Footnotes within "paragraphs in columns" have incorrect width.

G'day. While designing the layout for a cookbook I have used "paragraphs in columns" to place the ingredients and body text next to each other. In order to add some commentary to the body I have been experimenting with footnotes, to place comments at the end of the recipe without getting in the flow of the steps. In any case I seem to have found a bug: when I add a footnote inside the paragraphs environment it retains the enclosing width -- even if placed outside the space where it is defined. The following file demonstrates the issue. I expected to have the footnote full width across the page but, as you will probably see, it is constrained to half the width -- just like the running text. --8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8--- % demonstrate footnote width being crunched by paragraphs in columns \defineparagraphs[Para][n=2,rule=off,align=right] % left flush \starttext \startlocalfootnotes \startPara Hello, world. \nextPara This is some running text with a footnote, to demonstrate the way \footnote{This is a nice, long footnote which should spread text all the way across the page ... but doesn't, giving only the width of the enclosing block.} that the environment shrinks the footnote text flow. \stopPara \startPara I use multiple, consecutive paragraph environments ... \nextPara ... to lay out the ingredients for each step, and the steps sequentially, through the document. \stopPara \placelocalfootnotes \stoplocalfootnotes \stoptext --8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8--- I have ConTeXt from Ubuntu/Hardy, Texlive ConTeXt 2007.09.28-1, from the TeXlive 2007-13 packages supplied by the vendor. This is pdfTeXk, Version 3.141592-1.40.3 (Web2C 7.5.6) ConTeXt ver: 2007.09.28 16:52 MKII fmt: 2007.12.19 int: english/english Is this a behaviour that I am stuck with, or can I get footnotes that expand to full width from within the two column environment? I am not wedded to the "paragraphs" model, and would be happy with a solution that would typeset with the same basic layout as the sample file does. Regards, Daniel

problem with layer: corner doesn't work

Hello, still working on the CD Design, I tried to understand the layer mechanism. After some reading and trying I have found a problem with the parameter 'corner'. Problem with Xetex

Probably I am the most troubled, unsuccessful beginner in this list (it's my <i>fado</i>), anyway: I have two installations of context: one in ~/texmf; another in ~/context to which I switch typing . ~/context/tex/setuptex ~/context/tex. The first one has a problem with 8bit output (\enableregiem[utf8]: it says in the log file: possible problem with 8bit output. Xetex hangs on with: kpathsea mktextfm lmroman... The second installation has another problem with xetex: "could not open config file dvipdfmx.cfg"

How could a typesetting system be today?

Hi, Just because I'm curious: how could a typesetting system like TeX be if it was created today? I've tried google and wikipedia, and all I found different from TeX is a system called 'Lout', but it seems dead. Does anyone knows about novel or interesting ideas that could be used if we would write a new typesetting system from scratch? Thanks for your thoughts, Maurício

Roll-Your-Own Stand-Alone (Was re. ConTeXt ultraminimals)

I'm working on ConTeXt+SciTE-on-a-USB-Stick. A downloadable program is still far off, as is a version that can be put on PortableApps.com, but I've gotten to the point of mapping out the basic parameters: • We need to have a start-up program, which will set up the environment and start SciTE and/or a command prompt. • Legacy-free is nice, but if ConTeXt+XeTeX (which I'll call "mkiii" whether that's an official name or no) requires texexec then we need to include Ruby anyway, so we may as well keep PDFTeX (mkii), BUT: • Since my Windows machine already has Perl, Python, & Ruby, I'm going to defer working on that last point. • In fact, I'm going to defer including SciTE also, until I have a working stand-alone ConTeXt… I've put my rsync invocations on the wiki. (Since the calls are so closely tied to the directory structure of the Minimals, I added them to <http://wiki.contextgarden.net/ConTeXt_Minimals/Structure> as an example of how to use & customize them, but I'll move it if folks think it belongs elsewhere.) Also, the commands I'm using to generate my formats are on that page. Could someone please check them for sanity? --Joel

Format does not match the base files
