Okay, this gives me some comfort as it seems to confirm that I do have UTF-8 as I thought. I'm seeing twos, threes and fours of the triplets you describe, and no evidence of high-ascii single chars nor of ^@. So I'm pretty sure it is UTF-8. Thanks for this. > I've only tested on tetex-3. I just need you to try out a unicode accented character within an <mtext> element inside MathML. Here's my template again - put an unicode accented char where 'HERE' appears: \useXMLfilter[utf]\usemodule[mathml] \starttext\startXMLdata <formula><math><mtext>HERE</mtext></math></formula> \stopXMLdata\stoptext > You may want to give TeX-Live a test. It's usually my first port of call, but AFAIK it's not possible to control the way the web browser re-encodes stuff before it is submitted, so the results are not reliable. Struggling with lists

Salvete, in a presentation, I would like to have some links to external files at the lower end of the menu on the right. About newtexexec.rb

I found in the folder ...\scripts\ConteXt\ruby a file newtexexec.rb . I try it on some file and I obtain a good result. But I have two problems : 1)after having write the resulting pdf file (after the first run) the hard disk seems to write or to read many seconds and then the program seems to run again 2)the following file : ********************************** \startuseMPgraphic{fig} draw unitsquare scaled 3cm ; \stopuseMPgraphic \starttext \useMPgraphic{fig} \stoptext ********************************** gives a pdf but without the expected square (the file gives a good result with texexec) I am very curious about newtexexec.rb : I begin to learn Ruby some weeks ago. It seems that lots of editors try to 'help' by doing automatic guessing and automatic translations into other encodings, making it very difficult to tie things down. (And web browsers do that same when submitting things over the web, so I can't do what I usually do and test on Live.) I tend to use emacs, which I thought was a pretty safe bet, but maybe I should try something else? > What platform are you on? I'm testing on both Windows and (Redhat) linux, both with the current minimal ConTeXt installations (i.e. mswintex.zip and linuxtex.zip). They exhibit the same behaviour. columnset layout distortion

Hallo, I am working on our 40-anniversary scout group bulletin with a complex layout (twocolumn, footnotes, photos, pictures, flowing text in margin). I noticed weird behaviour. It is expressed by vertical shift of columns, please see the page 2 of http://typokvitek.com/tmp/layoutdistort.pdf source: http://typokvitek.com/tmp/layoutdistort.tex It seems that the problem is caused by switch to \ss font family continueing to a place of the page break. Any explanation/suggestion? startMPgraphics in texshow?

Salvete, it seems that the whole family of MPgraphics commands is missing in texshow – looking for “graphics” turns up no matches. Are they generated by some magical macro or missing because of their capital letters? regards, Christopher Creutzig

<mtext> UTF further problems

I'm still having trouble with UTF contents in <mtext> tags in MathML content. It's difficult to send a sample because UTF isn't preserved well either by email or when sending files to the ConTeXt Live server, but I'd really appreciate it if somebody could help. When I replace 'HERE' in the following snippet with any UTF encoded accented character, it comes out wrong: \useXMLfilter[utf]\usemodule[mathml] \starttext\startXMLdata <formula><math><mtext>HERE</mtext></math></formula> \stopXMLdata\stoptext Can anyone help? I need some advices/guidelines before start writing my PhD thesis

Hi, I need some advices/guidelines before start writing my PhD thesis. I'm completely new to TeX and of course to Context but I'm convinced that Microsoft Word is far away from being the right tool for writing a long document. Well, in the past I had some big big headaches. At this moment I've to make a choice: continue using Word or start learning a new tool, which will probably consume much of my time. So, I'm in a dilemma. That's why I'm asking for help. Is it really worth learning Context? I mean, does this package deal efficiently with some important things like TOC, cross-references, bibliography, figures, math, .? Is it too hard to learn (for a mere mortal, of course)? What about support for different languages, in particular for Portuguese? If I choose Context, can some somebody give me some guidelines/advices? I've already downloaded mswincontext.zip and I'll start studying/testing Context. Thank you. Alex alex.r(a)netcabo.pt

Hi to all, Thank you to all of you. I really appreciated your opinions/advices. I'll give Context a try. I've already installed the minimal distribution (for MS Windows XP) from the Pragma site and printed the beginners' manual. At the beginning, I'm sure that I'll post some silly questions. Be patient please! I've another question. What is the best way to deal with a big document in Context, to save each chapter in a single file and at the end include them in a "main document", or is there a better way? Best regards, Alexandra
