contents pagebreak before new part

Hello all, Our conference proceedings are divided into several sessions (\parts) with several articles (\chapters) in each part. I'm trying to force a page-break at a certain point in a table of contents, just before a new part. However, if I put \completecontent[pageboundaries={3}] in the file, the TOC doesn't page break before part 3 but before every 3rd chapter of each part. Any ideas how to correct this behavior? Extraneous spaces in XML documents

I'm typesetting some XML text with comments in and for the working version the comments are to go in the margin. For the final version the comments are simply to be ignored. In the end result there is a noticeably larger space between the words where the comma had been. Apparently more than one space is reaching TeX's stomach, though it's beyond me to work out how. problem with tables

Hi Hans, I've found the following problem after I instaled last beta. With my previous version (9,10/2002?) it worked fine. interlinespacing

Dear Board, It's going to take some work to come up with a test file for this problem (since the font is not publically available), but let me describe it anyway: Arabic visually requires larger font sizes than roman, as well as wider interline spacing, so Arabic insertions in Latin can create lines of mixed interline spacing. Very strangely, this problem is more apparent in itemize environments and the like than in regular text. Question: is there a way to turn off interline spacing completely for my insertions when necessary. disappearing headers

I want the figures to be placed exactly at the place where it is in the source, even if it should cause an empty space on the page and a page break. Using the free PS Fonts with ConTeXt

Hi Contexters, ``Welcome to typeface hell'', describes my feelings correctly. I'm trying to use the free postscript fonts that come with teTeX (urw palatino, times, helvetica, courier and various others, you know the list) in ec encoding. I thinks I followed the instructions correctly, but still no luck. I'm using teTeX 2.0 with the TeXLive binaries (the ``Gerben Wierda'' distribution) on Mac OS X 10.2.3 (Jaguar). The frustrating bit is that in LaTeX everything comes preconfigured, but for ConTeXt I have to do it myself. I also use this as a testcase before buying the lucida typefaces (I want to be very sure I can install my fonts before shelling out the money). Here's a summary of what I've tried and noticed: 1 - I've used texfont on the type-ftm.dat file in the default installation of the distribution. This fails, because the ec.enc file isn't found. This seems correct, as it is named EC.enc (note that this is on hfs, a case insensitive system). I renamed the file to ec.enc and tried again. 2 - This time the encoding vector is found, and some files are generated. However I get a nice bunch of rectangles, I assume mean that some glyphs are missing. In fact I think the only glyphs that showed up are `borrowed' from Computer Modern. Help! My direct questions: a - Did anyone succeed in using the free postscript fonts on Mac OS X, using a distribution that I use (i.e. the most recent version) b - What were the exact commands that you used? Can you send me a simple test file? c - Did you experience the same EC.enc vs ec.enc naming problem? d - Do other platforms have the same problems with teTeX 2.0 (Hans: What version of teTeX are you using on your linux system, since at your place it obviously works ;-) Thanks in advance for any help, Maarten Sneep >>>-------------------------------------------------- 2 + 2 = 5 (George Orwell, 1984)

MetaTricks?

Hello, I was wondering if anybody (say, for example, Hans ;>) has ever thought about developing a (Con)TeX(t)+Meta(Post|Fun) counterpart of PSTricks? PSTricks is widely used, but has the disadvantage of not being usable for direct PDF creation; a purely "texmf"ish way to handle the stuff would be rather nice. -- Giuseppe "Oblomov" Bilotta

Announce: Auctex and ConTeXt

Hello ConTeXt hackers and emacs users, the current cvs version of auctex is now ConTeXt aware. There is no support for *any* fancy feature yet, but at least you are able to distinguish the LaTeX and the ConTeXt commands/modes. It is aimed at people that already use auctex and think that it is annoying to have LaTeX commands in your ConTeXt buffer. I am currently adding some new features. They will make it into the cvs in the next few days and weeks. If you want real ConTeXt support for emacs, you might want to use Berend's context.el. aligment of captions

Hello again! I defined my captions as follows: \setupcaptions [number=no, align=right, before={\blank[3pt]}, after={\blank[small]}, style={\ss\tfx}] If the caption is only one line, everything's ok. But from two lines up, it's always centered! Why? (I fixed it temporarily with an \raggedright in these captions, but that's no contexty way...) Hypenation problem again

Hi all, it's just my problem again with hyphenation and encoding and hungarumlauts. I have installed Adobe Sabon with both texnansi and ec encoding by the way described by Bill McClain. The texnansi installation has all the hungarumlaut characters (ohungarumlaut, Ohungarumlaut, uhungarumlaut, Uhungarumlaut) as composite chars, in the ec installation are these characters missing. I tried to get the correct hungarian hyphenation of the word 'kilométeróraőrzőkészülék' (kilom\'eter\'ora\H orz\H ok\'esz\"ul\'ek), and I became the following results with \showhyphenations (I'm using the il2 regime, the hyphenation pattern has ec encoding): Adobe Sabon ----------- language : hu(code:3) font : texnansi-sar encoding : texnansi mapping : texnansi sample : ki-lo-mé-te-ró-raőrzőkészülék = no hyphenation after ohungarumlaut Computer Modern --------------- language : hu(code:10) font : cmr10 encoding : default mapping : default sample : kilométeróraőrzőkészülék = no hyphenation Computer Modern with il2 encoding --------------------------------- language : hu(code:10) font : csr10 encoding : il2 mapping : il2 sample : kilo-mé-terórarz-kés-z-ülék = wrong hyphenations Computer Modern with ec encoding -------------------------------- language : hu(code:2) font : aer10 encoding : ec mapping : ec sample : ki-lo-mé-te-ró-raőrző-ké-szü-lék = no hyphenation at the ohungarumlauts neighborhood It seems there is none correct result. \setupitemize does no longer work?

Screen background in two columns

Good afternoon. I'm typesetting a document in two columns. I'd like to typeset examples in it just in the rest of the text but with a screen background. I tried this: \setupcolors[state=start] \setupscreens[screen=0.8] \setupbackground [background=screen, leftoffset=1em, rightoffset=1em, topoffset=1em, bottomoffset=1em] \setupframedtexts [frame=off, background=screen, width=fit] But both \startbackground and \startframedtext does not allow column/page break. I want the background to start e.g. on the bottom of the left column and to go to the top of the right one. How can I get what I want? (Well, maybe a hard task in the TeX. Some time ago I would suppose it to be unpossible---but then I've seen such a wizardry in the ConTeXt that made me to think that everything is possible---at least for Mr. Hagen.) :-) Many greetings to all of you. Hi all, thanks for responses to \expanded{\bTD[align={...}]}. After reading this I remembered I have this issue solved -- BUT -- this did not work for me if I use ContML -- <table>, <td>, etc. from it. Now I have not tested this yet, so it probably already works (e.g. <table><tr><td align="left, lohi"></td></tr></table>). I'll try it. Second -- is it possible to define, when using \clip, some overlay? If I use \clip[nx=2,x=1]{\externalfigure[gif]} \page[yes] \clip[nx=2,x=2]{\externalfigure[gif]} I get two precisely clipped figures, but I would get/define something like \clip[nx=2,x=1,width=55% (or absolute value)]{\externalfigure[gif]} \page[yes] \clip[nx=2,x=2]{\externalfigure[gif]} to get the first image slightly overlayed over the second image. If I define width absolutely (e.g. 100mm), the clipped pieces ignore x=... parameter. Maybe, I should achieve overlay if I can define range of clipped areas like \clip[nx=20,x=1-11]{\externalfigure[gif]} \page[yes] \clip[nx=20,x=9-20]{\externalfigure[gif]} There both clipped figures overlay the second one. Is this possible anyhow? Index sorting in Czech

Good morning. I have to typeset a document in Czech with index. How can I make the ConTeXt to sort it according to a Czech custom/norm? I tried to learn it from the ConTeXt source but I failed. Is there any help/documentation for it? To show what I need, see this please: 1) accutes: A and Aaccute goes in one section, but Aacute is after A (the same holds for E/Eacute, I/..., O/..., Y/...; U is special, since there is U, Uaccute and Uring). 2) carons: Ccaron, Dcaron etc. have thier own section. So there is one section for C, one for Ccaron, then is there D, then Dcaron etc. 3) Ecaron is no problem, since no Czech word can begin with it. But it goes in one section with E and Eaccute in a following order: E, Eaccute and Ecaron. 4) CH is in Czech supposed to be one letter. It stands after H. (There are some words where CH is two letters, but it can be ignored.) 5) There are much more rules, but they can be hardly algorithmized since they depend on a meaning. I can ignore them. Goodmorning, Almost ready to send invoices to the world, the day we are all longing for ;) Somehow I can't get the \getvariable right within the table. On top of the file I've got: -snip \setvariables [getallen] [uurtarief=300, buy-out=399, agency=20] -snip Then I want to use these figures, which are fictional by the way, in the table, so I tried to incorporate them in the table with the \getvariable command. m-graph and the definition of \@@expanded

Hi ConTeXters... I was wondering if the metapost/fun module "m-graph" was still working for everyone. I worked with it a lot last October/November, but haven't had the need to revisit it recently. For those interested, does: texexec --pdf --mode=demo m-graph.tex ....work correctly? (m-graph is from tex/context/base/m-graph.tex, and the data files it expects are in doc/metapost/base/*.d) Am I the only one having problems, or were the syst-* macros changed after 31 October 2002 so as to conflict with something deep inside graph.mp? Lost in the murky detail of designing a page layout

I'm out of my depth, I've looked at the s-*.tex layouts, and have read chapter 3 of the manual, but am not confident in designing a page layout. For instance, I'm not sure how I ensure that vsize comes out as a multiple of baselineskips, or how to ensure that double sided pages are printed correctly. My initial design parameters (for a double sided page) are: 1) paper size = A4 2) hsize = 2.5 times the length of the lowercase alphabet in the default font -- lucida-bright at 12pt. i.e. \setbox0={abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz} \hsize=2.5\wd0 3) vsize = golden-ratio times hsize (rounded to integer baselineskips) = 1.62\hsize 4) backspace margin = hsize divided by seven 5) topspace margin = backspace margin. How do I translate these into my \setuplayout parameters?

Getting the PDF postscript fonts to work

Hello Anyone, Has anyone been able to use the standard PDF postscript fonts with context? I recently upgraded to tetex 2.0, latest context, so had to restart with the font stuff. 1. After tinkering I could get the URW stuff working, but I want the Adobe. 2. After even more tinkering I got something that seems to load the Adobe fonts, but when I look with Acrobat Reader it talks about Times New Roman and Arial fonts. Perhaps somebody has the right combination of .map files, pdftex.cfg, typefaces, typescripts, fontfaces/defines/whatever (get crazy of it), so I can just use the standard 15 PDF fonts. -- Live long and prosper, Berend de Boer

Error running metapost

Dear all, after installing the latest beta I tried to compile my old sources, but the metapost pass called from within a pdfetex run stopped with the error message: ! Equation cannot be performed (numeric=boolean). <to be read again> ; l.24 spotcolors := true ; Looking at the mpgraph file I see the following line: if unknown context_spec : input mp-spec ; fi ; and in my version of mp-spec spotcolors is declared to be boolean. Indeed, when I run 'mpost filename-mpgraph' I get no error message and all mp-* files are included. Any hint on where context_spec et al are set? Using variables in relation to the TOC

Hi all, While developing a manual I encounter the following problem. Each document of the manual carries a header, where a version number is placed. In this case the version number is a date. The manual table of contents requires, that the name of the document (chapter name) is placed followed by the version number which Ii mentioned above. I spent some hours to try to tweak things to get the desired result. - Unfortunately unsuccesfully. May be that I want to achieve something which is impossible due to the way TeX is generating the table of contents. - If you compile hte attached file you get a table of contents which looks in first instance as it is required. The 'only' problem is, that all documents get the version number defined in the setuparea (Compare the presentation of the version number to the versionnumbers as they appear in the header) Any suggestions? Hello All, After a number of years working with "classical" TeX/LaTeX I have been trying out ConTeXt. I like the structured approach and the control it gives the user and I have been trying it out on some of my working documents. Two questions: 1. On writing tables in LaTeX, there is an option p{ some length } that enables paragraph mode for one or more of the table's column entries. Is there something equivalent in ConTeXt? I don't seem to be able to find it in the manual. 2. My native language is Greek and I would like to have the capability to write documents in this language. There does not seem to be support for it in ConTeXt. Are there any directions, notes, how-to's, etc. around, for how to add support for an additional language in ConTeXt? I'd like to give it a try. First of all thanks guys for the p( ) pointer. Hans, re your questions: (1) what fonts (2) what encoding (3) what labels 1. I use the cbgreek fonts. A complete package was submitted to ctan on Dec 2002. Size is ~ 65-70 MB with full support for type1 and tfm that results in nicely looking pdf docs. They are the work of A. Syropoulos, one of the main contributors to greek babel and omega projects. 2. The encoding I use is the iso-8859-7. The iso-8859-7.def file is again written by A. Syropoulos. This works nicely in both my Win2k and Linux environments. A simple Left-Alt/Shift changes keyboard layout and I can use both greek and english in my documents. 3. Re labels I don't know what they are. A brief sample of a test tex doc follows: %-------------------- \documentclass[a4paper]{article} \usepackage[greek]{babel} \usepackage[iso-8859-7]{inputenc} \begin{document} Κανονικά ελληνικά, \textbf{έντονα ελληνικά}, \textit{πλάγια καλλιγραφικά}, \textsl{απλά πλάγια}. {\LARGE Κανονικά ελληνικά, \textbf{έντονα ελληνικά}, \textit{πλάγια καλλιγραφικά}, \textsl{απλά πλάγια}.} \thispagestyle{empty} \end{document} %-------------------- You should get through dvips a test.ps file with size ~ 158 kb. The how-to for my setup is: After installation of tetex-2.0 (see instructions on the tetex src tarball) 1. install iso-8859-7.def -> ../texmf/tex/latex/base/ 2. expand somewhere the cb.tar.gz fonts tarball and from it: a) copy drivers/*.mf -> ../texmf/fonts/source/public/cbgreek/ b) copy dvips/cbgreek.map -> ../texmf/dvips/config/ c) copy mf/*.mf -> ../texmf/fonts/source/public/cbgreek/ d) copy tfm/*.tfm -> ../texmf/fonts/tfm/public/cbgreek/ e) copy type1/*.pfb -> ../texmf/fonts/type1/public/cbgreek/ 3. add the following line to the appropriate place in your texmf/dvips/config/config.ps file p +cbgreek.map 4. add the following line to the appropriate place in your texmf/pdftex/config/pdftex.cfg file map +cbgreek.map 5. texhash your system In this way I have full support for modern greek in my LaTeX system. Dear Mr. Hagen. Some time ago I asked you for the Czech index in the ConTeXt. You have sent me Hudec's files. The zip file included these files: lang-sla.tex mult-con.tex cont-tmf.diff mult-com.tex Unfortunately these files only translates headers (like the name of the Index or chapter) into the Czech language. The real sorting of letters is not covered in it. Is there any other file? If not, how can I do it for myself? I tried to learn it from the Polish file, I was not able to make it work for me. Hello Hans, isn't something new in reading/processing XML attributes? I used it before more than half year, now I'm going to use it again -- I want to define in XML something like <td align="middle, lohi"/>...</td> and I want to process this in ConTeXt like \bTD[align={middle, lohi}] using something like \expanded{\bTD[align=\XMLop{align}]}. Chinese Number Problem

Hello, I am trying to set up ConTeXt to work properly with Chinese. Everything seemed fine until I discovered that there is some problem with the Chinese numbers. I have a TeX file with several chapters. I used texexec and dvipdfmx generated the PDF file without problems. But I found there are two things wrong (which supposed to be working). The first is that the two Chinese charaters before the list of contents (corresponding to the 'Contents' before English text) are missing. The second, all the chinese characters before the chapter titles in the list of contents are missing (corresponding to the English text 1 or 1.1, etc.). I tried to figure out what the problem is myself without success. I read file font-chi.tex and found some commands like: \def\chinesedigit#1#2% #2: suffix, here * or \empty {\udigit{\chineseencoding}{\number#1#2}} \def\normalchinesenumber#1% {\expandafter\dochinesenumber\number#1\relax\empty} I tried to use these commands in my file directly. But they didn't produce any output there, even no space left for the numbers inside {}. I am using MikTeX under Windows XP. I am using the latest ConTeXt beta to get the dvipdfmx working. Goodevening all, The examples in the 'natural tables' manual are nice [although I keep wondering why you would {\em ever} need some specimina], but what I'm looking I'm not able to fabricate. What I want is one line with words like invoice: date: etcetera, and the following line will contain the proper data [like in Victor Eijkhouts ntg-letter]. I'm not sure tables (maybe columns?) are the solution, but this is what I've got [a portion of it] sofar. It won't work, that is: somehow I'm not able to adjust the width of the columns? Customizing texutil --purge

I know I saw the answer to my question on the list couple of weeks back, but I seem to have lost it and search in the mailing list archives on the word "purge" gives very odd answers... The "Texutil explained" says on page 2 "texutil purge Afterwards, TEXutil reports the number of bytes regained. Optionally, you can pass a file pattern, thereby limiting the cleansing." As I'm a dummy, I don't seem to be able to put this in practice. I would like to get rid of the *.tuo files (and some others as well), so I tried texutil --purge *.tuo texutil --purge .tuo texutil --purge tuo but none of these have any effect whatsoever. So, how do I "pass a file pattern" so that texutil understands that I want to get rid of files called something.tuo? Greetings, Mari from snowy Finland

Cross referencing not working?

In December Giuseppe Bilotta reported that cross referencing had disappeared. Then it came back (at least until two weeks ago...) and again it has somehow disappeared, or it has a weird behavoir (from version: ConTeXt ver: 2003.1.31 fmt: 2003.2.4 int: english mes: english) Below is an example: if I put the "formula 1" before "formula 2" nothing gets numbered. However the other way around "formula 1" gets numbered but not "formula 2", nor "formula 3". Any comment is welcomed. I am slowly making progress on this font installation (well, it works with LaTeX, not yet with ConTeXt). Pagenumbers

Hi all, I have a large document with different chapters. At each chapter the pagenumbering is reset. (\setuppagenumgering[way=bychapter]) Now I would like to display also the total number of pages of each chapter e.g. Page 5 of 9. Is there a simple way to have Context to calculate these 'subtotals'? I tried to use \totalnumberofpages, but then I get the total number of pages of the whole document, which is not influenced by setting up the pagenumbering [bychapter] Willi

(Those files are regi-il5.tex and enco-il5.tex.) With regi-il5.tex I am able to type accented characters without any problems, if you disregard hyphenation. When hyphenation is taken into account, I am completely lost. Not that the words with accented characters are completely unhyphenated, but only some of them are. I am attaching my regi-il5.tex and a test file (and its DVI form, to save you from tinkering with your setup just to see the problems I describe below). Please note that I have tried many variations of both the macro I call (such as \definecharacter, etc.), and the way I type the substituted accents (\c c vs. \ccedilla). Here are the problems: - Even though the hyphenation for a\u{g}ra is correct, I cannot redefine it using ð (\u{g} in Latin5 encoding). I can redefine it using \u{g}, but then I lose all of its hyphenation. - Words which have one of \i (dotless i) or \.I characters are not hyphenated at all. This is most problematic in the second column of the sample text. - Some of the hyphenations are wrong. For example da-\u{g}-lar, it should be da\u{g}-lar. Similarly ta-\c{s}-lar should be ta\c{s}-lar. Also \c{c}o-rap\c{c}\i should have an hyphen before the second ccedilla (though I have an intuition that it is due to the right syllable being short, can it be?). I am also attaching a similar file for LaTeX (again, with related DVI output). Please notice how words containing dotless i characters are correctly hyphenated. Since ConTeXt and LaTeX share the same hyphenation patterns, I cannot see why they are generating different outputs. From texexec's output: language : patterns 2:2-tr-2 3:2-tr-2 4:2-en-2 5:2-uk-2 6:2-de-2 2-fr-2 9:2-it-2 2-nl-2 loaded Possible clash with hyphenation pattern files? Or do I have to explicitly state that I want tr hyphenation in my test file? (tr is the default language.) What can be the source of my problems? missing Dstroke & dstroke

I'm slowly getting into using DocBookInContext module for producing PDF output out of DocBook sources. One problem which I encountered is that I cannot get proper characters for two Croatian national letters: Dstroke & dstroke which are rendered as "D" & "d" and I see in mfonts.pdf (Fonts in ConTeXt) manual on p. 22nd that these chars are also not properly rendered. Is it some missing feature in ConTeXt since I remember that similar thing was present with LaTeX and it required some special *.sty file since those two characters cannot be handled like the rest of TeX accents? typescripts and environments

A familiar issue, but I'm still a bit confused about how to set up a proper typescript, and how to access it in a document. Can someone please look at the enclosed? What I don't understand is how to name these files and typescripts, where to put them, and how to access them in a document. This is the beginnings of a typescript to handle some OpenType fonts which have been converted to type 1. What I will want to be able to do is to say: base font = minionpro-osf footnote text font = minionpro-caption-osf title font = minionpro-display-osf section heading font = minionpro-subhead-osf Am I on the right track with the enclosed file? The environment file is at the bottom, but I'm not sure how to access it correctly. I've tried \environment[minionpro-osf], but it doesn't seem to work (though there might be other reasons I'm getting Computer Modern!). Thanks, Bruce

Hi Hans, In the manual it is claimed for the command \fixedspaces that (4.6 Word spacing) "After this command the ~ (tilde) generates a tight space with the width of a number." Hello, after a couple of hours of debugging I found out why I couldn't anymore set my PDF to maintain the zoom level; apparently, the command \dosetuppageview{standard} command was ignored/overruled. Postscript fonts: missing pfb files

Hello, everybody! My fight with the fonts continues, I think I managed to debug most of my problems. However, I found out that my TeXLive installation seems to lack some of the very basic postscript font files (i.e they do not exist on my computer) and thus I still cannot install all the fonts mentioned in the type-tmf.bat file (of which I now have a version that really works with latest TeXLive+Windows, if somebody is interested). The TeXfont manual says (p. 4, under "Generating metrics") "Installation here comes down to copying the afm and pfb files, as well as generating the tfm and vf files." This sentence leads me to believe that I cannot generate the missing pfb files myself out of something else, so where can I find them? I lack the following: urw/helvetic: uhvb8an.pfb, uhvbi8a.pfb, uhvr8an.pfb, uhvri8a.pfb, uhvri8an.pfb (No wonder Helvetica has been giving me gray hairs all the way through!) bit/charter (NOT bitstrea/charter on TeXLive): bchb8a.pfb, bchbi8a.pfb, bchr8a.pfb, bchri8a.pfb urw/bookman: ubkb8a.pfb, ubkbi8a.pfb, ubkr8a.pfb, ubkri8a.pfb I seem to have all the .afm files for these fonts, just the .pfb:s are totally missing - any ideas of where I could get them and how? For the record: the combination I use just now is WinXP+TeXLive 7+(newest) ConTeXt, but I think the problem originates from TeXLive 7 full installation and is not system dependent. Hello! I'd messed up with my computer so I removed my old ConTeXt and installed the newest zip file instead (January 26 version). Unfortunately it declines to make pdf files, not even out of the example files from the web page. How to do math in ConTeXt?

Hi everyone! I appologise if this question is answered before. I was trying to do some math in ConTeXt today, but failed. What I wanted to do was something similar to the \begin{cases}\end{cases} thing in LaTeX (amsmath?). For the non-LaTeX-math-users, its something like this: f(x)= \begin{cases} 0 & \text{if}\ x<0\\ 1 & \text{if}\ x\geq 0 \end{cases} and one gets something like this: / 0 if x<0 f(x) = < \ 1 if x>=0 I didn't find any commands that did this so I searched alittle in the maillist archive and didn't find any solution to it. Are the amsmath commands available in one or another way or are the implemented somehow? I found newmat and m-math but I didn't find a solution in either of them. Are there any docs about how to type math in ConTeXt? I am also interested in things that looks like eqnarray and other environments in LaTeX's amsmath... Thanks in advance, Micke P

Footnote numbering

Hi, is there a possibility to restart the numbering of footnotes? (i.e. i, ii, iii,... in the front matter, and then 1,2,3... in the body). I could switch to the roman numerals quite easily but I could not manage to let the new numbering start at 1. I also tried to use parts for that, which just led to funny page numbers but did not have any influence on the footnote numbering at all. Perhaps somebody knows a simple solution? Hi Hans, Recently I became aware of a file "tmpgraph.bck" as the result of a context run that is not removed by the command "texutil --purge". I cannot remember after which ConTeXt-beta change this started. Is the texutil-script in need of updating? piechartMP and context

Hi all, (especially Jens-Uwe) I just started to use the piechartMP package. I have succeeded in producing some quite nice charts using standalone metapost. But I am unable to convert these graphics to pdf via mptopdf, nor can I integrate them into context files. As soon as I try to switch to typesetting the labels using some TeX format, I get errors like 'Unable to make mpx file', or all labels simply show the same text, or... I have experimented with various setups, but I can't really locate the problem, sorry for this imprecise problem description. Can anybody provide me with some setup tips or a working setup? It would of course be best to have the labels typeset by context, respecting the MP environment of the document, but for the moment, a simply working setup would be a good start. Thanks, Eckhart

acronyms and xml?

I want to author documents in XML so I can reuse the content. How should I deal with acronyms, such that if I output to HTML I get all-caps, but if I typeset using ConTeXt (maybe using Simon's DocBook thing) I'd get small caps? Is there an element for this in DocBook, for example? Bruce

texexec --pages

Hi Hans, Today I decided to do some experiments with pdf. I tried the following command: texexec --pages=1:3,20 myfile.pdf texexec --pdfselect=1:3,20 myfile.pdf Both commands have identical failure: After starting the command, the 'myfile.pdf' is immediately renamed in texexec.pdf. Hereafter one should again type the input filename, which of course is not there anymore. - So texexec renames the input file while it still should load it with the original input-file name. nonstopmode

Hello out there, I am currently writing some editor support for ConTeXt and I would like to get the `nonstop' mode for (pdf)tex working. So I edited the texexec.ini and changed for tetex set TeXBatchFlag to -int=nonstopmode (it was -int=batchmode) just for a test. With this file: \starttext \input tufte \thisdoesnotexist \stopttext and running texexec error.tex I get: ================================================== [...] ! Undefined control sequence. l.5 \thisdoesnotexist ? R OK, entering \nonstopmode... ! Undefined control sequence. l.8 \stopttext ) ! Emergency stop. <*> &cont-en error.tex No pages of output. ================================================== but now with --batch (that I have changed to nonstopmode) I get ================================================== [...] language : patterns 2:2-en-2 4:2-de-2 5:2-fr-2 loaded specials : tex,postscript,rokicki loaded system : error.top loaded (./error.top run time : 1 seconds total run time : 1 seconds ================================================== So my question is: how do I get real nonstop mode (as with `R' above but from the beginning) and would you please add this option to texexec? ConTeXt doesn't accept some environments anymore

Hello, I just noticed that the 2003.1.10 version of context doesn't read environments anymore, when they are in the previous directory; I have to put them in the same directory as the processed file, it seems. Buffers and grouping

Hi all, I thought that \startbuffer and stopbuffer would cause grouping within the buffer. e.g. \startbuffer[mybuffer] \switchtobodyfont[small] a bunch of text \stopbuffer \starttext \section{First} \getbuffer[mybuffer] \section{Second} \getbuffer[mybuffer] \section{Third} \getbuffer[mybuffer] \section{Fourth} \getbuffer[mybuffer] \stoptext Compiling the above example results in a fontsiye decreasing step by step. I am using: ConTeXt ver: 2003.1.10 fmt: 2003.1.18 int: english mes: english How should I reverse to the originally setup fontsize: \setupbodyfont[ss,12pt] \starttext \section{One} text text \section{Two} \switchtobodyfont[small] much more text with need to typset in [small] \switchtobodyfont[normal] <------ This does not result in what I need.. \section{Four} text text Thanks for hints! Hi, There were quite some questions about this hackery mechanism. The problem is that it depends on pdf being reliable. I could reimplement it using some recent new trickery, but will look into that later (no time now). So, as a compromise, i made s-pre-50 to play with. I have no idea how well it works with the other styles, but at least it shows some trickery (as well as force GB into source-mode, i.e. reading core-box.tex -) I uploaded a new beta (this one also repairs a few bugs, as well as provides more extensive side float support (i hope things will not fail too much), on which i will upload an updates details.pdf somewhere next week. Now that \presentationstep seems usable, I have another problem. And since - text would have to be above the background but below the shield - the shield would have to be above the text but below the background I have no idea how to do it. Just sticking to plain backgrounds? Ok, that's not really bad. But those in the audience who are not interested in what you say anyway are often easy to impress by a fancy background - at least. Greetings! Is it possible to have parts of the ConTeXt file processed conditionally? I'm hoping to be able to do something like: (in ConTeXt file) Question: What is the derivative of $e^{sqrt{x}}$\\ \some-command-start Answer: $\frac{d}{dx} e^{sqrt{x}} ... $ \some-command-end So that, in the command line, if I run "texexec --pdf quiz01.tex" then it will NOT include the answer section, but if I run "texexec --pdf quiz01.tex -some-other-command" it WILL also include the answer section. I'm confident this can be done through an if or if-defined construct. However, I could not find such commands/macros in the ConTeXt manuals (both the beginners and the detailed manual). Justifying paragraphs.

I receive many MSWord documents which I then convert to plain text or LaTeX etc. Typically all the characters in a paragraph are crowded onto one line. This makes editing a bore. I can use: gqap to change an individual paragraph to a series of lines of standard length. But I haven't found a global way to do it to all paragraphs. \presentationstep: recent changes?

A couple of months ago, Hans posted the attached example in response to a desperate request for a working \presentationstep. I remember having tried it, and it worked at that time. With my current context (2003.1.10), this is no longer the case. The whole text area is covered by the presentationshield, and clicking the Whatever-Button has no effect. I guess there have been changes to the \presentationstep mechanism. Since I would (maybe) like to use this for a publication soon, I'm wondering how to get it working with a recent context. Eckhart

Dear All! Is there in ConTeXt an equivalent of LaTeX2e automatic selection of font shape depending on font size? For example, the following LaTeX statement (from type1ec.sty): \DeclareFontShape{OT1}{cmr}{m}{n}{ <-6> cmr5 <6-7> cmr6 <7-8> cmr7 <8-9> cmr8 <9-10> cmr9 <10-12> cmr10 <12-17> cmr12 <17-> cmr17 }{} means: for cmr family in OT1 encoding (series=medium, shape=normal) LaTeX will use: for font sizes < 6pt use (scaled) external font cmr5 for font sizes >= 6pt and < 7pt, use (scaled) external font cmr6 for font sizes >= 7pt and < 8pt, use (scaled) external font cmr7 . . . for font sizes >= 12pt and < 17pt, use (scaled) external font cmr12 for font sizes >= 17pt, use (scaled) external font cmr17). For example, if 5,5 pt font size of cmr font family in OT1 encoding (series=medium, shape=normal) is needed for typing text or math, LaTeX will automatically use external font cmr5 (cmr5.tfm), scaled to 5,5pt design size. Footonotes and footnote references not appearing on the same page

Hello, I have a problem with footnotes: the references and the footnotes do not fall on the same page as soon as there is numerous footnotes on a page (something that happens frequently in my work).
