columns and pictures

(Warning: I'm a ConTeXt newbie. I started using ConTeXt specifically because this is quite difficult to do in LaTeX, along with some other DTP-ish things.) I'm trying to place pictures at a specific position on a page in a multicolumn document, something like this (T: text, P: picture): TTTTTTTTTT | TTTTTT PPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP TTTTTTTTTT | TTTTTT PPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP TTTTTTTTTT | TTTTTT PPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP TTTTTTTTTT | TTTTTTTTTT | TTTTTTTTTT TTTTTTTTTT | TTTTTTTTTT | TTTTTTTTTT How can I do this in ConTeXt (if it's currently possible)? -- Brian P. units and decimal separators

Hi ConTeXters, How can I get ConteXt to typeset numbers as it should be done in french in which we use a comma and not a point to separate units and decimals ? That is when I write \mathematics{5,3} I want to have 5,3 and not 5, 3 (with a small space between the comma and the 3), as it is when I use the english separator, a point. Cheers, Seb.

Balancing error

Hi all, I got the following error in \startcolumns...\stopcolumns environment: columns : balancing aborted after 100 steps I tried to insert pictures just with \externalfigure in columns (I made tests with \placefigure, but it made some misplaced graphics, the \startcolumnset...\stopcolumnset environment too). By this error I got a picture hanging out from the page. The command \column[preference] before all pictures helped not. How can I avoid this error message and force an automatical pagebreak in column mode? I'm using the latest beta. Greetings Bence

OT Best font for online viewing.

built a document using the encoding for Palatino thus: \usetypescript[berry][ec] \usetypescript[palatino][ec] \setupbodyfont[palatino,12pt] The good news is I got the Palladio version of Palatino according to Acrobat Reader 5.05. The bad news is that the characters are distorted. When I blow them up 400% then they look OK. In particular the capital T looks like someone trimmed part of the top bar with a router. But lc letters look funky as well. I know Lucida Bright is the favorite font for on-line use in pragma-nl. But is there a regular (like, free) Adobe Font that looks OK when used with Acrobat Reader? Or is there some other setup improvement I need to make? In GV the glyphs look a bit ragged but the artifacts like the chopped up capital T are not present. So it is an Acrobat weakness. Mathematica fonts in ConTeXt

Hello everybody, I wonder if someone has used the Mathematica math fonts in ConTeXt? If not, then maybe someone could give me a hint how to write the files needed to enable the usage of them (I have looked in math-tex.tex, math-lbr.tex and so on, but I don't understand how adding support for a new font is done with math fonts) I would really like to use them since they seem to go fine with times and since I am writing Mathematica stuff... Another problem may be that the fonts are available in .pfa format. I did convert them to .pfb's with pfa2pfb and the .pfb files got half the size of the .pfa files (maybe that is how it is supposed to be?) Any help is appreciated, Regards, Micke P

predefined fonts on TeXLive

I'd like to add a section on using TeXLive fonts to my help page. First: listing those which are predefined in ConTeXt. Then: writing typescripts for the others. Since I don't want to write any unncessary scripts, please check this list to see if I've missed anything. This is what I see by looking at type-exa.tex and running some experiments: (1) The default, with no type specification, gives Bluesky Computer Modern. (2) This produces CM-Super Computer Modern: \usetypescript[modern][ec] \setupbodyfont[modern] (3) This produces Palatino (URW Palladio): \usetypescript[berry][ec] % or [8r] \usetypescript[palatino][ec] % \setupbodyfont[palatino] (4) This produces Times (URW Nimbus): \usetypescript[berry][ec] % or [8r] \usetypescript[times][ec] % \setupbodyfont[times] (5) These both produce Times, Helvetica (\ss) and Courier (\tt) from the URW Nimbus collection: \usetypescript[berry][ec] % or [8r] \setupbodyfont[pos] or \usetypescript[berry][ec] % or [8r] \usetypescript[postscript][ec] \setupbodyfont[postscript] * * * That's all I can find. type-exa.tex contains Lucida typeface definitions, but the corresponding tfm's don't exist on TeXLive. Is there some setting to make these work? Similarly, type-enc.tex contains many font synonyms, but the tfm's do not exist and there are no typeface definitions for them. tagged pdf (again)

I'm not on the pdftex list, but I was just looking through their archives and came across this document on the PDF 1.5 spec: http://partners.adobe.com/asn/acrobat/docs/filefmtspecs/ PDFReference15draft.pdf The most notable point of interest to me is on the extensions to the tagged PDF spec (particularly starting on 10.7.4). PDF will now support structured markup for pretty much all of the common structures in ConTeXt, even citations! Any chance we'll finally see pdftex (and later ConTeXt) support this Hans? Bruce
