Just found that the code below does not work as intended, because \𝐝𝐢𝐦 will be parsed as \𝐝 followed by 𝐢𝐦. Can’t tell if it ought to be changed, though one could think other cases where it might be natural. The command definition of \𝐝 works though. \setupbodyfont[xits,10pt] \setupmathematics[lcgreek=normal, default=normal] \definemathcommand[𝐝𝐢𝐦][nolop]{\mfunction{𝐝𝐢𝐦}} \definemathcommand[𝐝][nolop]{\mfunction{𝐝𝐢𝐦}} \starttext Note that $\𝐝𝐢𝐦 𝑉 = 𝖫$, although $\dim 𝑉 = 4$. \stoptext

Building a Component

Hi all, I am just familiarising myself with projects/products/components. I have a number of documents that all belong to a large set of Reference Manuals and so far I have built them all separately and have relied a lot on the simple \input... statement. I assume with projects/products/components I might be able to do something much smarter. Let’s see. I get stuck quite early on, though. I have created a minimal component file ‘component-1.tex’ and when I build it, context runs into what seems to be an infinite recursion. fallback typeface not working

Typset Text on odd pages only

Hello, I'm looking for a way to produce a doublesided document with text on the odd pages only and floats on the even pages. Can somebody guide me in the right direction? Will something like \doifoddpageelse {typsettext} {\page} work? Thanks Michael

Placement of numbers in numbered equations on the left

Hi Hans, Thank you for having fixed the issue with numbered equations in math aligned environment, noticed and reported by Mikael Sundqvist. However the problem is solved only when the numbers are on the right: when the numbers are on the left, there is still a discrepancy between the location of numbers in equations numbered in an aligned environment and those which are by themselves. Hi, I write to this mailing list because the MetaPost mailing list has been silent for a while. I hope it is ok. I am getting to grips with MetaPost after a long hiatus, so I have not followed recent developments. I see that the version shipped with TeX Live 2016 is 1.9991 and that the current maintainer is Luigi. My questions: - What is the official MetaPost site (if there is any), with the latest source (superlec.fr does not seem up to date and I cannot find any code on CTAN)? - Are there any release notes to know what has changed since version 1.90x? - I know that LuaTeX uses an embedded version of MetaPost. Trace references

Dear list, when using cross referencing in my document, LaTeX has the nice warning messages LaTeX Warning: Reference 'foo' on page XX undefined on input line YY. LaTeX Warning: Label `foo' multiply defined. LaTeX Warning: There were undefined references. LaTeX Warning: There were multiply-defined labels. Is there something similar in ConTeXt? The wiki is a little outdated in that regard as \tracereferences does not exist anymore and also is probably not what I'm looking for. I already found \usemodule[references-show] but this only prints annotations on the page. Another thing, my bibliography emits like a hundred lines of backend > references > no internal reference 0 What triggers this warning? Cheers, Henri

Margin kerning for compounds

Dear list, when writing compound words I want the second part to be eligible for hyphenation to avoid bad breaks. Therefore, instead of »non-trivial« I write »non|-|trivial«. However, I noticed that when I make dash compound aware it is no longer kerned into the margin. MWE is below. How can I fix this? Bug with \underbar and \placefigure[right]

Dear list, I would like to report a bug: When \underbar is used for the first word of a paragraph in conjunction with \placefigure[right], the text overwrites the figure. Indentation after margin float with caption

Dear list, is it possible to have a margin figure with caption, and automatically have the next paragraph indented? Look at the example below (pdf result attached). If I add the none argument to the float, then the next paragraph is indented. Otherwise not. Is it a bug or a feature? Perhaps missing braces in buff-ini.mkiv?

Dear list, it seems as if there are braces missing in the definition of \buff_save around #2. \def\buff_save[#1][#2]% {... {\setupcurrentsavebuffer[\c!list={#1},\c!file=#2]}% ...} I think they are missing, because it makes the following work, even though arguments and key-value arguments shouldn't be mixed up. \startbuffer[hash] foo \stopbuffer \savebuffer[hash][hello.txt,prefix=no] \starttext \stoptext I think you should either make a third argument for a key-value list or just make the second argument the key-value list. Then users could input \savebuffer[hash][file=hello.txt,prefix=no]. Cheers, Henri

Get "right" numbers using blocks and enumerations

Hi, I'm trying to use blocks for answers in a text, but cannot get the numbering to work as I want. I have read about \processblocks at the wiki (http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Command/processblocks) but I'm not sure that is my cure. I probably miss something easy... What I want to have in the answer chapter is A 1.1, A 1.2, A 2.1 and A 2.2. (to follow the numbering in the chapters where the blocks were defined). Is it possible? What have I missed? Can this be done? 2) Is it possible to circumvent the misplacement of the second theorem due to the placed figure? Ideally, the theorem would just use the space to the left it. Issues with the documentation: - In “ConTeXt Commands”, it says on page 224 that \setupenumeration inherits from \setupcounter; but in “ConTEXt reference manual", it says on page 246 that \setupenumerations inherits from \setupdescriptions. - In “ConTEXt reference manual”, the key “location” for \defineenumeration should probably replaced by “alternative”. Right now, all examples on page 247 are unaffected by this setting and hence look the same. - The wiki seems to use MKII, which makes a difference for the example on http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Command/enumeration, which compiles differently under ConTeXT online. Wrong bookmark for TOC

Dear list, when I specify that titles should be added to the bookmarks, the text of the bookmark is somewhat wrong. The heading of the table of contents is »Contents«, so I expect this to appear as bookmark. Unfortunately, the bookmark read »content« (all lowercase and singular). MWE is below. How do I fix this? Hello list. I want to report a very annoying issue when one use oldstyle numbers by default. Creating cloze texts

Dear list, I would like to create cloze texts for my students with ConTeXt. Ideally, I would have a command \cloze[<width>]{<solution>} with the following functionality: 1) \cloze{<solution>} would insert an underlined gap in the text with a width of (say) 1.3 times the width of solution and puts the solution on top of it with centered alignment. I will then color the text read if the mode is ‘teacher’ and in white if not. 2) \cloze[<width>]{<solution>} would do the same, but with a fixed width of the underline. The solution should then be flush left, maybe with a horizontal space of \quad. 3) The underline should allow for line breaks and hyphenation, but not such that only empty space is broken into the next line of left in the previous (see MNWE). In this way, the student’s and teacher’s versions of the script will look exactly the same, except for the visible solution in the teacher’s version. The macro \underbar does a good job in terms of line breaks and hyphenation. But it is "too smart" in the sense that it does not underline horizontal spaces. The MNWE below showcases problems with my naive attempts to achieve underlining: - CLOZE 1 does not have any extra space. - CLOZE 2 does not underline the horizontal spaces. - CLOZE 3 does not show the underline, supposedly because the first text elements in it are white. - CLOZE 4 shows that introducing fake characters is not a good idea anyways because the cloze is broken without any “real” solution in the first line. - CLOZE 5 shows the same for trailing space. Figure-text alignment and wrapping text more tightly

Dear list, I am interested in placing a figure on the right-hand side of the page and wrap text around it, see MWE below. This works mostly nicely. But I have got three questions: 1) Is it possible to top-align the figure with the first line of the paragraph to its left? 2) Is there a way to reduce the vertical gap between the first and second figures? 3) The keyword “low” for \placefigure seems to have an effect. But I don’t know why and could not find a reference to that in contextref.pdf. Is this the correct way to wrap text “more tightly” below the figure (compare second and third figures). Problem finding 'cow'

Hello, it seems my ConTeXt doesn't find its own 'cow.pdf'. The file is located in c:\Ctx-Beta\tex\texmf-context\tex\context\sample\common\cow.pdf when the whole ConTeXt is located in c:\Ctx-Beta\tex\ My resulting .pdf shows no image; and also there is no info in the .log where ConTeXt tried to find the image. mathalignment and grid

Dear list, when I typeset multi line equations using mathalignment and grid the descenders of the last line of equation run into the first line of text after that equation. The problem is particularly bad with the Lucida fonts (I think the large operators are relatively larger than for Latin Modern). I could just increase the spacing after equation (commented out in the MWE below), but that would introduce an imbalance between space before and space after for all equations without descenders. Furthermore the problem does not arise for single line equations with descenders. Without grid there is also no problem. How do I fix mathalignment to prevent this? Problems with indexing (+feature requests)

Hello, For a few days I have been playing with registers to generate an RTL index. Beside sorting, I ran into the following. 1) How can I get the index section using \subject? In some styles, I do not want to see the section number. 2) How can I get the Persian comma used instead of the English comma in page numbers and also before "see also"? The first one I can fix by a hack but not the second one: defining a custom pagecommand that sets \registerpageseparatorsymbol to the Persian comma! There is a TODO comment in strc-reg.mkiv that the comma customization has been planned. 3) In RTL registers, if an entry starts with an LTR char, the order of index entry and page number will be incorrect. We had similar issues with section headings before. I can "fix" this by setting pagestyle=\zwnj, but is there a more principled way to handle this? See the MWE below. 4) Is there a way to define the style of "see also" different from pagestyle? What if I want to distinguish "see also" from the actual entry this is referring to? 5) Currently I use \setupmixedcolumns[register][direction=reverse] to get the two-column register in the correct order. What if I have two index registers, one for RTL and another for LTR? Is there a way to set the direction key for a specific register? 6) In a two-column Persian index, using almost any (non-mono) font, some letter headings (those extending significantly below the baseline) end up with extra space below. See attached PDF and the MWE. Source very outdated

Dear list, I'm quite new to ConTeXt and have worked my way through a lot of documentation. The Garden is an invaluable source as well as this mailing list. Sometimes it occurs that a feature which is announced on the mailing list is neither documented in the Garden nor in some PDF. Then I proceed to browse the source where I found four resources: (1) local (for TeXlive in /usr/local/texlive/2016/texmf-dist/tex/context) (2) http://source.contextgarden.net/ (3) http://repo.or.cz/w/context.git (4) https://bitbucket.org/phg/context-mirror The first three are outdated and the last doesn't offer full text search. I could update the first source, but I don't want to break my existing setup and often I just look at the source to find out how things are implemented or to checkout whether a new feature is worth updating. It would be great if the online sources (2) and (3) could be updated. Another option would be to move the (4) from bitbucket to github, because github offers full text search in a repository (among other features, like continuous integration or gitter.im chatroom which are all free for an open-source project, see [1] for details). APA formatting and reference questions

Hello, I would like to use ConTeXt foracademic writing this year and am just scratching the surface of its capabilities. My first run at producing a document in APA format resulted in several questions. Below is abrief sample. In this excerpt, the following APA style formatting errors occur: 1. The first reference is cited as “Hartley, M.T. (2013).” There is usually a space separating these initials. Between the M. and T. in this reference. 2. The word “and” is appearing in both parenthetical and in-text citations. When a reference is completely within parentheses, the last author should be separated by the & (Ampersand) character. 3. The last reference has 3 authors and should be written as Koch et al (2014) instead, it replicates the entire list of authors previously cited. I must be missing something obvious in my settings. What changes to this sample need to be made to correct these formatting citation errors? standalone / setuptex on ARM

armhf luatex binary from the context minimals

Hi all, i finally got the context minimals working on my phone. I use GNURoot (Debian Jessie). first-setup.sh works as expected. Only one problem remains. The luatex binary: http://minimals.contextgarden.net/current/bin/luatex/linux-armhf/bin/luatex This is LuaTex, Version 0.98.1 (TeX Live 2017/dev) ignores interword spaces completely. \starttext Test Test\kern 1cm Test \stoptext results in "TestTestTest" in the pdf. I helped myself and copied the luatex binary from the texlive binary archive to my phone. ftp://tug.org/historic/systems/texlive/2016/texlive-20160523-bin.tar.xz But i would like to try out the greatest and latest features of luatex. bug in font rendering?

Hello, I may be doing something wrong but see the difference at the end of the first line in the PDF (produced from CONTEXT) and the corresponding rendering in Chrome. I observe this issue whenever there is a U+08F0 (or U+08F1 or U+08F2). The two sides of this diacritic sign are not joined. The other issue is with small gaps in between some letters and/or bad connection points. See the second and third lines in the PDF. Thanks, MHB

Dotted characters

Hello, I'm preparing a child copybook. I'd like to write a uppercased letter "as is" followed by its shape drawn with dots - something like /\ . / \ . . /____\ ..... / \ . . I guess that some MP "trick(s)" might be used; also, a "simple" font should be used to be drawn dotted, which uses "single drawings" to draw each line of the character. \getscaledglyph for width-only

Hi, I was wondering if there is a way to call \getscaledglyph to scale a glyph only horizontally, leaving the height untouched? Or maybe an alternate command? I can sort of accomplish this with (for example) \scale[sx=0.75,sy=1.0]{}{A}, but that encloses the glyph in an \hbox, which can be problematic. \getscaledglyph doesn't cause me any problems, except that it scales the height too. columnset and placefigure

Dear list, I'm using columnsets to typeset stuff for a conference poster. I can't use paragraphs or columns, because these do not allow to set frames or backgrounds. Currently I do not use the column-spanning features, but I might in the future. The thing is, when I place a figure using `\placefigure` and the column distance is too large (i.e. the columns too narrow), the figure is not placed on spot but flushed to the next page. I'm unsure what the exact value for this threshold is and based on which criteria the figure is flushed. While this is not a problem in a normal document, it is for sure for a poster (I have not seen any multi-page posters yet). Please find below an example to illustrate my problem (with version 2016.05.17 19:20 from TL2016). Windows 10, TeXLive 2016, and grep

Where can I find the applicable documentation for the grep script included in TeXLive on Windows? I.e. the one called with `mtxrun -script grep ...`. In particular I'm interested in knowing which grep options are available and which are not. `man mtx-grep` lists only 4 options (pattern, count, nocomment, and xml). What's the difference between \dontleavehmode and \leavevmode?

Dear list, could someone please explain what is the difference between \dontleavehmode and \leavevmode? Internally, I also stumbled upon \quitvmode. Is this a synonym for \leavevmode? It seems to be primitive. Cheers, Henri

Detecting content out of print/page area ?

Dear all, I was wondering if there were any sort of tool (beyond manual eye inspection) in general sense, either printing some warning in log file, or visually in output document, or even reading pdf file, that would help determining if for a some page there is content that is typeset outside (partially or even worse totally) the print/page area. Hi! look at the output of this (attached) \definemathcommand [D] [nolop] {\mfunction{D}} \starttext Compare $\D f$ with $\mfunction{D}f$. \stoptext In the \D, the D is lowered a bit. I think it should not be, or else I misuse something. If so, how should I define my own operator (I found this example on the wiki). /Mikael

I did try to insert this code where I thought I might help, though must admit that I'm not sure what to do with the argument [frontpart]. In my projectfiles, admittedly rather a mess, there is nothing with the name frontpart. Anyway, with or without this or some other possibly more appropriate argument, nothing changed the behaviour of this, or rather a blockquote in this first chapter, not even surrounding the blockquote itself with \setupinterlinespace[small] ... \setupinterlinespace[reset], as I wrote in my original post. But, while I was writing this reply it occurred to me that maybe there might be some local variant for \setupinterlinespace[small] and, yes, I found \setuplocalinterlinespace[line=4ex] on the ConTeXt wiki and this does the trick. Fonts in same directory.-

Hello! Today I was working perfectly but after an OS update, I started to have some problems with fonts. In particular, I use to put the font files (.ttf) in the same directory where .tex are placed, but now I'm getting this message: simplefonts > font ''avenirnext'' not found but I have not moved the font files. Could you please give some advices to solve this issue? Strange problem with Blockquote

Dear all, I have a small but nasty problem with the book I’m (still) working on. Its 10 chapters contain many Blockquotes, and they all come out as intended except one, in the first, unnumbered, chapter “Introduction". That particular blockquote v]comes out like the others only as far as its width and its fontsize are concerned, but unlike the others it insists on keeping the same interline distance as the main text. Even that would not have been too much of a problem if it had not spoiled the layout by pushing a rather large float off the page, leaving a large gap. This particular chapter is input by means of the Frontmatter file, as is Ch1, which also contains several Blockquotes, that come out OK. When I process this chapter “Introduction" separately with the same setups the blockquote also comes out allright. When, as a test, I input that chapter again, the second time through the Bodymatter, then again it comes out allright (while the blockquote in the real Ch0 keeps its large interline distance). I have tried the following: - add the setup for the blockquote to the Frontmatter file - add the setup for the blockquote also to the Ch0 file itself - add \setupinterlinespace[small] in the text just before the blockquote and \setupinterlinespace[reset] after it. None of this has changed the interline distance of the blockquote one bit. Is there anybody on this list for whom this problem is or sounds familiar and who knows a remedy? If not, which information would I have to give to make a diagnosis possible? (It may be evident that it is impossible to show the problem in an MWE.) Thanks in advance for any help. Using hyphen in math mode

Hi, I was wondering if there is a way to access the hyphen symbol (0x002D) while in math mode? I want to avoid the standard remapping to Unicode minus 0x2212. It would also be workable if I could select the math font without switching to math mode. The problem with an approach like \math{\text{-}} is that it switches the font back to the text font and does not use the math font. I.e, I'm trying to get the true hyphen symbol set in whatever font is currently defined for math mode. Best regards, Brian

placelocalfootnotes breaks center alignment

Dear list, sometimes, one wants to place footnotes in a table which then appear right below the last row. Therefore ConTeXt ships the clever `\start...\stoplocalfootnotes` mechanism. Unfortunately, putting `\placelocalfootnotes` outside of the table breaks the centering of the table itself. For illustration please see the example below. How can I have my table centered while the footnotes are either left-aligned with respect to the left border of the table or left-aligned with respect to the page (whatever is easier)? Vertical space lost (\placefigure[right] before enumeration)

Hi! If I put a float in the right before an enumeration, the "before={\blank[line]}" seem to be lost. Please have a look at the example file below (pdf attached), where * Example 1 is set as I want it, * Example 2 is not (I would like to have a blank line before it, and * Example 3 is set as I want it, but I look for a solution where I do not have to inser the \blank[line] manually. * Example 4 is certainly not what I want. math font fallback for palatino \cal

Dear gang, Using pagella (palatino) for a project here. Unfortunately texgyrepagella-math.otf has a rather unattractive set of \cal caps; schola, termes, bonum etc. all use the same and much better-looking set. So I decided to try and define a palatino math set with the \cal caps from schola (= termes etc.). Succeeded after some trial and error: attached are the positive results. Others may find the experiment useful or even worth wikifying; it's a nice fallback exercise. Maybe there is a better or more up-to-date way to do this: In any case, feel free to critique the attached. pdftex error message in TeXWorks

Tight interline spacing in margin notes ?

Dear all, I use grid to typeset documents, this works all fine in main text, but in margin notes it does not seem that interline spacing is as tight. Is there any way to get tighter interline spacing in margin notes too ? Following simple MWE illustrates the situation \setuplayout[grid=both] \setupmargindata[outer][style=\tf] \starttext Foo\\ {\tfb Foo} Bar \inouter{Foo\\ {\tfb Foo}\\ Bar}Baz\\ Foo \stoptext This is a non sensible MWE where the \tfb here replaces another font with a bit taller letters (Hebrew Lamed to name). I tried \smash around these, which works but wondered if there was some other solution without using non zero height hbox. Also I’d like to avoid to increase the interline spacing if possible. I'm using Tex live 2014 on OpenBSD 5.9 and context version 2014.05.21 22:04. otfinfo -f fbb-Regular.otf reports that it has onum and liga, and it works fine with lualatex. I have tried with a typescript and simplefont (the fbb font is being used in all three cases); see attached examples. Bug in CONTEXT/LuaTeX or just buggy font

Hello, I have a bunch of simple fonts for Arabic/Persian. These fonts lack Latin characters, etc., so I use fallbacks to work with them. I just noticed that \high does not work with them, and have not been able to pinpoint the issue. See the MWE below. \starttypescript [serif][samim][name] \definefontsynonym[Serif][Samim] \stoptypescript \definetypeface [myfont][rm] [serif][samim][default] \setupbodyfont [myfont] \starttext %\definedfont[Samim*arabic] ۱۲۳\high{۴}۵۶. \stoptext I am using Persian digits because the font lacks Latin digits as I mentioned. If I use the \definedfont approach, I don't see the character ۴ (argument of \high) at all. With the typescript approach, the same character *is* typeset but is *not* raised; it appears on the baseline but with smaller size. Any ideas why this is happening? Could it be that some parameters, for instance, \exheight are not properly set/read for this font? Actually, I looked at the non-math fontdimens in syst-fnt.mkiv, and everything except \slantperpoint (expected) and \exheight (awkward) is non-zero. I don't know where \exheight comes from—perhaps from the height of glyph for 'x', which the font lacks—however, \emheight is 12pt, although the font also lacks a glyph for 'm'. Dear all, Combining patterns for french and ancien greek languages, I noticed there are wrong hyphenations at quote char as shown in following MWE. Is this expected behavior by using the patterns= key in such a way ? Wrong parentheses in latest beta

Hi! In the newest version (ConTeXt ver: 2016.08.08 21:28 MKIV beta fmt: 2016.8.9 int: english/english) the document \starttext $(1+1)$ and $\bigl(1+1\bigr)$ and $\Bigl(1+1\Bigr)$. \stoptext compiles to the attached file. For \big and \Big the ( is ) and the ) is (. I think this is a bug. I have not tried other sizes. Best regards, Mikael

Hello, I need to produce a \section with midaligned number and midaligned text bellow the number, like: |<--------- text width ---------->| " I. Section Bla bla ... Unequal width columns

As you can see the left column is smaller than the right side. Dear list, I just documented \headsetupspacing in the wiki. However, due to my stupidity, I created the page http://wiki.contextgarden.net/headsetupspacing rather than http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Command/headsetupspacing Instead of moving the first to the second, I copied over the content with the intent of deleting the first right afterwards. \startsectionlevel broken?

Hello, I'm getting weird output with \startsectionlevel - its parameters are flushed into page. Changing decimals points to Persian ones via font features

Dear list, I want to add a customized font feature to the math font, to automatically change the decimal point (unicode 0x2E) to the Arabic/Farsi version (unicode 0x66B). This will go well with the mapping from Latin digits to Farsi digits (done in a sample with mathdigits fallback). For instance, I want to code in $123.45$ and get a result like ۱۲۳٫۴۵. However, I do not want to simply map 0x2E to 0x66B, because then "full stop" outside a number will also change. In particular, I'd like to have the mapping only when full-stop is preceded and succeeded by a digit. This will, among other things, leave the end-of-equation periods unchanged. Why is that? Can we add font feature to the math font? Are the character codes different? Notice that I could not get it to work, so I commented out the fallback for Persian digits, to make things simpler. To get the proof of concept, I am trying to change period to forward slash (see below). Is the syntax I use for having two features in \defontfontsynonym correct? Actually, I did try with only mathperiod and it does not work, either. Dear ConTeXt maintainers, would it be possible that ConTeXt Standalone for the linux platform had the latest LuaTeX binaries? Besides the update, I think it is important to confirm whether English hyphenation is fixed in the latest binary. Hi, I have two questions: 1) In the metafun manual I found (p 57 in the version I browse) a setting drawpathoptions. I tried with \startMPpage drawpathoptions(withcolor darkred); path p; p:= (0,0)--(1cm,1cm)--(1cm,0)--(0,1cm); draw p; \stopMPpage but the result turned out to be black. Isn't drawpathoptions available anymore, or do I misuse it? 2) If I run the code below \startMPpage drawoptions(withcolor darkred); path p; p:= (0,0)--(1cm,1cm)--(1cm,0)--(0,1cm); draw image ( draw p; draw p xshifted 2cm withcolor darkyellow; ); \stopMPpage everything gets dark red. Can I somehow change the color inside an image after setting a default color with drawoptions? marking in two pass data

Hi all, the example is kind of silly but shows my problem: I use Lua to manipulate data from xml files, and I want to typeset it as natural tables. Is it possible to set a marking within such tables so that it works in page headers? I hit a similar problem some time ago, but I'm not sure I found any good solution for it... Access to Intermediate Document after Pre-processing

Hi all, I am working with a reasonably complex document structure, where I make heavy use of the following constructs \input (to import a number of source files) \if and \newif (to switch between different paragraphs depending on some conditions) \setvariable and \getvariable (to reuse some text in different places) So, does ConTeXt run some sort of pre-processing step that processes all of the above and which results in an intermediate document that is then type-set? And is it possible to only run this pre-processing step and get access to that intermediate document? I am asking as I have some Ruby scripts that take ConTeXt documents and convert it to another format. However, those scripts do not deal with any of the above and rather than implementing the necessary logic to deal with importing of files, conditions and variables, I thought ConTeXt does that already if only I could get access to the resulting intermediate file.
