pgf now supports context

Hi, The new version of pgf (1.09) comes with Context support! If you are using the stable version of context, you can download the 1.09 release from the pgf sourceforge website. Read this thread, if you want to use this version http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thread_id=1590486&forum_id=477363 This version does not work with the latest beta. However, Till Tantau has modified pgf so that it also works with the latest beta. Right now, this is only available through CVS http://sourceforge.net/cvs/?group_id=142562 For those who do not know about pgf, it is a graphical system similar to metapost. It runs from inside tex (I think using specials). It is not as powerful as metapost, but has better support for some tasks than metapost. Hi all, As requested some time ago on this list, Asymptote 1.14 (a modern MetaPost replacement) now supports alternate TeX engines via the -tex option: -tex engine TeX engine ("latex|pdflatex|tex|pdftex|none") ["latex"] Other engines (presumably including ConTeXt) can easily be added in settings.cc. General affine transforms and clipping of labels is now implemented via PostScript or PDF specials (as appropriate). So if ConTeXt can handle TeX specials, adding support for it should be straightforward. We also input the tex graphics and picture packages; presumably something like them is accessible to ConTeXt too. If someone comes up with a diff for ConTeXt, please post it (as a patch under the link News) at asymptote.sourceforge.net Regards, -- John Bowman University of Alberta

absolute positioning of figures

Hi to all, In case of presentations sometimes one has to combine many figures in the page, maybe overlapping for some parts. Something very easy in powerpoint. What's the best technique? Taking a look at the wiki and ot "It's in the details" manual it seems that layers, which can be placed according to absolute positions, are the ConTeXt solution to the problem. Is it so? I was in fact considering to create a simple python GUI app to allow a visual control on position of figures on a page, outputting ConTeXt code to be copied and pasted. aux files organization

Hi to all, compiling a conTeXt file means generating 6 auxiliary files. This means that that if I have 4 related .tex files in a folder I will have 24 aux files. Is there a way to specify a folder where to place them in order not to clutter my project folder? (The ideal would be that the aux would be put in a subfolder of the folder containing the tex file). Hallo! I searched some of the first (p. 8-9) commands used in 'the details' in setup-en.pdf. But I didn't found \showgridboxes \setlayer \definelayer \layoutcolumnoffset ... Shouldn't be ALL the commands listet in setup-en.pdf? How is this document created? Wolfgang

But I would like to know, how setup-xx.pdf is updated. The commands in 'the details' are rather old. As the other Wolfgang explained, the source of all this is a xml-file 'cont-xx.xml'. Is this file updated by hand? Who does this? Hans alone? I guess, the commands shown in texshow are depending on the same file. Btw. for me (MSIE 5.5) the texshow page is not working. I see the left frame and the right only for home, help and special. For all commands (server or dns not found). With wget I got all the stuff, but the language is sort of random. Sometimes I got en, sometimes other. May be I got the last selected language. Wolfgang

Lists of cross-references

Hello, I'm working on functions for displaying lists of cross-references between documents and I'm therefore a bit curious to here if others have similar needs. If there are, maybe I should try to make a real module and not just at private hack. Maybe modules for this already exist. A substantial part of my work as software engineer I spend writing and maintaining documents, e.g. 'User requirement specification', 'Functional specification', 'Design specification', 'Test specification', 'Test plan', 'Test results', 'Project plan'. Between these documents are often large number of cross-references, e.g. functions in the FS refer to requirements in the URS, tests in the TS refer to functions in the FS and requirements URS and so on and so on. Make page number appear on top of image

Hi, I want to combine some papers into a single pdf file "with page numbers". I am including the papers using \copypages[filename] However, the pagenumber is not printed when the paper is a scanned copy. I guess this is because the page number is printed and then the scanned image is printed on top of it, thereby hiding the page number. How can I force the page number to appear on top? You mentioned that \underbar (and presumably the others I mentioned above) are macros taking arguments e.g. \acommand{...}. However presumably something like \midaligned{...} is also a macro requiring an argument, but this works as a \defineXMLgrouped and as a \defineXMLargument - why does it work with both? The manual "XML in ConTeXt" very briefly sketched over these XML commands and I can see great potential to use them directly on XML to generate ConTeXt for PDF rather than the XSLT/XSL-FO route which seems to be gaining momentum in much of the industry. I don't suppose there is another more detailed document which elaborates on the XML commands, and how you may determine which of these is most appropriate for what kind of ConTeXt command mapping? Also at the moment a non-mapped element seems to automatically type out its contents as straight text - is there a way to override this behaviour and specify this as an error? (This is rather like the Ruby duck-typing approach - if an XML element is mapped, process it, else it is an error).
