Dithering (off-topic)

Good evening. I apologize to ask a little off-topic question, but I don't know where to ask (and it is closely related to TeX and PDF). I typeset a church bulleting. It is printed on a laserjet printer (600 dpi), and then copied on a copy machine. As for letters, all is right. But figures (photos) are this way spoiled. I guess it would help either to force PDF to print the figures in some very low resolution (150 dpi), or (probably better) to dither the figures and include them in PNG (instead of ordinary JPEG). Can some of you tell me how to do it? I tried ImageMagick's convert to dither the photos, but outcomes were really poor. Is there some good free software for this (in the best case in Linux)? Or can I do it some way in PDF? Many thanks for any hint. Michal Kvasnicka

inmargin text problems remain

Dear gang, Thanks Bill for your reply on my previous mail concerning struggles with the inmargin texts. As you can see I explicitely set the width of the margins. In order to make things easier to see I attach a minimal test file. Does anybody see the clue, how to tell Context to use the full marginwidth? Cheers Willi

Integrating Metapost

Hallo all, Running texexec on a ConTeXt-file with integrated METAPOST-Graphics METAPOST complains about: --------------------------- >>>> local_multi_par_area >>>> false ! Equation cannot be performed (numeric=boolean). <to be read again> ; l.218 local_multi_par_area:=false; ? --------------------------- and stops. There are no duplicate ConTeXt mp-files on this machine. The same file works on another Computer. What can the error be? Greetings Lutz

Kerning pairs for Optima-Italic

Hi, after I converted MacOSX's Optima.dfont for usage with TeX I experienced that this Adobe Optima (Regular, Italic, Bold, BoldItalic, ExtraBold) doesn't have extra kerning pairs. (And I don't have any idea how to create these on my own.) So I had a look at WalterSchmidt's page (home.vr-web.de/was/fonts.html), and fortunately he provides files for Regular and Bold - which work fine - but not Italic or BoldItalic fonts. So now I just have to find metric files (including kering pairs) for Adobe Optima-Italic and Optima-BoldItalic. Does anybody can help me with that? Thank you, Steffen.

Shutting down Acrobat Reader.

I am creating an e-book following the example program d-en-all.tex as found on the Context site. I have a question about the "exit" button. This button shuts down the current document but leaves Acrobat Reader still up and running. If the user is in full screen mode he has to do an <alt><esc> to get back to normal mode (from fullscreen) and then exit the Acrobat Reader using a menu. I am looking for a technique that would exit everythig when the user pushes the "exit" button. Interrupted framebox around text.

I want to set up several framed text passages in my document, where the title of the passage actually interrupts the top line of the box thus: -----My title------------------------------------------- | | | | | Blah blah. | |_________________________________ | I have seen such a configuration in books prepared using other software. configuration (texutil?) problem

Hi all! I had to change an operating system temporarly; now I use win98, but I haven't change ConTeXt installation and configuration at all. I'm not sure if win version causes the problem, but I can't see any other reasons... Anyway, the problem is that I can't build a list of contents. A sample zzz.tex file looks like this: \starttext \completecontent \chapter{Some chapter} \section{One section} \section{Another section} \chapter{And one more chapter} \section{And one more section} \stoptext After running such a code with command 'texexec --pdf zzz.tex'. At the end of job texexec says: run time : 4 seconds sorting and checking : running texutil total run time : 4 seconds There is no another run, the file is processed only ones. There is no 'zzz.tuo' in output. So I tried to test texutil running it directly with command 'texutil --references zzz.tui' (not sure if it is correct...). But the strangest thing is that texutil says: action : processing commands, lists and registers error : empty input file zzz.tui Of course zzz.tui is NOT empty. Does anybody know what may be responsible for that? TeXexec version: 2.8 TeXutil version: 7.3 THanks in advance, Pawe/l

I need a special headertext for the first page and a special footertext for the last page. With \firstpage and \lastpage I found no solution. Figure reuse

Dear Contexnicians, I believe that pdfs can make multiple use of pictures (and other objects). I have a fairly large picture which I want to include a number of times, once as the full picture and several other times concentrating on a portion of it. Are there any commands for cropping other than going through metapost? TIA -- Nigel

Hello out there, ... are not what I am going to announce here. But, you can -- if you are brave -- try out the new-on-the-www port of texshow, the ConTeXt command browser. As a bonus, comments can be added to the commands (as in etexshow), but since you are not alone on the www, you can share and enjoy! One day I will add a section for examples. You can then share your favorite examples with all the other ConTeXt users out there.
