hi, 1. what's the equivalent of the \usepackage{fullpage} for ConTeXt? 2. it would be convenient if LuaTeX supported typescripts like XeTeX does instead of having to define font synonyms, e.g., \definetypeface[mainface][rm][Xserif][Warnock Pro] \definetypeface[mainface][ss][Xsans][Cronos Pro] \definetypeface[mainface][tt][Xmono][Inconsolata][default]%[rscale=0.9] % use only for Monaco %\definetypeface[mainface][mm][Xmath][palatino] \definetypeface[mainface][mm][math][palatino][default]%[encoding=texnansi] \setupbodyfont[mainface, 13pt]

mpost finds BAD TFM

NASTY PROBLEM WITH READING TFM FILES IN LATEST METAPOST A nasty problem has surfaced that Taco Hoekwater cannot solve, because it does not occur on his system. My system is Apple Macintosh 10.5.6 and I am using the command "sh build.sh" to compile metapost-1.101. After compiling and generating with "mpost --ini mpost" the error message below result when calling "make" in the manual-directory of the distribution. It signals a bad tfm file, I guess because the wrong number of bytes is read. Some 16/32/64 bit issue perhaps? Taco has not found it and as his compile now runs "lint-free" it is difficult to imagine what can be wrong. Are there people in this group (preferably on Macintosh) who find the same thing happening? And then are far more apt with debuggers than I am? Many thanks in advance. different behavior between xetex and luatex

Hi, all. I expect different output in xetex and luatex using context. and I think the problem is quite serious although I do not speak Turkish. in turkish, fi can not be treat as ligatures and I can see luatex handle that quite well. however, in xetex, fi are treated as ligatures. I attach the files and output here. I don't know it is a bug in xetex, context or dvipdfmx:( Yue Wang

distributed / parallel TeX?

Hello, We've been using TeX to typeset a 1200-page book, and at that size, the time it takes to run becomes a big issue (especially with multiple passes... about 8 on average). It takes us anywhere from 80 minutes on our fastest machine, to 9 hours on our slowest laptop. So the question comes up, can TeX runs take advantage of parallelized or distributed processing? As many in the computer industries are aware, processor speed (clock rate) has plateaued; it is not going to continue rising at the rate it had been. Hence the common move to dual-core, quad-core, etc. machines. But applications in general cannot take advantage of multiple cores to speed their work unless they are architected to take advantage of them. We googled around a bit but were surprised not to find any real references to efforts at running TeX in parallel or on distributed networks or clusters. Wouldn't this be something that a lot of people would find useful? Or does everyone only use TeX for typesetting short papers? Sure, you can use manual tricks to speed up TeX processing. You can "comment out" sections of a document, or select them via modes. But then you have to remember where you did the commenting out, so you can reverse it. And you have no guarantees as to whether the inclusion/exclusion of section B will affect the layout of section C or not. Wouldn't it be nice if TeX (or a TeX wrapper, or macro package, or "typesetting system") could take care of this for you? What if you had a language -- or a few extensions to existing languages -- to give your typesetting engine hints or commands about where to split up your long document into fairly-independent chunks? What if you designed your document specifically to be typeset in independent, parallel pieces so that you could guarantee that you would get the same result for section B whether or not you were typesetting the whole book at the same time? What if the typesetting system automated the stitching-back-together process of the chunks, gathering page reference info from each chunk to inform the next iteration of typesetting the other chunks? Has anyone been working on this already? It seems like it must have been discussed, but I don't know where to go to look for that discussion. Thanks, Lars

lm bug?

hi here is a image of 4 pdf file. a.pdf is compiled using lm fonts under mkii b.pdf is compiled using lm fonts under mkiv c.pdf is compiled using cm fonts under mkii d.pdf is compiled using cm fonts under etex+dvipdfmx So I think there is some problem with lm otf fonts (or maybe mkiv do not embed the hinting correctly? First, I have context-minimals installed on Windows XP, SP2, Intel Pentium D (3.2GHz), 2GB of RAM. My current ConTeXt version is "2008.11.10 21:40". I don't have the problem when I run "texexec test.tex", only when I run "texexec --lua text.tex" or "context text.tex". I previously had something like 2008.10.31 installed. That version did not have this problem. I tried both of Mojca's suggested sequences above and neither had any effect on the problem. With a test.tex file of this: \starttext Hello, world! \stoptext the resulting PDF file has two pages. The first has "H e l" spread across the middle of the page, and the second has "l o , w" spread across the page. The characters are of the expected size, just spread out. If I add "\setupbodyfont[lbr,6pt]" at the beginning of test.tex, then I get a single page with "Hello," and "world!" spread out across the page in two lines of small characters. If I add "\showgrid", then the resulting page has only one full-width horizontal grid line where without the --lua option, I get 41 horizontal grid lines. (At the default font size.) Beginner help: horizontal line

Hi, I would like to be able to draw a line in the footer of every page. If I try to use setupfooter with before=\thinrule or before=\hrule I get some unexpected results. I want the line to span only the width of the body but thinrule aligns it to the left from the left edge. \hrule spans the entire page. I don't want it spanning accross the margins. About Times!

Hi all! Okay, that pun was not that good. Anyways... For the first time ever I'm not using one of my own fonts for a document project. I was wondering about Times. The font itself, installed with ConTeXt. So, I tried using the following in my document: \usetypescript[times] \setupbodyfont[times,12pt] It changed to a Times font. Sweet! Now, what sort of Times font is it? :-) Where is it from? Who did it? Has it to do with those Gyre fonts I keep reading about? I need to... well, no, I just like to know these things when it comes to my documents, especially when they are aimed at publication. Thanks! Jeff

Context minimals and BIBINPUTS

Hi, Why is BIBINPUTS not set in texmf/texmf.cnf in context minimals? I know that the minimals do not ship with any bib file, but even then, I think that we need BIBINPUTS = .;{$TXRESOURCES}//;{$CTXDEVTXPATH};$TEXMF/bibtex/bib// in texmf.cnf. Comments? Aditya
