Selecting a page as a figure from a pdf

All, I am aware of \filterpages but I would like to be able to insert part of a single page from a multi page pdf and I have not been able to find anything on the list of manuals. (\clip does not seem to work with \filterpages). Does anybody have any ideas? TIA -- Nigel

MP figures in the background

Hi, I'm doing a christmars card in ConTeXt!. I've the following setup \setuppapersize[CD][A4] \setuplayout[marking=on,location=middle] \starttext \startuseMPgraphic{dummy} ... ... \stopuseMPgraphic \defineoverlay[backfigure][\useMPgraphic{dummy}] \setupbackground[paper][background=backfigure] \hbox{} \stoptext I need the \hbox{} because there has to be something to typeset. The next thing i want to do is to have a second page. I use the \page[yes] command. The problem is that with this the background apears to in the second page, and i don't want that. How can i define a background figure only for certain page? Thanks in advance, Zunbeltz

MetaPost with etex/btex

texexec page selection changes output?

(Sorry if this is the wrong list, I could not find a better one.) I recently used texexec to select a given page from a file (attached) of three pages: texexec --pdfselect --selection=2 --result=cover2-tx.pdf covers.pdf It worked fine, but bnb noticed that the resulting cover2-tx.pdf was different then the original: it is offset to the right by a pica or so, and the "TUGboat" is moved down a similar amount. When I extract the same page from the same file with gs: gs -q -dNOPAUSE -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -sOutputFile=cover2-gs.pdf \ -dFirstPage=2 -dLastPage=2 covers.pdf -c quit the result is correct, i.e., the extracted page is identical (as far as I can tell) to the original. This happens with texexec 4.0 (and also with 2.8 and 3.1). This is just FYI in case it's a bug you want to fix ... karl

Struggles with the bTABLE eTABLE environment

Hi Hans, Currently I am using the following version under Windows: ConTeXt ver: 2003.11.26 fmt: 2003.11.27 int: english mes: english and pdfeTeXk, Version 3.141592-1.11a-2.1 The attached code-sample breaks with an error of "missing number". Because I am sure, that this kind of table compiled previously I tried the following Next to the current installation I run on a linuxbox ConTeXt ver: 2003.7.3 fmt: 2003.7.7 int: english mes: english without problem and pdfeTeX, Version 3.14159-1.00b-pretest-20020211-2.1 The attached code compiles to expectation. Is there something changed in the bTABLE-eTABLE environment? Thanks for looking into it. Kind regards Willi

Hi ConteXers, Does somebody have done a quiz , like the ones found in "exerquiz " pdftex package (now bundled in "acrotex") from d.p. Story (info/exemples at http://melusine.eu.org/syracuse/acrotex/exemples/ (in french) or from the origin, in english at http://www.math.uakron.edu/~dpstory/acrotex.html) What interesting me a lot is the abilty for the reader to auto-evaluate himself. I wish to setup a whole course including theorical + exercises + auto evaluation, both (as possible) in screen and paper versions. Thanks for the tip. Olivier

double lines in tables?

Is there a way to create tables with double horizontal lines in ConTexXt? Using: \HL \HL Just causes ConTeXt to ignore one of them. William D. Can I compare with someone?

All, I've recently installed tetex 2.0.2. I am having difficulty with Metapost and I am wondering if I have a good installation. If someone else out there is running tetex 2.0.2, could you try the following on your system and tell me if you get similar results. Also, if I'm making some sort of silly mistake, please let me know. I have a little file named junk.mp. beginfig(1); path p; p:=fullcircle scaled 100pt; draw p; endfig; end. But when I compile, I still get 12pt. And the culprit seems to be: bodyfont : 12pt rm is loaded I tried the following workaround by editing junk.mp. But, mpost junk produces this error message: ! Undefined control sequence. l.1 \documentclass [10pt]{article} So, I try: mpost --tex=latex junk But now my system tries to build cont-en.fmt. Toward the end, one message I get is: Sorry, I can't find the format `cont-en.fmt'; will try `context.fmt'. But this doesn't make sense, as cont-en.efmt is already built. I am not interested in Word per se, but I find using emacs to insert markup during document creation gets in the way of my thought processes. This way I can push markup worries to the editorial stage. People are fond of pointing out Words vices, and I wouldn't quibble with arguments about its stability, but it is about time OpenOffice and its ilk stopped resting on their laurels and started implementing some macro capability. I notice that AbiWord has a DocBook output format, but how well integrated this is I don't know. On Micro$oft's part if they had some real competition a real market in third-party templates might arrive. As it stands I have a 50% solution that handles footnotes and lists, but re-distribution is hampered by the way Word handles its templates and virus worries. Theoretically I could do tables and limited image markup using the same techniques. Leveraging the visual layout tools of a word-processor makes so much sense I wonder at the mentality of people still struggling with text-editors. I have emacs set up on my machine, but it really looks like back to the future from my point of view. I use WinEdt when I'm booted into Windows. btw you can use the same technique to generate native Context markup. It needs hand-editting, but as a rough draft, this works fine for me, and I don't have to re-invent the wheel every time I have a new document. Christopher

Hi Hans, as it comes close to Christmas I'd like to tell you my biggest wish: "placefigure[top,left], placefigure[bottom,right]" (see below) Isn't there something that you could cook up for this special occasion? Active points on a ground plan (CD-ROM catalogue)

Hi, I'd like to make the CD-ROM catalogue (PDF) of an architectural exhibition in ConTeXt. In short the general idea is: - First you have a page with a map showing the locations of the different buildings. - Then you should point on location you are interested in and jump to the page where this particular building is described in detail. - Then again you should be able to jump back to the point (centered?) on the map where you have started. My main question now is: Is it possible in ConTeXt to locate/define on the map (one image) certain points/areas that will contain the links to respective the detail page? Thank you, Steffen

If Word hadn't got such a stupid macro installation technology (templates have never been promoted properly by Micor$oft) this would be routine stuff. It would probably be a pain to automatically markup tables, and handling image properties is something I haven't investigated, but as a 50% solution it works for me. As for TOCs and bibliographies, use Context. btw exactly the same technique works for generating LaTeX commands. Context is just so much more elegant. Christopher

\setuphead question (long section lines not wrapping)

I'm trying to layout a paper for a conference that requires a format different from the standard latex layout, and for the most part context has been making this quite easy on me (excluding the four hours I spent trying to mimic the latex \thanks{} construct), however, I've encoutered a new problem that's confusing me. since I'm sure the problem stems from my lack of plain tex and context knowledge, I figured someone here would know what I'm doing wrong, and asking you for help is certainly more pleasant than banging my head for another four hours only to find another trivial solution... My problem is this: I needed to place a "." after the number in the section and subsection headings, so I included the following in my preamble: % setup section headings to include a . after the section number \setuphead [section] [command=\mysec, indentnext=yes] \def\mysec#1#2{#1. #2} \setuphead [subsection] [command=\mysubsec, indentnext=yes] \def\mysubsec#1#2{#1. #2} This works just fine as far as inserting the ".", however, it has the side-effect of not wrapping long section of subsection headings. For example, \subsection[longsubsec]{This is a really long subsection heading that won't wrap} gets typeset all on a single line, which is not good since the paper is set in two columns... So, is there either a better (more proper) way to insert the ".", or at least a better command to use for \mysec and \mysubsec Thanks, William D. Hi, When using Hans' adaptation for typesetting bold math in a small example everything went fine. But when using it in a somewhat larger text I ran into the error: ! TeX capacity exceeded, sorry [hash size=35000]. I remember a discussion a few months ago about this problem in MikTeX. Is there any solution in MikTeX available? Thanks, Sytse

Context-mode for Emacs 21.3

Hello, the contex.el from Berend de Boer does not work properly on Emacs 21.3. I assume this is because Emacs now has a fill algorithm that works independently of auctex. Is there another Context-mode for Emacs? Boris Hollas

t-amsl and t-nath

Hello! I tried the modules t-amsl and t-nath. This is what I noticed or have questions about: 1. The bracket for \cases{} is too small when t-nath is used, as in this example: \usemodule[amsl] \usemodule[nath] \starttext We denote by \startformula 1_{ij} = \cases{ 1 & if $(i,j) \in \cal E$\cr 0 & else} \stopformula the {\em indicator function} of event $(i,j) \in \cal E$. \stoptext Without modules amsl and nath the brackets have correct size, but \cal has no effect. 2. Without module amsl, the above example produces an error message. 3. Module amsl uses \mathBbd{} for the blackboard fonts. I'm not sure if this is used in AMS-Latex, however neither amsmath nor amssymb introduce this command. Instead, there's a command \mathbb{} in amssymb for the blackboard fonts. 4. $\mathBbd{N}_0$ doesn't produce ${\mb N}_0$. Boris Hollas
