help! how to get a part title?

What I get from the manual is that part titles are not there by default. How do I get them?? I just want a page with the part title centered more-or-less on the page. Bruce

presentation failure

Hi, I tried to begin a presentation, and tried to learn from the best (Hans Hagen in this case ;-) However, I get a failure with the minimal test case below. Some (I think relevant) fragments of the logs are included (sorry for the long mail). I'm using TeXLive with a recent version of context (see dates in the log). Is this a symptom of updating only part of the setup? If so: what parts should I update to get things to work? Some of you may recall that I had trouble with the pos fonts on teTeX a while ago. I switched to TeXLive and there it works. Will try to find out if the problem is related to Mac OS X or teTeX. In the example I've just sent, I couldn't yet figure out why different regions do not have different bg colors. But that's a minor optica problem. Greetings Johannes

Umlaute etc.

Hello there, I am absolutely new to this ConTeXt typesetting system. So I think my problems are boring to most of you ... anyway, they are bothering me :-( I've found in the manual how to produce ä, ö etc ... the german Umlaute. but I wasn't succesfull with the sharp s (ß) ... can anyone help? Second ... I am also using gvim as an editor; is there a package supporting ConTeXt with gvim? Thanks in advance, Raimund

more beginner's problems

Hi, ok, here some more problems which I couldn't find a solution in the manual. First the space between two paragraphs. For example \enableregime[il1] \starttext paragraph 1\par paragraph 2\par \stoptext Should come out like two lines with one empty line in between. but it comes out like two lines with no empty line in between. I tried \paragraph, I tried \par and even nothing but an empty line, processing the file with texexec always "glues" the two paragraphs together like paragraph 1 paragraph 2 What is my fault here? Next problem are the high commatas "blah". In german language the first one has to come on the bottom of the line ... but this way the are typesetted like in english ... above. I tried "`blah"', but this doesn't work either. Also adding \language[de] at the beginning doesn't change that behaviour. Can anybody help? Chinese text failed to flow around pictures

when I tried: \placefigure [right] {Some picture} {\externalfigure[temp][type=jpg,width=5cm]} Blah blah ... % These should be pure Chinese characters. In the generated Chinese PDF file, the paragraph right after the figure just runs over the picture like it were not there. But if I append some English words before Chinese, everything would be fine. And \startfiguretext[left] works as expected. Any ideas? Guo

Do you get an error message? What can happen is: - undefined control sequence : old context - cannot find tfm file: (context filename mapping problem or font not installed) - cannot find pfb file: (probably map file problem of font not installed) - missing glyphs (in log): wrong encoding vector Hans

Switching form portrait to landscape and back to portrait

Dear list, I am struggling with a document, where from time to time a landscape page is inserted. \chapter{One} running tex A4 \chapter{Two} landscape table A4 \chapter{Three} running text A4 It sounds maybe stupid, but I tried different variations and I do not get what I need ... How do I setup a correct switching? Thanks for advice! Willi

footnote control

Dear Cabinet, A couple of footnote questions: 1. Is there an option for choosing one's own reference mark for any given footnote, like in Plain? 2. Is there a conversion option for the famous nine reference mark sequence (\fnsymbol in LaTeX): star, dagger, double dagger, section, inverted `P', parallel, star-star, dagger-dagger, double dagger-double dagger ? I did not see it in the manual. 3. Is there a way to control the distance between the footnote rule and the firstline of the footnote? 4. ConTeXt places the footnote reference mark just on the outside of the margin. Can I place it inside? Can I indent the first paragraph of the footnote with the reference mark (like in LaTeX)? Unrelated: Can I make an entire document default to oldstyle numbers? (Probably not, since Knuth mapped these glyphs in a strange way). That's the end of the rain shower for now, but I'll be back with more I'm sure;-) Idris
