Canonical way to escape the square brackets?

Dear list, I swear I searched the internet, but I guess the terms are too generic. The question is: is there a safe way to escape the square brackets, preventing them to be eaten by the previous command? For example: \item [this should be in brackets] My solution is: \define\leftsquarebracket{[} \define\rightsquarebracket{]} \item \leftsquarebracket this should be in brackets\rightsquarebracket I'm pretty sure there is already a built-in command for them, so I'm asking the list. Scaling of math glyphs

Hi, In my opinion, the size of the \sum in Cambria in display style is too large. I know that this is a design decision on part of Cambria designers, but I am wondering if I can scale the glyph down. I made a local copy of cambria-math.lfg and changed FixDisplayOperatorMinHeight to local function FixDisplayOperatorMinHeight(value,target,original) table.print(target) local o = original.mathparameters.DisplayOperatorMinHeight if o < 2240 then return 2240.0 * target.parameters.factor else return 0.8 * value -- already scaled end end This works, but as expected, it scales down both \sum and \int. Stretch option for fonts doesn’t work

Gnuplot and the dollar sign

Hi! I'm having trouble while trying to make the following work: \usemodule[gnuplot] \startGNUPLOTscript[distr_simple_1] plot "2_simple_1.out" using (0.01*floor($1/0.01)):(0.870456/100000/0.01) smooth frequency with boxes, (cos(2*x)*sin(0.5*x) + 1)*exp(-0.4*x) \stopGNUPLOTscript \useGNUPLOTgraphic[distr_simple_1] The problem seems to be that the single dollar sign gets interpreted as the start of a math environment. I tried to look through the source code to see how I could tell context to bypass checking for certain characters, but I couldn't figure it out. Thanks for any hints! Janne Junnila

Hi List, I am trying to program with Lua but there are concepts I must not understand, and the documentation is somewhat lacking. The only useful thing I could use is Hans' manual, thanks to him. If someone could help me just understanding the concept I must me missing in this simple example I would appreciate it. So here it is. Running the following code, variable "a" should not be modified by my function, and stay (1,2), but it does get modified and becomes (4,2) like the new variable "b" I am creating. xtables: stretch a single column

Hi, xtables offers option=stretch to stretch the whole table evenly. Is there also a way (without manually calculating the width) to stretch the whole table using a given column? Short use case: I have a table with three columns. Column 1 has an external figure, column 3 a variable length (but still short) text/string and column 2 has either no text at all or maybe a longer phrase. Columns 1 and 3 should be auto-sized (i.e as small as possible) while column 2 should be as width as necessary, to make the whole table fit perfectly onto the page (width-wise; height doesn't matter for now). I think with natural tables it was possible to set width=broad for a certain column. Is something like that possible with xtables as well? Thanks! -- Best Regards, Andreas

The bug with the scale of fallback fonts

Hi, See this example about Chinese fonts as fallback fonts. The Latin font's scale rate is less than the fallback font from \tf to \tfd. "overscored" or "overlined" text … (or whatever it should be called)

Dear all, I am trying to reproduce with ConTeXt an old french text that contains numerous abbreviations, mostly of two types: - words cut off by means of a "period", with the last letter of the complete word as a superscript above the period. - "overscores" --either for single characters, for instance in words with double consonances, like "comme". One of these is sometimes omitted and replaced by an "overscore" on the previous vowel -- or on an entire abbreviation, such as "coe" for "comme" and "nre" for "notre"; they become coe and nre overscored. Now I would like to reproduce these as closely as possible. For the "period + superscript letter" I found a solution: \lohi[]{\cdot}{t} (for superscript t), nearly perfect. The only imperfection I can see is that the dot sits slightly below the baseline. Is there a way to get it on the baseline? The overscore on a single character presents no problem. For an overscore on a complete word I have not found a solution. Three individual overscores on a three-letter word give a broken line; I do not know how to merge the three line components. (Incidentally, this hack does not work with mkiv) The other solution I have tried is to put the word in a frame with a top-frame only. But this way the word (abbreviation) hangs underneath the base-line. Using \inframed instead of \framed makes no difference. There appears not to be something like \setupinframed. Hi everyone, This minimal example causes my luatex process to spin consuming 100 percent cpu (latest minimals, freebsd 9): \setupbackend[export=yes] \starttext hello world \stoptext To rule out any issue with FreeBSD 9, which is fairly recent, I compiled my own luatex binary from the svn trunk but still experienced the problem. Adding \startparagraph and \stopparagraph also produced the same result, but with slightly different output after interrupting the compilation process. I've read this list for years but rarely post and would like to thank everyone who contributes to this amazing project.
