Installing Context Minimals on Windows

Hi, I normally use linux, but I now need to install context on Windows (7). Right now the minimals installation fails for me in various ways, depending on how I do it. Running the graphical installer I get two dialogs "update failed error code 1" and "make failed error code 1". Using the command line method I get a message about a vtable error when I try to run context. (It looked like the one mentioned in earlier postings, sorry I don't have the exact message now). I want just MKIV + extras (and intend to try TexWorks). Any hints appreciated. Thanks, -- John Devereux

Best version of ConTeXt

What would be the best version of ConTeXt to recommend to a friend who writes novels on a PC running Windows? The person has no programming skills. He would probably require some assistance installing Tex-Live or whatever and would need a stable version because he couldn't manage frequent updates. writetolist causes mystery blank

Hi all, I'm having a but of a problem using writetolist. In principle, I want to insert something into the table of contents, but I don't want to disturb the flow of the text. Unfortunately, the following code seems to generate a blank at the top of the page: \showframe \showmakeup \starttext \writetolist[section]{}{}% \framed{This box has been pushed down} \stoptext I've also tried using a section command where the output has been set to empty: \showframe \showmakeup \setuphead[section][ before=, after=, command=\mydonothing] \def\mydonothing#1#2{} \starttext \section{}% \framed{This box has been pushed down} \stoptext but that also gets me a blank. Incidentally, the same thing happens with writebetweenlist, (except that this seems to sometimes push content onto a new page for some reason). Any ideas? -- Michael Murphy

This is totally off-topic: but given the fairly strong Dutch implication in creating ConTeXt, it may not be surprising that traffic on the mailing list has slowed-down recently. Not to ruffle the feathers of everyone else on the mailing list, either... Alan

context vs texinfo

Hi, I was using context and I had to wait for 16 seconds for one run approximately. I switched to texinfo and it barely takes 2 seconds. Can you please explain the diffrence? I know context is complex but still? -- Best regards, Shiv Shankar Dayal

\definecolumnsethsize

I'm using columnsets for a paper with 2 columns and copied an examples from the wiki and the columnsets documentation to give the following commands: \definecolumnset[colset][n=2] \setupcolumnset[colset][2][distance=5mm] \definecolumnsethsize{colset}{1}{1}\One \definecolumnsethsize{colset}{1}{2}\Two ... \placefigure[btlr][fig:ex1]{caption1}{\externalfigure[example1][width=\One]} % One column figure \placefigure[btlr][fig:ex2]{caption1}{\externalfigure[example2][width=\Two]} % Two column figure The figures appear okay, but they are quite a bit smaller than the textwidth of the columns. Can someone explain the workings of \definecolumnsethsize? I've looked at the code and it means nothing to me! The columnsets document only gives examples, no definition. A problem with combining characters

Newbie: floats with Context 2009 (Ubuntu). How do I use this workaround?

Hello, I am completely new to Context. Fwd: Problem with ConTeXt minimal

Dear ConTeXt experts, I followed the steps in: http://wiki.contextgarden.net/ConTeXt_Minimals to install to the conTeXt minimals. After completing the installation and when I run "texexec.exe" I get the following error: mtxrun:9289: attempt to concatenate local 'v' (a table value) What is the problem? and how to solve it?
