ConTeXt on Debian: The wiki entry

Hi everybody, this mail has a double purpose. At the end, there's a call for testers of a new (planned) Debian ConTeXt package that would be updated more frequently than now (at least in unstable and testing), where ConTeXt is tied to teTeX's or TeXlive's release cycles. But first, I'd like to talk about http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Debian_installation Are some of the people around who wrote this? I found some information in it misleading and in part just wrong (this has already been pointed out two weaks ago by "plink"), and have started to edit the page to change the parts that give us, the Debian TeX maintaines, most headache. But in the lower part, "Steps to finish a first context upgrade", I felt lost. If these steps are really needed, then there's something seriously wrong in Debian's (and probably upstream's) packaging of ConTeXt. Therefore I didn't just change the text to reflect how I think it should work. Instead, we should try to figure out together whether it in fact does not work as it should, and then fix the Debian packages (hopefully still possible for etch). So the specific question I have are: - Is it intended that context formats end up in $TEXMF/web2c/pdfetex/? If yes, why is that so? If not, we should rather find out why it happens and fix it. - Why does it make a difference if the formats are created by fmtutil instead of texexec (Except for the output directory)? Should the upstream packaging be changed so that fmtutil is never used, but texexec, or should fmtutil be fixed to produce the same as texexec? Finally, here comes Norbert Preining's Call for Testers: Dear all! We = Debian TeX maintainers searching for users of the Debian Operating Systems which are also using ConTeXt. Currently Debian etch (testing) and sid (unstable) contains packages for TeX live 2005. But this contains a bit old ConTeXt version, so users are asking us to update ConTeXt. We have prepared a updated ConTeXt package for Debian, based on the latest released version (2006.08.08), and would ask you to help use testing, as we are not experienced in ConTeXt type settings. I checked some simple documents from the ConTeXt Garden, and they worked, but more detailed testing would be nice. If you have interest, please contact us at debian-tex-maint(a)lists.debian.org or, if you have a bit experience, you can straight away add deb http://www.tug.org/texlive/Debian/ context/ to your /etc/apt/sources.list file and install context. Spacing after defined word: beginner's question

This must be a beginner's question, but I can't find the answer to it in the manuals... Take this ConTeXt source: -- \def\Acme{% {\ss\sc ACME}} Welcome from \Acme. \Acme make fine products. -- When this is made into a PDF, it looks like this: -- Welcome from ACME. ACMEmake fine products. -- - because I didn't have a space in the definition, I don't get a space in the second sentence, but the period didn't interfere with the execution of the first occurrence. But if I put a space in the definition after the 'E', I get this: -- Welcome from ACME . ACME make fine products. -- - and there's a space after the first 'E', which I don't want, even though there is now a space after the second... What am I doing wrong?

Installing Cyrillic font

Hello I'm looking for help with installing the Adobe Times font with Cyrillic support. I have TIR_____.PFB and all other companion files. It surely contains Cyrillic glyphs because I can type Russian using a font viewer. I run the texfont utility as follows texfont -fontroot=e:/texmf --sourcepath=. --vendor=adobe --encoding=t2a --collection=timescyr --makepath --install and it performs good. But created t2a-adobe-timescyr.pdf test file shows no Cyrillic glyphs (it seems like there are vacant empty spaces from 192 to 255). Also I cannot make use of Russian in my context scripts. (Latin goes well) I'm ready to send any additional relevant info. Best regards, Vyatcheslav Yatskovsky

Dear Aditya Thank you for your tip. After adding the line "\setupbackgrounds[header][text] [bottomframe=on,topframe=on]", I got lines of whole length. However, [rule=on] option only draw vertical line as long as the paragraph not to the bottom. Please test once more using a short paragraph(3-4 lines) instead of \knuth. Thank you again. Again, after all the helpful comments from Taco, Hans, Mojca, Aditya, I have redone all the packaging: context: everything but the cow fonts and the tipsandtricks.pdf context-nonfree: cow fonts a long list of pdfs from the web site: aleph.pdf mfonts.pdf mtexfont.pdf show-dem.pdf show-pap.pdf cont-eni.pdf minstall.pdf mtexutil.pdf show-exa.pdf show-pre.pdf cont-enp.pdf mmakempy.pdf mtexwork.pdf showfont.pdf showunic.pdf eppchtex.pdf mp-cb-en.pdf roadmap.pdf show-gra.pdf tiptrick.pdf example.pdf mp-ch-en.pdf setup-en.pdf show-mag.pdf metafun-p.pdf ms-cb-en.pdf show-art.pdf show-man.pdf metafun-s.pdf mtexexec.pdf showcase.pdf show-not.pdf So I hope this should give a quite complete and useful base for context. I also extended the copyright file to include the statements by Taco, and some more remarks. Still I hope that one of the next releases of ConTeXt will contain some sort of MANIFEST.foobar as I suggested. The wording is also improved I hope, so now for all the Debian guys: Can you please take a look at the package, what you think, as I plan (as you see from the version number) to upload it soon. Hi all! I re-repacked the stuff and now there are 2 packages: context context-nonfree the content is quite easy: Everything from cont-tmf, cont-fnt, cont-ext, cont-img is in context, BUT the list of files attached in MANIFEST.nonfree which are in context-nonfree. context suggests context-nonfree I plan to add a lot of documentation files from the website to context-nonfree. Files can be moved around at will, let me know. Description of context a bit shortened and less commercial. Otherwise no changes. Same location as usual. Hello All, My project looks like this and all looks well. \usemodule[bib] \startproject cart \mainlanguage[nl] \input cartbiblio % contains \start..\stoppublication \startbodymatter \component cart8 % contains main text *\completepublications % this works* \stopbodymatter \startappendices \completeindex \stopappendices \stopproject However when I move the \complepublications to the \start..\stopappendices like this \usemodule[bib] \startproject cart \mainlanguage[nl] \input cartbiblio % contains \start..\stoppublication \startbodymatter \component cart8 % contains main text \stopbodymatter \startappendices *\completepublications % this does not work* \completeindex \stopappendices \stopproject * *all the references made by \cite are empty ? The log of this run indicates that cart.bbl is not found but in the working example it does not need a cart.bbl file ? Kind regards Wim

\placeformula and $$ doesn't work anymore

Hi all, for some weeks I need to tex formulas again and tried the way I used to do it: \placeformula $$ f(t)={1\over2\pi}\int_0^\infty e^{i(\omega t-kx)} dx $$ It didn't work anymore?!? It doesn't place a number nor does it do the spacing properly. It does work the "context" way using \placeformula \startformula f(t)={1\over2\pi}\int_0^\infty e^{i(\omega t-kx)} dx \stopformula but to be honest that's quit a lot to type. "$$" is just nice and short and all the old documents I wrote wont work anymore... I run This is pdfeTeX, Version 3.141592-1.30.4-2.2 (Web2C 7.5.5) (format=cont-en 2006. 12.4) 4 DEC 2006 21:46 ... ConTeXt ver: 2006.11.29 09:55 MK II fmt: 2006.12.4 int: english/english I would be very glad for some hints. Many thanks in advance. Hubertus
