Dear gang: I am typesetting a journal this week, including Arabic, and of course I'm running into problems. I'm separating these into individual mails. Some of the problems are related to the e-TeX extensions, but my present project can't wait for the e-Omega project to be completed (3 cheers to Giuseppe!) so I hope Hans will be willing to help me fix these. Some of you have much more experience typesetting journals; in what follows please feel free to suggest better ways of doing things. Thnx in advance Idris

Chinese Number Problem

I am trying to set up ConTeXt to work properly with Chinese. Everything seemed fine until I discovered that there is some problem with the Chinese numbers. I have a TeX file with several chapters. I used texexec and dvipdfmx generated the PDF file without problems. But I found there are two things wrong (which supposed to be working). The first is that the two Chinese charaters before the list of contents (corresponding to the 'Contents' before English text) are missing. The second, all the chinese characters before the chapter titles in the list of contents are missing (corresponding to the English text 1 or 1.1, etc.). I tried to figure out what the problem is. I read file font-chi.tex and found some commands like: \def\chinesedigit#1#2% #2: suffix, here * or \empty {\udigit{\chineseencoding}{\number#1#2}} \def\normalchinesenumber#1% {\expandafter\dochinesenumber\number#1\relax\empty} I tried to use these commands in my file directly. But they didn't produce any output there, even no space left for the numbers inside {}. I am using MikTeX under Windows XP. I used the latest ConTeXt beta to get the dvipdfmx working. Your help will be appreciated greatly! Guo

Customizing texutil --purge

I know I saw the answer to my question on the list couple of weeks back, but I seem to have lost it and search in the mailing list archives on the word "purge" gives very odd answers... The "Texutil explained" says on page 2 "texutil purge Afterwards, TEXutil reports the number of bytes regained. Optionally, you can pass a file pattern, thereby limiting the cleansing." As I'm a dummy, I don't seem to be able to put this in practice. I would like to get rid of the *.tuo files (and some others as well), so I tried texutil --purge *.tuo texutil --purge .tuo texutil --purge tuo but none of these have any effect whatsoever. So, how do I "pass a file pattern" so that texutil understands that I want to get rid of files called something.tuo? Greetings, Mari from snowy Finland

Cross referencing not working?

In December Giuseppe Bilotta reported that cross referencing had disappeared. Then it came back (at least until two weeks ago...) and again it has somehow disappeared, or it has a weird behavoir (from version: ConTeXt ver: 2003.1.31 fmt: 2003.2.4 int: english mes: english) Below is an example: if I put the "formula 1" before "formula 2" nothing gets numbered. However the other way around "formula 1" gets numbered but not "formula 2", nor "formula 3". Any comment is welcomed. I am slowly making progress on this font installation (well, it works with LaTeX, not yet with ConTeXt). However, could I do something like this with a ConTeXt typescript? \DeclareFontShape{T1}{minion}{m}{n}{ <-6> MinionPro-SemiboldCapt-8t <6-9> MinionPro-Capt-8t <9-12> MinionPro-Regular-8t <12-15> MinionPro-Subh-8t <15-> MinionPro-Disp-8t}{\romanprotruding} This is from the LaTeX fd file, and what is useful is that it automatically switches optical size (caption, regular, subhead, and display) based on the size of the font. Hi m-bib users, I might have overlooked this, but how can I insert "arbitrary" text inside a \cite[]? I want to put page numbers inside the occasional citation (for verbatim quotations). I currently cite in authoryears format (Hoekwater, 1999), but for some citations would like to insert text of the form (Hoekwater, 1999, pp. 5--9). Can it be done? What have I ignored? Hi Adam, Hi Hans, Following the last week's discussions, and Hans' suggestion, I prepared two example files named math-knuth.tex math-stein.tex for testing math characters and text. They can be found at http://homepage.mac.com/otared/FileSharing3.html If you think you need more of such files please let me know. Also if I can suggest something, I didn't find a command "\showmathfunctions" like "\showmathcharacters", the one which shows all the predefined characters used in typesetting mathematics. Pagenumbers

Hi all, I have a large document with different chapters. At each chapter the pagenumbering is reset. (\setuppagenumgering[way=bychapter]) Now I would like to display also the total number of pages of each chapter e.g. Page 5 of 9. Is there a simple way to have Context to calculate these 'subtotals'? I tried to use \totalnumberofpages, but then I get the total number of pages of the whole document, which is not influenced by setting up the pagenumbering [bychapter] Willi

(Those files are regi-il5.tex and enco-il5.tex.) With regi-il5.tex I am able to type accented characters without any problems, if you disregard hyphenation. When hyphenation is taken into account, I am completely lost. Not that the words with accented characters are completely unhyphenated, but only some of them are. I am attaching my regi-il5.tex and a test file (and its DVI form, to save you from tinkering with your setup just to see the problems I describe below). Please note that I have tried many variations of both the macro I call (such as \definecharacter, etc.), and the way I type the substituted accents (\c c vs. \ccedilla). Here are the problems: - Even though the hyphenation for a\u{g}ra is correct, I cannot redefine it using ð (\u{g} in Latin5 encoding). I can redefine it using \u{g}, but then I lose all of its hyphenation. - Words which have one of \i (dotless i) or \.I characters are not hyphenated at all. This is most problematic in the second column of the sample text. - Some of the hyphenations are wrong. For example da-\u{g}-lar, it should be da\u{g}-lar. Similarly ta-\c{s}-lar should be ta\c{s}-lar. Also \c{c}o-rap\c{c}\i should have an hyphen before the second ccedilla (though I have an intuition that it is due to the right syllable being short, can it be?). I am also attaching a similar file for LaTeX (again, with related DVI output). Please notice how words containing dotless i characters are correctly hyphenated. Since ConTeXt and LaTeX share the same hyphenation patterns, I cannot see why they are generating different outputs. From texexec's output: language : patterns 2:2-tr-2 3:2-tr-2 4:2-en-2 5:2-uk-2 6:2-de-2 2-fr-2 9:2-it-2 2-nl-2 loaded Possible clash with hyphenation pattern files? Or do I have to explicitly state that I want tr hyphenation in my test file? (tr is the default language.) What can be the source of my problems? I am willing to provide you any information regarding my TeX/ConTeXt/LaTeX setup you may need. Once I have all going, I will send everything to Hans Hagen to be included in the future ConTeXt releases. By the way, I am a total newbie with TeX. Hi! Is there any reference manual for doing presentations with context? I only got art-pres.pdf but it doesn't give many details. What is the purpose of \presentationstep? missing Dstroke & dstroke

I'm slowly getting into using DocBookInContext module for producing PDF output out of DocBook sources. One problem which I encountered is that I cannot get proper characters for two Croatian national letters: Dstroke & dstroke which are rendered as "D" & "d" and I see in mfonts.pdf (Fonts in ConTeXt) manual on p. 22nd that these chars are also not properly rendered. Is it some missing feature in ConTeXt since I remember that similar thing was present with LaTeX and it required some special *.sty file since those two characters cannot be handled like the rest of TeX accents? typescripts and environments

A familiar issue, but I'm still a bit confused about how to set up a proper typescript, and how to access it in a document. Can someone please look at the enclosed? What I don't understand is how to name these files and typescripts, where to put them, and how to access them in a document. This is the beginnings of a typescript to handle some OpenType fonts which have been converted to type 1. What I will want to be able to do is to say: base font = minionpro-osf footnote text font = minionpro-caption-osf title font = minionpro-display-osf section heading font = minionpro-subhead-osf Am I on the right track with the enclosed file? The environment file is at the bottom, but I'm not sure how to access it correctly. I've tried \environment[minionpro-osf], but it doesn't seem to work (though there might be other reasons I'm getting Computer Modern!). Thanks, Bruce

I have downloaded most (all?) of the Context manuals. Meanwhile the development of the system continues at a rapid pace. As in most programming efforts the documentation is left to later. There is a possibliity that some of the manuals may have been updated without a general notice to that effect. fixedspaces sometimes flawed

Hi Hans, In the manual it is claimed for the command \fixedspaces that (4.6 Word spacing) "After this command the ~ (tilde) generates a tight space with the width of a number." Bug in \setupinteraction?

Hello, after a couple of hours of debugging I found out why I couldn't anymore set my PDF to maintain the zoom level; apparently, the command \dosetuppageview{standard} command was ignored/overruled. So because I now again have something to write and with this use ConTeXt again, I went to http://www.pragma-ade.com/ to get the newest version. The downloading page says it's from today, but the file that is linked here is from August 2002. The right file seems to be in the beta/-folder. Hello, everybody! My fight with the fonts continues, I think I managed to debug most of my problems. However, I found out that my TeXLive installation seems to lack some of the very basic postscript font files (i.e they do not exist on my computer) and thus I still cannot install all the fonts mentioned in the type-tmf.bat file (of which I now have a version that really works with latest TeXLive+Windows, if somebody is interested). The TeXfont manual says (p. 4, under "Generating metrics") "Installation here comes down to copying the afm and pfb files, as well as generating the tfm and vf files." This sentence leads me to believe that I cannot generate the missing pfb files myself out of something else, so where can I find them? I lack the following: urw/helvetic: uhvb8an.pfb, uhvbi8a.pfb, uhvr8an.pfb, uhvri8a.pfb, uhvri8an.pfb (No wonder Helvetica has been giving me gray hairs all the way through!) bit/charter (NOT bitstrea/charter on TeXLive): bchb8a.pfb, bchbi8a.pfb, bchr8a.pfb, bchri8a.pfb urw/bookman: ubkb8a.pfb, ubkbi8a.pfb, ubkr8a.pfb, ubkri8a.pfb I seem to have all the .afm files for these fonts, just the .pfb:s are totally missing - any ideas of where I could get them and how? For the record: the combination I use just now is WinXP+TeXLive 7+(newest) ConTeXt, but I think the problem originates from TeXLive 7 full installation and is not system dependent. PDF problem in newest context

Hello! I'd messed up with my computer so I removed my old ConTeXt and installed the newest zip file instead (January 26 version). Unfortunately it declines to make pdf files, not even out of the example files from the web page. Tabulate and placing of chemical formulae

Hi Hans, Please find enclosed a file demonstrating some problems concerning: 1. chemical structures placed in a buffer which is typeset with the \placefigure environment. The chemical structure is not rezised. The running text starts far to the right at the same height as the figure starts. 2. a small tabulate which is intended to start with a \HL. \HL typeset before the first row of \NC ... \NC\NR, causes a fatal error with \noalign Could you please have a look at this? How to do math in ConTeXt?

Hi everyone! I appologise if this question is answered before. I was trying to do some math in ConTeXt today, but failed. What I wanted to do was something similar to the \begin{cases}\end{cases} thing in LaTeX (amsmath?). For the non-LaTeX-math-users, its something like this: f(x)= \begin{cases} 0 & \text{if}\ x<0\\ 1 & \text{if}\ x\geq 0 \end{cases} and one gets something like this: / 0 if x<0 f(x) = < \ 1 if x>=0 I didn't find any commands that did this so I searched alittle in the maillist archive and didn't find any solution to it. Are the amsmath commands available in one or another way or are the implemented somehow? I found newmat and m-math but I didn't find a solution in either of them. Are there any docs about how to type math in ConTeXt? I am also interested in things that looks like eqnarray and other environments in LaTeX's amsmath... Thanks in advance, Micke P

Footnote numbering

Hi, is there a possibility to restart the numbering of footnotes? (i.e. i, ii, iii,... in the front matter, and then 1,2,3... in the body). I could switch to the roman numerals quite easily but I could not manage to let the new numbering start at 1. I also tried to use parts for that, which just led to funny page numbers but did not have any influence on the footnote numbering at all. Perhaps somebody knows a simple solution? problem with tabulate environment

texutil purge

Hi Hans, Recently I became aware of a file "tmpgraph.bck" as the result of a context run that is not removed by the command "texutil --purge". I cannot remember after which ConTeXt-beta change this started. Is the texutil-script in need of updating? It is of course not a problem to remove this file by hand, but if texutil removes the rest it might is well remove this one. Hans van der Meer

piechartMP and context

Hi all, (especially Jens-Uwe) I just started to use the piechartMP package. I have succeeded in producing some quite nice charts using standalone metapost. But I am unable to convert these graphics to pdf via mptopdf, nor can I integrate them into context files. As soon as I try to switch to typesetting the labels using some TeX format, I get errors like 'Unable to make mpx file', or all labels simply show the same text, or... I have experimented with various setups, but I can't really locate the problem, sorry for this imprecise problem description. Can anybody provide me with some setup tips or a working setup? It would of course be best to have the labels typeset by context, respecting the MP environment of the document, but for the moment, a simply working setup would be a good start. Thanks, Eckhart

acronyms and xml?

I want to author documents in XML so I can reuse the content. How should I deal with acronyms, such that if I output to HTML I get all-caps, but if I typeset using ConTeXt (maybe using Simon's DocBook thing) I'd get small caps? Is there an element for this in DocBook, for example? Bruce

texexec --pages

Hi Hans, Today I decided to do some experiments with pdf. I tried the following command: texexec --pages=1:3,20 myfile.pdf texexec --pdfselect=1:3,20 myfile.pdf Both commands have identical failure: After starting the command, the 'myfile.pdf' is immediately renamed in texexec.pdf. Hereafter one should again type the input filename, which of course is not there anymore. - So texexec renames the input file while it still should load it with the original input-file name. nonstopmode

Hello out there, I am currently writing some editor support for ConTeXt and I would like to get the `nonstop' mode for (pdf)tex working. So I edited the texexec.ini and changed for tetex set TeXBatchFlag to -int=nonstopmode (it was -int=batchmode) just for a test. With this file: \starttext \input tufte \thisdoesnotexist \stopttext and running texexec error.tex I get: ================================================== [...] ! Undefined control sequence. l.5 \thisdoesnotexist ? R OK, entering \nonstopmode... ! Undefined control sequence. l.8 \stopttext ) ! Emergency stop. <*> &cont-en error.tex No pages of output. ================================================== but now with --batch (that I have changed to nonstopmode) I get ================================================== [...] language : patterns 2:2-en-2 4:2-de-2 5:2-fr-2 loaded specials : tex,postscript,rokicki loaded system : error.top loaded (./error.top run time : 1 seconds total run time : 1 seconds ================================================== So my question is: how do I get real nonstop mode (as with `R' above but from the beginning) and would you please add this option to texexec? ConTeXt doesn't accept some environments anymore

Hello, I just noticed that the 2003.1.10 version of context doesn't read environments anymore, when they are in the previous directory; I have to put them in the same directory as the processed file, it seems. Buffers and grouping

Hi all, I thought that \startbuffer and stopbuffer would cause grouping within the buffer. e.g. \startbuffer[mybuffer] \switchtobodyfont[small] a bunch of text \stopbuffer \starttext \section{First} \getbuffer[mybuffer] \section{Second} \getbuffer[mybuffer] \section{Third} \getbuffer[mybuffer] \section{Fourth} \getbuffer[mybuffer] \stoptext Compiling the above example results in a fontsiye decreasing step by step. I am using: ConTeXt ver: 2003.1.10 fmt: 2003.1.18 int: english mes: english How should I reverse to the originally setup fontsize: \setupbodyfont[ss,12pt] \starttext \section{One} text text \section{Two} \switchtobodyfont[small] much more text with need to typset in [small] \switchtobodyfont[normal] <------ This does not result in what I need.. \section{Four} text text Thanks for hints! presentation step

Hi, There were quite some questions about this hackery mechanism. The problem is that it depends on pdf being reliable. I could reimplement it using some recent new trickery, but will look into that later (no time now). So, as a compromise, i made s-pre-50 to play with. I have no idea how well it works with the other styles, but at least it shows some trickery (as well as force GB into source-mode, i.e. reading core-box.tex -) I uploaded a new beta (this one also repairs a few bugs, as well as provides more extensive side float support (i hope things will not fail too much), on which i will upload an updates details.pdf somewhere next week. presentationstep again

Now that \presentationstep seems usable, I have another problem. And since - text would have to be above the background but below the shield - the shield would have to be above the text but below the background I have no idea how to do it. Just sticking to plain backgrounds? Ok, that's not really bad. But those in the audience who are not interested in what you say anyway are often easy to impress by a fancy background - at least. Greetings! Is it possible to have parts of the ConTeXt file processed conditionally? I'm hoping to be able to do something like: (in ConTeXt file) Question: What is the derivative of $e^{sqrt{x}}$\\ \some-command-start Answer: $\frac{d}{dx} e^{sqrt{x}} ... $ \some-command-end So that, in the command line, if I run "texexec --pdf quiz01.tex" then it will NOT include the answer section, but if I run "texexec --pdf quiz01.tex -some-other-command" it WILL also include the answer section. I'm confident this can be done through an if or if-defined construct. However, I could not find such commands/macros in the ConTeXt manuals (both the beginners and the detailed manual). Justifying paragraphs.

I receive many MSWord documents which I then convert to plain text or LaTeX etc. Typically all the characters in a paragraph are crowded onto one line. This makes editing a bore. I can use: gqap to change an individual paragraph to a series of lines of standard length. But I haven't found a global way to do it to all paragraphs. \presentationstep: recent changes?

A couple of months ago, Hans posted the attached example in response to a desperate request for a working \presentationstep. I remember having tried it, and it worked at that time. With my current context (2003.1.10), this is no longer the case. The whole text area is covered by the presentationshield, and clicking the Whatever-Button has no effect. I guess there have been changes to the \presentationstep mechanism. Since I would (maybe) like to use this for a publication soon, I'm wondering how to get it working with a recent context. Eckhart
