I was looking for a different approach. I would like them to be distributed across the pages by placing the tables at the top left and the figure at the bottom right, text flowing around them. Since there is a very large number of floats, I would like this placement to be automatic: "From now on, do this until you run out of text/floats" I already did something like the following \newcount\curvenum \global\curvenum=1 \def\newpar{ \oldpar \glet\par\oldpar \input tests/curves-\the\curvenum.tex \global\advance\curvenum1 \ifnum\curvenum<8\let\par\newpar\fi } \let\oldpar\par \let\par\newpar to "delay-load" floats, since loading them all at once fills up the main memory. startlines space width

I am having problems with startlines. I'm using space=yes to preserve space characters. This works fine with default ConTeXt lm/cm font. When I use a font I've imported, however, the spaces aren't quite wide enough. I can fix that with \def\normalspace{\char32}, but then I have problems with embedded floats. What do I need to fix so that the default \def\normalspace{ } has the correct width for the current font? Cobby, In amsmath, there is \begin{smallmatrix} \end{smallmatrix} Don't know how in Context. I'll find out. Does anyone on the context list know how to do this? Switching to smaller font more thoroughly

For a particular table, I need to switch to a smaller body font. Currently I'm using {\tfxx \placetable etc \par} but this way the math in the table doesn't get switched. Is there a way to make a more thorough switch? I tried \switchtobodyfont but it didn't work ... -- Giuseppe "Oblomov" Bilotta

Strange ... this simple document \starttext \startformula a^2+b^2 = 1 \stopformula \stoptext says the formula had to be deleted for lack of symbol fonts ... do I have a flaky installation? -- Giuseppe "Oblomov" Bilotta
