I really appreciate the response, but I'm afraid I don't understand how it addresses my question. I'm not having trouble with the rotation pivot point (i.e., placement), but instead the order in which rotation and scaling are applied to a figure. I am wanting to rotate a figure within a defined bounding box. Mojca was kind enough to point out the following technique. \scale[width=5in, height=2in]{\rotate[rotation=90]{\externalfigure[yourfig]}} It creates a bounding box 5 inches wide and 2 inches tall, rotates the figure 90 degrees and scales the image to fit in the 5x2" bounding box. This approach meets my needs except that the scaling is applied non-isomorphically if both dimensions are specified for the bounding box. I'm now trying to figure out how to optionally scale the image to fit the bounding box while keeping the same aspect ratio. Any thoughts? Cheers, Mike

Thank you, Hans and Mojca, for replies. The story started in Septemper, 10, when I updated cont-tmf files for my mswincontext. I did it many times (once there was new update available) but this time I'm gone into trouble. Context started producing broken pdfs for every document with third-party font. I spent many days in trying hard to fix the issue, but nothing was helpful. I was suggested many ideas from the community, until Hans and Taco noticed that "the latest cont-tmf is not in sync with binaries"! How could I ever know that, if these files were posted on current CONTEXT distribution page? My further attempts to update luatex binary alone did not succeed. I was very angry. Now I wait till Owners "regenerate the big things" and I can get proven worked version for Windows. Hope it will be soon. -- Best regards, Vyatcheslav Yatskovsky

Dear ConTeXt-ers, I've been thinking for a long time (even before the first ConTeXt user meeting) to organize a little competition to: - promote more wiki/texshow contributions - renew the complete garden design I'm ready to provide the first prize: - free participation at the ConTeXt conference (Bohinj, sLOVEnija, 20.-25. August 2008) - and perhaps TeX user groups could offer one-year membership for some? Patrick could probably apply the design by himself (or someone could help him), so the most important thing would be: find color & image combinations which would look nice on all modules and promote ConTeXt. My first idea was to offer a free context conference to the "best wiki contributor". Hans suggests the same prize for best garden design. However: - to have one or to have two such prizes doesn't make sooo big difference that this would be unaffordable, but I still cannot afford to provide unlimited free conference fees before I know if I will be able to get enough local sponsors to cover all the costs - the designer could be just anyone, not necessary interested in ConTeXt, and not necessary interested in comming to the ConTeXt conference at all To determine the winner, we could post all the submissions to the mailing list and ask for general opinions + have a jury (Hans, Taco, Patrick + some other volunteers/professional designers). I would also suggest that someone would make a poster asking for contributors, which could theoretically be hung up even on public places (I can imagine hanging one at our facult for design for example). My questions: - what do you think the most appropriate prize should be? - how long should we wait? - what to do if we don't find a suitable design? - etc. etc. *** BEST WIKI CONTRIBUTOR *** I'm looking for your ideas here. We certainly need: - more, better and better organized contents on the garden - basically the whole texshow in empty - new test files The problem is that: - texshow has problems (problems parsing the strings, no authentification, no nice overview of modifications, etc.) - texshow needs better support for common attributes (think of style=bold|slanted|italic|... which has the same arguments on more places) - there should be an easier way to submit and test testcases than the current contexttest project on supelec We should support continuos work. For example by announcing best monthly contributor, and also to make the job of the jury easier (whoever the jury would be). Other questions: - what if there will be noone to deserve the prize? - what if there will be three people with approximately the same big efforts? (I don't fear that, but we should write some basic rules to avoid problems later) - what if that person won't be able to attend the meeting? The wiki competition will probably close in June. \MPcolor bug with LuaTeX

Hi, colors defined in gray values give a inverted output in MetaPost with the \MPcolor macro. placing movies

Placing a movie with the following code places the static overlay a bit (too far) to the right, spilling it on the right side out of the frame: \useexternalrendering[sharkfilm][video/quicktime][shark.mp4] \defineoverlay [shark][{\externalfigure[shark-film][width=\overlaywidth,type=jpg]}] \starttext ... \midaligned{%\framed[offset=0pt, strut=no, background= {foreground,shark}]% {\placerenderingwindow[movie][sharkfilm]}}% Is there some spurious space in the code? Perhaps a missing % at the end of a line? I could not spot the culprit in the code, but I might have been looking in the wrong places. Then as an additional question: When running the movie a thin white frame line appears around it. I find it annoying but did not find out how to get rid of it. Nor have I been able to change the background color locally (when leaving out the external figure in the overlay) or get rid of the text "Screen" that appears. I found a macro \setuprenderingwindow but did not find out about the settings it understands. Can someone enlighten me? Hans van der Meer

section title: alignment

Dear list members, My section titles have a gray background of textwidth, as follows: \def\SectionCommand#1#2{\framed[frame=off,width=\textwidth,% align=right,background=color,backgroundcolor=lightgray]{#1\quad#2}} \setuphead[section][command=\SectionCommand,numbercolor=red] That works, except when section titles are longer than textwidth: in that case, the second line is aligned with the number, not the text. How can I get correct alignment? I tried to include \starttabulate \NC #1 \NC #2 \NC\NR \stoptabulate in SectionCommand, but then the background extends too much above and below. I'm sure there is an easy solution? But something I played with once upon a time for much the same purpose. You should take a look at Jonathan Fine's TeX daemon project texd (http://sourceforge.net/projects/texd) if you haven't already - it runs as a pipe (unix) and only loads formats once; it would take a little bit work to get it going reliably with ConTeXt, especially to do so in a way that is easily updated when a new ConTeXt is released, and I'm not sure if Jonathan is still actively working on the project. But it demonstrates an effective approach, which works with Plain (and LaTeX I think). Duncan

Interactive slides---hidden field on every page

Good morning or whatever you have now in Europe. It seems that my mail have come to the list, so I dare to repost it: I'm preparing my slides. Every slide is divided to three parts (backgrounds): text, header, and bottom. I've got the navigation buttons in the bottom. Now I'd like to add one more button that would open a field on the current page---a field containing the list of content. I'd like it to go to the \Topic I want to discuss and disappear. Greek in luatex

Hi all, I've been experimenting with my Greek stuff in luatex, and I think I'm making nice progress. Things pretty much work with Unicode input, and as soon as the kerning problem is solved, I'm very optimistic. Two questions came up for me; I assume the answers are straightforward, but couldn't find anything: 1. How can I remap single characters? Let's say that we have a Unicode character in the input stream that maps to 0x03c3, but I want it remapped to 0x3f2, how can this be achieved? 2. Similarly: if I want to support the legacy input method babel, I need to remap the input stream to the Greek characters (question 1) and also need to feed the font some ligature rules, such as: the combination >a needs to be combined into the character 0x1f00. What would be the syntax and the way to do this? All best Thomas

Recommendations for Speed?

Hello, I've been perusing the list archives for a couple of days now, and reading up on articles (such as Hans' regarding optimizing in TeX and eTeX) to find guidance on a handful of decisions. Our company makes a web-based publishing solution called MemoryPress.com that uses conTeXt for on-demand creation of PDFs which are then converted to jpeg format for display in a web browser. We are currently looking into ways to speed things up and since many of you are far more qualified than I am in this area, I wondered if you might advise me on the following: 1. Is there a way to keep TeX in-memory (i.e. as a server or daemon process) so that it doesn't have to load and reload fonts and the environment? Our system makes repeated requests for typeset documents and we are wondering if there's a way to remove the overhead of re-running pdftex. 2. Among the many different command-line TeX options, what might optimize for speed? I've done some rudimentary benchmarking and found that executing etex (without conTeXt) is much faster than texexec, and wondered if there is any advice in this area. Is there any way to shave off some of the overhead of using conTeXt? 3. I've noticed that there is some kind of caching going on (tui/tuo files?) that helps speed things up after the first run. How can I best take advantage of this facility? What kinds of things will require TeX to start from scratch, vs. use some or all of this cached information? 4.
