Hello! I have a few questions about ignoring unnecessary spaces and blank lines. The following example illustrates my problem. In the first start/stop pair text after \startcommand is not bold as it should be, in the second it is bold but blank line is before. I've tried to fix this with various manipulations with \noindent with moderate success. Another problem is necessity to explicitly add % character before \stopcommand to ignore newline. How to do this inside macro with this combination of lines and sidebar? getting characters

While fiddling with character strings I found the \getfirstcharacter macro which is very handy. However, I am consuming a character string character by character. Although I have a macro for that, I think it is a good policy to stay as much as possible within the ConTexT framework when concocting macro's to be used under ConTeXt. Now for the question. \getfirstcharacter puts the first character in \firstcharacter. I looked for a macro containing the rest of the string but could not find one. Something like: \getfirstcharacter{abc} then \firstcharacter = a \lastcharacters = bc This will make it possible to process a string character by character, in the same way as \processcommalist does with comma separated strings. But possibly this is already somewhere in the code and I overlooked it. yours sincerely, dr. H. van der Meer

\dot & lucida

Hi all, I use lucida fonts for my documents with \usetypescriptfile[type-buy] \loadmapfile[ec-bh-lucida.map] \usetypescript[lucida][ec] \setupbodyfont[lucida,10pt] When I will use \dot in math formula, the result seems to be a \prime\prime. It works without lucida... Strange ??? I don't understand the reason of this behavior. I suspect the use of ec, am I right ? Anyway, it's strange ! Renaud

itemize & indent

Hi all, \startnarrower[left] \startitemize[1] \item .... \stopitemize \stopnarrower Is there another solution in order to ident itemize ? Since many french documents need indentation of every paragraph and itemize, maybe it will be a good idea to manage this behavior as a langage issue... For example, I use \setupindenting[first,medium,yes] but I need \indent after \section{dummy} in order to obtain indentation of my first paragraph.

\startalignment etc. require text immediately after

One phenomenon I have repeatedly come accross but not quite understood... If I have \startalignment, \startnarrower, etc., then there has to be text immediately after the start command. As small example: \startalignment[center] \bTABLE \bTR \bTD something \eTD \eTR \eTABLE \stopalignment This should create a single-cell table in the middle of the page. It does not, the text is in the left. If I add something small (a strut), then everything works fine: \startalignment[center] \strut \bTABLE \bTR \bTD something \eTD \eTR \eTABLE \stopalignment Any text has the same effect as the strut. If the text is added to the end, it does not have any effect, i.e. the start has no effect. After some quick experimenting it seems evident that there has to be text after the start command. A figure or a table won't do. Why? And does this occur with any start-stop pair (sounds odd) or just with a few? And what is the kosher way of solving this problem? This must be a FAQ, but I could not find the search terms to find an answer. TIA, - Ville

Math Cases

Is it possible to number each part of the cases environment. I want \startformula a = \cases{ b, & \text{ if something} \cr c, & \text{ if something else} \cr} \stopformula to come out as { b if something (1) a = { { c if something else (2) Also, is it possible to have subnumbered equations, that is can I get (1a) and (1b) instead of (1) and (2). AutoDroppedCaps and indenting

This may be a silly question, but it appears the use of \AutoDroppedCaps (or \DroppedCaps) causes indenting settings to do away. With \AutoDroppedCaps, none of the paragraphs are indented. If \AutoDroppedCaps is enabled, if I place \indenting[yes] immediately after the first word of the first paragraph (so it looks like "Para \indenting[yes] 1"), then the 3rd paragraph is indented, but the second one is still flush-left. lijgatures in LM

Hello, (the Dutch team), Is it possible to prevent the "IJ" ligature in ec encoding in LM fonts in ConTeXt somehow (except with manual intervention in every word containing IJ)? I checked the behaviour in LaTeX with \usepackage[T1]{inputenc} with the default font (some kind of Type 1 CM, but not LM), but it seems that only LM changes I and J to a ligature (grrr ...). With the font in LaTeX it works OK. "pdftotext" only knows how to convert the LaTeX document properly. With the document prepared by ConTeXt, it fails to recognize the ligature properly (searching in Acrobat works however). Besides the fact that I and J separately (without a ligature) look much better, at least in Slovenian words. Thanks, Mojca If any expert for ligatures is reading this: is it fair that "ccaron" + "k" ("h") have negative kerning, while "c" + "b" has no kerning at all? I guess that "ck" was made because of the Germans, but at the same time I guess that they don't need "čk" at all and I have a feeling that the caron almost "bumps" into the serif. I compared with LaTeX, but that font uses a smaller caron. (Without EC encoding there's no negative kerning after ccaron present anyway.)

setupheadertexts + kap/uppercase

Hello, I think I have a expand problem. I want to have \setupheadertexts[pagenumber][{\getmarking[chapter][current]}][section][pagenumber] with the chapter in \uppercase/\kaps. The problem is that adding a \uppercase or \kap before the {\getmarking} ends up with nothing and all my attemps with expand* ended up with either the same result or with a TeX error message. Using \setupheader[style=kap] (or =cap) does not work - as TeX bails out: ! Undefined control sequence. \p!doifinstringelse ...ifinstringelse #2#1}@@\war Any idea how to solve this?
