How to use the minimal Context distribution?

Hi all, I tried to use the new minimal Context distribution under Windows. 1. I unpacked the file mswintex.zip.bz2. 2. I added the folder tex/texmf-mswin/bin to the path. 3. I tried to execute texexec. I got the the error message that the DLL tl80kpse.dll is not available. Does anyone know what I have to do? Thanks for your attention, --Stefan

[OT] compiling pdfTeX 1.2 on MacOS X

Hello together! I know, this is a bit OT, but... The latest beta of ConTeXt needs pdfTeX 1.20, and I'd like to use it but the latest pdfTeX doesn't compile completely on my Panther, I always get the following last words after some making and compiling: /bin/sh ../libtool --mode=compile "gcc -no-cpp-precomp" -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I../../../src/texk/kpathsea -I.. -I../../../src/texk/kpathsea/.. -g -O2 -DMAKE_KPSE_DLL -c ../../../src/texk/kpathsea/tex-file.c "gcc -no-cpp-precomp" -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I../../../src/texk/kpathsea -I.. -I../../../src/texk/kpathsea/.. -g -O2 -DMAKE_KPSE_DLL -c ../../../src/texk/kpathsea/tex-file.c -o tex-file.o ../libtool: line 1: gcc -no-cpp-precomp: command not found make[1]: *** [tex-file.lo] Error 1 make: *** [../kpathsea/libkpathsea.la] Error 2 I don't speak C, so I don't understand if it tells that "gcc -no-cpp-precomp" is wrong (can't be, it works anywhere) or that libtool is wrong or what? Font sizes.

Hi, I have 2 questions: 1. When you say something like : \definebodyfont[10pt][rm][tfe=lbr at 36pt] Do i have to provide the 36pts font files at first and install them or does context adapt a font file with another size to the 36pt size ? 2. I have installed a font which i got with a .pfb and a .afm file. When i make the following calls: \pdfmapfile{+texnansi-rubicon-karatmedium.map} \font\Myfont=texnansi-raw-KAMN \setupbodyfont[Myfont] \starttext This is roman, {\bf bold}, {\it italic}, {\bi bold-italic}, {\tfa bigger} and {\tfx smaller}. \stoptext Which size is going to be displayed ? Undefined control sequence. <argument> \c!gebied

OK, I tried several things to fix the error "Undefined control sequence. <argument> \c!gebied," but it persists. I wiped out my entire texmf.local tree and started from scratch because I thought the c!gebied was residing in some older file that ha dnot been overwritten. But even starting from scratch wouldn't amend the situation; after regenerating the format, I get the same error. However, grepping for "c!gebied" in the newly created tree gives only this result: grep -r 'c!gebied' ./* ./tex/context/base/cont-sys.ori:% \setupexternalfigures [\c!gebied={e:/fig/eps,t:/mine/figs}] ./tex/context/user/cont-sys.rme:% \setupexternalfigures [\c!gebied={e:/fig/eps,t:/mine/figs}] So this shouldn't be the problem since these two lines in cont-sys.rme are commented out. Does anybody have an idea where the error is coming from? There must be some old config file re-introducing it into the format file, but I can't seem to find it. Baffled Thomas

Nightmare after upgrading

I've never thought it could be such a big problem. after several unsuccessful tries I decided to restored the old version, but I even couldn't go back! it seems that context has kept "memory" somewhere to trace the version changes. after 3 hours tired struggle I've lost all the patience and all the hope... I've also heared similar stories from other people, but I just wonder how it could be a trouble to upgrade a package like context? Best regards, Minchao

Very tasteful new look, I like the colors (except for the "links" page, the mauve doesn't go very well with the rest). One has to get used to the idea that a website is presented like a pdf document in sequential order, but the clean look is quite beautiful. Of course, I was impatient and downloaded the latest version, and now I get a couple errors when processing, but I hope can straighten that out. Congratulations, Hans, wonderful work! Best Thomas

Entities names instead of characters in header texts

Hello, I am having problems with setting up header texts based on source xml utf-8 coded. When I use: \useXMLfilter [utf] \defineXMLargument [imie-i-nazwisko] \title \setupheadertexts[title] I get the title right, e.g.: Maria Giżbert whereas the header text is: Maria Gi"zdotaccent b ert I attach the necessary files (without graphic files of course). thanks a lot Hans, now it works perfect! maybe later you can write a script to make the installation and configuration automatic? ConTeXt is great, but sometimes it's a little boring to make it working properly. Hi, found an old thread in the list archives, Adam Warner and Hans, but there was no real conclusion. Can this be done in ConTeXt? I want the following setup for my headers: mirror doublesided, on the even pages pagenumber leftaligned, chaptertitle midaligned; odd pages sectiontitle midaligned, pagenumber rightaligned; like so: 9______chapter______ || ______section______10 If I am not completely mistaken, setupheadertexts takes either one argument (identical header fo all pages, midaligned) or two (identical header for all pages, rightaligned/leftaligned) or four (mirroring even/odd headers, rightaligned/leftaligned). I think what we need here would be for \setupheadertexts to accept SIX arguments: \setupheadertexts[even left][even middle][even right][odd left][odd middle][odd right] Or is there another way to do this, and I'm just too stupid to see it? strange behavior of MetaFun

Hi, recently I've installed ConTeXt and after all the complicated configurations I could finally write my first chinese text, but as I tried MetaFun today, I got very strange error message: I tried to compile the trivial sample on the first page of "metafun-p.pdf": \starttext \startuseMPgraphic{dummy} fill fullcircle scaled 5cm withcolor red ; \stopuseMPgraphic \useMPgraphic{dummy} \stoptext I invoked "texexec test", after some messages scrolled by it stopped and show: !Equation cannot be performed (numeric=boolean) local_multi_par_area:=false; I traced to that line in the file "test-mpgraph.mp" which has been produced by texexec in the first step and I simply deleted it, then I ran "mpost test-mpgraph" manually and got "test-mpgraph.1" without any problem, but as I viewed it with GSview there was only a quarter of disc, which should be a 5cm filled circle. I've also tried with other Metapost files but got always the same result: that line will always be added to the intermedia file. I think it's not because of a wrong configuration of ConTeXt but something "deep inside". btw. I'm using MikTeX 2.2, ActivePerl 5.8, ConTeXt is the newest version while TeXExec somehow old (v3.1), but I don't think the problem lies there because exept metapost the other part works well, for the configuration of MetaFun I've done following: I first edited the corresponding part of /texmf/context/config/texexec.ini to be suited to MikTeX, then after refreshing MikTeX name database I did a "texexec --make --alone metafun", it produced metafun.mem in /localtexmf/miktex/fmt, I moved it then to /localtexmf/miktex/mem now I absolutely have no idea about it... I would be very thankful if someone can tell how to fix around, besides I do want to know what's wrong. Best regards, Minchao

On TeX-D-L (german ML) was last week a dicussion about a PPCHTeX bug (at least with LaTeX), it seems that the file ppchtex.tex lost its tail (ca. 3kB). I told the user to ask at the PPCHTeX Mailing list, but he only got a message, that the list was moderated. Could someone care about this, please? I never used PPCHTeX... Fonts in ConTeXt

We have installed quite a lot of fonts (mathtimepro, lucidabr, cm-super, ...). Currently we are using these fonts with LaTeX. All fonts are working correctly, i. e. we have the following files for each font afm/tfm/vf/pfb as well as map file for xdvi, dvips, dvipdfm and pdftex, Here is my question: How can we use all these fonts with ConTeXt? Is there an easy way to do so? positioning layers again

Hi all, I have managed to create my poster, arranging stuff on the page using layers. But I have to admit that I have used hard-coded coordinates for all layers. (I used a metapost grid in the background for measuring and aligning in the draft version.) If anybody is interested, I can make the poster and the source available online after the conference. I don't want to be nerving, but to make things easier in the future, I would like to repeat my question: How to position layers relative to each other, not relative to a common coordinate origin? (So that you don't have to move subsequent layers if some box changes its height etc.) I have experimented a bit with the stuff in the 'positional graphics' chapter of the metafun manual, but didn't make it. Poster with layers

Hi all, I have to prepare a scientific poster, and of cause using anything except TeX is below a real scientist's dignity. The main problem is that I have to arrange content rather freely on the page, without the regularity imposed by using tables or columns. Using layers for this purpose is probably best. I have started with something like: \definelayer[ModelingLayer] \setupbackgrounds[page][background=ModelingLayer] \setlayer[ModelingLayer][position=no,x=1cm,y=1cm]{% \framed{Whatever}} This seems to work well enough for my purposes. Or does anybody have a better idea? Then please let me know. My main at the moment is positioning. I would like to position one layer relative to another. Say for example, 'top left edge of layer x 2cm below and 3cm right of bottom center of layer y'. So, how can I access the necessary values, i.e. x, y, width, depth, height of a layer? Hi, I'm recently trying to get ConTeXt typesetting my books like with LaTeX before (or better). But I can't solve some problems ... Maybe someone can assist me? o How do I get the chapter number into the heading? I've tried \setupheader[before=\viii,style=normal] \setupheadertexts[chapter] but this only puts the chapter title into the heading o How can I get something similar to LaTeX? \fancyhead[C]{% {\sffamily\footnotesize \leftmark \pdef\next{\rightmark}% \ifx\next\empty\else\ \textbullet\ \rightmark\fi}% } which will put the chapter mark centered in the headings, and if there is a sectionmark then a bullet & sectionmark too. o How can I typeset the chapter title across both columns in a two-column setup? o How can I tell ConTeXt the distance between columns? Or should I define only the columnwidth? How? My first defintion looks like \setuplayout[width=358dd,lines=46,topspace=11mm,backspace=17mm, margin=0cm,marking=on,location=middle,grid=yes,header=12bp, headerdistance=18bp,footer=12bp,footerdistance=11mm] o How can I tell ConTeXt to balance the last page? Hi, as there seemed to be interactions between ConTeXt that comes with TeXLive and the recent one I've installed, I finally deleted EVERYTHING and started anew. -> I installed TeXLive on a WinXP - without the ConTeXt option. -> I copied the saved texec.exe in TeXLive's /bin folder -> I installed bin-aleph-1.15--2.2--RC2-win32.zip from CTAN -> I executed the following comands: mktexlsr fmtutil --all mktexlsr texexec --make --all --alone --tex=aleph mktexlsr texexec alephtest1.tex --tex=aleph --output=dpx But again it failed and ended in "*". There ought to be people out there who got Aleph (+ConTeXt) working. How did you do that? Could someone please have a look and tell what is wrong? How to implement a changing navigation bar?

Hi all, I use an overlay to implement a navigation bar in the left margin of a document. It seems to me that the processing of the overlay is done only once and not for every page again. In addition, the \lastpage is not available. Does anyone know a solution? Maybe headers/footers are a solution. But how is absolute positioning accomplished with them? Part number in formula numbers?

Hello, what I'm trying to achieve is a way to have formula numbers contain the part number together with the chapter number, as in: a = b (part.chapter.formula) instead of a = b (chapter.formula) which is what you have by default, or a = b (part.formula) which is the only alternative I manage to obtain. I use a font for \chapter that does print u-diearesis with \"u. Then I decided to write a small definition \udotdot that uses \char200 to print the diaeresis on top of the letter u. The problem now is that in my table of contents, the font is different, and the \char200 has a different meaning. How do I resolve this problem? thank you Ciro

Natural Table does not allow using defined typing in its cell

Hello, I found a strange (to me) bTABLE behaviour. Imposition features/limitations.

On pages 39 ff and section 3.6 of _The Context Manual_ there are examples of different page imposition methods. I wonder if this has been extended to the level of true prepress software, with compensation for paper thickness and/or skew when folded and cut? Or is it just a demonstration of what could be done? Hi, I have 2 questions: 1. Is there anyway to answer the messages on this archive without replying to the corresponding received mail? I would like to update a previous post but can't manage to do it. 2. I would like to define a new layout that does not contain left and right margins. This layout is going to divide my page to 4 parts as a matrix of 2x2. How can i do that ? Is there anyway to identify each part of them in the same way as we identify the left and right margins within the default layout ? Is this in relation with margin and opposite blocks ? Many thanks. bTABLE rogue column widths

Hi all. I have the following code, used to set quotations with over-large quote marks either side. I use the bTABLE/eTABLE model because it is easy, and because it allows for the variable width of the quotation part (the middle column) and for it to carry over into multiple lines. When this code is run, the first one works as expected (the cell containing the quote is the width of the quote text). The second one produces a quote cell which expands so that the table fills the whole width of the page, even though the quote text itself is thinner than the previous one. I have left the lines in the table to show the problem. This runs on live.contextgarden.net and shows the same behaviour. Any thoughts on how to fix it to make the second one work like the first? Movie as externalfigure

Hi all, probably I'm missing something trivial, but I can't make context include a mov-file. Here is my input: \starttext \externalfigure[mdmovie.mov] [label=md,width=4cm,height=4cm,preview=yes] \stoptext I don't get a movie in the pdf resulting from `texexec --pdf`, only this message seems to be a hint: figures : figure mdmovie.mov is not preset I found this problem in the archive; it was solved by specifying height and width. But I did already specify both height and width, so what's the problem? The movie is located in the same directory as the tex-file, so it has to be found, too. (And I guess 'preset' is not a typo anyway, is it?) I couldn't find anything helpful in the docs or the wiki, either. My version is the latest beta: pdfeTeX, Version 3.14159-1.10a-RC3-2.1 (Web2C 7.4.3) ConTeXt ver: 2004.8.18 fmt: 2004.9.16 int: english mes: english Thanks in advance, Eckhart

\dh in ConTeXt

Dear all, Using the following input in LaTeX I could get the output below. But try as I might I cannot achieve this in ConTeXt. \documentclass[12pt,a4paper]{article} \usepackage{palatino} \usepackage[T1]{fontenc} \usepackage[applemac]{inputenc} My input for ConTeXt is: \enableregime[mac] \usetypescriptfile [adobekb] \setupencoding [default=ec] \usetypescript [adobekb] [\defaultencoding] \usetypescript[palatino][\defaultencoding] \starttext Howth {\em H\k{o}f\dh i} / {\em H\k{o}f\dh a}, ... Output from the console says that \dh is an undefined control sequence. This and similar commands are mentioned in Kopka and Daly: A guide to LaTeX2e p. 423. In LaTeX using \dh \DH \th \TH I get the result below. But the \ng \NG produce the black rule. I would be happy if just the \dh worked. I note that the encoding in LaTeX is T1. In Hans's Fonts in ConTeXt p. 17 this seems to be the equivalent to 8r. I tried this but with no success. I would be most grateful if anyone can help. I use a Mac OSX 1.3.5. My TeX installation is throught Gerben's installer.
