Hi all, is it possible to subtract a featureset that has been applied to a fontfamily? [OT] TeXShop v4.66 adds support for new ConTeXt's syncing method

For those who are interested, the latest TeXShop release provides support for ConTeXt's own syncing method (by invoking mtxrun --script synctex). This supersedes the old syncing method based on Laurens' SyncTeX, which should not be used any more. I have brought TeXShop's page in the wiki up to date (I haven't touched what are currently §1.4 and §1.5), with instructions to get synchronisation to work: https://wiki.contextgarden.net/TeXShop Make sure to read it carefully! I have tested the feature for some time now, and I'd say that it works pretty well (with some caveats, which I have annotated in the wiki). I take the opportunity to thank Hans for being so responsive with the changes in mtxrun necessary to provide this feature, and for patiently bear with my sometimes unclear requests or feedback. I get the impression that \xmldisplayverbatim changes ' (apostroph) into ' and " (quotation mark) into " etc. How can I get rid of this translation? I would prefer to have typeset ' and " instead of the entity representations. dr. Hans van der Meer

nuts.setfield is nil in generic code

Hello, in the generic font loader code `nuts.setfield` is `nil`. This is because in `luatex-basics-nod.lua` there is a wrong assignment for `nuts.setfield` on line 121 (there is no `setfield` at that scope, it should be `direct.setfield`). hang error

Why this: normal plain TeX macro \hang giving an Undefined control sequence error in ConTeXt? This MWE shows it: \starttext \hang \stoptext I would not expect basic plain macro's to crash. If it is intended behaviour I do not think that is the road to go, because this invalidates older documents. But maybe it is just an error in the distribution. dr. Hans van der Meer

Math cases and text in math mode

Hi, I have two separate issues here. First, I'm struggling to get math cases to work. The wiki suggests that the following code \starttext \startformula f(x) = \startmathcases \NC x, \NC if $0 \le x \le \frac12$ \NR \NC 1-x ,\NC if $\frac12 \le x \le 1$ \NR \stopmathcases \stopformula \stoptext should typeset everything after the \NC in text mode, but when I compile it's still in math mode. Is this a bug or is the wiki out of date? Secondly, how can I enter text mode whilst in a formula, whilst also only using the roman font? For example, I would like it so that even if the whole text is wrapped in {\em ...}, the text in the formulae are in roman font. Disable hyphencollapsing for mono

Hi, I would like to disable hyphen collapsing (automatic "--" to endash conversion) document-wide for the currently selected mono font. Consider: \starttext %{\nohyphencollapsing \mono{--} %} -- \stoptext When uncommenting lines 2 and 4, the two hyphens in \mono{--} are not collapsed. How can I configure never to collapse hyphens exclusively in mono fonts? Any help is appreciated. Cheers, Christoph

whiteline before xmldisplayverbatim

I cannot get rid of the whiteline that \xmldisplayverbatim generates before its output. Changing to other \xmldisplay macro's did not change this. How to get rid of the whitespace? names of cached images

Hello list, using conversion=gray.pdf in lmtx the cached images' names have some string in their name. Rolling out a pandoc-context publication workflow in an organization

Dear all, in the last weeks I asked more questions than I normally do. The reason is that my organization is discussing to roll out a markdown-pandoc-context publication workflow. Some time ago we started to use context to produce flyers and some other documents. In fact I was the only one to use it. The results are so good that we discussed how to use it more often. Currently we use LaTeX to produce our legal documents, terms of services etc. With ConTeXt we are able to meet our corporate design guidelines and to produce good looking and individually designed documents. But our authors and editors were not willing to use ConTeXt directly so that we decided to look into Pandoc and use Markdown as authors input markup. Markdown is much better supported by text editors than ConTeXt. The main problem for me is to come up with a good organization of the ConTeXt workflow so that it is easy usable and meets our requirements for quality management. These are quite strict. We are a Debian based cooperative and the majority of our editors also use this distribution on their private computers. Some use a MacBook, only one uses of Windows. For this reason we would like to stay with the Debian ConTeXt, which I never used as it is quite old. The same is true for Pandoc which made some improvements in the last years and also is very old in the current Debian distribution. As we did not decide this issue I can't say how much I have to refactor our styles to meet the older versions of ConTeXt. Apart from this I have to organize our style files and ressources, anyway. In another thread Hans said how to use these folders. Thanks a lot. texmf-local : maybe configurations texmf-project : stuff you're working on (styles) texmf-fonts : fonts you downloaded or bought All our styles and our shared image folder are versioned by git so I think that I either put links into texmf-project pointing to our style repository and to our image repository to have easy access to these ressources no matter how we call context or to put them into texmf-project directly. (We did not decide yet whether we call context from pandoc using a tmp directory for building or directly from our build script. If we use the current lmtx distribution, all editors would have to install ConTeXt with the install.sh script on their private computers, then we would either call a post installation script to clone the repositories in texmf-project or to clone them in another folder and set links to texmf-project. Linking seems better as I am not sure what "context generate" would do with the .git folder inside the repositories. All document projects are in their own repository. Currently we use a build script to call pandoc with an individual set of arguments including a custom context template which is stored in the document repository, also. Inside of this template we include all the environments we need for this particular document. We have a lot of small environments to reuse them in different document types. This is our plan so far. But to role out this successfully I would like to ease the way to a working pandoc-context installation for our editors. Do you have an idea how to do this? I come up with the idea of an "organizational context distribution" that has all requirements preinstalled. That could look like this: We have a repository: hs.lmtx which contains the install script and all our ressources (images and styles). Our editors would clone the repository and just call the installation script to download the lmtx distribution. Afterwards they are ready to start as we would point to the right context executable in our build scripts. Problem: What will happen if our editors do a git pull in hs.lmtx and a "context generate"? There are also concerns if something breaks after updating context with the install.sh. Is there a way to reset the installation to a given point release? How do you solve this in a production environment? On my private computer I sometimes install a new version of lmtx in a "staging" folder try it out and redo updating in my "production" folder. I think I will try this out but I am happy if you have any comments on this. TIA juh

Same in current LMTX and MkIV. - the first line can start one or more lines lower - then the same number of lines is printed over each other at the bottom - it gets worse with footnotes (looks like their space isn’t considered at all) - if the column set doesn’t start at the top of the page, the second column does Hraban \definecolumnset[cgjcolset][n=2] \starttext \chapter{This is a chapter about column sets} \startcolumnset[cgjcolset] \dorecurse{20}{ \samplefile{sapolsky}\par } \stopcolumnset \stoptext

Hyphens broken with lucidaot

Different authorconversion for citation alternatives and bibliographic entries

Hi there, My university has special requirements for the theses I submit. Layout, fonts etc. are pretty straightforward to set up in ConTeXt. The one part I'm struggling with is citations / bibliography. I have to use the german citation style with footnotes. Essentially the first time I cite something, I have to put the full entry in a footnote. From the second time on, I only have to put a shorter entry in the footnotes. I have two problems: 1. I created the publ-imp-deu.lua and publ-imp-deu.mkvi files. If I put them into the ~/bin/context/tex/texmf-context/tex/context/base/mkiv/ directory, I get the following two lines in the log: ``` publications > unknown library 'deu' publications > no data definition file 'publ-imp-deu.lua' for 'deu' ``` If I put them into the directory where my thesis is, they seem to get recognized, but I would very much like to reuse them and not have to copy them to each project directory. What am I doing wrong? 2. Entries in the bibliography and fist time citations must have 'normal' authorconversion, while consequent citations must have 'normalshort'. For consequent citations I defined the 'authortitle' alternative. If I comment out the lines which set up 'normal' authorconversion for the list, everything, including the bibliography and 'entry' type citations get 'normalshort'. Hi, I have two questions regarding endnotes: 1. Is there a way to add a heading automatically to the endnotes placed with \placenotes[endnote]? 2. I reset the endnote number at each part. Is there a way to insert the title of the corresponding part heading to the endnotes? Hello all, this worked years ago with another variable font. But it fails with FiraCode. I’d like to use the Notes and Bibliography style in my physics book, with endnotes after each chapter. I would gladly participate by testing and providing feedback. I am using a patched-together \footnote solution right now, and it is not great. The existing "biblatex-chicago” package might be helpful for development, especially in selecting database syntax and perhaps in designing algorithms. The author, David Fussner, has been maintaining and updating since the first public release in 2008. It the extensive documentation, he invites contact. It looks like a complicated project! I’d be happy to discuss this more at our next Norther Colorado ConTeXt User meeting. Would some time next week work? (Alan, who I met on this mailing list, lives a short bike ride from my house.) When running this mwe with luatex, the command \- could be used to manually break the line, even though it is set up nothyphenated. All, Examining recent log files, I see the message suggestion > use \thinspace instead of \, When was this instituted? What does it mean? Has \, been deprecated? For many years it was recommended as a short form of \thinspace, and implementing the replacement would certainly result in much less readable source. -- Rik

Dear all, how can I use setups in makeups locally? Or do I miss something. In this sample the interlinespace of the coverpage makeup is also used after stopmakeup. Is there a way to define the setups values only locally inside the makeup? We already had a partial case feature but that one is also better. So, still experimental. (3) Already for some 'mails' I mention playing with modifiers in math. The openup varianst are now a bit more tolerant in the sense that they work for more classes. For instance, we can mess with \Umathsupshiftup and such to get some displacement and it can even be done local, but still ... these are normally kind of font drive. So I decided to add a few more parameters, like \Umathextrasupshift for each of the four possible scripts. Basically we can now control quite a lot also because all defaults can be also influenced with \Umath*variant if needed; I probably need to check again if there are any (traditional tex math) hardwired properties. I know that not all of that is really needed (also because much of tex math is chisseled in stone and not supposed to be controlled although in context i suppose we have a bit more freedom) but it simply fit in the luametatex effort to do so. Of course there might be math fields that need such things (so I might add some more modifiers, also because it's kind of fun to do). Therefore, I've tried to adapt the solution from the wiki: https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Grid_typesetting#Placing_titles_on_the_grid The interesting thing is that the section command indeed places the first line on the grid, but using \framed directly does not give the desired results. Dear all, while finetuning a layout I would like to change the align in setupfootertext to right align or outer align as it is a doublesided layout. The default is afaics to align to the middle of the two pages. I would like to change this but there is no align key in setupfooter. TIA juh

setupquotation[method=font] problem

I get no quotation marks at all (and no protrusion) with \quotation{text} using \setupquotation[method=font]. This seems to have started earlier this month, but for the record, I am using ConTeXt ver: 2021.06.24 19:19 LMTX. Wolfgang's example from a related thread earlier this month (https://www.mail-archive.com/ntg-context@ntg.nl/msg98669.html) should have quotation marks and protrusion for the third line, matching the second line. \definefontfeature [default] [default] [protrusion=quality,expansion=quality] \setupquotation [method=font] \setupalign[hz,hanging] \starttext oh hi there “you are so” \quotation{you are so} here here \stoptext Similarly with \setupquote. Hi, I uploaded a new version. I got sidetracked by an experiment. We can read from zip files, but as I had some tar archives I wondered if we could read from them. They happened to be compressed. It uses an already present infrastructure (early mkiv I played a bit with reading from zip files). \starttext \dorecurse{100}{ \input {tar:///e:/temporary/test/foo.tar?name=test.tex}\par \input {tar:///e:/temporary/test/foo.tar.xz?name=test.tex}\par \input {tar:///e:/temporary/test/foo.tar.gz?name=test.tex}\par } \stoptext The tar files are handled by lmtx itself, the gzipped variant uses the basic decompressor of the engine (different in lmtx than in mkiv but that should not matterl i only tested lmtx). The xz one is a bit more special as it uses the external xz program unless one has limlzma installed, e.g. in: tex/texmf-win64/bin/lib/luametatex/lzma/liblzma.dll (mtxrun --generate makes it locatable). In all three examples performance is quite ok. It might a nice solution for cases where one has many small files cluttering the system. It actually might be more efficient to use tar.xz instead of zip files but then we also need to ship the lib and that is not on the agenda. I'm in no hurry with such alternatives (most of todays bandwidth is wasted with ads and related crap anyway). Concerning math .... we have several fonts, and the public ones don't really play the game like cambria does. So, th emore bugs become features, the more we're stuck with it. Now, once fonts are stable (including bugs) we cna think of goodie files that fix things but an other option is to tell the math machinery in what aspects as font is not really opentype. Read: when to follow a traditional code path. For the moment that is just an experiment and mostly meant for myself to explore things but it is likely to stay. When the value is zero, a normal opentype font is assumed. There might be some more options but it's a bit tricky (maybe I already introduced some issues, who knows). In addition to the above there are a few fixes for issues discussed on the mailing list. typescripts and variants

Hi In my current project I need to use different variants if the Noto Serif font (Regular, Medium, Semi Condensed Bold, Regular ExtraBold.) Is my understanding of typescripts correct that I cannot have bold and extrabold in the same typescript? And that I need a typescript for regular and one for the semicondensed variants? Denis

LMTX, BIdi, full paragraph, and spurious empty line

Hello all, Last October Denis Maier complained about a spurious empty line generated with protrusion and bidi active and a full paragraph. I have recreated the issue without involving protrusion. When a paragraph is very full and bidi is on, an extra line seems to be generated. Without bidi there is no extra line. This is quite sensitive, of course, to line width. I have probably 30 instances of it occurring in a tightly-set bibliography. I would assume that it may occur in any text, but have not noticed it in the body of my book. I have created an example document that shows it. The problem disappears if bidi is turned off (comment out the first non-comment line) but of course then the RTL text is mis-set. In this example, the spurious line appears after the Walt Kelly entry. Setup output name from within ConTeXt document

I can do it on the command line by adding --result="CustomName.pdf", but I'd need to do it according to certain variables in the content of the file itself... WG: Adjust Grid to last line textheight

Hi, I have to use grid typesetting and the grid has to be aligned to the last line of textheight. I have to replicate a layout made with Indesign where there seems to be a bit of additional spacing before the first line, whereas in ConTeXt that happens to be after the last line of the page (see attachment). Is that possible? You can see nice examples which use “whatever” in MetaFun manual. In my code, the next point is the intersection point of the edge and the folding line which bisect the angle of the former folding line [M,N]. Trying to make all links in my document blue instead of red or green

I'm trying to make all the hyperlinks in my document blue. Hi, Consider the following MWE, which uses the tizk module: \usemodule[tikz] \usetikzlibrary[fadings] \starttext \starttikzpicture \fill [path fading=west,red] (-1,-1) rectangle (1,1); \stoptikzpicture \stoptext When compiling with ConTeXt LMTX version 2021.06.18, the output PDF contains "\pdfbackendcurrentresources" in the middle of a resource dictionary. Apparently, this command does not get expanded but is written literally to the file, which makes the PDF corrupt. This command is used in the tikz module file pgfutil-context.def as: \def\pgf@sys@pdf@possible@resources{\pdfbackendcurrentresources} As mentioned in a comment in back-pdf.mkxl, the command is implemented in lua in lpdf-ini.lmt. The command is also used in mlib-pps.mkxl and is documented in ConTeXts interface. Can somebody tell why it is not expanded? Any help is appreciated. Cheers, Christoph

Font glyph replacement regression

Hi, In my documents I use the MyriadPro font of Adobe. Until recently, some glyphs were automatically replaced (in a correct way) for this font. In ConTeXt LMTX version 2021.09.18, the replacement stopped working: 1. En dash and em dash: "--" and "---" are not by default replaced any more. Using the font feature "trep" brings back the replacement in this case. See https://www.mail-archive.com/ntg-context@ntg.nl/msg98162.html 2. Apostrophe: "'" is not replaced by the proper apostrophe anymore. Unfortunately, I don't know any font feature to bring back this replacement. Any hints for this issue? Hi, I noticed something strange today. If I use computer modern unicode (the concrete font) together with Neo Euler math then sometimes function names (like \sin, \cos, \tan) disappear. Sometimes they show (in non-displayed math and in fractions(?)). Attached is a file showing the problem, together with the output and the typescript file. I use the latest ConTeXt version and I have cleared the cache, but no change. Maybe I'm overlooking something, but what? /Mikael

I've written a Java-based lexer/parser that can convert straight quotes to curly quotes for English prose. It's a one-pass algorithm (O(n)) that uses neither look-behind nor regex. The folks at PG may be interested in using it themselves to help convert quotes in older texts en masse. I am trying to typeset some documents under tex/texmf-context/doc/context/sources with mixed results. I am using ConTeXt from TeX Live 2021, and the latest LMTX (just rsync'ed). Results vary: 1. xtable as list item (again)

Dear list, I already posted a similar question some time ago (https://mailman.ntg.nl/pipermail/ntg-context/2021/101021.html) but I got no reply. Item number in 2 is placed on the bottom of the xtable. I need it on the top of the xtable. 2. There is an extra horizontal space before the xtable. How can I get rid of it? (In my real-world document, the space before is huge. In any case, it misplaces the xtable.) Maybe my approach is wrong, but I need the xtable as part of a list (and I need it to strecht it horizontally). Does anyone know how to achieve this? Natural tables | 2 tables in a page seem to interfere with each other?

Hi, I have 2 "natural tables" in one page and it appears that I have to (manually) reset the columns in the second table, for those columns that I had set specific width. See the example below - Maybe I am missing a trick or two - or this indeed is the desired behavior? Hello everyone, I am creating a project of notes across different areas of mathematics I am studying and the structure looks like this: env_notes.tex project_notes.tex geogroups/groups-prd_geometry-groups.tex geogroups/groups-c_chapter1.tex I am following this wiki: https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Project_structure My question is: Why do I need to specify \environment env_notes before It works at the component level? \startplacetable[location=none] doesn't have a "Table X" label, but \startplacetable[location=force] does

I've got three questions: 1. I've got a document with some xtables. If I use \startplacetable[location=none] the tables *don't* have a "Table X" label, but they float and end up in locations where I don't want them. If I use \startplacetable[location=force] the tables *do* have a "Table X" label (which I don't want), but the tables *do* show up where I want them, that is, they don't float. How do I get rid of the "Table X" label when I use \startplacetable[location=force]? 2. Also, when I constructed the example I used \startmode[locationforce] \startplacetable[location=force] \stopmode \startnotmode[locationforce] \startplacetable[location=none] \stopmode so I could build both outputs from the same input file. When the locationforce mode was *not* set the command finished with no errors, but when the locationforce mode *was* set the command finished with the error: tex error > tex error on line 229 in file ./table-location-label-wrong.ctx: The file ended when scanning an argument. however, when I used \doifmodeelse{locationforce}{\startplacetable[location=force]}{\startplacetable[location=none]} instead, it worked fine. 3. Even when I use the --noconsole option on my context invocation, there is a lot of information that is written to the console. It looks like the information is repeated for each run context makes over the file. Is there some way to get this information to show up in the log file, instead of on the console? ConTeXt's version information: ConTeXt ver: 2021.06.13 19:21 LMTX fmt: 2021.6.13 int: english/english. I've attached my example (table-location-label.ctx), the GNUmakefile I use to build it using --mode so that the same source produces both the version with location=force and location=none, and the two PDF output files ( table-location-label-none.pdf and table-location-label-force.pdf). Bug in Luatex file handling?

This I cannot explain. Opening a file directly from its full name in a string succeeds. But doing the same from a parameter transferred from ConteXt to Lua succeeds if the file is in one directory deeper but fails if the file is two directories deeper. I suspect there is something not ok in LuaTeX. The lines with .... and >>>> directly come from print statements inserted in the Lua code. dr. Trouble with using predefined typescript files

Hello everyone, I am reading the ConTexT manual’s chapter on Typography. I want to achieve a Palatino-like small font which is bolder than the default provided by ConTeXt like in some math textbooks. So I loaded the typescript files ie type-xxx stated in the chapter in turns no matter the type-xxx I load. Hi, A few things (1) Thomas and I picked up the facing floats thread. I will probably remove the experimental code from mkiv and only work on the lmtx implementation. The same can be true for streams. (2) The \limits and \nolimist etc commands are actually modifiers and so are \Umathadapttoright and \Umathadapttoleft. dictionary example

I am wondering if someone has tried a two-column dictionary layout with ConTeXt. What is confounding me at the moment is the gap between entries in the columns. My MWE is below. Try as I may, I seem unable to get rid of those gaps! I obviously want each entry to follow on from the other. I'm obviously not doing things right! They are extended versions of latin modern and come in: - 10pt (serif, sane, mono, math) - book (serif, sane, mono, math) - 8pt (partial) I made a typescript for the 10pt regular and book (as I see no reason to configure 8pt). So, assuming that one installs these fonts: \setupbodyfont[newcomputermodern-book] \setupbodyfont[newcomputermodern] should work ok. The book variant is quite nice. I didn't look into the provided math alternates (context supports that but I didn't define them for this font ... input from math lovers is welcome). Now, this font also implements, as cambria does, upright integrals and as that has comes on my radar every year when I ponder these integrals I decided that it was about tiem to deal with it properly. This \Umathadaptsize is a bit like the limits related suffixes (and uses the same scanner logic). It basically flags an operator as something that should grow cf what follows. I can add some fine tuning if needed (can also be dealt with at the macro end, as with other mechanisms, but this is just a first test of useability). (I might also extend another mechanism to deal with it but putting scripts on top or after is already handles pretty well by regular mechanisms, so ...) Of course only a few fonts provide these upright growing integrals (makes me wonder about summation and product). Concerning the newcm fonts: for some reason the book variants (otf files) are about twice as large (in filesize) but what we use (cached) is the same size (only bboxes differ) so there is something fishy in the otf. I can imagine that at some point we add the 10pt/book ones to the standard mkiv distribution and maybe only the subset to the lmtx distribution but for now these book ones are too big for that, but it all depende on them being used. Happy testing (hopefully there are no side effects). Incorrect sorting in \completelistofabbreviations for numbers

Hi everyone, I think I've found a sorting bug in \completelistofabbreviations in the latest LMTX (and probably also MKIV). When using this minimal example \abbreviation[OTT]{123}{One, Two, and Three} \abbreviation{ABC}{A, B, and C} \abbreviation{ZYX}{Z, Y, and X} \starttext \completelistofabbreviations[criterium=all] \stoptext I get ABC A, B, and C 123 One, Two, and Three ZYX Z, Y, and X Numbers should go before letters. Calculating Best Box Width?

I am not especially facile with ConTeXt, and it has been years since I did anything complex with TeX, so I am hoping someone could help me with this. The following is probably not great code, but it shows what I am trying to do. The problems are twofold: a benign problem is that I get underfull hbox errors (\dontcomplain notwithstanding). But the other problem is that with text of a certain size, the final line is much shorter than the others. Is there some clever way to repeatedly typeset the text (e.g., put it in an hbox, measure the width, and repeatedly try .5, .333, .25 of the hbox width until it fits in the allocated space)? PDF forms not creating proper children

Hello, I currently try to build a document with AcroForms, e.g., the examples from [1] also linked in the Wiki. The most recent example is in the form/ subdirectory and dated mid 2020. However, when building the file(s) with my ConTeXt distribution the file created is broken, in comparison to the PDF checked in into the Git. The more obvious difference is that the PDF in the repository can be filled in the Firefox 89 beta, while the other PDF doesn't even display the fields as forms. Running pdfinfo also yields: > Syntax Error: Form field child is not a dictionary I suspect that due to some breakage the forms children aren't set in the AcroForms dictionary anymore? LMTX problem with doifmode in \setuplayout

Hello all, Odd issue with LMTX (works fine with --luatex). \doifelsemode causes a failure if it is used to set a simple value such as on, off, yes, no, ..., but works with a dimension. Perhaps better illustrated by an example: \definemode [aaa] [keep] \setuplayout [ marking=\doifmodeelse{aaa}{off}{on}, % marking=on, grid=\doifmodeelse{aaa}{yes}{no}, % grid=yes, bottom=\doifmodeelse{aaa}{10mm}{20mm}, ] \starttext This is only a test. \stoptext The problem occurs whether or not the mode is enabled. In the example, it fails with the mode test in the either the marking= or grid= keys, but has no problem with it in the bottom= key. The error message says: The control sequence marked <to be read again> should not appear between \csname and \endcsname. pointing to the enabled \doifmodeelse line. The same issue occurs with the following, using \doifmode: \definemode [aaa] [keep] \setuplayout [ marking=on, marking=\doifmode{aaa}{off}, ] \starttext This is only a test. \stoptext This did work without complaint a few months ago. -- Rik Kabel

keep text strictly inside box

As can be seen in this screenshot, the text overshoots on the right side the boundary of the fairly narrow \framedtext. My intent is to not hyphenate the names, even if that means a ragged edge on the right side. But at the same time the text must absolutely stay within the confines of the framedtext. I played with \raggedright, \tolerance, \looseness, \emergencystretch but no combination of them seems sufficient fto force all gtext inside. Is there another solution to force the text inside the box or do I have to insert linebreaks manually (a nuisance to be avoided, of course.) dr. Hans van der Meer

In the following MWE for a textbackground the parameter backgroundoffset has the expected effect. But for positive values only. A backgroundoffset=-10pt has no visible effect. randomizer line-breaking

Hi Hans, is there some kind of randomizer involved in line-breaking? I have a 458 pages project, a book of humanities. When I immediately typeset (engine=luatex) it a second time, the resulting PDF differs on 14 pages, diffpdf-compared to the original PDF when I typeset it a third time, the resulting PDF differs on 7 pages, when I typeset it a forth time, the resulting PDF differs on 12 pages, when I typeset it a fifth time, the resulting PDF differs on 0 pages. "differs" means that there a paragraphs (mostly footnotes, rarely in the main text) that show different line-breaking: This doesn't mean wrong hyphenation, just *different* hyphenation, different each time. As you can imagine, I can't provide a minimal example for this, only the entire project-folder and the entire context-standalone. Steffen

Hi, I have a table with around 120 rows and 120 columns which fits an A0 paper. I want it to be split so that it fits A4 sized papers. When I tried using xtables : \startxtable[split=repeat,header=repeat] \startxtablehead ... \stopxtablehead \startxtablebody .... . . . .... \stopxtablebody the table rows get split into different pages, but the columns get cut at the right edge of the page. Is there a way to split the columns as well (repeating the first column as necessary)? Also, what is the use of grouping rows within \startxtablenext and \stopxtablenext? Note: I am just typing the outline of the code as the cell definitions is very long and hopefully my requirement is clear without the entire cell definitions. setup parameter problem

The code below seems ok in \startsection[title=] but not when I program the parameter collection with \def\setupparameters{\getparameters[prefix]} In that case even [title={enclosed value}] crashes with error message: Use of \doMacro doesn't match its definition. Obviously I am missing something here. where to break a long header

I had an unsually long header and it didn't look great: https://ellen.idiomdrottning.org/sateotc1.png A crlf fixes it: https://ellen.idiomdrottning.org/sateotc2.png But then that shows up in the table of contents so that's not a good solution. What is the best practice for this situation?
