Footnotes being broken over two pages

Hi there, I've stumbled upon some behaviour that looks like a bug to me. Sometimes longer footnotes are being broken over two pages. Please see the attached picture: As you can see the last footnote on p. 6 is being continued on p. 7. I don't think it's a problem of too many footnote lines on one page as on p. 17 there are more lines and the breaking is in order. The code for all links that I create like this is: \define\NytAsimov{ \goto{ \hyphenatedurl{ https://www.nytimes.com/1992/04/12/business/technology-a-celebration-of-isa… [url(https://www.nytimes.com/1992/04/12/business/technology-a-celebration-of…] (Abrufdatum 12.12.2018)} The line breaking I only did for readability. horizontal headalternatives ignore indentnext

Dear list, If I choose the headalternative to be of horizontal type, e.g. “text”, the head placement will ignore the indentnext option. This can be traced back to the \strc_rendering_stop_placement macro where there is a check \ifconditional\headisdisplay \useindentnextparameter\headparameter \else \ignoreparskip \noindentation % recently added, was a bug \fi If the headalternative is vertical, \headdisplay is true, if it is horizontal, \headdisplay is false. It is easy to see that indentnext is not treated on equal footing for these two, in fact, indentation is generally ignored for horizontal headalternatives. Commenting out \noindentation at least gives indentation in the following paragraph but that is not a proper solution. Below you can find a MWE with the fix from above applied. Try commenting in and out the \noindentation and see what happens to the second paragraph after the heading. Hi, I would like to typeset the runtime information that context displays at the end of typesetting: mkiv lua stats > runtime: 174.639 seconds, 913 processed pages, 913 shipped pages, 5.228 pages/second system | total runtime: 526.583 seconds Is this stored in any environment key? I’ve already figured out how to refer to pages (using “\at[REFERENCE]”), but how is this done with chapters? I’m apparently too simple-minded to understand the manual (and I don’t understand the differences between \reference, \textreference, \in, \about). Robert

em-dash ligature is converted to en-dash in the generic fontloader

As reported on the dev-luatex list --- is converted to an en-dash (instead of em-dash) if there are no spaces around the ---. We could now reproduce the problem also with the generic fontloader: it appears only with mode=node. Dear Hans, In the following example I want to locally set lcgreek=normal but it is not picked up because the attribute is not propagated. When I enter \everymathematics manually it works fine. Is this by design or is this a bug? MWE below. \setupmathematics with stylealternative not working

Hi, It seems that, with the latest beta, the \setupmathematics with stylealternative is not working. I tried \setupbodyfont[lucidaot] \setupmathematics[stylealternative={calligraphic}] \starttext \startTEXpage[offset=3bp] $\mathcal A$ \stopTEXpage \stoptext and got the attached output lcm.png. This is not the curly A I would expect. The one I expect is the one that can be seen on top of page 9 in https://tug.org/store/lucida/lucida-amsmath.pdf. I also noticed that the example file that I have seen earlier on this list, pasted below, does not seem to change anything. Hi All, from an external figure I normally know its width and height in px. But I don't know its exact sizes in pt. When newsizing the figure in a document (by the same width-to-height-ratio), I'll do that as some part of textwidth or textheight, in pt or mm, but not in px, i.e. by means of [width=<some pt>]. Sometimes it would be interesting to know its new height in pt, and viceversa. Is there a variable or something else containing its new size in pt? Regards, Rudolf

A strange request...

Hi all, I am siting with a project of making a “dwarsligger”, you know these books, printed on bible-thin-printing paper, which are about 12 x 8 cm. One opens them while holding them ‘landscape’ with the spine on the top… Now there is of course a little struggle with the page numbering. The reading page consists out of the even page together with the following uneven page. It is easy to print on the uneven page a page number, however this will result in uneven page numbers only throughout the book. My question is, whether there is an algorithm to print page numbers as follows: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 (this is the ordinary numbering) 1 2 3 4 5 (this is the requested numbering) Does someone have an idea how to solve this? Any hints are most appreciated! Willi

Omitting part number in chapter numbers

I would like to have a TOC that looks basically as follows when stripped down to the essentials: 1 Part1 1 Chapter1 2 Chapter2 2 Part2 3 Chapter3 I don't want the part number to be "part" of the chapter number (no 2.1, just 1, for example). This behaviour should apply both to the titles in the text and in the TOC.. But the numbering for chapters is like 1.1, 1.2, and 2.3, which is a good default, but not what I want. Is there any way to omit part number and get only the chapter number displayed? In wiki there is something that is almost suitable, namely setting: numbercommand={\determineheadnumber[chapter]\currentheadnumber\gobbleoneargument}] But this does not work for TOC, returning just zeros (and seems like also an extra zero is spilled on TOC, overall pretty hackish solution). When nothing seemed to work, I also tried to use an ugly macro that uses lua to format the argument #1 in the numbercommand nicely with the help of string functions, but it turned out the actual parameter #1 in numbercommand is something other than just a string with numbers and dots. If someone knows what it is, or how to find out, please point me to the right direction to better understand the system. Mapping TABLE to xtable (module "ntb-to-xtb") doesn't recognize "c" option for columns

xtable and natural tables

Hi list, >From Hans xtable manual: As each cell is basically a \framed and as we need to do two passes over the table, this mechanism is not the fastest but it is some two times faster than the natural tables mechanism, and in most cases can be used instead. Manuals examples are of course short ones, but I understand this mechanism is faster even on tables that do not expand on more than one page. Does this mean, that extreme tables should now be considered as the recommended way to build tables? Are there simple cases, when natural tables should be obviously preferred? Thanks, Damien Thiriet

Weird TABLE split across pages

Hello, a TABLE is split weirdly over two pages: - on the first page (here: page 8): the (repeated) header of the TABLE and the first body row followed by void space, - then (here: on the page 9) the remaining part of the TABLE; - see the sample attached. I'm not able to strip my real case more to make the example "more MINIMAL" - whatever next I delete, the problem disappears. Image of the bad break is attached; so are the source files. Hi all, I played with \definebodyfontenvironment and found the command \showbodyfontenvironment. Experimentally I changed parameters at \definebodyfontenvironment and I am not able to understand the logic of the table generated by the \showbodyfontenvironment. How to configure context command in Emacs

Hello, I hope there are some Emacs users out there. ;-) I can use emacs with context-mode when I start the program like this: . ~/context/tex/setuptex ; emacs & I could not find a way to set this in my emacs init file. Neither of the ways described here worked for me: https://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/ExecPath I set this in .bashrc: if [-f ~/context/tex/setuptex ]; then . ~/context/tex/setuptex fi to always have context available in a shell and in emacs if I start it from bash. Starting Emacs via the start menu of Gnome results in an Emacs that does not know ConTeXt. I found some hints how to source .bashrc in emacs but this only affects the emacs shell not the command calling from within AucTeX. Has anyone found a solution for this? juh

mix two-column and single-column footnotes

Hi, Is it possible to mix two-column and single-column footnotes? Here's my use case. I have two types of footnotes: 1) short one- or two-word terms 2) long descriptions and notes On some pages there are a lot of "short" footnotes which take up a lot of space at the bottom of the page. I'd like to typeset them in 2 or 3 columns. But then the "long" footnotes had better stay in one column. See below for desired input and output. Minion Pro confuses italic correction

Dear list, The Minion Pro font, as distributed with Adobe Reader, confuses the ConTeXt italic correction. Hi all, I found some hints to CSV in the wiki, but they all refer to tables. What are the building block to create business cards from a csv file? Hi, We're entering the TeXLive code freeze period. TL 2019 will ship luatex 1.10 (currently we have 1.09 but that version number will be bumped). After 1.00 this more or less what stock luatex will be from now on. In a few weeks we will post a new current. As previous years it will probably take a few currents before mojca/luigi push it into the tex live repository. Of course serious bugs (show stoppers) will be fixed but no functional changed wil happen. As most users normally update from the garden fixes will happen anyway, but it's nice to have a tl version that works well. After that I will start shuffling around some lua code that can be better organized and as that might lead to (e.g. renaming) issues it's best if users keep a snapshot, although as usual fixes will be asap. On the agenda for later this year are for instance some more font juggling (more for fun), new metapost modules (alan is for instance working on a new graph module), some bidi-layout stuff, some (interfaces to) low level math configuration options (needs thinking). These will happen in the betas but they are unlikely to interfere with regular functionality. If something more drastic happens I'll try not to forget to warn you. We currently have mkii and mkiv, using the rsync based installer. Mkii is frozen for years now, and seldom needs fixes. I have a new installer in the working that uses http (so we can avoid rsyn port limitations that some organizations impose) and that one will be used to experiment with a mkiv only installation (it works ok at my end already, a bit slower initial install but a faster update). For all this to be possible the context garden as well as the build farm are pretty important. CID set missing with plain fontloader

When I run \font\test={name:Georgia} \test abcx \bye with the plain fontloader (similar with luaotfload), and then check in preflight against the pdf/A-2b or pdf/A-3b I get (beside other not relevant complaints) CIDset in subset font is incomplete (font contains glyphs that are not listed) The details say additionally (translated): "CID stream contains *all* CID sets of the embedded font: not true" If I run with context \starttext \font\test={name:Georgia} \test abcx \stoptext I don't get the complain. about the location of subscript of integral sign

Hi, Four days ago, I updated the standalone ConTeXt and found a strange behavior in the integral sign. The number at the bottom is far from the integral sign while the number at the top is OK. I don’t know when it began since I didn’t use \int for a few month. Here is a small sample. In the output, you can see the location of “a” is too far from the integral sign. This is the most comprehensive and up-to-date general manual[…]” Date: September 27, 2013 There used to be SVN access on foundry.supelec.fr/projects/contextman, but apparently it's permanently down. Where is the manual hosted at the moment? Automatic thousands separation in \unit

Hi! I'm wondering if there's a way to have automatic thousands separation in the \unit command? \spaceddigits does that, but it doesn't work inside \unit. And using both would be quite verbose to write. Hi! I was wondering what context considers a “bad” file name and what consequences that might have. Making ConTeXt stop on all or some errors

Hi all, yesterday I asked about where to put color profiles. My problem was that ConTeXt for some unknown reason didn't find the color profiles I downloaded. But most annoying was the fact that I didn't saw the error in the log because ConTeXt only complains about not finding the profile. Is there a way to make ConTeXt stop if it does not find the profile like it stops if I use a unknown command? I want to avoid that we send a pdf without a profile to the print shop, because we overlook a message in the logs. juh

Adjusting interlinespace in a table

Hello all! This may be a really stupid question, but wiki wasn't helpful: Is there a way of adjusting interlinespace in a table? A \setupTABLE command would work as I want to change the line height throughout the table to make it smaller (have the rows closer to each other than in my running text). I don't need to set the cell height or anything like that, I just want to adjust the text inside the cells. I'm fairly certain there's some simple way of doing it... Thanks, Mari

Dear List, A figure near the bottom of the page can narrow the text block on the whole next page. I noticed the problem when typesetting my (next) book. But the book is more a maximal than a minimal example. However, from it I made the minimal example included below that uses no external figures. Figure 2 is the bottom of the page and the paragraph flows to its left with a correspondingly narrower text block. So far, so good. But the text block also narrows for the entirity of page 2 and for the first two lines of page 3. In plainer English, the information saved in the .tuc file can make it so that a valid ConTeXt file doesn't compile merely because of what it contained when it was compiled before. Here is a MIE (minimal illustrative example), on Linux amd64, 2019.01.28 beta: 1. Make the following file: ========== file: testhysteresis.tex =============== \defineblock[foo] \starttext \def\abc{20} \beginfoo Use \abc \endfoo \useblocks[foo] \stoptext ========== stop: testhysteresis.tex =============== 2. Compile it with "context --nonstopmode testhysteresis.tex" (which will work fine). 3. Modify it so that it doesn't define or use \abc (and so that it is still valid): ========== file: testhysteresis.tex =============== \defineblock[foo] \starttext \beginfoo Use \endfoo \useblocks[foo] \stoptext ========== stop: testhysteresis.tex =============== 4. Without deleting testhysteresis.tuc, recompile with "context --nonstopmode testhysteresis.tex". This run fails with the fatal error: tex error > tex error on line 1 in file virtual://block.foo.1: ! Undefined control sequence l.1 Use \abc The cause seems to be that testhysteresis.tuc contains (from the run it step 2 above): utilitydata.structures.blocks.collected={ { ["data"]="Use \\abc", ["index"]=1, ["metadata"]=3, ["references"]={ ["section"]=0, }, }, } 5. Delete testhysteresis.tuc. 6. Now "context --nonstopmode testhysteresis.tex" works fine. One workaround is always to delete the .tuc file before running context. constructing block content partly with lua

Dear List, I've been trying to construct part of a block's content programmatically with Lua. Despite many experiments and much rereading of the cld manual (especially chapter 3 on functions), the following attempt fails for reasons that perplex me. Below is the MNWE (Minimal NonWorking Example). Ahoi, in my current project I must include a bunch of illustrations in my layout, and the text should flow around their irregular shapes (side placement in single text column only). I got the pictures as TIFFs with alpha channel, but of course I can change that. I’m quite sure I remember that it was possible to let text flow around shapes somehow, but I can’t find documentation or a sample. I’d be thankful for hints. problem with non-printing hex 0x0C

I had a problem that kept me busy for a few hours. A \page command had no effect, the text just continued in the pdf. The culprid turned out to be a hex 0x0C, a formfeed character. Once I removed them all was good. It got introduced by extracting the text from a PDF. I realize my files should be "clean" of control characters and ConTexT should (maybe) not be stripping those characters. Then again, they serve no purpose in the document. So... My question: Isn't some more resilience sensible so commands don't break? Or error messages? cheers and thanks for any thoughts. How to query fonts.handlers

Even though I query the kerning from within a paragraph where the kerning is evidently applied I can't seem to get the value stored earlier, see the comment in the MWE. What am I doing wrong? Hello, This is perhaps *related* to what Alan Bowen reported. Not the same, since I don't get compilation errors. Here's a MWE. The right footer is placed over the left footer. 2. There's no problem if I replace the RTL text of right footer with an LTR text. 3. Left footer's text does not get proper RTL treatment. Perhaps *this* is the change of behavior introduced in the past year. My guess is that RTLed footers are moved to the other side. 4. If I use bidi=local or bidi=on in the preamble, RTL treatment is applied to neither footer. I can't seem to turn on RTL via setupdirections inside the (left) footer. How does one do that? What is current support of ePub, will it export pictures automatically? 2. The latest beta complains and stops when I try to process a book that has \setupdirections[bidi=global, method=one] for several, scattered phrases in Arabic and Hebrew (which I do not read). It works, however, when I set method=two or method=three. What is the difference between these methods and, am I right that the output will be the same if I switch to method two or three? Alan

In another thread, Hans had pointed me to the examples of blocks in the test suite. That leads to my following two questions before I revise the associated wiki page: 1. The wiki page about the test suite <https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Test_suite> contains dead links to <https://foundry.supelec.fr/projects/contexttest> for the project homepage and to <https://foundry.supelec.fr/mail/?group_id=21> for the mailing list. Are those now officially dead; or, more directly stated, would there be any objections if I clean up that wiki page to remove those dead links? 2. I did find the (a?) test suite on the PRAGMA site at <http://www.pragma-ade.nl/download-1.htm> as a 7zip file. Where to put icc color profiles

Can I put color profiles in the working folder of my project. And how do I access them with setupbackend? Restarting with different engine fails

Dear list, ConTeXt allows to select the engine in the preamble with a “magic comment”. The preamble is parsed and the engine restarted with new options. The following MWE fails in the latest beta % engine=luajittex \starttext Fail \stoptext with the error message texmf-context/scripts/context/lua/mtx-context.lua:427: attempt to call a nil value (global 'restart') If I uncomment the restart function and its helpers around line 110 it works. getting ConTeXt results back to Lua (for typesetting solutions at end of document)

Dear List, I'm trying to have problem solutions automatically collected, each with its corresponding problem number, e.g. 2.3, and then typeset at the end of a document. Thus, I imagine something like \startproblem{A problem title} % Problem 1.1 A question \startsolution An answer \stopsolution \stopproblem And then the solution(s) would appear at the end (with the "1.1" remembered from when the problem was typeset): Solution to Problem 1.1. An answer It seems that buffers are the way to do this. But I cannot quite get the automatic numbering to work. The delayed evaluation and information passing between lua and ConTeXt has me confused and tangled in a knot. Below is a minimal almost-working example. The issue is in the line {\ctxlua{userdata.addTempToBuffer('#1', [==[\getnumber[problem]]==])}} which ends up putting the verbatim string "\getnumber[problem]" into the temp buffer, rather than the typeset result, which would be something like 1.1 or 1.2. I've read the cld-mkiv.pdf manual, but I must be missing a simple solution to getting ConTeXt to send back the result of \getnumber[problem]. I've also tried the analogous context.getnumber({"problem"}), though without success. Does anyone see what I am missing? Headings vs. enumerations

I have a document that contains a numbered enumeration that spans 107 pages - it's a legal document where \items are clauses. I would like to put level one of the enumeration in a table of contents. I have read the available documentation but I am not clear whether I should make level one headers, whether I can utilise the \starthead in \startitemize or whether I can create a list from the level one headings to create the table of contents. How is best to tackle this problem? New logo proposal

Dear ConTeXt users and developers, I want to submit a new ConTeXt logo to you (link to GitLab project): https://gitlab.com/schickele/new-context-logo I made this logo in February 2018. At the time, I was planning to do some video tutorials on ConTeXt (still work in progress), and I wanted a nice looking visual clue for the thumbnails. Recently, I made a few minor tweaks and thought it would be the right time to put it out there. The logo comes in two different layouts (hexagonal and horizontal), and each layout comes in two color variations (multicolored and blue). The hexagonal layout is borrowed from the unofficial ConTeXt logo that has been around for some time. I like the idea of a clean geometrical form, and the hexagon reminds me of chemistry formulas -- one of the many application fields of ConTeXt. The seven colors have mainly an esthetic purpose. They also denote the flexibility of ConTeXt. I've added a monochromatic blue version because shiny, saturated colors are not suitable for every case, and blue is strongly associated with ConTeXt to me. Blue is also a reminder of Mark IV and LuaTeX. The letters are set in Din17 EF, which I've licensed. I like its simple shapes combined with a round and soft touch. It avoids consciously the very connoted Computer Modern and can be seen as a modernized and also Europeanized interpretation of the TeX tradition. This logo is just a humble proposal. Perhaps it is of some use to someone. It could also make someone else want to create and share his or her logo -- that would be great. I'm using ConTeXt since 2006/07 for almost everything that contains text: letters, presentations, invitations, résumés, certificates, manuals, reports, flyers, university papers, book typesetting, exercise sheets, song sheets, and I'm still amazed by how powerful, flexible and reliable it is. Hello again, as many critics go towards "I don't see any coherence" or "to me it's just a random bunch of colored letters" or "it's hard to read the word CONTEXT", some afterthoughts in that regard (difficulty, randomness). Personally, I like visual material that catches my attention, but does not give all away at first glance. For example a good poster or book cover. It invites me to spend time on it. And I don't have the feeling that the designer thinks I'm stupid. ConTeXt is quite sophisticated, its logo can also be a little bit more complicated than your average sportswear brand. Any color choice is arbitrary to some extend. The colors I've used cover the entire hue range and are at equal distance apart (common in multicolored designs). This denotes to me not only the flexibility, and the fun of using it, but also the comprehensiveness of ConTeXt. Not only can you use ConTeXt in very different situations, you can use it in every situation (that requires typesetting). My 2c! Greetings, Paul

Would be worth a try. @Floris vM: I'm glad that my nemesis on the matter felt himself challenged to make his own proposal. While I think it's too minimalistic (only insiders know what 'CTX' stands for), I like your idea of the subscript 'T'. Your concept with the crosses reminded me of the visual identity of Amsterdam. I do not see, however, how it reflects better "typesetting beautiful readable typography". And it lacks some colors ,-) Greetings! Paul

Hello, thanks for your feedback. Again, I don't want to impose or dismiss anything. I wanted to share this because I believed somebody else in the ConTeXt community could be interested. @Taco: Actually, I stumbled upon the nice ConTeXt group logo recently and was wondering who made it. To answer your questions: I tried to avoid any logic or rainbow-type color sequence to create something more unique. The first square had to be in blue and the middle area in a warm color. (I played around a lot with the color combinations.) Regarding the outside circle: I tried different variations, with and without a surrounding circle or round background, with and without rounded squares, and was most pleased with this solution. It's true, "clean and simple" can easily lead to "too informal". @Clyde J: Valid point. I use the logotype with the subscript 'E' whenever I can in inline text. @Floris vM: Font, spacing, overall appealingness. No Helvetica/Nimbus Sans, which has less meaning to me for ConTeXt than a DIN-ish/technical one. Colors are fun. If you don't see it this way, it's perfectly fine. @Alan B: I've uploaded MetaPost files of the main version. Yes, the horizontal version is not very exciting nor very TeX-aware. I made this one primarily because I wanted something small for a little GUI script. Now I think it's just superfluous. Greetings! Paul

Bidi-related register problem

Recent betas have introduced a bidi-related problem with register processing. In the following example, compilation generates a recoverable error when register processing has to trim an entry to fit maxwidth.
