I can no longer print the footnotes when I using columns in LTMX. If I remove the \{start|stop}columns, it works fine. Conditional formatting with *frontpart, *bodypart, *backpart modes

Hi, I was curious about the possibility of handling general formatting settings (e.g., page layout, headers and footers, page numbering, alignment, default body font assignment, etc.) conditionally for front, body, and back matter using modes. According to the wiki page at https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Modes, this should be doable with blocks like \startmode[*frontpart] ... \stopmode, but even in the following minimal example, the conditional formatting isn't getting applied: ``` \startmode[*frontpart] \setupbodyfont[modern, 12pt] \stopmode \startmode[*bodypart] \setupbodyfont[pagella, 12pt] \stopmode \startmode[*backpart] \setupbodyfont[termes, 12pt] \stopmode \starttext \startfrontmatter \input knuth\par \stopfrontmatter \startbodymatter \input knuth\par \stopbodymatter \startbackmatter \input knuth\par \stopbackmatter \stoptext ``` Is there something obvious that I'm missing? space before section titles sometimes disappears in grid mode

E.g. in CG journal, there are usually 3 blank lines before a section title. Most of it is single column and without grid, no problem there. But some articles use columnsets and are therefore in grid mode. Sometimes the space before the section title disappears completely, so that it is glued to the previous paragraph. If I include \startlinecorrection in "before" of \setuphead[section], in front of the \blank, the space is only reduced by 1 line, but I get the space also at the top of a column (or at the start of the article). If I put \startlinecorrection after \blank, the space disappears the same as without linecorrection. \setuphead[section] [before={\startlinecorrection\blank[BigCGblank]}, after={\stoplinecorrection\blank[CGblank]}, grid=both, ] It happens reproducably if there is a float before \startsection, but sometimes I can’t find a reason. In the other magazine I’m typesetting ATM, I get the same problem. No columnsets involved in that case, but still in grid mode. There I can "fix" it with some \blank[3*line], but it doesn’t help in the floats case. Hraban

Different in-text and list citation renderings

Hi, I'm currently working on implementing a new citation rendering for SBL style. One of the challenges of this style is that it specifies slightly different rules for citations in the text (which are generally expected to look like citations made with the "entry" alternative) and entries in the final list of publications. The two most common differences are (1) Authors in the in-text citation are printed in normal form (i.e., first name followed by last name), while authors in the list citation are printed in inverted for for the first author and normal form for all subsequent authors. (2) Most fields in the in-text citation are separated by commas, while the list citation uses periods in these places. Is there already a mechanism for handling this for another citation style? And if not, could anyone offer a suggestion on how I might go about implementing separate rules for in-text citations and list citations? Thanks! Joey

nil from TeX to Lua

In the TeX to Lua interface with \def\Macro#1{\directlua{luafunction("#1")}} the transfer from TeX to Lua is by string. However what to do at the Lua end when calling \Macro{}? As I understand it, then on the Lua side an empty argument and an empty string are indistinguishable. This is not always wanted, for example when one needs to place either a nil or an empty string into a Lua table. I am running in trouble when to t.key set to \Macro{} should become nil or when it should become "". Is there some common understanding about how to handle this situation? dr. Hans van der Meer

footnote interaction in titles

Hi, I probably shouldn't use footnotes within titles, but I am misusing the title elements for a quick interview style document (I use them in the ToC). One thing I have noticed is that interaction style (color and styles) are not applied in the footnote and footnote numbering. Is that a side effect or intended like that? A half-workaround is to apply the styles directly, but not sure how I can force the numbering style (same-page reference). Problem with colored font

Dear list, I'm trying to use the BabelStone Flags font, with colored flags of many countries, available freely under the SIL Open Font License 1.1 at: https://babelstone.co.uk/Fonts/Download/BabelStoneFlagsDual.ttf In the MWE below, there is a spurious “at” in the first time that the definition of the symbol for the Brazilian flag is used, but no problem when the definition for the flag of Portugal is used or even when the symbol for the Brazilian flag is used a second time. Referencing fonts by path within ConTeXt

Hi, I'm interested in packaging a ConTeXt project in a self-contained way, so that the environment/component/project .tex files, the bibliography .bib file(s), and fonts used for typesetting are all provided in one place. (The goal is that others can generate the PDFs themselves from the source files as long as they have a sufficiently recent version of ConTeXt installed.) The usual ConTeXt directory structure makes sense for most of this, but it doesn't address the possibility of accessing fonts locally. I think I could do this with a script that temporarily sets the OSFONTDIR variable to the local fonts directory and then invokes ConTeXt to typeset the project-level file, but I was wondering if there is an easier way to do this from within ConTeXt. Specifically, is there a way to specify a font via a local path with font setup commands in an environment file? Thank you! Joey

Setting a heading text on its own page with \setuphead

Hi, I'd like to define my own class of heading derived from the "part" heading; in the MWE below, it's called "MyPart". I'd like this heading to have the following features: - Its title should appear in the ToC, but its number should never be printed in the ToC or in the text. - It should always start on an odd page. - Its text should be in a larger size than the text of the body, set in all caps, and set with extra letterspacing. - Most importantly, the title of the heading should appear on its own page without a header or footer. The text of the body should begin on the next odd page. Rotating pages

For the following document, the last 3 pages are landscape, but I would like to have the pdf-ed rotated so they are in the pdf document portrait, ie rotated 90 degree to the left but leave the page as how they are now. Code document and simpleslides and create in one go the document with simpleslides added

Is there an easy way to write a Context document and also code simpleslides in the same document so that the simpleslides are automatically added to the document as for example an appendix? Ie one tex document with Context code, perhaps with some \input and something like a two-pass job. I was thinking if the simpleslides could be saved as a number of png images and then with the recurse add them to the document with placefigure. Jeroen

issue with footnote in TOC

That's great, I wikified a Note for testing if a buffer exists or has content (using the \getbuffer[…] approach for the moment). If I was asked, I'd opt for \doifelseemptybuffer (doifemptyelse?) since one could think of similar commands that test for empty "objects". Is there an option for testing blocks? (I actually use blocks quite frequently …) I just realized they are probably handled very differently during the typesetting. Basically I would just need to test if during the first run any of \beginBLOCK … \endBLOCK was invoked (but if one gets a test for some content in-between that's even better). As an alternative solution, is there a way to add content to buffers? Unfortunately, I can't use \getbuffer[first,second], but \startbuffer[first][add=yes] … \stopbuffer would be nice. Thanks! Strange new behaviour of the mailing list

Hi all, I noticed that beginning July 27th, the messages distributed by the ConTeXt mailing list appear to be from Mailing list for ConTeXt users without the actual name of the sender appearing. It may be dependent on the mail client I am using (Mail.app on MacOS 11.4), but I wonder whether something has changed on mailing list server, and whether if there is something I can do to have the old behaviour (which was convenient when one wanted to follow up mails from some specific contributors). placefigure, usetikzlibrary and readfile

Hello all. It seems that \usetikzlibrary is sometimes read, sometimes not, and I don't understand why. Rationale: I would like, using one file, to use it to produce a picture, as with LaTeX's Standalone class, but to be able to include it in a calling document as well, for better management of fonts, etc. Thus this is most convenient. I have everything in the main document and I can quickly reuse any figure elsewhere. What I did: I use \readfile in a main ConTeXt file document.tex to include the file included.tex . The file included.tex should contain *just* the TikZ picture and what is needed to compile it "standalone". The issue: It seems I can call the file with the TikZ picture description multiple times, with \readfile, from within the very same \placefigure. However, if I call it by using two successive \placefigure commands, the \usetikzlibrary[blabla] in the included file doesn't seem to be recognised. E.g. with the provided example below, the key "right angle" is not understood, as if \usetikzlibrary[angles] was not there. One workaround would be to use \usetikzlibrary[allTheLibrariesISupposeMightEverBeNeeded] in the calling file. But I don't like it. I would rather have only the TikZ libraries relevant to some picture included in the corresponding file. Additional font variants

Hi, I’m trying to set up a “handwriting” font. In the example below I’m using Comic Sans, because probably everyone has it available, IRL I’m using the commercial “Supernett Cn” that has more styles. (Also, I’m using Alegreya Serif + Sans.) If I name it "ss/sans/Sans", it works as expected, but with "hw/handwriting/Handwriting" it only uses the regular font, never other styles. "mtxrun --script fonts ..." shows that the configured files are found. Is this a limitation in ConTeXt, or what did I wrong? Hi, I have to reproduce a book layout that was done in Adobe Indesign, and I don't really manage to get the right fontsizes, i.e. according to Acrobat Pro the fonts are consistently a bit smaller then expected. That may well be an Adobe problem, it's just that I have to aim for rather specific target values... Is there any reason why the following MWE does not produce the footnote at the bottom of the page? It seems like the use of framedtext is preventing it, but am not sure why. Can I get around this problem and still have framed text? ligature exceptions

Hi all, just two quick questions: a couple of weeks ago, there was a long discussion on ligature exceptions in, e.g., German. Hans provided an elegant new mechanism (\startlanguageoptions). So my two questions: 1. Is the old mechanism (\replaceword[eg][Auflage][Au{fl}age]) now obsolete? I tried using it, but unwanted ligatures still occurred. If it is indeed deprecated, I'll add a note to the wiki (this would mean that the current texlive version does not have the new mechanism and the latest lmtx doesn't use the old one, so that's somewhat problematic). 2. Both mechanisms only work for complete words, is that right? So I can't just provide a pattern such as "uf|forder," I have to provide a full list with all inflected forms: auf|fordern auf|fordert auf|fordernd Auf|forderung Auf|forderungen and for 1-3 also the forms with a capital letter. Hello. I'm trying to get LMTX to use my fonts on Fedora 33 Linux. I've got LMTX installed in the directory /sw/versions/context/lmtx and I've put copies of the fonts I'd like to use in /sw/versions/context/lmtx/tex/texmf-fonts. Some of them are truetype and some of them are opentype. When I run mtxrun --script fonts --reload --force it says fonts | names | scanning path '/sw/versions/context/lmtx/tex/texmf-fonts' for otf files fonts | names | 0 otf files checked, okay and later fonts | names | scanning path '/sw/versions/context/lmtx/tex/texmf-fonts' for ttf files fonts | names | 0 ttf files checked, okay Any ideas of what I'm doing wrong? -- T. Adobe Acrobat accessibility criteria

Hello ConTeXt friends, I am newly exploring ConTeXt in search of a better way to produce PDF/UA-1 accessible and PDF/A compliant documents programmatically. From my early experiments, ConTeXt docs appear to fully satisfy the veraPDF validator, but Adobe Acrobat’s Accessibility Checker has three qualms with ConTeXt-produced documents: 1. The document is configured to display the file name rather than the title in the top of the window (DisplayDocTitle == True is what I think is required). See here <https://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG20-TECHS/PDF18.html>. 2. "Tagged Annotations" fails, suggesting that the document’s links are not properly tagged. I believe the issue is missing "Link - OBJR” (object reference) tags. See here <https://amp.levelaccess.net/public/standards/view_best_practice.php?violati…>, here <https://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG20-TECHS/PDF11.html>, and here <http://verapdf.org>. 3. "Tab Order" fails, I believe because ConTeXt does not specify that the tab order should follow the Document Structure, so Acrobat reads it as unspecified. See here <https://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG20-TECHS/PDF3.html>. Is there something I could be doing to correct these issues in my ConTeXt documents? Or is this a change that would have to be made within ConTeXt itself? I know that Adobe is not the definitive arbiter of what an “accessible” PDF looks like, but for many organizations, passing the Acrobat accessibility checker is a prerequisite, so it seems worthwhile to me to make ConTeXt capable of it. Hi, I uploaded a new version that mostly concerns documentation files (checking them for lmtx and so). I (partly) updated the primitives manual (for hans vd meer) and added followingup-expressions (for pablo). The expressions stuff (was already in previous uploads) is a side effect of finalizing some luametatex code. Part of it had been there in commented form as I had not yet made up my mind about how much is needed. In the end I decided to *not* integrate it in the \numexpr an d\dimexpr primitives because of potential compatibility issues (although that is unlikely given the way we use them in the core, I don't know to what extend users use these primitives). The long ago - one of the first things in luametatex - introtroduced integer division : probably went unnoticed (of course not by ws) which is an indication that this extension has been is rather safe. Anyway, more about expressions can be found in the mentioned documents. Multimedia, PDF and ConTeXt

Dear ConTeXt community, recently, as part of my bachelor thesis, I looked into the state of multimedia (audio, video, 3D) and other relatively obscure PDF features, with the connection to TeX. I already put off this write up long enough. Hopefully it clarifies things that might influence the current uncertainty about these features and their presence in ConTeXt (see abstract of Hans' talk for upcoming ConTeXt meeting, chapter 8 of "On and on" and remarks in files like "lpdf-wid.lmt"). The following text discusses the options for including multimedia in PDF files from ConTeXt. First the different PDF mechanisms are introduced and compared, then their support in ConTeXt is summarized. My ideas for future steps are also included. Patch to fix some bugs is also below. Lastly I link to some resources regarding the topic. The various versions of the PDF standard have over the years developed several ways of including "multimedia" in PDF files. The simplest are XObjects which allow raster and vector graphics -- this is a well known and well supported feature in both PDF writers and viewers. However, later revisions of the PDF standard added what is essentially five different mechanisms for including video, audio or 3D files (each mechanism supports a different subset of these three). For evaluating these mechanisms from perspective of ConTeXt it is possible to devise the following criteria: - support in PDF standard (deprecation, etc.), - supported media types (audio, video[+optional audio], 3D), - support of different source types (embedded file, external file, URL) - what is possible to achieve ("usefulness") and at what cost ("complexity"), - current support in ConTeXt, - and the most important: support in PDF viewers. Perhaps the "source types" need a bit of explanation. Essentially all file references from PDF can be one of three types: - Embedded file. The referenced file is *in* the PDF file, this means that it can also be compressed as part of it (not very useful for multimedia though). This is nice because the result is integral -- the media file can't get lost and there is only a single file to distribute. - URL file. The reference to the file is solely the URL. Takes almost no space at all in the PDF file, but means that the availability of the media file and PDF file are not tied. - External file. A file path is included in the PDF file. The file doesn't have to be available over the internet, but has to be distributed along with the PDF file (and the relative path has to match). The "usefulness" aspect includes the possibility of interaction or scripting. E.g. using media player buttons ("controls"), scripting with JavaScript or some control with PDF actions (\goto, and triggers like page open which allow auto-play). The viewers I tested were: Acrobat Reader DC, Foxit Reader, Sumatra PDF on Windows and Evince, Okular, Xpdf, MuPDF, Firefox and Google Chrome on Linux. Now to the different mechanisms: 1) Sound objects - First appeared in PDF 1.2 (1996), but had since been deprecated (PDF 1.5, 2003) and became unsupported (PDF 2.0, 2017). - Only audio is supported. - "Raw" and in practice uncompressed PCM audio can be embedded (i.e. ".wav" format without the metadata). Otherwise an external file may be used (this one has to be in a real audio format - like ".wav" - i.e. with metadata). - Users usually don't have raw audio. So embedding requires preprocessing. Some control using PDF actions is possible. - Not supported in ConTeXt. - None of the viewers supports the external files. Only Acrobat Reader supports the embedded raw audio. 2) Movie objects - First appeared in PDF 1.2 (1996), but had since been deprecated (PDF 1.5, 2003) and became unsupported (PDF 2.0, 2017). - Both video and audio is supported. - Any source (embedded, external and URL file). - In all regards superior to sound objects. Is still relatively simple and allows some customization and control (media player controls, PDF actions). - This is the backing mechanism for including video and audio in ConTeXt (\externalfigure, \useexternalsoundtrack). - Supported only in Evince and Okular (with their usual quirks, see below). Notably Acrobat Reader does no longer support this mechanism. 3) Multimedia ("Renditions") - First appeared in PDF 1.5 (2003). Adobe Acrobat considers them "legacy". - Both video and audio supported (as well as other unspecified types of multimedia, like images and Flash, but not really, see below). - In theory all source types should be possible. - This mechanism was supposed to replace sound and movie objects. Hence their deprecation. The mechanism is complex (the spec is 10 times longer than that for movie objects). It expects the PDF viewers to work with plugins and introduces ways for determining if a media file is really playable in some plugin. It is allowed to even include more media files (to serve as fallback should the primary one be unsupported by the viewer). Other complexity is that the concept of the rectangle where the media will be played ("screen") is separated from the media itself ("rendition"). In theory this allows mixing and matching them, but in practice is a lot of unnecessary complexity, at least in my opinion. This mechanism allows multimedia player controls, as well as PDF actions. The PDF action can be either one of the predefined ones or entirely specified in JavaScript (extra API is available for this). - This is the mechanism behind \useexternalrendering. This has been used for Flash (.swf files) and "manual" audio + video insertion as far as I can tell. - Evince and Okular support this (with usual quirks), but not for external files (Evince segfaults). Acrobat and Foxit support this mechanism as well, but Acrobat only allows embedded files. Okular by mistake auto-plays all media [1]. 4) 3D art - First appeared in PDF 1.6 (2004). - Only 3D files supported. This means U3D and later PRC files. The 3D objects described in the files are shown in a scene whose parameters (like camera position, angle, background color, etc.) can be configured. - The source is not a file, but a "PDF stream" (which is essentially embedded file with different metadata, but allows also "external files" to contain the stream data). - The 3D functionality is nice. It allows great amount of interactivity (playing with the camera, selectively disabling 3D objects, etc.) and also scriptability (switching between predefined "views" with PDF actions and a _lot_ of possibilities with JavaScript scripts). - This is the mechanism used for u3d and prc files in the ConTeXt "figure" mechanism (\externalfigure). - Apart from the external streams (see above) everything works in Adobe Acrobat. Foxit Reader also has support, but it is limited (no support for JavaScript and printing). 5) Rich Media - First appeared in Adobe extension level 3 to PDF 1.7 (2008). Later included in PDF 2.0 (2017). It was meant to replace both multimedia (renditions) and 3D art mechanisms, with unified mechanism based on Flash, thus also supporting arbitrary Flash applications. - Supports video, audio and 3D. - Only embedded files are supported. - While the mechanism is heavily based on Flash (which is dead, since December 2020) it allows also "plain" Rich Media without Flash. The old idea was that the PDF viewer would support Flash (and playing its video as well as mp4), but the audio/video wouldn't be played directly by the PDF viewer, but by a Flash application (embedded in the PDF along with the media file). This means that the mechanism has inherent complexity that is not justified nowadays (essentially four levels of indirection for a plain audio / video file). While the same thing should have been true for 3D files I couldn't find any real usage like that. Instead it seems that 3D files with Rich Media have always been used like with the "3D art" mechanism (but with different wrappers). There is essentially no scriptability for audio and video. (Note that in this regard 3D files work just like with the "3D art" mechanism). There also isn't an easy way to display multimedia player controls (a hack works for Acrobat). One thing that it allows is playing the media in a customizable window, even full screen (not only in a part of a page like the previous mechanisms allow). - ConTeXt uses this mechanism for Flash (SWF) files in the figure mechanism. This is also allows audio/video (Flash media player, like "vplayer" is inserted and the media file is its parameter), see for example "java-imp-vplayer.mkiv". - Both Flash and "plain" Rich media are supported by Acrobat Reader. Okular only supports Flash Rich Media. How is this possible, considering that Flash player is dead? Well, both viewers have a compatibility layer that detects embedded Flash media player file and doesn't use it to play the video, but instead plays the video natively. This is good, because there are a lot of documents out there which use Flash based Rich Media. But there is absolutely no need to create new documents with embedded Flash player applications, it only takes space and isn't even used. Okular notably doesn't support plain Rich Media. The support is easy to add, but my proposed patch [2] depends on changes to poppler. The poppler developers want to take this chance to improve the Rich Media representation [3] but I haven't gotten to that, yet. Support similar to Okular's should be relatively easy to add to Evince as well. The 3D support is the same as with 3D art for Acrobat Reader. Weirdly Foxit Reader doesn't support 3D files wrapped in Rich Media, although there doesn't seem any good reason for it. All in all, of the five mechanisms 2 are deprecated and unfortunately no longer supported in the most used PDF viewer and other 2 mechanisms are needlessly complex and in reality limited. For example, while the multimedia mechanism supports JavaScript, (AFAIK) only Acrobat Reader supports that, this further limits the viewer support or available features, choose one. The support for video and audio in Okular and Evince is based on Gstreamer. Explaining Gstreamer is tricky, but essentially it allows the viewers to play any media type as long as the right plugin is installed. These plugins are distributed in bundless and three of them cover all reasonable formats and more. But while the media file format support is great, these viewers don't really support PDF actions or JavaScript for more control over the media playback. Acrobat and Foxit both use Windows Media Player for playing the video. Both support controls, but behave differently -- Acrobat displays the controls outside of the multimedia annotation, Foxit within... As if it wasn't enough there is other trouble with playing multimedia in Acrobat Reader and Foxit Reader. They nag you to allow the media playback every time. You can select to trust the file once or from now on, but if somebody opens a foreign PDF with video, they aren't going to get smooth experience. Another thing (but I don't remember well) is that there is a check box in Acrobat Reader, that allows the "legacy" Multimedia mechanism. I don't remember its state in an unaltered installation. After evaluating these mechanisms I came to conclusion, that a PDF writer today is best at: - Embedding video and audio using the "multimedia" ("renditions") mechanism. It is supported in proprietary and open source viewers alike. Customization and scripting / PDF actions is out of the question, though. - Embedding 3D files using the "Rich Media" mechanism. While it is essentially just a few differences in wrappers, it has real advantages (data sources are files not streams, and multiple JavaScript script files are supported), that I find nice enough for the implementation and users alike. Some sources for this topic are also the LaTeX centric [4] and [5]. I go into more details in the former. In the latter the "plain" Rich Media and "multimedia" ("renditions") mechanisms are suggested as solutions for the Flash media player approach. And now for the future. What should ConTeXt do? On one hand all available mechanisms are flawed in one way or the other. On the other hand some users may still find the functionality useful. My suggestions is to either delete all the support for audio/video or: 1) Delete the "Movie objects" implementation of figures. It is not supported in viewers, where users expect it to [6]. 2) Delete all mentions of Flash. There is no reason to create new documents with embedded Flash files, even though they may work in some viewers. Plain Rich Media can be used instead, with hopefully soon equal support [2]. 3) The "externalrendering" mechanism (multimedia/renditions) can stay. If the insertion of audio/video as "figures" is to stay, then I suggest to use multimedia/renditions for it (in simplified form). Note that the 3D support in ConTeXt is completely fine and works in Acrobat and Foxit. The "externalrendering" part currently has three "bugs". Previous discussion at this list provides some context [7]. The following is currently "wrong": - Currently ConTeXt wraps a PDF file specification for embedded file inside another file specification (i.e. embedded files don't work). - As a result of "externalrendering" inheriting from \framed, the PDF annotation late_lua whatsit is centered inside the frame and so the annotation itself is offset by half its width to the right. - ConTeXt doesn't explicitly allow the viewer to create temporary files, hence the playback fails in Acrobat Reader. Hopefully the patch included below fixes all three. But note that while I love ConTeXt I don't know it well and may be terribly wrong. I also was aiming at a minimal diff for inclusion in this e-mail. Any "video.mp4" in the directory you compile in will do. (Works as expected in Okular on Linux.) This was a dump of knowledge that I gained from writing my thesis. Sadly its in Czech, but part of it is PDF code snippets and tables summarizing viewer support, that I can translate and provide if there is interest. But a large part of what I deem practical today is implemented and documented here: http://mirrors.ctan.org/macros/luatex/optex/pdfextra/pdfextra-doc.pdf. The source is probably hard to read, because of the "_" and "." prefixes in the control sequences, but those can be ignored. I posted some "real" documents in [3] and [5]. If more documents / snippets / explanations are needed I hope I can provide them. Sadly, while working on this, I didn't have access to the PDF 2.0 standard. My information mostly comes from the PDF 1.7 standard and publicly known information about PDF 2.0 - the Rich Media mechanism got included in PDF 2.0, but I am not sure in what extent did the Flash part get included. I also don't know if there really is anything new, but nothing suggests it. Regardless, viewer support isn't complete for something standardized over 20 years ago, I don't expect revolution in the PDF viewers, considering the price of the standard(s). Hi, I have a document that doesn’t work with LMTX right now. While testing LMTX I would like to exclude certain passages and work on them later. When I run the following: \doifmode{*mkiv}{mkiv} \doifmode{*contextlmtxmode}{contextlmtx} \doifmode{*lmtx}{lmtx} I always get „mkiv“. I’ve tried - pre LMTX context - LMTX --luatex - LMTX (2021.07.23) What is the recommended way to detect LMTX? Greetings Axel

Hi, since the lettrine module does not work with LMTX, I’ve looked into \setupinitial. (There is a different thread about this.) There is a „style“ parameter to change the style, but whenever I change the style, the font size is reset. This is not what I expected. Hi, This time the update has, appart from already mentioned mp fixes and additions, another new feature. % runpath=texruns:whatever % runpath=e:/temporary/texruns/runtest % runpath=temp:texruns/runtest % runpath=home:texruns/runtest \starttext test \stoptext In context the first line can be used to control some aspects of the run and runpath (also as command line switch) will process the document elsewhere. The main reason for this feature is that when you have files in for instance a git repository (or export), you don't want the run path to be polluted by temporary files because everything can end up in the repository when it gets updates (after all these years I don't expect this pollution issue to be solved; svn is more explicit in what goes in). So, for instance the manuals are on clean paths (on my machine i (am) put(ting) experiments, todo's etc under an ignored /private subpath which means that styles can still be found if needed). The texruns: prefix resolves to an environment variable with the same name or when not set, to the temp directory. The temp: and home: prefixes resolve (as usual) to their counterparts (prefixes are a very old mkii mechanism but still useful). When not present a path will be created, when no chdir is possible the run aborts. There are probably some cases when resources are not found but that will be dealt with in due time. I might also update the underlying mechanisms at some point. I already adapted some manuals so that means that when users process these themselves they will not see the runfiles fly to the temp path unless 'texruns' is configured. So be it. Every odd row with a background color with extreme tables?

I am adding a screen shot of part of the Optima Nova result as most will not have that font available: - All show no protrusion in the footnotes - All show a problem with the first line after the initial - When using Optima Nova, hyphenation isn’t used while the situation in Optima looks nearly identical. TrueType font styles suddenly not found anymore

But I’ve lost the old Optima font somehow. If I now try —mode=OPTIMA I get: selectfont > the requested font 'Optima' has no files for the 'tf' alternative, Latin Modern is used instead. and the document is set in Latin Modern Sans Serif. Another OpenType Postscript font like Chaparral Pro works. Another TrueType like Century Gothic does not. I seem not to be able to load any TrueType font anymore. I recall there being some way to rebuild a font cache of LMTX ConTeXt but I can’t find the instructions. Can someone enlighten me? Dear list, I'm using ConTeXt version 2021.07.22 19:16 and the following code typesets both columns in math mode \starttext \startformula \delta_{ij} = \startcases \NC 1 \NC if i = j \NR \NC 0 \NC otherwise \NR \stopcases \stopformula \stoptext The wiki states that the second column should be typeset in text mode. MP boxes: boxjoin not recognized?

Hi--- All of my figures that use MP boxes are now failing. It looks like "boxjoin" (from the MP "boxes" macros) is not being recognized. Also, apparently unrelated, I wonder if the comparison in "boxes.mp" is correct as it appears that lmtx loads "mp-xbox.mpiv" instead of "mp-xbox.mpxl". Here is some log output and a (mostly) MWE. Hey--- There seems to be a change with color transfer from ConTeXt to MetaPost. Using string references to defined (spot?) colors seemed to work but now does not; all of my colorful figures are now rendered only in shades of gray when using defined (spot?) colors…. The figure drawn by the MWE should have a dark orange border and a transparent (thin) orange fill. However, all colors of this sort seem to end up being a single shade of gray (e.g. black), rendering a box perfect for Halloween use but not for my current purposes. Is there a change to how colors defined in ConTeXt are referenced in MetaPost that I've missed or is there an issue with transferring color (name or parameter) information to MetaPost? Defined (spot?) colors work fine in ConTeXt but not in MetaPost. How to place text before a table inside a column environment

I have created a table and placed it inside a columns environment; which works as advertised. However, if I place any text before the column environment, the columns break. More clearly stated, only one column appears on the first table page; whereas two columns resume on subsequent pages. I have attached a mwe where you can use --mode=title to invoke the broken columns. Any advice on how to place text above the columns environment would be gratefully received. Getting the local float reference within a float and reuse (?) it later (\somelocalfloat?)

Hi, Is there a more convenient way to get the current reference label (stably) from within a float? For example, I would like to make an "image credits" section at the end of a document, so I do something similar to: \defineblock[credits] \starttext \section[sec:topic]{Topic} \startplacefigure [ title={Awesome figure. However, each time I add another figure, I have to replace the references appropriately. Layers – when do they repeat?

Hi, I’m struggling with layers again. According to https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Layers and my previous experience, what you typeset on layers appears only once, while you don’t set repeat=yes. But in my example (derived from a magazine layout where I use this margin layer for subtitles) the margin text is repeated on every page. Same behavior in current LMTX and MkIV. What did I wrong? Or is it a bug? (The same setup didn’t cause repeats in 2019.) Revisiting this one---as noted in the thread \, used to work in text mode; according to the logs it was deprecated and now produces an error preventing most of my documents from compiling. Is there solution that restores \, (and friends) for abbreviated spacing in text mode that doesn't require bulk changes to all of my documents (and making the source documents hard to type/read)? I appreciate using the more verbose \thinspace in macros but the abbreviations have real value in bulk text, especially when heavily used. I have many uses throughout my documents where I need a thin space (such as working with SI units) where it would be very awkward to use \thinspace everywhere in the source text. for example, consider a simple example that used to work but no longer does with the alternatives that I'm aware of: 32\,MiB--64\,MiB 32$\,$MiB--64$\,$MiB 32\thinspace MiB--64\thinspace MiB The difference in both writeability and readability for these cases is significant, especially when there are many uses close together in either text or table. Here is something I think that should be added to the documentation. In the ConTeXt garden (page Command/mainlanguage) the description is: mainlanguage Set the language of auto-generated language elements, like the title of the table of contents or the appendix. On the Command/language page: Change the hyphenation rules, quotation marks, all that sort of thing, to that of a different language. (The default language is English.) Testing showed that \mainlanguage sets both \currentlanguage and \currentmainlanguage to the same value, while \language sets \currentlanguage only. My suggestion is to add info to this behaviour to the mainlanguage page, reflecting the fact that \mainlanguage does set both \currentlanguage and \currentmainlanguage.Which is not apparent from the current documentation. Another solution would be to separate \language and \mainlanguage completely. An option I would prefer for clarity, because now the order of calling \language and \mainlanguage makes a difference. dr. Hans van der Meer

From Wikipedia: In English-language <safari-reader://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_language> outside North America (mostly in Anglophone Europe and some countries in Australasia), full dates are written as 7 December 1941 (or 7th December 1941) and spoken as "the seventh of December, nineteen forty-one" (exceedingly common usage of "the" and "of"), with the occasional [my emphasis] usage of December 7, 1941 ("December the seventh, nineteen forty-one"). In common with most continental European usage, however, all-numeric dates are invariably ordered dd/mm/yyyy. From this I infer that \language[en] or \language[en-gb] should format dates normally in day-month-year order, reserving mont-day-year for \language[us] i.e. language[en-us]. But in ConTeXt both \language[en] and \language[en-gb] produce the us ordering for \currentdate. I would be pleased if ConTeXt could be changed to the above mentioned normal behaviour for english. Moving the old book-structure to a recent ConTeXt

Years ago I wrote a book (Chess and the Art of Enterprise Architecture) using ConTeXt. The setup was (I think Taco’s) basic book project setup, with a chapters, environments, products, etc. subdirectory where you work in the chapters directory and can both produce individual chapters and the whole book. The main tool to produce was texexec. ConTeXt has moved on considerably since then (2014-2015). So, I tried teh old project to see if it still works, but found out it didn’t. There still is a texexec in my MacTeX, but the compilation fails: texexec --pdf --mode=SCREEN ../products/prd_book.tex resolvers | initialization | fatal error: kpse library is accessed (key: original) Is there a new ‘book’ project structure/template for the modern/standalone ConTeXt? Note, I have both a standalone ConTeXt (for another project) and the MacTeX distribution on my system. Without access to source code I can't try anything, but the general ideas should apply: I used Zig for cross compiling. While Zig is a full fledged programming language in its own right, it also has the ability to compile C/C++ (with built-in Clang). The more interesting part is that it also bundles different C libraries for the different targets it supports for cross compilation. This is a great match for Lua(Meta)TeX, because standard C library is the only "external" dependency. Depending on the chosen target (CPU+OS+ABI triple), the binary can then be fully statically linked or dynamically linked against the target's system C library. Zig exposes the "C compiler" functionality with two interfaces: the Zig build system and the "zig cc" command. In theory "zig cc" should be a drop-in replacement for "clang" or "gcc" [1] and therefore should be usable with existing build systems used by LuaTeX/LuaMetaTeX. In practice it is not that easy, because some "compiler feature detections" of these build systems often try to run compiled results (and fail). But in the best case (like with Lua) cross compilation may be as easy as: # "bsd" is almost like "linux", but doesn't link "readline" make CC="zig cc -target aarch64-linux-musl" bsd The result is a fully statically linked executable, that can be used on all Linux distributions. But because it is statically linked, dynamic loading of external Lua libraries written in C is not possible. The following will result in a binary that is dynamically linked against (the target system) glibc and should be able to load even Lua libraries written in C: make CC="zig cc -target aarch64-linux-gnu.2.28" bsd (Note that Zig support all relevant glibc versions, that means that compiling for older Linux distributions can be done from any OS, not just ancient Debian or CentOS. Here "2.28" is old enough to support jdh's Raspberry Pi OS -- and anything newer.) Applying this to LuaMetaTeX may or may not be hard. Frankly I don't know much about CMake. But I have experience converting LuaTeX (or rather its subset) to another build systems: 1) https://github.com/vlasakm/mmtex/blob/ltex/build.zig This was used to produce the two binaries I sent previously. The Zig cross compilation is sadly limited (https://ziglang.org/download/0.8.0/release-notes.html#Tier-1-Support) but not because more exotic systems will never be supported, it's just that nobody did the required work, yet. The support for Linux (various architectures), macOS (aarch64+x86_64) + Windows (x86_64) should be very good. I don't think there is other cross compiler that is able to target the M1 Macs. The Zig build you download from their website [2] is kind of huge, but note that it includes LLVM+Clang+Zig in one single dependency free binary + (efficiently packed) C libraries for many targets. I.e. this is all you need for all your C/C++/Zig. Provided that you (as of now) don't need anything other than Linux/Mac/Windows. Extract bib entries used in a document

I was wondering if there is a way to get the internal bibliography manager to write out a .bib (or XML or Lua table) containing only the entries used in a document? Somewhat similar to BibTeX (https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/41821/creating-bib-file-containing-…) I guess it must be internally created, but I don't see, at least from the manual, a command like \exportbtxdataset[default][way=bytext][used_references.bib]. Two use cases: (1) Sharing a clean bib file with someone. (2) Merging bib files from different sources based on the document. (Or even by chapter.) Thanks for your reply. Benjamin

Problem with chapter numbering

I've downloaded and ran the install...sh script from the directory: /opt/context-lmtx It indicates that it completed successully, but there is no 'tex' directory anywhere in the resulting /opt/context-lmtx directory tree. Please advise on how to get context-ltmx up and running. Thank you.

Proper ligatures in Malayalam

Hi, I tried to make a document in Malayalam, an Indian language. However, the ligatures don't form as expected. It bpils down to the fact that one can put stuff on different 'layers' and optionally flush these (by default all are flushed but the stackling order is honored). Although I could emulate it in mkiv, it is currently an LMTX only feature. The (optional) list accepts the usual {1,2,5,7-9} kind of specification. Dear list, I have the following source: \definefontfamily [malayalam] [rm] [RIT Rachana] %~ [features=malayalam-two] \setupbodyfont [malayalam] \starttext \startTEXpage \tf അദ്ധ്യായം\\ \em അദ്ധ്യായം\\ \em\bf അദ്ധ്യായം\\ \em അദ്ധ്യായം \stopTEXpage \stoptext Using latest from 2021.07.06 18:49 and the following fonts: http://rachana.org.in/downloads/RIT-Rachana-Regular.ttf http://rachana.org.in/downloads/RIT-Rachana-Italic.ttf http://rachana.org.in/downloads/RIT-Rachana-Bold.ttf http://rachana.org.in/downloads/RIT-Rachana-BoldItalic.ttf I get a crash when using LMTX, but not with MkIV (in both Windows and Linux). Missing symb-imp-was.mkiv ?

Hello, I am trying to follow the steps described here for using \usesymbols <https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Command/usesymbols>[was] and details described here - https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Symbols/was Looks like the file `symb-imp-was.mkiv` is missing from the path - \tex\texmf-context\tex\context\base\mkiv Thank you for any tips or pointers. best regards, Ramkumar

Ampersand in \unprotect fails in LMTX

Hi! the following example compiles with MkIV but fails in LMTX: \unprotect \setupinteraction [\c!author={Foo & Bar}] %% {Foo \& Bar} works for MkIV and LMTX \protect \starttext\null\stoptext LMTX: 1 \unprotect 2 \setupinteraction 3 [\c!author={Foo & Bar}] 4 >> \protect 5 6 \starttext\null\stoptext 7 I can't figure out why you would want to use a tab mark here. If some right brace up above has ended a previous alignment prematurely, you're probably due for more error messages. mtx-context | fatal error: return code: 256 As \& works for MkIV as well as LMTX, there's an easy workaround. Initial caps with short paragraph

This has come up before on the mailing list, but I was wondering if LMTX has a more elegant solution than using a transparent/invisible capture of the drop-cap. Consider: \setupinitial[n=2, style=\tfd, location=text]\setuphead[chapter][after={\placeinitial}] \starttext \chapter Hello world! \input ward\stoptext The output shows that the second paragraph is not indented beyond the bounding box of the drop-cap, resulting in an overlap. This isn't a problem when the first paragraph spans two or more lines. Any ideas for how to resolve this without changing the content? Thank you!
