How could a typesetting system be today?

Hi, Just because I'm curious: how could a typesetting system like TeX be if it was created today? I've tried google and wikipedia, and all I found different from TeX is a system called 'Lout', but it seems dead. Does anyone knows about novel or interesting ideas that could be used if we would write a new typesetting system from scratch? Thanks for your thoughts, Maurício

Roll-Your-Own Stand-Alone (Was re. ConTeXt ultraminimals)

I'm working on ConTeXt+SciTE-on-a-USB-Stick. A downloadable program is still far off, as is a version that can be put on PortableApps.com, but I've gotten to the point of mapping out the basic parameters: • We need to have a start-up program, which will set up the environment and start SciTE and/or a command prompt. • Legacy-free is nice, but if ConTeXt+XeTeX (which I'll call "mkiii" whether that's an official name or no) requires texexec then we need to include Ruby anyway, so we may as well keep PDFTeX (mkii), BUT: • Since my Windows machine already has Perl, Python, & Ruby, I'm going to defer working on that last point. • In fact, I'm going to defer including SciTE also, until I have a working stand-alone ConTeXt… I've put my rsync invocations on the wiki. (Since the calls are so closely tied to the directory structure of the Minimals, I added them to <http://wiki.contextgarden.net/ConTeXt_Minimals/Structure> as an example of how to use & customize them, but I'll move it if folks think it belongs elsewhere.) Also, the commands I'm using to generate my formats are on that page. Could someone please check them for sanity? --Joel

Format does not match the base files

(scientific) poster

Hi, I have googled, looked in the pragma site etc for a template (style) of an a0 poster. Doing this with latex is a bit of a nightmare and the result is not very appealing. I am looking for something in the size of a0 with embedded boxes with plots, equations etc. If such a file existed and was to be found somewhere I'd be grateful if you gave me a link. thanks

Hi All ConTeXt lovers! I am studying physics at Örebro University in Sweden and often produce documents report from experiments. For Me it naturally fells in to use Context typesetting together with tools like octave and Gnuplot. The issue until now, has been when you need to transer data from octave output textfiles to a representable table in a context document. Hardwriting all \NC and \HL stuff together with cut and paste method is time consuming. But thanks to Hans, Wolfgang, Taco and Mojca I successfully manage to import experiment values from a textfile (that also Gnuplot can read and do graphic) to a nice table with caption so you can refer to it in the textflow. So I decided to contribute my successfull result in attached examplefiles. Thanks and all wishes! Jan-Erik Hägglöf

The workaround is to pass the platform name to first-setup.sh: ./first-setup.sh --platform=freebsd But near the end of the installation process, MtxRun fails to execute the binaries because it tries to find them in tex/texmf-generic. At this stage, I have used the source command to setup the environment and executed texexec --make --all to finish up the installation. So good so far, it seems to work, but I have no idea what's happening there. Bye, Dominique

context command and the bbl file

Hi all, I have a file with citations. Using: "context myfile" does not create the bbl file when needed (but reads it when it exists). "texexec --lua myfile" does the expected job. Is there a reason for that? -- Jean
