Hello folks, I have been playing around with Context for over a month and I think it is a fantastic tool. Comparing it with LaTex it is a more general tool and gives you far more options. Now, I was wondering if any Context user has created photobooks with contexts and how they went about doing it. I would love to hear people's experiences. Thanks in advance, Fidel.

Hello, Thank you again for very timely and great answers to my question yesterday. I am finding that implementing things in Context is usually easier than I expect. This is very nice. Our company decided to switch to context from latex recently. It seems to have been a very good decision. Thanks for all the work you do to make context so fun to use. We have one last thing to get translated from latex to context. David Kastrup wrote a bit of latex for us (included below) that magically writes out the absolute xy position of each paragraph and image to a log file for us. We pass some extra information to the commands that get put in the log file for us, but in the end we mainly need a way to get the absolute xy coordinates of the bounding boxes for each paragraph, each section title, each image and each image caption. Is there a way to get this information with context already? Or do I need to get a new module written? vertical kerning for TwoThird needed

Hi, comparable to the pre-defined \threequarter I want to write a \TwoThird. The following looks quite good (with my respective font settings) ... \def\TwoThird{{\tx\high{\txx 2}}\kern-0.1em/\kern-0.1em{\txx 3}} ... but still the "2" is a bit to high. OK, I've updated to the latest context via Gerben's i-installer on my mac osx 10.4.6. I have no idea what texmfstart is nor do I understand its purpose. Hi, I am organising my figures in a "figurelibrary" (see www.pragma- ade.com/general/manuals/xfigures-s.pdf) It is great! But: shouldn't the thumbnails in the section "Figure collection" link to the whole page views (first section of the pdf file)? I believe that the first time I tried it that was the case, but I am not sure. In any case, now they don't. Cheers, Jörg

help for the font problem

Hi, all I have no problem to get an pdf output using XeTeX and XeLaTeX but, I got some errors using XeTeX+ XonTeXt. After many tests, I think that the error is related with the font (including Korean) which I installed privately. If I use the fonts installed by system, then everything is OK. The followings are the errors and error message I got. 1) There is a white space instead of figures. No error messages but no figures. However, if I changed the font, I got the pdf output directly containing figures. 2) font error message: xetext.xdv -> xetext.pdf [1 ** NOTICE: This document contains a `Preview & Print only' licensed font ** ] ** ERROR ** CFF: Invalid character. Output file removed. TeXExec | runtime: 5.386493 ~ However, I could get an pdf texts using "xdv2pdf" but still no figures. If I changed the font, then I got the pdf output without xdv2pdf. Hence, all the errors are originated from the font. I wonder whether it is the problem in my system only or not. Would someone try the following file using the given font(free to use)? Create a directory using tex

latest ConTeXt and \quote

I updated to 2006.08.29 11:11 and find now that \quote{} produces double quotes (“ ”) rather than single quotes (“ ”). \quotation{} still has its expected effect. Is this a bug or has something gone awry with my installation? Cheers, Alan

Hello, i have a simple (?) layout question. I want to typeset a doublesided text with a larger margin on one side. This margin will be filled with 'margin images' or 'margin remarks'. But sometimes, larger images have to be placed in the text+margin. Which commands, options or setups are correct, to get the same results on odd and even pages? positioning a watermark

Hello, I am trying to create alternating watermarks behind the text of a book on odd and even pages. I was able to get this working with overlays fine, except that I could not figure out how to position them. (I would like them in the bottom outside corners) Using layers I could get them to repeat across pages if I \setupbackgrounds[text][text], but only the text on the odd pages showed up. I would really like to use \setupbackgrounds[page] so my offsets are from the edge of the page. So I guess I have a couple of questions. Is it possible to position overlays? Is it possible to repeat layers using [page]? Any guess as to why only the odd pages showed the watermark in the code below? Bug in way=...?

Hi, Is setupwhatever[way=....] supposed to be global? Suppose I \setupformulas[way=bysection] for a section, and want to switch back to \setupformulas[way=bytext] in the next section, it does not work. Similar behaviour happens with \setupcaptions. Hi Hans and Taco, I am back with some more math request---one alignment construct, one inner math alignment construct, and one formula tagging request. These are primarily to "complete" the context math environments. I am posting here rather than on the dev list, so that other math users can also contribute. This is a loong mail. 1. Multiline equations (they are called multline equations in amsmath) This is used to write multiline formulas (where alignement does not make sense). The first line is left aligned, the last line is rightaligned and all the middle lines are middle aligned. The entire formula gets only one number. If the formulas are numbered on the right, then the formula number is located on the last line; if the formulas are numbered on the left, then the formula number is located on the first line. The alignment of a single line can be changed. The first and the last line have a gap equal to \multlinegap from the text border. If the formula is numbered, the gap is used only for the line without the number. I do not know what is a good syntax for this command. First of all, I think we should call it multiline (rather than multline as in ams). PS: I do not use multline of amsmath frequently. If someone does use it, please read this carefully to ensure that I did not misread the manual. 2. In amsmath, most of alignment constructs exist in two forms: outer and inner. The mathalignment implemented in core-mat.tex corresponds to outer alignment. The inner alignment is same as outer alignment, but is only as wide as necessay. The most common amsmath inner alignment constructs are aligned and gathered. It is easiest to explain by means of an example. The innermath environments should take three types of options (n=...,m=....,distance=....,etc, that are passed to \startalign; left=...,right=..., that put the left and right delimiters; and location=high|low|lohi that align the innermath environment to the baseline. Notice that the crude definition that I have given does not handle location nicely. I know Tex's limitation of scaling left and right delimiters on both sides of the math centerline, making it difficult to handle left|right and location correctly. It there is no easy fix, left|right can be left out. Such a construct will take care of aligned, gathered and split environments of amsmath. 3. Formula tagging amsmath allows formulas to be tagged. I will explain amsmath's behaviour and hope that Hans can come up with the context way of doing such things. Occasionally, one wants to tag a formula, e.g. \placefomrula[a] \startformula a x = b \stopformula \placetaggedformula[b]{*} \startformula x = \frac {b}{a} \stopformula should come out as a x = b (1) x = b/a (*) Notice that ( and ) correspond to left and right in setupformulas. It should also be possible to place a tag without these brackets, so \placetaggedformulawithoutbrackets[c]{**} \startformula b = ax \stopformula should come out as b = ax ** <--- no brackets here Maybe, instead of placetaggedformulawithout brackets, one can simply have \placetaggedformula[c][left=,right=]{**} but in such cases it is easy to get confused with the reference and options. I am not sure what is a good way to do this. It should also be possible to refer to these tagged formulas. So \in{formula}[b] should give * and \in{formula}[c] should give **. The tag should be set in text mode, so that one can say \placetagformula {Answer} and the Answer will come out in text mode. Thanks, Aditya

Hello, I have used Latex in the past and have the following code that inserts information on certain pages using afterpage. strutheight and (german) umlauts

I need this for several boxes with a mp overlay as background and centered text. The height of the boxes is equal, so all text should be placed on the same baseline. Currently I box the text and set the height manually to \strutheight. But a more "global" solution would be prefered. Hello, There's a strange behaviour with comments when using \startcomment...\stopcomment. In some cases the comments are skipped. The comment always appears with \comment{...}. The truth is that I haven't bee able to truly understand if this is a generic example or I can define my own commands with this and how the syntax would be used. Layout and textwidth/textmargin

Hello, I wonder if it is possible to setup a layout with these requirements: - it can be doublesided, that is, when doublesided the left margin (LM) and right margin (RM) are different and mirrored on right/left pages. - the headings (section, etc.) start just after the left margin. - the text body has an extra left text margin (TM) that is not mirrored. Here is an example of the expected output in doublesided mode: Left Page: LM TM RM |<--7--><-- 8--> <-5->| | 1. This is a Title | | | | This is the text body | | that has a bigger left | | margin. | Right Page: RM TM LM |<-5-><-- 8--> <--7-->| | The test continues on | | This page. | | | | 2. After jumping through hoops, with some help I managed to get XeTeX running and using TTF fonts directly with pdfTeX. But before I go any further I would like to know what is your opinion in using one or the other. When researching a bit on XeTeX I read there were several caveates vs. using pdfTeX with LaTeX. Is this the same? In ConTeXt. What can I expect to work and what not? If TTF can be used with pdfTeX (with some effort) what is the advantage of using XeTeX with ConTeXt? Thanks, Pepe

Floating figure

Hi, I want to use a floating figure in my text. I found an example on how to use hangsidefloat, but my results are less than desirable. Basically I have a long image I want to put on the side of the text. Given that the text does not start at the beginning of the page and I don't have extense paragraphs and the image is between two sections, the final layout looks poor. I would like to know if someone can recommend some way to improve the look of my document. Fors this purpose I am including some sample commands that illustrate my problem. Attached also I am including an image file to work with those commands. Any help is appreciated. Empty last page, broken markings ??

Hello, The last page in my documents is always empty. Font's in Gerben Wierda's TeX distribution and ConTeXt

Hello, I am using GW's TeX distribution with ConTeXt. I am interested in using a different font other than Computer Modern. This distribution seems to come with a ton of fonts (More than I need at least). Using the basic ConTeXt provisions to access the fonts I am able to access some fonts successfully (Like Palatino or Euler) and some unsuccsessfully (Like Optima, Iwona or Kurier). Ex: Works: \definetypeface [MyFace] [rm] [serif] [palatino] [default] [encoding=ec] Does not work: \definetypeface [MyFace] [ss] [sans] [iwona] [default] [encoding=ec] I realize this might be a very basic question but: What's going on? :-) I would appreciate if anyone could at least point me in the direction of some documentation that would explain why these fonts work/don't work. Message supression revisited.

I compile a Context file using an F key in my Gvim session. I I waste a lot of time watching messages scroll past in my Gvim window. What I am looking for is a command line switch or a combination of command line switches that will suppress ALL messages except for: 1. error messages that cause the compile to halt. 2. The message(s) that tells me that compilation is completed. If necessary I can live without this message. With most programs one can divert all ordinary messages to /dev/null but fatal error messages still return to the console or the console-equivalent (the 2> messages in Linux-speak.). Newbie question: Linebreak after number in figure caption?

Hello, I would like to have Figure captions that look like this (centered, a newline between the number and the description): Figure 1 The description of the figure For now I put the linebreak manually in each caption text as you can see below. Putting the linebreak inside the style parameter indeed works, but the result is that "Figure 1" is left-aligned, even though the figure description is centered. I'm using a rather old version of ConTeXt and teTeX, but I have reproduced this behavior on the ConTeXt live page. I'm probably missing something really obvious, so can anyone suggest a better way of doing this? header misaligned and columns problem

Also, I use 2 columns in most of the book, but 4 chapters uses 3 columns. I use \startcolumns[n=2, balance=yes,distance=8mm] or \startcolumns[n=3, balance=yes,distance=5mm] In two columns is ok, but in 3 columns, all the 3 columns donŽt fit the whole textwidth, I mean, the sum of the 3 columns width plus the 2 intercolumns space are less (about 1cm) than 150mm, as setuplayout says. BibTex module with AMS formatting

Hello everyone, I am a new to ConTeXt and typesetting in general. I want to type set a document that includes refereces using the AMS format. So far I have set up in my environment the following: \usemodule[bib] \usemodule[bibltx] \setupbibtex[database=MybibTeX,sort=author] And later in my product \completepublications I have been doing some tests, the reference list appears in the end with the numbers, but the actual references in the text just show up empty, like this []. I execute ConTeXt in the following way: texexec --once mydoc.tex bibtex mydoc.tex texexec --pdf mydoc.tex The BibTex module says I should run ConTeXt one more time, but it has not helped. I am not sure if I should use --pdf since I remember there were some issues with compiling directly to PDF using LaTeX when using BibTex. I am using context : ver: 2006.08.10 12:52 on MacOSX 10.4/Intel installed with Gerben Wierda's i-installer. Any ideas how to solve this issue? Thanks, Pepe

footnotes and variable rules

Hi to all, In some countries it is traditional that footnote rules have the following behaviour: When a footnote doesn't fit entirely in one page, and has to be continued in the next one, the footnote rule in the second page has to be longer, to show that the footnote doesn't start there, but in the preceeding page. So, if you normally use a e.g. 20%\textwidth rule, the rule in the following page has to be longer, typically 100%\textwidth; if you don't use footnote rule, the following page has to have a e.g. 20%\textwidth rule. In LaTeX this can be done with the footmisc package. Can this be done with ConTeXt, e.g. redefining \normalnoterule? Thanks in advance, Ricard

A few questions (mostly about fonts)

Hi! I'm fairly new to ConTeXt (which I greatly admire, by the way) and after reading a couple of provided manuals, I have some lingering questions. I thank anyone in advance for replying to any number of them. The fonts manual mentions how TeX is often qualified as 'the font mess'. Well, yeah, my head hurts right now... :-( Here are some font-related issues that are very important to me: a) Somehow I can't come up with small caps in a Times font. Is this normal? This happens either by using \sc or \setupcapitals[sc=yes] along with \cap. b) LaTeX has a package for the International Phonetic Alphabet called tipa. Is it possible to use it in ConTeXt? If not, can anybody point me to the relevant manuals that will help me incorporate official IPA fonts (say, the TTF version) in my ConTeXt installation? I'm using the stand-alone Windows distribution, btw. Two language related issues: c) There was a French language specific package in LaTeX that made possible the direct use of accented characters in the source text (like é, à, ô) without using the explicit commands themselves. Can this be achieved in ConTeXt (because right now their direct use simply halts the compiling)? I would believe so, since the manual for French documents by Peter Münster shows how to set up automatic spacing before the strong punctuation marks (! ? ; :) without explicit commands every time. I'm guessing the strategy would be the same with accented characters, but so far I haven't been able to make it work. d) Is it possible to build some sort of macro that would automatically make \quotation marks different when inside another \quotation command? Basically, we use « » (the French guillemets) as standard quotation marks, but we use single quotes instead inside another quotation. At this point, I'd only need a yes or no answer. It would ease my mind to know there can be a way to streamline this usage of quotation marks, thereby simplifying greatly the input text. And finally, a silly question: e) If purists say that LaTeX is to be pronounced latek, is ConTeXt to be pronounced contekt? :-) Thanks for your help! Jeff Smith Québec, Canada

Bold rules with TABLE

Hi, As this is my first mail to the list I'd like to start by thanking Hans and all other ConTeXt contributors. I stumbled upon ConTeXt just recently and I have fallen in love badly. :) Now to my question. Is it possible to control the rule thickness of a specific frames with TABLE, i.e. something like \setupTABLE[row][1][bottomframe=1pt] \setupTABLE[column][1][leftframe=2pt] If not, I'd guess it could be possible to fake this by inserting extra rows and columns with zero height and width, respectively, and use the rulethickness parameter to change the thickness of all their frames. texexec.rb + pdfetex ignoring map files in $TEXMFPROJECT

Using older ConTeXt minimals based on texexec.pl, I was able to export TEXMFPROJECT=${PWD}/texmf in each projects directory and use fonts local to just that project. Switching to the latest minimal with texexec.rb, pdfetex can't find my custom *.map files. Interestingly, it does find my custom type-*.tex files. So, I showed ConTeXt to a friend of mine. He said he wanted to try it and now -- well, you don't want to know how he swears :). We're trying to do a presentation... Anyways, I'm trying to help him... But I (we) have some problems: I managed to write something like this (it's never been so hard to write a newline!): #v+ \startsetups{myhead} \vbox{% \getmarking[sectionnumber]\crlf\getmarking[section]\par \hskip12pt\getmarking[subsectionnumber]\crlf\getmarking[subsection]} \stopsetups \setupheadertexts[] \setupheadertexts[\setups{myhead}][pagenumber] #v- That does, what it should: display section and subsection atop of each other. So, but now, he wants to have an "Introduction", which should show up in the header but without a number. I tried "\subject" but "\getmarking[section]" only returns the section, not the subject (I thought they were interlinked somehow, but...). So, is there any way to do this apart from "\ifx\getmarking[sectionnumber]{-1}" or so? Next question: is it possbible to align the text of, well, "text", i.e. the body text, vertically centered on every page? "\setupbackgrounds" won't work here. On a side note: why does it have an align-parameter, then? This one is "a bonus" for me: can someone point me in a direction where to start to build a "progress meter"? beamerstyle has a nice template where it shows the section as text and the subsections as open dots (all of them) with the current subsection as a filled dot. If I outcomment \startcolumnset, it works ok, otherwise the figure is no longer left aligned and there is a big gap between the figure and the text. Any idea? When \placelist[section][criterium=local] is used inside of \startappendices, no list is included. I don't see any error messages. I scoured the docs but found neither indication that this is the desired behavior nor any idea how to change this behavior. feature request: external figures with XeTeX

Hello Hans, Would it be possible to add high-level support (\externalfigure) for inclusion of external figures in XeTeX? (I didn't know that it worked - I remember a failed experiment from some time ago, but it might have been my fault.) There are two commands: \XeTeXpdffile <filename> <optional options> for PDF (supporting inclusion of different pages) \XeTeXpicfile <filename> <optional options> for "everything else" So for example this should work: \XeTeXpicfile "abc.png" width 8cm (or xscaled 1000 yscaled 2000 for example) (However I don't know which all the available options are.) It's sometime boring to find a good value... As a result: Considering two png files with w1*h1 and w2*h2, is it possible to constrain the total width of the figure as: 1. scalefactor1*h1 = scalefactor2*h2 2. scalefactor1*w1 + scalefactor2*w2 = .8\textwidth Two equations and two variables (scalefactor1 and scalefactor2) ? Dunno if ConTeXt can solve this kind of calculation straightforwardly... I assume here we're able to get wi and hi and one give an explicit "totalwidth" value... Moreover, one can use it for i externalfigure on a single row... but with [N*M], it's more complicated (we can use a reference row and proceed) and I don't need it for the moment ;) Cheers, Renaud

Hi, I want a setup in which section numbers are Roman (I, II, etc.) and subsection numbers are Character (A, B, etc. without the section number prefixed). This is easy to achieve using \setupsection[section-3][bodypartconversion=Romannumerals] \setupsection[section-4][bodypartconversion=Character, previousnumber=no] However, when I reference these sections, I want \in[section] to give I (which it does happens) and \in[subsection] to give I-A. I asked this question a couple of days ago, but didn't get any takers. I don't want to be a pest, but it's frustrating to be so close yet unable to solve this final problem. Let's see if rephrasing the question helps. I'm trying to use \doifnumberelse in a \setuplist numbercommand= but it isn't working. The simplified example below shows the very specific table of contents layout I'm trying to accomplish. You will note that both the chapter number and the appendix letter are labeled with "Appendix" when in fact I want the chapter to be labeled "Chapter". compiling project files

Hi there, I'm a complete ConTeXt newbie, so please be patient with me. :) I'm putting together a book and I'm trying to use the project structure that Context likes so much. My components come out beautifully--they are chapters in the book. The product file is the actual book. I don't have the code in front of me, but it looks very much like the examples given in the manuals and at ContextGarden. When I texexec it, it runs but only produces and empty table of contents with the word Contents at the top. It won't list the chapters, forget about actually printing their content. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong? I'm guessing this might not be enough info for you to help. I'll try to answer any questions as best I can. Thanks and all best, Derek

I have read a great deal about the details of texmfstart. I still don't have a handle on what its purpose is. Did anyone write a manual on the program or create a comprehensive wiki entry? Extra vertical space in intertext

Hi, There is an extra vertical space in the first set of formulas, while the vertical spacing in the second set appears to be fine. I can not figure out why this should happen. I still can't figure this problem one out, from a few months ago, and it happens with a recent ConTeXt (2006.08.08 21:51). The figure searching code gets confused if a file of the same basename (but in a different directory) has already been loaded. Here is a minimal min.tex to show what I mean: \starttext \setupexternalfigures[directory={1}] \placefigure[here][ch1fig]{should be 1/fig-1.pdf}{\externalfigure[fig-1.pdf]} \setupexternalfigures[directory={2}] \placefigure[here][ch2fig1]{should be 2/fig-1.pdf}{\externalfigure[fig-1.pdf]} \placefigure[here][ch2fig2]{should be 2/fig-2.pdf}{\externalfigure[fig-2.pdf]} \stoptext Probably it's a silly idea to use \setupexternalfigures within the body, but the same problem happens when using components (where each component's preamble has a similar line), where it makes more sense. Here is the directory structure, and all the files are attached as a small (15KB) .tgz: min.tex 1/fig-1.pdf 2/fig-1.pdf 2/fig-2.pdf The final (third) figure is correctly found as 2/fig-2.pdf. But the second figure is reused from 1/fig-1.pdf because another fig-1.pdf has already been found: as 1/fig-1.pdf. Here is the relevant bit from the texexec output: <./1/fig-1.pdf> figures : dimensions of 1/fig-1.pdf loaded from figurefile itself (./min.tuo) (/home/sanjoy/texmf/tex/context/base/pdfr-ec.tex) floatblocks : 1 placed figures : figureobject fig-1.pdf is reused floatblocks : 2 placed <./2/fig-2.pdf> figures : dimensions of 2/fig-2.pdf loaded from figurefile itself floatblocks : 3 placed One part of ConTeXt does know the right figure path. A \getfiguredimensions[fig-1.pdf] after the second \placefigure will trigger a kpathsea search for 2/fig-1.pdf, which it finds. I would like the caption to be placed in the margin (lining either with the top or the bottom of the figure). I didn't find a way to do this. Does anybody know how to achieve this? I'm trying to achieve a specific table of contents layout. The problem I'm running into is adding the word "Chapter" before the chapter number and "Appendix" before the appendix letter. Hallo! In \setupfloats[] what exactly is the difference between textmethod and sidemethod? Compared with the gridsize, why does a 1 point window (method=2) help when typesetting on grids? Isn't 1% (method=1) much more in the most cases than 1 point? Wolfgang

Hi. When writing math I like avoiding $ whenever possible by defining my math operators with \mathematics, e.g. \def\grp{\mathematics{G}}. So far I was using this like I use \EnsureMath in LaTeX, but now I'm running into problems in MPgraphics: Texexec compiles the following file fine until I add the paragraph called "Math in Math in MP". There it seems to somehow choke on too many $ and \relax. Is there a better way to do such definitions? Thanks, Boris. --silent switch seems not to work.

The --silent parameter seems to have no effect. I still get messages listing every typescript in use on every pass: e.g., (/hdb1/usr/local/texlive/2005/texmf-dist/tex/context/base/type-exa.tex) (/hdb1/usr/local/texlive/2005/texmf-dist/tex/context/base/type-syn.tex) (/hdb1/usr/local/texlive/2005/texmf-dist/tex/context/base/type-enc.tex) (/hdb1/usr/local/texlive/2005/texmf-dist/tex/context/base/type-siz.tex) (/hdb1/usr/local/texlive/2005/texmf-dist/tex/context/base/type-map.tex) (/hdb1/usr/local/texlive/2005/texmf-dist/tex/context/base/type-spe.tex) (/hdb1/usr/local/texlive/2005/texmf-dist/tex/context/base/type-akb.tex) (./type-charter.tex The above is repeated about four times. All this trivia slows down the compile process significantly. I am using texexec 5.4.3. I get warning messages telling me to use texmfstart instead but since that script is not functional on my machine I just use texexec. It seems to work OK except for the --silent script. Hello, Some time ago Jonathan implemented a new \XeTeXglyphindex command to retrieve the glyph from current font by name (it currently only works for OpenType, but that's the most important). \getglyph is already taken, I used it in the example below just because I didn't think of a better name. Would it name sense to provide a \namedglyph macro in ConTeXt for XeTeX users as well? (Hopefully the feature will be available in pdfTeX as well ;) I don't mind if LaTeX & ConTeXt use the same syntax every now and then ;) (In the future: It might make sense to provide an optional field to retrieve a glyph from any font, not just from the current one, but I'm not sure about what the exact interface should be and if it would be optional it can be added later anyway.) Any thoughts? IŽm using context on slackware 10.2, I donŽt have a command "context". IŽm using "texexec". ItŽs the same? Font Question: Specific font sizes not working.

Greetings all, In the last week or so I started having a problem with fonts: what once worked stopped doing so, giving me the default font rather than my chosen fonts. I finally figured out that it is only certain sizes that are not working. For example, with: \usetypescriptfile[jensonpro] \usetypescript[jenson] \switchtobodyfont[jenson,11pt] \starttext Testing. \stoptext "\switchtododyfont" sizes 8pt, 10pt, 11pt, 13pt all still work, while 9pt and 12pt no longer do so... I recently updated ConTeXt and it remains the same. No change was made to my typescript files, and indeed in \definebodyfont those sizes are definitely listed: \starttypescript [serif] [Opticals] [size] \definebodyfont [13pt,12pt,11pt,10pt,9pt,8pt][rm] ... \stoptypescript Any clues?
