Arithmetic Overflow error in MetaFun

Colleagues I'm having problems with an Arithmetic Overflow error when calculating the x and y values for functions of the form: y = ax^4 + bx^3 + cx^2 + dx + e to which I then add a bit of randomness and other embellishments. I have had a look in the Metafun and Metafont manuals but nothing jumps out at me. In the minimum working example below, this Arithmetic Overflow occurs when xord =13.5 but I can get the calculation to work if I separate out the equation and then add together, since it seems to be failing on the pow(xord,4) instruction. Is there a switch in MetaFont that should be set or a better way of getting round this Arithmetic Overflow error? Blank page added after pagecolumns

I am typesetting a document using pagecolumns to ensure that my footnotes are set ragged-bottom in columns. I have observed some unexpected behavior whenever the last column on a page is left incomplete: a blank page is added at the end of the document. A minimal working example follows: ``` \starttext \startpagecolumns[n=2] \dorecurse{3}{\par\input zapf} \stoppagecolumns \stoptext ``` I typeset this using ConTeXt version 2020.03.10, as released with TeXLive 2020. Notably, if \dorecurse{3} is changed to \dorecurse{2} or \dorecurse{6} (so that the text ends in the first column of a page), then there is no problem. I have tried to fix this by specifying page=no in the \startpagecolumns arguments, but it did not change anything. Is there something else I am missing? Thank you, Joey

\goto not working from within \textext()

This does give me ythe look of a link, but not a working link. Outside of textext() it works. Is there a way to get a working link in a MetaFun picture? --nodates not working

Dear list, the “LuaMeTaTeX Reference Manual” describes that the command line argument "--nodates" removes time dependent information in the output file. I’m afraid it doesn’t work. "\enabledirectives[backend.date=no]" doesn’t work either. This is really useful to be able to generate the exact PDF output (from a hashing point of view). Am I missing something or have I hit a bug? page number with brief centered line above

Hi list, I am trying to achieve a layout where there is a brief line above the bottom-centered page number (of a double-sided document). I am able to achieve the centered bottom-located page number easily and obviously enough with: \setuppagenumbering [alternative=doublesided,location={footer,middle}] \setupfooter [style=bold] And I was able to achieve a result with a short line above where the page number should be - but by adopting the solution below I have now lost the page number. \setuppagenumbering [alternative=doublesided,location={footer,middle}] \setupfootertexts[{\framed[frame=off,topframe=on,width=.5\textwidth]}] So then I thought that having left out any reference to page numbers I had better put it in, so I added [pagenumber] to the above, but I ended up with two page numbers, one centered, the other to the inner or outer margins (depending on recto/verso), and the line was likewise to the right or left of the centred number. So clearly not what I want. Maybe the solution lies with some combination of the above I haven't thought of, or maybe there is another solution altogether. Any thoughts? Julian

Using transparency in METAPOST within textext()

Is it possible to get a transparent background in a textext()? left protruding quotations

When I start a paragraph with a \quote or a \quotation the left quotemark does not protrude, but when I use Unicode quotes it does. I would prefer to use the commands. Any suggestions on how I can achieve proper left protrusion without resorting to Unicode characters? Cheers, Michael

Retrieving original value of enviroment variable HOME

Hello, before I run ConTeXt, I set a (new) variable "HOME" to point to a particular directory. ConTeXt changes its value during startup - it sets its value to %USERPROFILE% - I guess it is to unify environment somehow for all platforms ConTeXt supports; probably here: ---- data-ini.lua, ln. ~86 do local homedir = osgetenv(ostype == "windows" and 'USERPROFILE' or 'HOME') or '' if not homedir or homedir == "" then homedir = char(127) -- we need a value, later we wil trigger on it end homedir = file.collapsepath(homedir) ossetenv("HOME", homedir) -- can be used in unix cnf files <<<<<<<<<<<<<< HERE ossetenv("USERPROFILE",homedir) -- can be used in windows cnf files environment.homedir = homedir end ---- But anyway - would it be possible to store the original value of HOME environment variable (if set) before it gets changed during initialization - e.g. to a Lua table? - I would need to work with the original value in run-time (Win7 / WinX; ConTeXt MkIV). Is it possible to make xml.load a bit more 'verbose' when it encounters errors?

I am loading an xml.file. I sometimes make mistakes editing that file and then xml.load creates a string that contains <error>invalid xml file - parsed text</error> At that point I check my file and sometimes (like now) I cannot find the error. Is there a way to make xml.load somewhat more verbose about where it encounters the error? G

complete cover example

Am wondering if anybody has a complete example (explained below) of a book cover: front, spine and back. It doesn't matter how simple or complicated the example. Am one of those people who, once he sees an example, can generally work out the necessary adaptations. By a complete example I mean the kind of thing found here Creating a style file in ConTeXt | Random Determinism <https://randomdeterminism.wordpress.com/2009/10/21/creating-a-style-file-in…> where the writer explains things bit by bit but importantly, offers a summary of the code at the end. I probably don't need the lengthy explanation but the summary of code is most helpful - except that it is not about a book cover:-) As a relative newcomer to ConTeXt, I have found complete examples of something I want/need to do very useful. Of course, many such are on the wiki, but from time to time I need something else, and right at the moment I need a bit of guidance for a book cover, and an example might help. Julian
