Automatic selection of font shape depending on size

Dear All! Is there in ConTeXt an equivalent of LaTeX2e automatic selection of font shape depending on font size? For example, the following LaTeX statement (from type1ec.sty): \DeclareFontShape{OT1}{cmr}{m}{n}{ <-6> cmr5 <6-7> cmr6 <7-8> cmr7 <8-9> cmr8 <9-10> cmr9 <10-12> cmr10 <12-17> cmr12 <17-> cmr17 }{} means: for cmr family in OT1 encoding (series=medium, shape=normal) LaTeX will use: for font sizes < 6pt use (scaled) external font cmr5 for font sizes >= 6pt and < 7pt, use (scaled) external font cmr6 for font sizes >= 7pt and < 8pt, use (scaled) external font cmr7 . . . for font sizes >= 12pt and < 17pt, use (scaled) external font cmr12 for font sizes >= 17pt, use (scaled) external font cmr17). For example, if 5,5 pt font size of cmr font family in OT1 encoding (series=medium, shape=normal) is needed for typing text or math, LaTeX will automatically use external font cmr5 (cmr5.tfm), scaled to 5,5pt design size. Footonotes and footnote references not appearing on the same page

Hello, I have a problem with footnotes: the references and the footnotes do not fall on the same page as soon as there is numerous footnotes on a page (something that happens frequently in my work). interactive links with keyboard control

Hi again, are there commands to control interaction via the keyboard? I have a field stack which can now be switched by clicking on a link, but I want to couple it to an event like, say 'key F1 pressed'. I have no idea how this could be done, so if there is no solution yet, I am grateful for hints where to start. In fact, when everything's finished, I would like to be able to control a presentation using a IR remote control via LIRC, and sending keypress events should be quite simple. Better solutions are welcome, it's just a raw idea at the moment. Btw, I'm asking many questions at present, but I promise to be modest again from next Tuesday on... Eckhart

m-chart: bug? and questions

I'm using dummy flow cells to have both solid and dashed connections originating from the same cell in a chart. I have noticed that having several nodes with no \name{...} defined confuses the chart macros: all connections refer to the same node. Giving arbitrary names to the dummy nodes solves the problem. Then two questions: (1) I couldn't find any setup parameters to manipulate the default font chosen for the the cells. It is by far too small (I'm preparing a screen presentation). (2) Is the option for half-grid steps requested by GB some time ago available? If so, how to use it? Eckhart

MPinclusions for drawing commands

In the following test file \setupcolors[state=start] \startMPinclusions drawoptions(withcolor \MPcolor{darkyellow}); \stopMPinclusions \startreusableMPgraphic{test} fill fullcircle scaled 1cm; \stopreusableMPgraphic \starttext \reuseMPgraphic{test} \stoptext I was hoping for a yellow circle, but it didn't work. I guess drawoptions are reset by beginfig? Is there a possibility to insert MP code for every figure in a document *after* every beginfig? Or how else could I set common drawoptions for all figures? Hi everybody, I just started with context and I was wondering: Is it possible to set timings into a context presentation so that we end up with an automatic slideshow? As far as I could see PDF allows this as one can do it with Acrobat Writer, and perhaps this is something obvious but I could not find any reference to it in the manuals. I tried to do with a little Javascript but my rudimentary knowledge of both Javascript and context prevented the achievement of any result. Best regards, Luís Neves P.S. Typesetting Russian -- lost kerning

LaTeX is still not so bad, this thing is implemented much more neatly there." I installed the modified russification on MiKTeX 2.2 without any problem. \dots again

Ahoi Hans! While checking a book after installing the latest beta I recognized again that \dots{} does the wrong. The stops are taken from the *math* font, and that looks very ugly if there's no fitting math font for some text where I don't need any maths. (My text ist in ITC Berkeley, that has very tiny punctuations; CM or TX have rather fat dots.) I'd suggest to take the stops simply from the active text font -- or use the ellipsis character if the font has one. On the subject of spacing: The dots are too wide spread; Acrobat shows 1000 units, I'd suggest about 750 -- and about 500 before the first dot. ConTeXt FAQ -- next generation?

Ahoi eXperts! I'd like to start another attempt for a ConTeXt-FAQ-o-matic. I'm too busy and too less able to do the whole work myself, so I'd be glad if the appropriate experts would take their part. We need... 1. a definition (Schema?) for the XML source 2. conversion patterns for ConTeXt (environment) and XHTML (XSLT?) 3. a web surface (with search engine, web edit form etc.) 4. last not least lots of entries I'd try to coordinate the whole project, will host the site, could care for 3 and help with the other, but first someone must take responsibility for 1 and 2. Any volunteers? Some requirements of the definition (1): - one XML file can contain all entries - an other file will contain redundant information like authors - each entry may contain several languages (I'd like to keep the door open for partly translations; I imagine that a web user sees his favourite language if available) - entry IDs must be in some way, that user contributions (files with several entries or corrections) can join in. - markup possibilities like WikiWeb (emphasis, enumeration, easy table, link) - proper code markup (e.g. for TeX, ConTeXt, shell, perl code) - additional (normally invisible) keywords for search engine (web) or index (TeX) - some flexible subject/subsubject structure - some versioning (also like WikiWeb: each user may change every entry, but an admin must be able to undo it) - someone suggested to use a DocBook subset; don't know if that's possible Requirement of the conversion (2): - easily adaptable to a new layout (web or print) - additional software must be open source and run on Debian Linux (SPARC) (web server) and MacOS X (my machine) Is anything of the above impossible? Underlining URLs

Hello ConTeXt users out there, I'd like to underline a hyperlink to an url (with \goto), so that it is visible while reading with the acrobat reader but not visible when printed. The default appearance is boldface. There are a lot of examples of these kind of hyperlinks out there. For example the xml spec (iirc the url is http://www.w3.org/TR/2000/REC-xml-20001006.pdf) Does anybody know how to accomplish this? Patrick

frame madness

Hi Hans, I got a strange result with framing, where changing the framecolor changes the alignment of the framed block on the line. Isn't this a strange effect? no colors in pdf-output

Hi all, if I put \setupoutput[pdf] \setupcolors[state=start] \setupcolor[rgb] \starttext \color[red]{asdf} \stoptext I get the text in the pdf-file without any color. I am trying to setup a number of small pages (A8 size) to print on one letter size page, and I have been unable to determine how to accomplish my aim of seeing/printing crop marks, but not seeing/printing page numbers. I can't find the answer in the manuals, and I have failed in my attempts to manipulate \setuplayout and \setuppagenumbering successfully. Maybe someone can point the way to the solution... Simple? PDF question

I wonder if it's possible with PDFTex to obtain effect of document scrolling on every mouse click. I often find such mode in commercial documentation and it's really convenient. When it's enabled in PDF, the cursor changes into a hand with black arrow pointing downwards. I tried the PDFspec as well as the Acrobat JS guide, but cannot find anything similar. ConTeXt and spell checkers?

(Happy New Year 2003!) What are my options when I want to spell check my ConTeXt file? I only need American English (or "technical English" or "computer English") and the main idea is to check that I really use the American spelling for all words. I'm mainly using WindowsNT+GNUEmacs (from the TeXLive CD)+TeXLive 7, I also have access to the combination WinNT+WinEdt+TeXLive, but I prefer Emacs. I cannot be creative when writing scripts (=no programming skills), but I can follow a pattern for example when adding things to my .emacs file. And I will be installing all the systems with the English spell checker, so easy installation is not necessary as long as the instructions actually work. If there are free or cheap programs that spellcheck postscript or pdf files, that would work as well - i.e. I just need to check my file at *some* stage of the project, before it is finalized and copied. Release naming

I suggest to name releases differently: currently the most recent release is named cont-tfm.zip. Since I plan to make a NetBSD package for ConTeXt, I would very much like to have some release information in the name of the .zip-file: the release date or some other release numbers would be fine. This would also make it much more convenient to automatically check whether an installed version is the most recent version. Marko

Interaction used in FLOWchart which is typeset with the \placefigure mechanism

Hi Hans, I got a couple of FLOWcharts, which are typeset with the \placefigure mechanism. The charts as such come out nicely as expected. However the charts also contain links to other parts of the document (\goto{text}[ref.]). - After placement of the charts there are still interactive spots, but these hot spots do not correspond with the text they belong to. Is it that I ask the impossible i.e. that there can't be interaction once the \placefigure mechanism is used or is there a similar problem as with the \placeformula (beforeyesterdays thread)? Hello, Berend de Boer, irc.freenode.net sounds good. Being able to "register" the channel is also a bonus. Last I checked (10:48 AM at -7 GMT time), the channel #context has _not_ been registered yet. :-) My main concern (and thus my hesistation), is whether it would be a violation of trademark to use "context" as the channel name. Perhaps we should use something like "context-unofficial" other suggestions/opinions? Or am I just being paranoid here since it's just a channel name, and it's running on a non-profit server. interactive content in header

Dear ConTeXt users, I'd like to have an interactive table of content in the header (at least somewhere at the top of the page). It should have the current section highlighted. First I have defined an overlay and used it with \setupbackgrounds: \defineoverlay[toc][{\coloredcontent}] \setupbackgrounds[header][text][background=toc,frame=on,state=repeat] But the \coloredcontent behaves weired. \def\coloredcontent{A\par BB} gets typeset as ABB, \currentheadnumber always displays the same number (even with \determineheadnumber[section] before \getcurrentheadnumber) and \placecontent is completely ignored. It should look like this: -------------- section1 | section 2 | section 3 section 4 ------------- ---------------------------- the current page holds some paragraphs of section 2. Now you click on "section 4" and the display changes to: ------------- section1 section 2 section 3 | section 4 | ---------------------------------------- -- I hope it is clear what I'd like to get. What DTD for a thesis

The main point is good output, but I want to be able to convert this document to e.g. HTML without too much hessle. Hello, In the roadmap file (http://www.pragma-ade.com/roadmap.pdf) on page 6 ('How things relate' section) there's a figure showing that ConTeXt could exchange data with sql databases. I would like to know the details (e.g. I'm interested in importing data from MySQL databases), but didn't find anything relevant in manuals (cont-eni.pdf and ms-cb-en.pdf). suppressing hyphenation

Hi all, Sorry if this has been covered before, but does anyone know a ConTeXt-y (i.e., elegant) way of suppressing hyphenation for a block of text? I'm dealing with long chapter headings, and I would rather set them ragged and without hyphenation. I've made tentative experiments with the techniques described here, but to no avail. I tried making a new language [zz] that grabs the zerohyph.tex hyphenation file. TeX complains about seeing a \pattern outside of initex, but it did have the effect of eliminating all hyphenation in my document, which was a bit more than I bargained for. Has anyone done this successfully? No? Should I continue trying the language? Installation-problems

Hallo! I wanted to test the examples in 'metafun' from Hans Hagen: The first Example, just metapost ('red circle'), was translated in a PostScript-File. I viewed the output with bmv and got a blue quarter circle at the left lower origin. I viewed it then with gv and got a centered grey circle. The files rgb values are ok: 1,0,0 The second Example, with context, dosn't work. texexec couldn't find texexec.ini. I couldn't neither find texexec.ini nor texexec.rme, so I decided to install a new version of context. I unzipped cont-tmf.zip in /usr/share/texmf/ I missed the afm file for the included type1-font! I renamed texexec.rme to texexec.ini and edited the following two lines: -------------------------------------------------------------------------- set UsedInterfaces to de en nl metafun mptopdf set UserInterface to de --------------------------------------------------------------------------- then I renamed cont-usr.ori and cont-sys.ori to cont-usr.tex resp. cont-sys.tex texexec --make nl en de worked, but cont-de.efmt is copied to web2c cont-en.efmt and cont-nl.efmt is copied to /context/config (don't know if this was ok?) texexec --make metafun doesn't work (couldn't find cont-metafun) There is an other interface in UsedInterfaces in texexec.ini 'mptopdf' Should I make a formatfile for this too? There is an other way to make the formates with texconfig. Is that an alternativ way? So the format file was generated; however, 'texexec filename.tex' results in 'sh: cont-en: command not found' error message. What should I do to solve this problem? Thanks in advance. Placeformula environment

Hi Hans, At this moment I am dealing with some chemical formulae. I ought to place them always in such a way that the may use the width of the textarea independent of the fact that the \placeformula may occur within an itemisation. - How to do this? Some of the formulae are broader than the paper-width. So I tried to place the formulae in buffers, which are put into place with \placefigure[left][fig:DEZ1]{none}{\externalfigure[DEZ1][type=buffer,width=\ textwidth]}. There arise two questions: 1. It looks like that the sizing mechanism does not quite what I expect, because the formulae still stick out into the margin? 2. Independently from the way the \placefigure mechanisme is used, there is a problem with the following paragraph? Could you please have a look into this matter. See attached file Groet Willi

I found it matched with Charter really well, and after that, found that other people on the net seem to agree with me. I had followed up this email with the attached minimal test. It doesn't give the glyphs I expect. I've tried all sorts of combinations to try to trigger the math symbols in math-eul, but I don't get any closer than this. Long section headings in footertexts

Hi all, I have a user who likes to have long \chapter titles, like {This is my title: with a whole lot of specific clarification}. When we set footertexts to be [chapter], it collides into the opposite footer (date, in this case). What I'd like to do is have some way of picking up the first part of the chapter title ("This is my title") and put only that into the footer text. I would call this a "subtitle" in a way. As I mentioned I forgot one headtext in lang-ger.tex. \setupheadtext [\s!sv] [\v!inhoud=Inneh\aring l] should have one more l, that is: \setupheadtext [\s!sv] [\v!inhoud=Inneh\aring ll] I also read in lang-ger.tex that there are some \definesortkey's for the norwegian language. I don't know why they are commented out (obsolete?). I tried to uncomment them and make a register that contains these additional letters (\aa,\ae,\o) but they still end up before A in the index. Good morning. Some time ago I've uploaded and installed new ConTeXt (ConTeXt ver: 2002.10.23 fmt: 2002.12.4 int: english mes: english). With it my XHTML documents cannot be processed (it worked with some older version). Now I obtain this very error message: ! Missing \endcsname inserted. <to be read again> \def \parseXMLelement #1#2 #3>->\def \currentXMLarguments {#3}\if #1/\chardef \ki... l.2 <HTML> What's wrong? Hi: Does anyone know of an alternative to Xpdf or Acrobat for Linux? Xpdf seems really slow and the fonts look bad, and Acrobat under Linux is just not as good as it is under Windows. Best wishes, Matt
