Aligning titles so that they begin in the margin rather at text edge

Hey all, a very simple problem, really, but one I'm having trouble finding examples for. I would like to set up my titles to begin in the margin, rather than at the text edge, similar to what is found in Bringhurst's _Elements of Typographic Style_. I'm pretty certain the solution is incredibly easy, just not so obvious for newbies like me. I will immediately post the solution to the Titles wiki page. Adv-THANKS-ance, John

2 sets of footnotes?

Hi all, I'm trying to do a (re-)layout for an older book which holds a few challenges for me. Hopefully I can find some help here. In this book I need to track 2 kinds of footnotes, sidenotes and the original page numbering (I don't replicate the old text flow but put comments where pages originally change). My footnotes follow the current layout/flow, not the original layout. My prime issue are having 2 sets of footnotes. One set of numbering (numbered 1,2,3...) is reset every section, which I figured out(\setupfootnotes [way=section]). A second set results out of comments the original Author placed into the margins. They are counted a, b, c... and are reset every page. Both are placed at the bottom of the relevant page. A set of sidenotes in the form "R nnn" is used from 1 to the end of the book to indicate the pages and positions where these sidenotes where placed. Currently I am not linking the second set of footnotes i.e. the author notes and the sidenote counter. Though it might be a nice luxury to generate a list of all author notes. I looked at lists and I suppose footnotes use the list mechanism in the background. But I don't get anywhere with that. Trying to keep track of the author notes, the placing with \placelist[AuthorComment] doesn't seem to work in the example below. Besides, I don't see how they would appear or be placed as footnotes. In short: How do I get 2 sets of footnotes: one per section, one per page? Extensive (sorry) example below. Dear Hans, Thank you for a nice solution. It is really cool! I always wonder what is the limit of ConTeXt. But I think that I am using very small portion of it. Here I'd like to ask one more thing. I downloaded the example of "Euro symbol" animation. Both button "here" and "restart" worked fine. However, a new pdf file of Euro symbol animation which was madden by recompiling the source not properly working in my macbook. "here" button works fine while "restart" lost the position.(just blank window is appeared) I tried a similar step by step drawing and got the same situation. Is it a problem in my machine only? Mac OSX 10.6.4 ConTeXt ver: 2010.06.23 12:45 MKIV fmt: 2010.7.18 int: english/english - this is luatex, version beta-0.60.2-2010070117 Thank you for your help. Best regards, Dalyoung

alloc@0, etc, from plain.tex

There's a plain TeX package (bussproofs.sty from CTAN; I realize that the file ends with ".sty" but it's intended to work in plain TeX) that I'm trying to get working with ConTeXt. I'm stuck at one point though: the package has the statements \def\newcount{\alloc@0\count\countdef\insc@unt} \def\newdimen{\alloc@1\dimen\dimendef\insc@unt} \def\newskip{\alloc@2\skip\skipdef\insc@unt} \def\newbox{\alloc@4\box\chardef\insc@unt} ConTeXt complains because it doesn't know what alloc@0, etc., are. Any advice for how to import this functionality from plain.tex into ConTeXt? thanks, Jesse

Some Experiences

Hi all, I do a lot of LaTeX writing as my stuff is very math intensive, but I have a lot of interest in ConTeXt as I would like my books to look better. Anyway, I try on and off to get ConTeXt running so I can experiment. I just spent a pleasurable day playing. Here is what I found. It was pretty easy to install the newest minimals. I just followed the instructions and installed it in a local place separate from my texlive2009 installation. I spent a lot of time with a direct update of ConTeXt into my texlive2009 folder (yes, I know I was doomed but I was on a roll). I found the usual errors running either luatools --generate or mtxrun --generate and also context --make All the files needed to make this work are actually installed, but the problem is the way luatools finds stuff and caches it. Something is wrong there. The files that are in the folder can't be located. Also, with my local minimals installed and trying to add ConTeXt to my texlive2009, luatools seemed to find the ConTeXt stuff from both minimals and texlive2009. That was not good, but temporarily removing the minimals did not change the bad results, still I have no idea how to get luatools to ignore the minimals folder when it is setting up the cache. Finally, this all started because I am tired of my bad chemical drawings in my books and wanted to use the package m-ch-en in LaTeX. The original context supplied with texlive2009 wouldn't let me compile a m-ch-en source so since I am still heavily using LaTeX, I wanted to update luatex, context etc to see if I could get it to work. I still can't use context from texlive2009, but with my updates I can compile m-ch-en source. So at least a small win. The ConTeXt stuff is fascinating and I am moving towards it, but I need to do it in baby steps and I need to do it with a concomittant LaTeX installation. So I will eagerly await any sort of a fix for a LaTeX/ConTeXt combined world while I continue to learn and move away for LaTeX. As a long time user of LaTeX, I know its limitations very well and ConTeXt will allow me to do more interesting things. Keep up the good work.
