floats pb in a list

Hi contexers, I try writing step by step howtos for Autocad courses. I've borrowed (one more time) Hans example code written around p83 in cont-eni.pdf for combined items, and rename definitions. I'm unable to get correct float placement in a such list, even with small figures. On each new page, the float move towards topleft, above it's "anchor". Hi, Recently I've installed Gerben Wierda's teTeX distributon incl. ConTeXt on my iMac (Macos X, 10.3.6). Now I'm trying to learn ConTeXt. I'm marking up my documents in TeXShop, version 1.34. I can typeset small ConTeXt documents and generate PDF-files as long as the type setting commands are in English. bookmarks problems

Salvete, I have two problems with bookmarks: - Preview.App does display the list of bookmarks, but they do not work. The same file has no such problems in Adobe. (There are files with bookmarks that work ok in Preview.App, such as the Adobe JavaScript reference.) - I fail to provide a bookmark different from a chapter title, if that title is not followed by text, but directly by a \section command. Hi all. I want to use XML, but in a non-doctrinaire way: I much prefer TeX formula writing to mathml by hand. I looked at xtag-mml, and the \defineXMLenvironment [formula] looked like just what I wanted. However, when trying it, the XML catcode regime was still in effect, and the backslashes were printed, and didn't act as escapes. Am I missing something in the correct usage, or is support "incomplete"? At a loss how to proceed

All, Lately, I've had a number of discussions with the director of disabled student services at our school regarding document preparation for the visually impaired. As a result of these discussions, I am a bit lost as how to proceed with the preparation of mathematics for the web and documents for my course content. I've paid a little attention to the develoment of MathML, but I've always said "Who wants to code like that?" whenever I look at examples. However, today I found: http://www.dessci.com/en/company/press/releases/040722.htm I now realize that software that reads web pages aloud it pretty important. But how do I, in my limited time, prepare documents for multiple purposes? Can I use Context to support all of our students at our school? Just how do I proceed? At a loss.

Division bug in \doMPconcat (supp-pdf.tex)

I encountered a problem with supp-pdf when I tried to rewrite Knuths "dangerous bend" as a MetaPost figure. Very little change was required to get a good picture, but the "reverse dangerous bend" (obtained by merely reflecting the currentpicture" produced a quite grotesquely distorted picture. I tracked this down to the method used to divide by the determinant of the scaling matrix in \doMPconcat. The division code is the following: \ifdim\dimen16=\onepoint \else \ifdim\dimen16>\MPconcatfactor \onepoint \relax \doMPreducedimen16 \divide \dimen18 \dimen16 \doMPexpanddimen18 \divide \dimen12 \dimen16 \doMPexpanddimen12 \else \divide \dimen18 \dimen16 \doMPexpanddimen18 \doMPexpanddimen18 \divide \dimen12 \dimen16 \doMPexpanddimen12 \doMPexpanddimen12 \fi \fi In the reverse dangerous bend symbol \dimen16 (the determinant in question) is -1 and \MPconcatfactor is 256, so the else part is taken. The division is integer division, so the accuracy (after the two \doMPexpanddimen) is +/- 1pt. (Theoretically, the determinant is 1, but with only 5 decimal accuracy, the same branch is taken.) Also the \if tests above don't take the sign of \dimen16 into account. There is a lesser problem with multiplication when numbers are less than around 1pt. The pre-division by 256 (\doMPreducedimen) reduce accuracy to less than 3 significant decimal digits (i.e., 8 binary digits). I have written some modifications for supp-pdf that avoid all of these. No pre-division is used because multiplication is accomplished by something like \dimen16 = \withoutpt\the\dimen0 \dimen6 and division is accomplished by computing 1/D and multiplying. Since the numerator (1) is fixed, this one division can be arranged for maximum accuracy. I do this by halving D until it is less than 1pt, keeping track of the number of halvings required. Then I divide 2^30 by D, then double the result 2 fewer times than than D was halved. This guarantees at least 14 binary places accuracy, or the number of places in D, whichever is smaller. My speed tests show that the resulting code is as fast or slightly faster than the current code. Further efficiency could be gained by performing the calculation of D outside the loop of calls to \doMPconcat (I have not done this yet). The current state of my code can be found at http://comp.uark.edu/~luecking/tex/supp-pdf.mod and a stripped down version of the reverse dangerous bend code that shows the problem is http://comp.uark.edu/~luecking/tex/rdbend.mp Comments are welcome. Converters to XML

All, I understand very little about MathML and XML. Is it possible to take a Context document and convert it into XML and MathML to be displayed in a XML and MathML aware browser? And what browsers are "aware" for this task? Is it possible to take a Context document and convert it into Braille for the seeing impaired? I'd love to hear about these issues. Pointers on the net would be welcome.

pdfetex can't find map files

Aargh! Font problems again: after not using ConTeXt for a while, I installed the December 6 package today, generated formats, copied cont-sys.rme and texexec.rme, and so on. Since I recently upgraded my teTeX installation, I also edited pdftex.cfg, adding a bunch of map +foo lines--though I guess that's not strictly necessary, since I have \autoloadmapfilestrue in cont-sys.tex. All my fonts and typescripts are in the same places they were before, and it seems they are being found; however, pdfetex seems to be unable to use regular TeX fonts (e.g. Computer Modern) because it can't find the map files installed by ConTeXt. There are a number error messages that look like this (representing all the ConTeXt map files, I think): Warning: pdfetex (file original-public-vnr.map): \ cannot open font map file The files exist and are world-readable, so the above must mean that pdfetex just can't find them. Now, I did one important thing differently from before: I installed ConTeXt under $TEXMFLOCAL, which on my system is /usr/local/share/texmf. So the map files in question are in /usr/local/share/texmf/fonts/map/pdftex/context/ And I *think* my texmf.cnf is set up correctly: TEXMFLOCAL = /usr/local/share/texmf TEXMF = {$HOMETEXMF,!!$TEXMFLOCAL,!!$TEXMFMAIN} TEXFONTMAPS = .;$TEXMF/fontname;$TEXMF/fonts/map// % also TEXFONTMAPS.pdftex and TEXFONTMAPS.pdfetex w/ same values TEXINPUTS.pdftex = .;$TEXMF/{pdftex,tex}/{plain,generic,context,}// TEXINPUTS.pdfetex = \ .;$TEXMF/{pdfetex,pdftex,etex,tex}/{plain,generic,context,}// TEXINPUTS.context = \ .;$TEXMF/{pdftex,etex,tex}/{context,plain,generic,}// ... and so on. Dear friends, I ran the tests exactly as you suggested. There is something wrong with a tmf font but I don't understand the message. Update ConTeXt 2004-12-06 for teTeX 2.99.4-beta: map files

Hi all, I have a running tetex-2.99.4-beta. Now I would like to update ConTeXt to version 2004-12-06. After comparing directory structures I see there is difference: 1. In ConTeXt all map files are in fonts/map/pdftex/context/*.map 2. In teTeX amm map files are in fonts/map/dvips/context/*.map So my question is how I could update ConTeXt safely ? Hello, is the module letter still supportet? As mentioned in xcorresp.pdf the file "m-letter.tex" is that module, but this is missing on my system. Hi, A next release of texmfstart will provide texmfstart bin:xsltproc kpse:somefile.xsl somefile.xml this means that one can put for instance xsl scripts (and whatever file) in the tree without the need for explicit paths; another application is: texmfstart bin:scite kpse:cont-sys.tex (or whatever editor you use); so, this will locate the actual cont-sys file and let you edit it, which is more convenient than locating the file in the tree first. Another (experimental) feature is: texmfstart --iftouched=old.pdf,new.pdf dosomething.rb old.pdf new.pdf which will only execute 'dosomething' when old and new have different time stamps. (This is a prelude to a more advanced 'runtime' graphic manipulation feature.) I also updated the manual (will be synced when i update the distribution). Hi there, For those of you who are interested, Hans has released a new ConTeXt last week, and I've created a release notes pages for it here: http://contextgarden.net/Context_2004.12.06 Highlights: * texfont.pl is now version 2.2.1. From now on, it uses internal filename globbing (using a new switch: --pattern=<wildcard>) instead of the shell wildcard expansion. Hello out there, OK, I am having a bad day, but that doesn't stop me posting ... if you (Wolfgang) have font problems: please run the code that I mentioned in all my recent posts: Something like: -------------------------------------------------- \usetypescript [adobekb][\defaultencoding] \usetypescript[palatino][\defaultencoding] \setupbodyfont[palatino,12pt] \starttext \input tufte \stoptext -------------------------------------------------- If this goes wrong: post the relevant pieces of your logfile. This is the only way I can help. Please do not make assumptions about strange file names and please do not send me strange typescripts that I have never seen before (at least I forgot about them). Just run the code and post your results. After that we can try to find the rest of the problems. LaTeX2ConTeXt : external links not work after recompiled

Hi all, Just recompiled the doc LaTeX2ConTeXt (http://www.berenddeboer.net/tex/LaTeX2ConTeXt.pdf) The compiling process is OK under tetex-beta 2.99.4. But all external links not work! scite does not build output

Hi, I have some problems with scite: it generates no output but generates this error message: >texmfstart texexec.pl --pdf test.tex >Das System kann die angegebene Datei nicht finden. (-> this means that the system cannot find the file) If I start this in comand promt I get a long message (see at the end of this mail). The script is complaining about "unknown file type: texmfscripts" but an output is generated. Why is it not working from scite? Hi, I would like to use multipage tables. I had a look on the wiki and there are 2 ways of doing that. What is the advantage of using \startlinetable ? One of these seems to be that we can repeat columns .. Is Context going keep going with \startlinetable or not ? (As no doc exists and its developpement seems to be not finished yet) ? Thanks. Wrong text alignment within Context.

Hi, Am trying to control my text in order to appear right aligned. I don't understand why the last paragraph is typeset like this. There are several paragraphs before which are typeset correctly. What can i do to control this ? Many thanks. Dirar. PS. \setuptolerance

Hello all, could somebody explain me the usage of the \setuptolerance command and its particular parameters? I've found several forms of this command, but no explanation of them at all... The main ConTeXt manual (cont-eni.pdf, pages 87-88) only mentions that it is used [horizontal,verystrict] and [vertical,strict] by default... Should I issue two \setuptolerance commands to setup up horizontal and vertical tolerance? On contextgarden.net I've found one example using the following form: \setuptolerance [{horizontal, verytolerant},{vertical, verystrict}] ...tried this, but it produces "Overfull \hbox" at almost every third line... :-( Currently I use the setup: \setuptolerance[verytolerant,stretch] which gives quite good results, but I don't know what it exactly does (I googled it somewhere)... Wrapping \type{}

In my BNF module I use " as an active character that begins and ends terminals in the grammar: <regex>: <branch> ; <branch>, "\|", <regex>. Now, the above doesn't quite work as written, as \ is still active (and so is, in fact | as we're really inside a \starttabulate. What I would like for the "" pair to do is work as a wrapper for \type{}, so that everything in-between is passed on to \type{}. Is there a way of getting them to do that? This is my current definition: \gdef"% {\ifBNFoutsidestring% \global\BNFoutsidestringfalse% \begingroup% \BNFunsetcatcodes% \catcode`\"\@@active% \@@bnfterminalstart% \else% \@@bnfterminalstop% \endgroup% \global\BNFoutsidestringtrue% \fi} I figured something like \long\gdef"#1"% {\type{#1}} might work, but it didn't. Problems with scite

m-bib, \cite and no year?

Salve Taco, I'm using m-bib, with \setupbibtex[database=literatur,sort=author] \setuppublications[sort=bbl,refcommand=authoryear,numbering=yes] This leads to three problems: First, I do have entries such as @Misc{Wikipedia, key = {Wikipedia}, title = {Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia}, howpublished = {\gotoURL{http://wikipedia.com}} } with no year entry, and this comes out as "Wikipedia ()". I think the parens should only be used if the year is nonempty. Second, I getempty entries in my list of references, which do get a number. Also, the first 20 numbers are printed in red, while the subsequent entries are in black. I know this is a vague description, I haven't been able to analyze it in more detail yet. Just wanted to let you know. Third, I have entries in my bibliography where the authors are listed with their family names only. This causes spurious commas in the list of references. Hi! I was wondering if anyone has any books to recommend, mainly in the area of typesetting, i.e., on TeX, typography, and so on. Personally, I can recommend Donald E. Knuth's "The TeXbook" and also his book on MetaFont. I am thinking of getting "The Complete Manual of Typography" by James Felici, which seems to be a very good book on the subject. I experienced this when I added before the literature component a catalogue component that uses a structure like the commented lines do. So I had two separate files actually! Hello, As I told before, I want the grey box as defined in the page numbering (see below) to appear with its outer border aligned to the outer border of the outer margin. Right now, it aligns with its inner border to the inner border of the outer margin. I tried with uitlijnen=buiten but without success. pagenumbers in margin

Hello, After a long period of "Context inactivity", I am again into document preparation. I want to put the pagenumbers in a doublesided document in the outer margin. So far no problem at all... but I want the number to be placed in a 3cm wide grey box, wich I do with an inframed command within the pagenumbering setup. This also works more or less, but (see if I can explain this in plain english without using figures !!.....) : The grey box with the pagenumber aligns its inner border with the inner border of the outer margin. What I want is the grey box to align its outer border with the outer border of the outer margin..... Any suggestion ? Geert Dobbels.

Hi, please have a look at testfile below: without a footnote everything works fine, but with the footnote the columnset gets crashed! I noticed this bug in a bigger book project: The columnset is at the end as a seperate document (\component). And the footnote was added 300 pages and 5 component files before !!! As this footnote was one of the last changes that were done before I wanted to send the book to the printer a fast help would be very much appreciated. I would like to install context with scite on my computer. This runs WinXp. Trying to download mswincontext.zip from the pragma site comes up with the message url not found. How do most people install this on a windows system or this is mostly used by linux users. thanks vs

Hi, when using \startcolumns I could use: \startcolumns[n=2,rule=off] \setupindenting[none] \switchtobodyfont[8.5pt]\setupinterlinespace[line=10pt] \clubpenalty=0\widowpenalty=10000\displaywidowpenalty=10000\brokenpenalty=0 ... but when using \definecolumnset[myset][n=2] \startcolumnset[myset] \switchtobodyfont[8.5pt]\setupinterlinespace[line=10pt] ... doesn't work (actually it ends in halfempty pages). How to set fontsize+interlinespace with columnsets ? Steffen

I've tryed using (is that natural?) rsync on win xp (for testing Hans method for updating Contex). It works smooth if you stay away from xp sp2. Otherwise, you get a blue screen complaining about memory pbs (error/non error tested twice, on 2 differents win$$box). -- Olivier TURLIER

Questions about TOC

A very timid question: did anything change in the recent versions about generation of TOCs? I could swear that this worked a couple of weeks ago, but I can't make it work now: 1) I want numbered and unnumbered chapters, so I use \chapter{} and \title{}. I thought that the \title-parts were included in the TOC by default, but they don't show up, regardless of what I do. 2) I can't get any of the alternatives to work properly. Here's an sample file: \starttext \setupcombinedlist[content][alternative=c] \placecontent \chapter{1} \section{a} \section{b} \section{c} \chapter{2} \section{a} \section{b} \title{I} \section{a} \section{b} \section{c} \title{II} \stoptext Tried appending the [alternative=c] to \placecontent as well, no change. Tried to download and try the stand alone version but the access to it is not allowed from the pragma site. Is this a not a free version? i had previously tried the cd iso image and was hoping to try it on my computer, further the correspondence manual could not be downloaded either. Any comments? vivek

I just switched to Fedora Core 3 (from Mandrake 10), and checked what version of Texexec it had. It is 3.1. So I went to the website, downloaded the cont-tmf.zip file, unzipped it, and tried to figure out how to install context. Boy! that installation manual is confusing. For a novice like me, I need some step-by-step guide. Any link where I can find that? thank you ciro

Greek Font Problem SOLVED

Thanks to the very kind and patient efforts of Thomas Schmitz, I no longer get ugly bitmaps in typesetting Greek but lovely script. I am posting the solution to the problem in the hope that it might prove useful to others. PROBLEM: bitmap display of Greek fonts on typesetting. These fonts (Teubner, Oxonia, Leipzig, Ibycus, Kadmos, Bosphoros) come in a package obtained from Thomas. SOLUTION: 1. remove/trash teTeX folder(s) 2. reinstall teTeX (TeXLive 2004) using i–Installer 3. re-install ConTeXt updater • these first three steps were necessary because my installation of teTeX had become corrupted 4. in Terminal execute ruby /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex/scripts/context/ruby/textools.rb --fixtexmftrees ~/Library/texmf 5. copy cont-sys.tex into /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/tex/context/user/ 6. move the file greek.map into ~/Library/texmf/fonts/map/greek.map 7. in Terminal execute sudo updmap --disable greek.map and then sudo updmap --enable Map greek.map I will happy to send those interested a copy of cont-sys.tex. (Thomas prepared this file by modifying cont-sys.rme) Alan

Hi all, I just wanted to run this technique by you all, and get a bit of feedback, both on the utility as well as the style of the solution. I'm a bit unhealthily obsessed by fonts, especially with getting the most out of the various features. Unfortunately, each vendor expresses different features in different ways, so that leads to font-sensitive markup. This problem explodes in the OpenType and XeTeX world, because of the number of features each font exposes. However, it's relevant in the pdfTeX/type1 world as well. Just last night, I discovered the FPL fonts (SC/OsF for URW Palladio) on CTAN (<http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/fonts/fpl/>). How does one access the old style figures in this font without knowing intimately about the font? I took inspiration (and code) from the Unicode font mechanisms and the new font effects. The code is in the attached test-psc, the typescript in type-psc. The result is at <http://homepage.mac.com/atl/tex/test-psc.pdf>. What this does and doesn't do: - generalises font access to features in associated fonts - adapts itself to current size/family/alternative - doesn't allow further adaptation (e.g., \it \Var[osf] 123 \bf 456) - best for short runs of associated fonts (e.g., OsF, sub/superscripts) - can insert arbitrary features into existing typescripts - relies on a couple special naming conventions within typescripts - can be defined based on Serif/Sans/Mono family - is not currently defined based on bodyfont namespace. Is this more desirable with people \switchbodyfont ing in a doc? - allows expansion beyond \tf\bf\it\bi\sl\bs\sc choices. Any thoughts? (If anyone wants to give pointers on the correct usage/relevance of [#1][#2]#3 parameters, pushfont/popfont, and adapting to bodyfont namespaces, please feel free!) I have installed Texlive8 (Not sure wether it is the latest one. I have used TeXSetup.exe). \setupURL [color=blue] seems buggy. Try this: \setupcolors [state=start] \setupinteraction [state=start] \setupurl [color=blue] \useURL[one][http://www.google.com/] \starttext Why the hell is \from[one] wrapping so badly? \stoptext You will (hopefully...or something) notice that the http:// appears above and slightly to the left of www.google.com in the sentence. remove \setupurl[...] and it works fine, rendering it green. It also works fine if you remove the color=blue and add style=type instead or whatever. All, I've got a slide show set up with: \setuppapersize[S6][S6] \setuplayout [width=middle, top=1cm, bottom=1cm, backspace=1cm, leftmargin=0pt, rightmargin=0pt, footer=0pt, header=0pt] Then, I have material on a slide (page), followed by a \page command, material on a slide (second page), followed by a \page command, material on a slide (third page), followed by a \page command, .... Now, I would like to print my slides on US Letter, two slides the page. Page 1 should contain my first slide at the top, second at the bottom. Page 2 should contain my third slide at the top, fourth slide at the bottom. Etc, Etc, Etc, ... Can someonw show me how to do this? Thanks.

Hi, again. verb-ini and nath both define (incompatible) instances of \save- and \restorecatcode. Simply renaming them in nath to \NATH(save|restore)catcode seems to work fine. nath and \mathematics

The following has to be added to nath for spacing to work correctly: \def\mathematics#1{\relax\ifmmode#1\else$#1$\fi} adding it anywhere after \def$#1${\@@dollar{#1}} seems to work fine. The problem is that $ is redefined, but \mathematics doesn't catch on so the spacing gets all messed up. Frames with width=broad in something (enumeration) with a location=hanging don't abide to the adjusted width of the text, it is simply shifted to the left: \version[temporary] \setupframedtexts [width=broad] \defineenumeration [example] [location=hanging, text=Example] \starttext \startexample \startframedtext \starttyping % ls \stoptyping \stopframedtext \stopexample \stoptext To me it sounds like a simple bug, but perhaps this is intentional? FLOWcharts

Is there a way to reduce the "padding" around the contents of entities of a flowchart? I get a lot of room around the text of entities, which makes the text real small [maxwidth=\textwidth], but the charts as a whole very large. nath and \(start|stop)formula

Hi! I just began testing the 2.99.1.20041026 release of tetex and nath is acting up. In the following document, the first math-formula works fine, but the second one (display) doesn't: \usemodule[nath] \starttext $A = (B, C, D, E)$ \placeformula \startformula A = (B, C, D, E) \stopformula \stoptext ! Undefined control sequence. l.6 A = ( B, C, D, E) ? X Any ideas? I'm guessing that the activation of ( messes something up. If ( is changed to \{, the first , (after B) gives the same error. pstoedit

Hello, I have been trying to use pstoedit to generate a .mp file but it doesn't work :-( I have followed these steps: 1.- With Gimp: test.gif -> Save as: test.ps 2.- pstoedit (as Metafun manual indicates): pstoedit -ssp -dt -f mpost test.ps test.mp But test.mp seems empty (just lines with % and so) So, any link to continue reading? Lurker fails ..

Hi all, Every time i make a search i get a result page (which is good), but when i try to access the following pages with the arrow button on top of the page i get an error page with the following message: Lurker - failed to render page: Bad request (20040414.184748.afa41a8e%20%20editor.html): The given parameter was not of the correct format. A searc request must be formatted like: search/YYYYMMDD.HHMMSS.hashcode(a)word,word,word.xml I have tried with firefox and internet explorer. Thanks for any help. Hi, when typesetting a book with ConTeXt I always have to start with a author's RTF file. For converting I use "rtf2latex2e" - and have to spent a lot time too cleaning and correction the resulting tex file. Does anybody know/have a better solution for converting RTF to TEX files? (I won't be the only one using ConTeXt for typestting existing RTF/DOC documents, do I?) Steffen
