[Q] (newbie) typesetting layer to column

I'm giving ConTeXt a first go in typesetting a diploma. I've figured out that I'd like to try to typeset to a five-column grid. Most of the stuff should be centered against the third column, while some stuff should be centered to the second and fourth column. This makes for a very boring diploma, but that's beside the point at this stage. I want 1-inch borders throughout, so before \starttext, I have \setuplayout[paperheight=29.97cm,paperwidth=21cm,leftmargin=1cm,rightmargin=1cm,header=1cm,footer=1cm,textwidth=19cm,textheight=27.97cm] (I pretend that marginpars don't exist. I'm sure they'll come back and haunt me). Furthermore, before \starttext, I set up the layers I think I need with \setuplayout[grid=yes,columndistance=12pt,columns=5]\showgrid \definelayer [text] \setupbackgrounds [text] [background=text] (The showgrid is there because I like to see what I'm doing). Then I have, say, \setlayer[text][column=3,line=7]{Diploma awarded to} what do I say in order to have the text centered relative to the column? and on a sitenote, I'd like to have a frame around the entire page. Preferably, I'd like to be able to place it using numerical coordinates (absolute or relative, set to a layer or not). Hi all, Is it possible to place some text in two columns into either the table or figure environments without the columns getting ignored. I have some data which I do not want to put in table form but require it in two columns with either a figure ot table label at the bottom. For example a c b d Table x: foo Will this have to be done manually ?? Also, I'm having some problems with using columns, what is happening is that whenever the columns finish the text afterwards runs off the end of the page. I'm using \startcolumns[n=2, tolerance=verytolerant] Thanks Adam

Help Wanted: Apple Preview.app and Metafun Manual

Hi all, We need your help in tracking down a possible bug with the Apple Preview.app when printing the Metafun manual (pdf) <http://www.pragma-ade.com/general/manuals/metafun-p.pdf> from page 37 onward. We (and Apple) would appreciate it very much if some of you would do tests on different printers and submit a report on the survey form posted at <http://latex.yauh.de/survey/survey.php?SURVEY_ID=14> Josh Carter made the original discovery and did tests on the following: ----------- HP Color LaserJet 4600dn - Printing page 1-100ish (my original print job), A4 paper scaled to letter: fuzzy pages from page 37 (physical 41) on. - Page 37 only (scaled): fuzzy. - Page 37 only (A4 cropped to letter): fuzzy. HP LaserJet 4050n: - Page 37 only (scaled): fuzzy. - Page 37 only (cropped): fuzzy. Epson Stylus Photo 2000P (note: NOT a PostScript printer): - Page 37 only (cropped): fuzzy. All were printed from my PowerBook G4/550; 512MB/30GB; MacOS X 10.3.2; latest available drivers for Color LaserJet 4600 and Epson 2000P, built-in system driver for LaserJet 4050. Update problems: TOC

Hello, all ConTeXters! I finally got around to trying TeXLive2003 and the ConTeXt there. The good news is that it installs into Windows2000 like a charm and all the old font woes are now past worries, the fonts worked the first try. After installing TeXLive I downloaded the newest ConTeXt from Pragma's pages and it seems to be a working installation, too. However, I have a problem to which I didn't find a solution in the mailing list archives: The Table of Contents doesn't work and that hangs the whole thing. If I get rid of the command \placecontent, everything works perfectly, but once I try to compile the file(s) with a TOC, this is what I get: myContents : - Table of contents (./pr-03.tuo ! I think I remember a file explaining how to do this in Context but I can't find it now. Can anyone tell me the code to use or give me the url of the file (if I am not just imagining this). reverse order sorting

Am I right? I still do not have insign to setup option passing and parsing mechanism in ConTeXt macros, but who knows, the implementation might be very easy. I would need it for sorting simple scoring points. Using external (Perl or XSLT) engine ia like a hammer to mosquitos. I can solve to problem by forward sorting and TeX macro language but Perl solution is more effective. Thank you Vit Zyka

Installing 3rd-party metapost macros

Hello all, I'm still new to ConTeXt, so this might seem trivial to you... As I would like to create circuit diagrams without leaving TeXShop, I downloaded and installed the mpcirc Metapost macro package. When trying to compile, however (using \startMPinclusions input mpcirc; \stopMPinclusions), ConTeXt fails with an error message saying " TeXExec 4.0 - ConTeXt / PRAGMA ADE 1997-2003 metapost : mpgraph format : metafun This is MetaPost, Version 0.641 (Web2C 7.5.2) (/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex/web2c/cp8bit.tcx) (mpgraph.mp (mpcirc.mp (ttex.mp) (circlib.mp >> circlib.mp >> circlib.mpx ! Unable to make mpx file. l.39 def Eplus_ = btex $+$etex enddef; Transcript written on mpgraph.log. error in metapost run : mpgraph.mp:39" Enabling \write18 and changing the MPXcommand to texexec --mptex didn't help. I would be very grateful if someone could tell me how to get mpcirc (and maybe even featpost) up and running. I'd also like to know how to enable margin kerning (I tried \setupalign[hanging], didn't work). BTW, I'm running the latest i-installer version of teTeX (including the ConTeXt updater, stable version) on OS X 10.3.2. Best regards, Sebastian

another question about itemize

Hi Contex'ers, As we are considering itemize, does anyone by any chance know how to tackle this problem? Problem with \startitemize

I'm having a problem with \startitemize. My code is \startitemize[n,columns,four] \item $ S \rightarrow ACaB$ \item $Ca \rightarrow aaC$ \item $CB \rightarrow DB$ \item $CB \rightarrow E$ \item $aD \rightarrow Da$ \item $AD \rightarrow AC$ \item $aE \rightarrow Ea$ \item $AE \rightarrow \epsilon$ \stopitemize and for some reason the rest of the section and the next section continues of the page that the above list is rendered upon. It syncs up on the following section, but it's kind of unacceptable as you may have figured. I have not tried to find a small example that reproduces this as I figured I'd ask if this has happend anyone else before delving into a debugging session (I really don't have the time necessary), nikolai P.S. My first guess was that the math was messing it up somhow, but it fails for simple A, B, C replacements for the above \item's.
