Hi, I believe I have isolated the problem: \starttext balance \startmixedcolumns[balance=yes,] \dorecurse{8}{\input{ward}} \stopmixedcolumns %\page strut \startmixedcolumns[grid=strut,] \dorecurse{4}{\input{knuth}} \stopmixedcolumns \stoptext When balanced mixedcolumns are followed by mixedcolumns using a strut grid, then the content of the second mixedcolumns will extend into the footer area on the next page. However, if the content of the strut grid mixedcolumns is long enough to incur a page break on that next page, then no content spills into the footer. How can I help fix this?

Trimming strings and Lua string.trim question

I am trying to strip all leading and trailing whitespace from a string. I have tried two methods, neither of which is satisfactory. The first method uses \ignorespaces and \removeunwantedspaces. This fails to strip leading and trailing newlines. The second method uses the Lua string.strip function. The wiki description: Yields string with leading and trailing whitespace (spaces, horizontal and vertical tabs, newlines) removed suggests that this should do what I want, but I find that it removes internal whitespace as well as the leading and trailing whitespace. Can somebody suggest a better way of doing this? Placing marks at edge.

You have seen them in books from O'Reilly and even in books like "TeX for the Impatient": markings on the outer edge of each odd page that bleed past the page edge indicating a particular chapter. In the last named they are a simple box with very fine horizontal black lines. In some O'Reilly books like "Web Design in a Nutshell" they are a black box with the chapter name (possibly abbreviated) rotated 90 degrees in small white text. No doubt I can do this in Context. The question is what is the simplest and most foolproof way home. Of course the page size will be made larger by 0.125 inch on all sides except the spine edge to provide a trim. The marker box I describe protrudes into the trim area. And its location and the text change for each chapter of course. It is very hard in this country to get a book review by the important pre-publication reviewers like Booklist and Library Journal. But that review is the key to among other things library sales and academic sales. Selectfont: extend and slant features

Dear list, the (fake) extend and slant features seem to be missing with Selectfont. Will they be made available sometimes in the future? Or am I simply doing something wrong? (critical edition) wrong page breaks with linenotes

Hi Thomas, Luigi and Hans, I have a sample (http://www.ousia.tk/hefestio-ctx.tex) that shows problematic page breaks with notes in paragraph form. This is especially relevant for linenotes in critical editions. The compiled version (http://www.ousia.tk/hefestio-ctx.pdf) shows results at twelve, thirteen and fourteen points. I know I’m using a font that is not part of the ConTeXt Suite, but it is the one that gives me the faulty results. Of course, it isn’t the only problematic one. In the source, \setupnote is set in both linenotes to [split=verystrict, scope=page] to avoid having linenotes that refer to a line from the previous page. If I’m not missing something or doing something wrong, I think that a way to solve this (sorry, I don’t know the internals, but the suggestion might be a valid one) is to set a kind of penalty that does the following: if the line in its final position doesn’t observe the space before of the first apparatus, it should be moved to the next page. Isn’t this proposal similar to the way widow and orphans are avoided by setting penalties? Many thanks for your help, Pablo -- http://www.ousia.tk

Margin notes

I am trying to compile a 2-year-old mkiv document with the latest beta and am getting an error on the line \inleft[style=bold,stack=continue] Two years ago, stacking of margin notes was still experimental, so I'm guessing something has changed since then. What is the correct way these days to typeset margin notes? Thank you, Severin

\starthanging and hangafter

I am using using \starthanging...\stophanging to embed a small image in a paragraph in a footnote. Trying to use my local otf math font by editing typescript

Hi here. I was trying to use my own math font in Mark IV, inside distribution TeX Live 2013, using typescript, but failed. The way I am thinking, I might use an fallback way. For most of the math symbols, I would use the provided palatino stuff, but for MathRoman and MathItalic, I'd like to use the same font as of normal text, let's say Minion Pro. As I'm looking into a normal typescript file, I thought of a few options: First of all, just overwrite the Palatino typescript, like follows: \starttypescript \definefontsynonym [MathRoman] [name:minionproregular] \definefontsynonym [MathItalic][name:minionproit] \stoptypescript It gives out "Math error: parameter \Umathquad\displaystyle is not set ..." Another way I'm trying, is to use some fall back mode. \starttypescript [math] [palatino] \setups[font:fallback:math] \definefontsynonym [MathRoman] [name:minionproregular] \definefontsynonym [MathItalic][name:minionproit] \stoptypescript It also doesn't work. The result was same as the previous. And I also tried \starttypescript [math] [palatinofb] \usetypescript[math][palatino] \definefontsynonym [MathRoman] [name:minionproregular] \definefontsynonym [MathItalic][name:minionproit] \stoptypescript This also makes no difference. Inspired by http://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/150566/minionpro-including-math-in-c…, I also tried the \definefallbackfamily, it turn out to be an undefined control sequence. In the main typescript, I uses \definetypeface[MinionPro-Mixed][mm][math][palatino][default] So I cannot find out how to fulfill my need. I guess there might because of a missing map file, but for a roman font, do we need any? Euler with fallback

Hi all, This is to announce that the latest beta supports creating virtual math fonts with fallback. The main test case is to use Euler font with missing characters taken from Pagella but the mechanism is general and can be used to replace a specific set of math glyphs from a font. This feature is not extensively tested. As such it will be useful if everyone interested in math fallback mechanism could test this out and report any bugs or inconsistencies. To use this feature you have to use `pagellaovereuler` as your math font. For example, to use Euler with DejaVu fonts, use: \usetypescriptfile[euler] \starttypescript[mainface] \definetypeface[mainface][rm][serif][dejavu] [default] \definetypeface[mainface][ss][sans] [dejavu] [default] \definetypeface[mainface][tt][mono] [dejavu] [default] \definetypeface[mainface][mm][math] [pagellaovereuler][default] \stoptypescript \setupbodyfont[mainface] \appendtoks \rm \to \everymathematics \setupmathematics [lcgreek=normal, ucgreek=normal] There is a built-in typescript `euler-with-pagella` to use `pagellaovereuler` as the math font and `pagella` as the text font. Plain format not building

% macros=mkvi \setupwhitespace[small] \def\ä<^>?z{Ä<^>?} \def\Named[#PARAMETERNAME]{¦#PARAMETERNAME¦} \def\Numbered[#1]{¦#1¦} \starttext \subject{Regression between TL2013 and current beta} There does appear to have been some change or regression in the definition of allowed characters in parameter names between the versions of TL2013 ({\tt ConTeXt ver: 2013.05.28 00:36 MKIV current fmt: 2013.12.11}) and the current standalone beta ({\tt ConTeXt ver: 2014.02.14 17:07 MKIV beta fmt:2014.2.14}) The definition \type{\def\Named[#PARAMETERNAME]{¦#PARAMETERNAME¦}} (using BROKEN BAR, U00A6) is processed without error and gives an acceptable result under TL2013. Under the current beta it fails. When warnings are skipped in the current beta, the generated PDF shows that the trailing BROKEN BAR appears to be treated as a part of the parameter name: \Named[value]. With numbered parameters (\type{\def\Numbered[#1]{¦#1¦}}), all is well in both versions: \Numbered[value]. This issue makes it difficult to convert macros that use delimiters (for example, \type{\def\ABC#1×#2¦{#1\ #2}}) to Mark VI syntax, and difficult to create such macros under Mark VI. \subject{What is allowed \ä<^>?z} What characters are acceptable in Mark VI parameter names? What characters are acceptable in Mark IV and Mark VI macro names? The wiki states: \quotation{Mark VI is identical to Mark IV in every respect, except that when you define a new macro you can give parameters names instead of numbers.} Other than that, there is no guidance. Experimentation shows that many more characters are allowed in \CONTEXT{} identifiers than are generally allowed with other \TeX{} engines. The definition providing the last part of the subject of this section, \type{\def\ä<^>?z{Ä<^>?}}, presents no problems. (That definition fails in Lua\TeX, \pdfTeX, and \XeTeX. Hi guys, I haven't played with ConTeXt for three month because of my examinations. Today, I delete the old version and reinstall a new one from the ConTeXt garden, but it seems that the new one can't run successfully. It says that unknown script 'context.lua' or 'mtx-context.lua. Strange behaviour with columnar itemized text

Hi, I encountered two issues where itemized text within columns behaves unexpectedly. There appear to be two issues, possibly related. I will provide the shorter example first, which produces overlapping text on the second page (http://i.imgur.com/zMW6yk4.png) Changing \blank[.2em] to \blank[small] resolves the first issue. Removing inbetween={\blank[small]}, resolves the second issue. Given that changing the \blank command affects the results, I think they might be related somehow. I'm not concerned about the first issue -- changing ".25em" to "small" is fine. The second issue, however, leaves me perplexed for a solution to avoid the issue while maintaining the desired vertical whitespace (see (http://i.imgur.com/n46zEhf.png) between items. Any suggestions? Dear gang, With a couple of modifications I got tikz-cd (a package to make commutative diagrams for categories and toposes etc. by Florêncio Neves) working in mkiv: http://texdoc.net/texmf-dist/doc/latex/tikz-cd/tikz-cd-doc.pdf It depends on the tikz module, already supported in mkiv. It's not needed anyway since that's pdftex. 2 In tikzlibrarycommute.code.tex, line 395 I had to add the option ampersand replacement=\& to avoid a TeX error. So you'll have to use '\&' instead of '&' for matrix arrays. 3 Some LaTeX-specific stuff is commented, and support is added for \starttikzcd \stoptikzcd so we get a ConTeXt environment. I'm hoping someone can volunteer to place this on the wiki, perhaps even set it up on the modules page, with an indication of its proper place in the texmf-modules tree etc. Any other improvements will also be appreciated. Hans, I attach two text samples in Spanish. Both are in the public domain, since both authors died before 1650 and the texts were published the first time more than centuries ago. using environments with project structure (in MkIV)

I'm having trouble using project structure and font loading together in MkIV. Here's how the problem arises. As Aditya and Wolfgang have pointed out, the recommended way to set up fonts in MkIV is before \starttext or \startcomponent. For a component, the setups usually go in an environment file that is referenced by the project file, and the project file is mentioned with a \project, e.g. \startcomponent test \project testproject \input knuth \stopcomponent However, the \project line has to come *after* \startcomponent. If it comes before \startcomponent, then context doesn't process the component file at all, and no PDF file is generated. An example: \project testproject \startcomponent test \input knuth \stopcomponent (with testproject.tex containing \startproject blah \stopproject) A workaround is to replace the \project line with \environment env where env is what testproject would have included anyway. e.g. \environment env \startcomponent test \input knuth \stopcomponent Here, env.tex has all the setups including the font setups (and one would do the same in the product file, i.e. in the file that includes the components, by putting "\environment env" before the \startproduct). The first problem is that it seems some of the functionality of products, projects, and components is lost. But maybe that's a matter of taste. Another problem is that env.tex doesn't know that one is compiling a product or component---thus, the system modes *product and *component are not defined while reading env.tex. Is there another way of doing project structure that I am missing? My update to the wiki page on project structure (on putting \project before \startcomponent) seems to be wrong, and I'll fix it once I understand what to do! -Sanjoy
