Russian/Cyrillic woes - Windows XP

Hello all! I'm stuck: I have to get at least my ConTeXt to typeset Russian. No ifs or buts, it has to compile a file where the text is in Russian. Getting my ConTeXt to do it can involve installing a font or updating or something, as long as I get it to work in my XP. Preferably I should need a fairly out-of-box to remotely set up a working system on a reasonably computer-literate customers XP. All the computers than can be used for the job run Windows XP and the stand-alone distribution. My own XP has a fairly old distribution without Lua, the test computer has the newest possible standalone version with updated ConTeXt (I ran the script that seemed to do the trick). Happened this far: - I figured out that I can get SciTe to show cyrillics if I put a set.character=204 in the user.properties - I deducted that I can get the updated ConTeXt to run MkIV "out-of-the-box" if I dig up the console and command texexec --lua filename - on the up-to-date ConTeXt I've tried all the tricks I found for Russian on the garden (http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Russian) and on the mailing list (a thread from December last year). No luck. (Note. Testing has mostly involved cutting and pasting the full example code into a blank .tex and compiling that into pdf in the way that's appropriate for the instructions.) One of my problems seems to be that the input is not UTF, i.e. I have configured SciTe badly. Or Windows XP just doesn't like UTF, in which case I'm in trouble. It seems to me that if this problem is solved, MkIV would work. I'm not terribly used to working with encodings in general, so UTF is unknown terrain to me and this doesn't make things easier. The other problem is that if I'm running MkII, it seems that I need to install some fonts, but typescripts seem to be of the "email me and you can get a typescript" way. Or then I just can't understand what the text says; since postscript started working by default a few years ago, I've avoided the font department altogether. :/ The third, and very minor problem, is to get the stand-alone to run MkIV/luatex by default. I'm sure there's a switch I can use to tell it to always use luatex instead of pdftex, I'm just too stupid to figure it out myself. And of course I'll only need this if MkIV is the best solution to my problem... If that will solve the problem and if it can be done with minor changes (like adding something to path or something), I'm willing to switch to a different editor for Russian (or, rather, Cyrillic) - especially if that will happily coexist with SciTe. Any hints on what to do next? Mari (Tip of the day: never promise anything to a customer before you've checked that it is doable in reality, not just in specs.)

Hi, with the latest beta of this morning and the latest luatex, a call like texexec --lua --env=mystyle myfile.xml fails, the environment file is not read (there is no error about not finding it in the log). Thomas

Remove leading spaces

When a function is called, I would like to remove any leading space. Then the function can control the spacing. If I don't remove spaces, it then makes a difference whether or not I have a space before the function is called. I would like the output of the following two lines to be equal: This is a \MyFunction[1] test. This is a\MyFunction[1] test. However, they are not because the first line has a space before the function call. \def\MyFunction{\dosingleempty\doMyFunction} \def\doMyFunction[#1]{% \processaction[#1]% [1=>\medspace dog ,% 2=>\medspace cat ,% default=>\ldots]% } \starttext Test1: This is a\MyFunction[1] test. Section format using /def

I, apparently, do not understand the syntax and/or uses of /def. I am trying to make section heads appear in all caps and underlined. I originally tried to just use \setuphead, but found that I using the "textcommand" option I could only either capitalize or underline and not both. I then figured that using a macro was my next best option. Below is what I tried and it does not work. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong? \def\mysectionhead{\WORD\underbar} \setuphead[section] [number=no, textcommand=\mysectionhead, style={\tfa\bf}] Thanks, Mike

Bug? thinrule in natural table & MKIV

I put a thinrule in a table as follows: \starttext \bTABLE \bTR\bTD\thinrule\eTD\eTR \eTABLE \stoptext It worked fine under MKII. However, when I switched to MKIV (both current and beta) I got the following error message: ! Dear Wofgang, I made a sample text by inserting space to the text which you used when you test Korean before. I used un fonts which you can download from KTUG. After you compile it using LuaTeX, you can see some overfull lines which was mentioned by Dr. DoHyun Kim. Thank you for your concern on Korean. tool for reviewing hyphenation

Hello, We have a situation where hyphenation is an issue, due to a 2-column layout where the columns are not very wide. We've done a lot of tweaking of settings for hyphenation and interword spacing, and the result seems pretty good. In particular, there are not many cases of consecutive lines that end with hyphens, and not many cases where a hyphenation occurs over a right-hand page break. The few cases that exist, we have been fixing manually by using \hbox{...} to prevent hyphenation at the trouble spot. But the hyphenation is by nature somewhat volatile, so whenever we change something we would like to be able to easily recheck the hyphenation. And our book is over 1200 pages, so it would be very helpful to have tools to make the checking more efficient. One tool we found was the "evince" PDF viewer in Linux, which highlights all search results at once. So you can search for "-", and it will highlight all hyphens, which makes it easier to scan the PDF visually for hyphenation problems. Still, this approach has its limitations... our layout domain experts don't have Linux machines, and I haven't found a PDF viewer for Windows that can highlight all search results at once. Another approach we wondered about was having TeX highlight the hyphenations... e.g. changed the background color to yellow or red, when outputting a word that's dynamically broken/hyphenated. (Rather like we have TeX output red grid lines to help with debugging layout.) I think we would also want to highlight static hyphens that occur at the end of a line, as in "Niger- Congo," because they have a similar visual impact. Possibly using a different color. This would be an ideal solution, I think, but we don't know how to have TeX detect when a word gets dynamically hyphenated. Another possibility we've looked into is using javascript in Adobe Reader to find and highlight end-of-line (and end-of-page) hyphens. But this approach has proved more difficult than expected... the API and the DOM are complex, and I haven't figured out yet how to access the text of the document to search for hyphens. (The "search" method seems to just go to the first or next occurence, and highlight only one occurrence at a time.) Thanks for any help, Lars
