Dear list, I have the following sample: \setupinteractionscreen[option=max] \starttext \startTEXpage \null \stopTEXpage \stoptext LMTX doesn’t include full page. MkIV compiles it fine. SVG fonts not working properly

The following examples doesn't work as expected: \definefontfeature[emojis][default,color:svg][script=latn,language=dflt] \definefont[gilbert][file:Gilbert-ColorBoldPreview5*emojis @ 13bp] \starttext {\gilbert abcdefghijklmnpqrstuvwxyz} \stoptext Letters are displayed correctly, but ascenders and descenders don't. It looks like characters are inserted like images rather than actual characters. Am I missing something? Thank you in advance. Jairo :)

Making text disappear depending on mode

Hello, I’m currently writing an article for „Die TeXnische Komödie“ and discovers that my code is not working. When the mode „change“ is set, the text should appear with a red line on the side, that part is working. When the mode is not set, it should disappear, that’s the part that is not working. Is old-multicolumns module still supported?

Hi guys, I have updated to the mtx-context to the current version: 2021.02.02 15:49 and startcolumns is throwing errors about not defined (>> \startcolumns[n=2]) I have found m-old-multicolumns.mkiv in the ConTeXt directory. Not sure if it is deprecated, but if yes, my motivation to use it was because some default length registers have different values so there is a bigger space before and after column. Forcing indentation on item groups

Hi list. I have the following example: \setupindenting[yes,medium] \starttext \startitemize[n,text][stopper=,lefttext=(,righttext=)] \startitem A\stopitem \startitem B\stopitem \startitem C\stopitem \stopitemize \stoptext The item group doesn't follow indentation. Adding \leavevmode only has effect on the first line, and only insert a spurious space from the second item on. How would I solve this? To be clear, I want indenting before numbers, i.e. <indent>(1), not (1)<indent>. Thanks beforehand. Jairo

lmtx-20210118 | Corruption with rotated floats

List members, I've found that recent versions of LMTX seem to have broken table and figure floats using rotation. Lmtx-20210118 with for example: \placetable[here,90] results in the trashing of all subsequent body text in the PDF. This can be corrected with something such as: \placetable[here] ... \framed[orientation=90] (although one looses the ability to rotate the title of the table). The last really stable version of LMTX, which I'm finding that I'm constantly returning to as my default, is lmtx-20200920. This error has been occurring for some time now, and unfortunately, while I would like to keep up the recent releases of LMTX, it is essential that I should be able to rotate tables and images. Does anyone know of a fix. font fallback hook (alphabet suspects)

Hello to everybody! Warning: 50 % of Greek glyphs in MWE, so they might be randomized :) Is there any hook in the font fallback? There are some Greek, Hebrew, etc. words used in the text. While proofreading, the editor would like to check these words separately (glyphs from different alphabets, unusual symbols, ...), so I'd like to typeset the warning (margin note), where these words are located. To avoid usual markup \greek{ὀρφανῖος} it could be useful to typeset a margin note whenever the defined fallback is called. The unfamiliar symbols could be in the main font and no fallback would be called then (one can still define the fallback with the main font as in the MWE, bold used for the illustration), but you might have a better ideas how to point out these suspects. The margin note is ment for searching PDF where one cannot search for color (basic viewer), which could be the other approach (also visible in print). I think, the color could be achieved with finalizers. One should also think of hyphenation and l2r/r2l direction, so in the end the usual approach might be the best way. You might use other approaches, how to deal with suspects of this type. Below the MWE for font fallbacks with distribution fonts. Not critical, just looking for ideas. Hi all, a complex file with a metafun background does not compile anymore with lmtx. It compiles fine with mkiv. Compilation breaks off after 10 pages (maybe that's significant) with this message: pages > flushing realpage 10, userpage 10, subpage 10 mtx-context | fatal error: return code: 139 What is code: 139? Hi, According to https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Command/startTEXpage it "starts a page that fits its contents exactly". But it seems, that part of the content is cropped here: \startTEXpage X \hskip20cm X \stopTEXpage No problem with 10cm instead of 20cm... Is this a bug or expected behaviour? TIA, -- Peter

Hi--- I have a number of included figures that work in 20200920 but not in the current 20210124 version. Continue, and I'll return the second argument (see above) as the result of theoperation. metafun > log > metapost > log > label = "Parent Root Namespace", ]; ; >From triaging, it looks like the "boxrow.mp" file isn't being input by the current version from within the MPinclusions block associated with the MPinstance; the error appears to be spurious as a result of make_BoxRow not being defined and doesn't occur in the old version where the file is input. "boxrow.mp" is not in the same directory as the document but is in the configured through the usepath/usesubpath interface from an environment file. I can put together and share a runnable MWE set of files if this information is not complete enough to identify the problem. Inline Fractions

Recently inline fractions stopped working correctly. For example symbol spacing, sub-/superscripts, the line is too short,... You can see the 3 named problems and how they sometimes appear and sometimes not in this two fractions: \starttext $\frac{\sin(x)}{16 \pi \epsilon_0 c^2 m_e^2} \frac{\sin(x)}{\epsilon_0}$ \stoptext Compare the output between the current LMTX version with some old version. I have finally gotten around to upgrading my ConTeXt installation to LTMX and found that the \starbreak command in the "fancybreak" module no longer works. \usemodule[fancybreak] \starttext \input ward \starbreak \input ward \stoptext Have I missed something about the LTMX changes? Hans and all, Preparing my standard environments for future strict enforcement of overloading prevention, I have run into one issue. I had been using the following construction to change the formatting of URLs: \let\OrigHyphenatedurl\hyphenatedurl \starttexdefinition hyphenatedurl #URL \begingroup \URLfont\OrigHyphenatedurl{#URL} \endgroup \stoptexdefinition This results in the following warning about overloading \hyphenatedurl: csname overload > warning, protection level 3, control sequence 'hyphenatedurl', properties 'permanent protected', file 'env_layout.mkvi', line 1 I have tried adding \overloaded to indicate the intentional overloading, but \overloaded cannot be used with \starttexdefinition, so I rewrote it as: \let\OrigHyphenatedurl\hyphenatedurl \overloaded\define[1]\hyphenatedurl{% \begingroup% \URLfont\OrigHyphenatedurl{#1}% \endgroup}% but that (and also with \overloaded\def\hyphenatedurl#1...) gives the same (except for the line number) warning: csname overload > warning, protection level 3, control sequence 'hyphenatedurl', properties 'permanent protected', file 'env_layout.mkvi', line 822 So, what is the proper way to indicate intentional overloading? Hello everyone, I'm using ConTeXt (ver: 2020.09.20 23:02 LMTX) and have to have conditional page headers based on specific content criteria. To achive this I'd like to get some global variables in TeX, change their values several times throughout the document and have my macro for the header read them and act accordingly (like skip the header at all, change a color, etc). As a basis for this I established the following pattern in an iolated test case: \def\setHeaderVar[#1]{ \doassign[header][myvar=#1] \message{setHEADER: '#1'} } \def\getHeaderVar{\headermyvar} \setupheadertexts[\setups{page:header}] \startsetups page:header HEADER: myvar=\getHeaderVar \stopsetups \starttext \setHeaderVar[initval] page: 1 \page \setHeaderVar[aaaaa] page: 2 \page \setHeaderVar[bbbbb] page: 3 \page \setHeaderVar[cccc] page: 4 \page \setHeaderVar[] page: 5 \stoptext This works as expected and the header-macro prints the updated value. But when I put the same pattern in my big environment-file, I can see the variable being updated with different values (console), but the header always puts out just the variable's initial value - so the variable is read but it's updates aren't picked up by the header macro. Peeking into console, log & tuc didn't raise any idea yet as to what is going wrong... Any idea what is happening and how I can fix this? Any hints on how I can track this down? Hi, I uploaded a new lmtx. I'm still playing a bit with metafonts so there are two new files context --global meta-imp-demo.mkxl context --global meta-imp-clock.mkxl Both show a bit. The question is, do we need / want more like this? What kind of interfaces are best? It's mostly about used defined symbols that are proper characters and efficiently used. Hans PS. Hi, There's a new lmtx upload with a few fixes in publication lists (TS made some tests). For those who like fonts, there is an update of the punk font (the mkiv variants dates from 2008 which is ancient on a software timeline). You can run meta-imp-punk.mkxl to get an idea. There's also a typescript: type-imp-punk.mkxl one can create different versions and play with random variants and such. The question is: do we need more metapost font magic and infrastructure? running head for TOC

I have a very long Table of Contents (runs across five pages) and the author would like the running head on recto pages for this to be 'Table of Contents'. I am using the following to create the TOC head: \definehead [tochead] [title] \starttochead[title={Table of Contents}] \setupheader[state=start] \placecombinedlist[content] \stoptochead And I use the following to set up the headertexts for the book as a whole: \setupheadertexts [{\hfill\getmarking[chapter]\hfill}][] %recto pages [{\hfill\documentvariable{metadata:title}\hfill}][] %verso pages The problem is that I am unable to get 'Table of Contents' as a running head for the two recto pages where I need it. I realise I need to get 'tochead' recognised somehow for this. If I set up a separate \setupheadertexts [{\hfill\getmarking[tochead]\hfill}][] then I end up with 'Table of Contents as the running head on all recto pages, which I don't want. Can anyone suggest how can I get 'Table of Contents' as the running head just for the two recto pages of a five page TOC? Julian

3 questions about xtables after reading manuals

I've been trying out xtables and reading the manual, some things I can't find how to do (or if it's possible on xtables): 1. How to align whole columns. It seems I have to add [align=middle] to each cell I want to have centered in a raggedright aligned table. In tabulate you can use [|l|c|] to do this, is it possible in xtables? Seems weird if it's not. Or did I miss something? 2. I know how to use [option=stretch] to fill the textwidth, but can I make specific columns "tight", so they don't get stretched beyond their content? 3. When I use [option=tight] sometimes columns are narrowed so much as to break a line of 4 or 5 words. LMTX isn't typesetting math correctly with Pagella

Hi, I've been having some trouble with ConTeXt not typesetting math correctly when using the Pagella font (I do not know if the same issue occurs with other fonts as I haven't tested them). If I compile with LMTX, the spacing between letters becomes very small so that when I type "|f|", for example, the second "|" intersects the f and looks rather ugly. However, compiling with the --luatex switch fixes these issues and the math looks nice again. Can anybody else replicate this issue, and does anybody know why it is happening? I Was checking out math-frc.mkiv to learn stuff, and found out that at the end of that file, from line 673, there is a couple commented out macros to generate "nice fractions'', i.e.: ½ (as in the LaTeX package nicefrac). Why has this code been commented out? Hi, I have some troubles with understanding metafun's macro mechanism. Given this MWE: \starttext \startMPpage vardef Test (expr ab,cd)= %numeric ab; %numeric cd; draw unitsquare scaled 10 xshifted ab; draw unitsquare scaled 10 yshifted cd; enddef; Test (50,100); \stopMPpage \stoptext Uncommenting the two declarations makes me run intro a silent error. I was lucky enough yesterday to get an explicit error message with a more complex macro. It made me figure out where my problems came from. So here are my two questions: - Why shouldn't we tell metafun if expr is a path, a pair or so on? - Would it be possible to issue an error message each time this wrong declaration is made? Dear Damien Thiriet, If you change ‘vardef’ to ‘def’, you will get the figure. There is a difference between ‘vardef’ and ‘def’. AFAIK, vardef returns the value of the last statement in the macro. Please see the examples in Metafun manual from page 32 ~ . I hope that you find your answer there. I am sorry that I am not good enough to explain the variables. Floating object in text - Spacing

There is space to the top, and I dont want it to be there. On the bottom there is no spacing. I would expect it to be evenly distributed. But the spacing on the top will always be there. Dear list, I have already reported this before (https://mailman.ntg.nl/pipermail/ntg-context/2020/099636.html) I have the following sample: \setupinteractionscreen [width=fit] \starttext \null \stoptext Mediabox is fine: [ 0 0 595.2756 841.8898 ] But cropbox and trimbox contain extra width: [ 0 0 741.4331 841.8898 ] This is caused by \setupinteractionscreen[width=fit]. Generating booklets from documents with the values above leads to wrong output. Could anyone explain me what is wrong here? Sorry, but I don’t know what I may be missing. I’m experiencing two issues: 1. Item number is placed at the bottom of the xtable. 2. There is an added horizontal space, so that the xtable has a minimal indentation that the first item doesn’t have. (In my real document, this horizontal space is huge.) Hi, I uploaded a new lmtx. Nothing spectacular as I'm still playign with compact font support (as explained in previous mails). Most seem to work now. Math blackboard (bug?)

To write blackboard math, the syntax was $\blackboard{N}$ , but now this also makes the rest of the text blackboard. So one has to use ${\blackboard N}$ . Is this indented? (the old way is a bit easier to use) Secondly, I want to address the blackboard font. Try out \starttext ${\blackboard NR}$ \stoptext This looks different then in the past. It doesn't have serifs. It looks like the wrong font, like sans. Is this a bug? To me it looks awful, honestly. It doesn't fit the rest of the math font at all. Best regards Johann

Hi there, I noticed that Math align is not working properly. In particular I mean the alignment. Hi It's been a long time, since a solution for the 'module wrapping error' in tikz has been proposed here in the list: https://mailman.ntg.nl/pipermail/ntg-context/2017/090404.html Since July a fix has been published: https://github.com/pgf-tikz/pgf/commit/9b24e5cdb8246b1075d02c02c75ff8bcac64… A few days ago the release containing the fix was released. On contextgarden the manual under modules/t-tikz/doc/generic/pgf shows the current version 3.1.8b, but the source doesn't include the fix. I compared the source on context-garden (rsync:// contextgarden.net/minimals/current/modules/) with the zip ( https://github.com/pgf-tikz/pgf/archive/3.1.8b.zip) In the zip file the fix is included, so I'm puzzled... Is there a synchronisation-problem? Just wanted to mention it. It's not crucial. Thanks Christian

Size problems in fencing

The first problem is with sizes of nested fences, the second one with the size of lucida fences. The test file is pasted below. Hi everyone. The following example works fine with MkIV, but fails with latest LMTX. To be specific, the lam-alif ligature isn't working. Compile with both to see differences. LuaTeX and PDF.js

Hello, I compared latest ConTeXt standalone (LuaTeX 2.08) against TeX Live 2020 (LuaTeX 1.12). The produced PDFs are: https://miletic.net/lipsum-112.pdf https://miletic.net/lipsum-208.pdf Viewing them with Evince (and I assume Adobe Reader, I don't have it at hand to test) shows only minor differences in (horizontal) character spacing, which I would expect; the text looks reasonably good either way. However, viewing them with PDF.js shows a large difference: https://miletic.net/lipsum-pdfjs-112.png https://miletic.net/lipsum-pdfjs-208.png As you can observe, b, m, n, p, and r (and possibly others) are moved slightly above other letters. I'm wondering if further progress has been made in Mk IV on styling parts of an index (register) entry? I have followed the explanation on the wiki, but do not seem to be able to achieve what I need. And what I need is to be able to italicise entries that refer to newspaper names, e.g. The Observer MWE \defineregister[myindex] \defineprocessor[style][style=italic] \starttext In \myindex{style->Observer, The} {\em The Observer} of 31 July 2018 \stoptext The only result I am getting is: ->Observer, The 223 But what I want is /Observer, The/ (in other words, in italics). Clearly I am doing something wrong, or not enough, or... maybe there is another way to achieve waht I need? Julian

Hello all, What I thought should be a simple conversion escapes me. I have a reference (created originally via a label defined by \definelabel) that, when referenced as *\in[label]* or *\ref[number][label]* displays a number, and that is how I normally use it. However, I want to display it in one instance as a Roman numeral. *\**Romannumerals{\in[label]}* complains that it is not being fed a number. How can I display the label number in Roman number format in this one instance? -- Rik

Continued chapter numbers

I need chapter numbers to continue sequentially across several parts. At the moment, when Part 2 begins, it begins with Chapter 1 once more, while it should be (in continued sequence) Chapter 4. I know that I can achieve the desired result by including ownnumber=4, so: \startchapter[title={My chapter title},ownnumber=4] will do that for me. But this means I have to do it for every chapter that follows (there are 11 more!). Perhaps there is a single way to get the result I want in the preamble with \setuphead[chapter] or similar. I have searched the wiki but it is not easy to find an answer to this. Can anyone point me to where, in the wiki, I can find a simple way to ensure sequential chapter numbers? Julian

Hi, A new version has been uploaded. This one has: \enableexperiments[fonts.compact] for the brave to test. As a reminder, as this has been around for a while now, if you really want to stress your test, run with (top of file): \overloadmode 4 % error \overloadmode 3 % warning in order to see if you (re)define primitives, core functionality, instances and whatever can lead to conflicts. There are still some commands to be tagged (and for some the category might change) but it's a bit of a tedious job. Btw, for metafun the warnings are enabled by default (for now), but users might have noticed that already. I don't know if that's added by your mail client or if that's actually in your code. If it's also in the code: Context doesn't like it. The NO-BREAK SPACEs have to go. Second, you have a space (new line) after “bodypartlabel=part”. Add a comma, percent sign or move the closing bracket after the word “part”. Marco

Appearance of ticks and grids with ConTeXt metapost graph module

Dear list, Thanks to Hans, I am now able to use the ConTeXt graph module with LMTX. However, I noticed that the tick/grid labels are drawn with the same parameters as the tick/grid marks. For example grid.bot("@d", 1) withcolor red; will draw the grid line AND "1" in red. The original metapost graph module doesn't apply drawing instructions to the label. That seems a better choice as you usually don't want to apply special effect on the labels. If you really want to draw the label with specific parameters you can write, for example, grid.bot(image(draw textext(1) withcolor blue;), 1) withcolor red; and get red lines and blue labels. With the ConTeXt version, both line and label would be red! What do you think about reverting to the original metapost behavior? Hi, Unfortunately, the following MNWE results in an error when compiled with the latest version of ConTeXt LMTX: \setuptagging[state=start] \definemathmatrix[mymatrix][left={\left(},right={\right)}] \starttext \startformula \startmymatrix \NC A \NC B \NR \stopmymatrix \stopformula \stoptext Omitting "\setuptagging[state=start]" removes the error. Part label and chapter numbers

This is a Mark IV issue rather than LMTX, and while it is almost certainly simple enough, I seem to have got myself confused and am not getting the results I need. essentially I am dealing with a book that is divided into parts and chapter, but the parts need to be called 'Section' not 'Part', and the Chapter numbers need to be words and sequential throughout the book, not restarting at each part/section. Issue 1: Parts need to be called 'Section' (Section 1, section 2 etc.). I thought I could achieve this with: \setuphead [part] [ placehead=yes, bodypartlabel=section, ] but then I just get the number 1, 2, not Section 1, Section 2 Of course, if I write bodypartlabel=part, then I do get Part 1, Part 2, etc. How do I achieve 'Section' rather than 'Part'? Issue 2: While the above 'sections' are numbered in arabic numbers, Chapters are meant to be in words. I thought I could do it with \setuphead [chapter] [deepnumbercommand=\convertnumber{words}] but this throws an error. How do I achieve this? I want Chapter One, not Chapter 1.1 Issue 3 might already be solved once I resolve Issue 2! But given that I have parts, the chapters at the moment come out as Chapter 1.1... Chapter 2.1 etc. and I simply want Chapter One, Chapter Two and so on, sequentially throughout the book. I thought I might be able to do it with something like \setuphead[section-2][bodypartconversion=Characters] |But that doesn't work. Any thoughts? Julian |

Hi Denis. SILE seems interesting, aslo Patoline. However, I think both of these are very immature, and I feel somewhat puzzled by the authors of SILE when they say that you can't do grid typesetting on TeX without horrible hacks, blatantly ignoring ConTeXt's achievements on the matter. If you want to check an alternative typesetting system, I would tell you to not look forward but backwards: groff/troff are alive and well, are very mature, and you can find a lot of documentation and tutorials, even a subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/groff/. SILE typesetter and other projects

Hi I just came across the SILE typesetter (https://sile-typesetter.org) which looks quite interesting and somehow similar to ConTeXt in some ways (e.g. lua), apart from the fact that it does not use TeX at all. ;-) Another project seems to be Patoline. Just out of curiosity: Has anyone some experience with these tools? Best Denis

Dear List, I have used TikZ and pgfplots for a few years and I am considering switching to metapost/metafun which appears more efficient with LMTX. I have already designed several figures with metapost/metafun and some with the help of metaobj and I am fully satisfied with the result. I am now trying to draw graphs with the metapost graph module, but I haven't been integrated to my ConTeXt LMTX document. Hi, I'm playing with future font trickery and as a consequence touching some low level font code. Now, of course we want to be compatible but it might be that I mess up something the process. At some point I'll do a more drastic split in the code paths (because when we use these new tricks we can drop/bypass some code). Anyway, one of these days I'll do the usual update so consider this a warning (invitation) to make a opy of the current tree so that we can see where things differ: for text as well as math. There can eb subtle differences due to calculations and rounding in different places (just different concepts). A teaser (mostly for MF whih probably runs the most demanding jobs): The luametatex manual has 290 pages and loads quite some fonts (half a dozen bodyfont setups in order to demo some things with different fonts). old mechanism: 10.8 sec, 292M lua, 99M tex, 158 instances new mechanism: 9.5 sec, 149M lua, 35M tex, 30 instances Where the new mechanmism uses: \enableexperiments[fonts.compact] (not yet in current lmtx). The new mechanism delays scaling and does it on the fly (which means more work for the engine and also means that some of the context font and lua magic has to follow). The added code actually makes the old one runs a bit slower, so the gain is a bit less than indicated (say, between 5-10% runtime on *this* document but definitely the mem saving remains). Of course in practice most documents are not that demanding but we'll see. (As mentioned before, it might have some positive impact on cjk usage). Also, if we follow this route, some code can be optimized (which compared to mkiv, but that is more in the small nmumbers because it is already optimized.) Text editor support via Digestif

Hi all, I have worked a bit on ConTeXt support in the Digestif language server [1], and I think it's pretty usable by this point, so I would like to invite everyone to check it out. Feedback is welcome. Digestif plugs into any editor that support the Language Server Protocol, and provides the usual IDE features: completion (of commands, keyword arguments, references, citations), go to definition, find references, document outline, etc. Among the fancier features is fuzzy-matching, so you can, say, find a citation by typing parts of the title or author names (and get away with using meaningless BibTeX identifiers). The newest (git) version reads the ConTeXt interface files at runtime, so it should be pretty accurate, and also work with third-party packages. It would be cool to also have some integrated documentation, but it looks like ConTeXt (or TeX in general) doesn't have anything of help in this direction currently, right? Another nice thing is that Digestif is a Lua program, and can run on the LuaTeX interpreter with no extra dependencies. On the other hand, I didn't get the change to test it on Windows or editors other than Emacs, although both things should work with minimal adjustments. Let me know if you have any issues. Ducks in ConTeXt

Hi everyone! I've recently ported TikZducks to ConTeXt and finally removed TIkZ along the way. So a new module was created. The module is called "metaducks" (lol) and it's essentially a \useMPgraphic{...} with a lot of options, most of them ported from TikZducks. For those not familiar with the package, it draws customized rubber ducks :) I want to include some more, so I'll gladly read any feedback, recommendations and suggestions. Eventually I want it to be a module on its own. Hello, tried to install lmtx (Debian Sid) from scratch, did: * wipe the texmf-cache directory * mtx-install | - run: mtxrun --generate * mtx-install | - run: context --make but still getting: [...] languages > language 'en' is active runtime error : input file './t.tex' is not found, quitting mtx-context | fatal error: return code: 256 Any hint? drop shadows with metapost/ metafun

Which process would you advice to add « drop shadows » to any kind of metafun / metapost figures like: picture p; p := textext("MetaPost is fun!") shifted (10cm,10cm); My current understanding of the required steps : 1- fill p with the shadow color 2- write it to an external metapost file (with savebuffer ?) ready for png export (outputformat := "png »;) 3- with lua, os.execute, and imagemagick prepare the shadow - extent the png file with a transparent background, to have room for blurring - blur it 4- import this png in context / Metapost (externalfigure), and center it with p figure 5- shift it according to the desired shadows distance and angle 6- apply the initial bounding box of p to the shadow, draw the shadow, draw the p picture Actually, all this seems long and tedious, and contrasts with the already existing links between MetaPost / MetaFun and cairo + libpng.
