Dear all, quite by coincidence, I discovered a nice font for download. It is called GFSDidot and can be downloaded at http://greekfontsociety.org/ typefaces.html I became interested because it has a full set of polytoniko Greek characters, but the Latin typeface (which resembles Palatino) is very nice, too; it has (for the Regular variant) a full set of small caps, oldstyle figures, and full f-ligatures, so it's almost an expert font. The font is free; the readme says: "You may use these fonts for personal and commercial use. These fonts may be freely redistributed, provided that you do not alter them in any way and that you credit GFS for this. These fonts are distributed free and may not be sold or resold for any purposes." The font comes in the usual four variants as an OpenType font. However, texfont and the lcdf-tools choked on the bold and bold italic with this message: ../include/lcdf/vector.hh:52: failed assertion `i>=0 && i<_n' After converting them to pfb/afm (via cfftot1), installation was easy. If anyone (Adam??) can figure out what this message means, I'd be grateful nevertheless. Have a look and enjoy! Best Thomas

blank chapter last page

Hi, ConTeXt's default behavior is to insert a page, when necessary, to force a new chapter to begin on a right hand page. One consequence when using running headers is that they appear on these extra pages too. I use the following code to control a chapter's opening page. % Define heads for chapter opening pages \definetext[chapterstart][footer][pagenumber] \setuphead[chapter][header=empty,footer=chapterstart] I would like those inserted extra pages to be completely blank. "Degrading" TABLE column

I'm trying to solve a problem with a TABLE in a large-ish (600 page) book. The table occurs in an appendix, and the contents of one column are spilling out into the next column on the right. The weird thing is that when I process just that bit of the book, the effect is much smaller, and when I process the whole book (with the table near the end), the contents move all the way to the other side of the next column, moving almost a full column's width to the right. I will try to work up an example, but in the meantime, does this ring a bell with anyone in terms of something (an offset value, and alignment parameter?) which "degrades" over the course of a large run, such that the effect is minimal in a small document, but visible at the end of a large one? All, I'd like to design an exercise environment that will keep both the exercise and solution together. Has anyone done something similar in Context?

Thank you Taco and Gábor for your valuable comments-) Based on both of your comments, it seems that the most practical approach in the short run is for Aleph (whose raison d`etre is more focused on the short run->) is to just treat otf's like cid/enriched type1 fonts (a la Latin Modern), which is what ConTeXt (and I guess LaTeX too) are already doing (with smart encodings, etc.) The main thing that aleph offers on this front is >256-glyph encodings. Simple otp's could provide switches to turn on needed features (small caps, superiors, swashes, etc) in a large font without clogging the system with multiple encodings (Occam's razor); only a single encoding vector for the entire raw font would be needed. TUO loading bug

Something strange happens with textbackground (again, I am afraid). Hi, out of curiosity: how do I include a swf file into a pdf? So I can click on 'play' (or wherever) to start it? I have seen x-res-50.tex and created a PDF file using the example, but I'd like to have such an animation within my other documents. Need to compile individual components with proper numbering, etc.

All, With the structure (posted below for completeness), I will need to compile the individual components (small chunks to post online for students with modems). I know this is possible, with say texexec section1. However, if that is section1.tex of chapter8.tex, then I will need the run to produce all of the correct numbering of examples, equations, definitions, etc. I am hoping this is possible with this structure. Comments? Story of a newbie looking for a table

Hi (bis) I'd like to share my newbie experience about tables. With iPages, the ''fabulous, marvelous, amazing, simple" word processor from apple, It took me more or less half an hour to design and fill a table, with fixed width colored cells and so on. Unfortunately, once I saved the document, iPages could no longer open it anymore... :-( I then spent a pair of pair of hours (minus half an hour) to try to repair things... with no success. With ConTeXt, I spent a pair of pair of hours (minus half an hour) trying to design my table, and less than half an hour to fill it. Now the work is complete. :-) But I am not really satisfied, I feel frustrated because I have the impression that it took me too much time. It appears that neither texshow nor garden did help me. So I digged into standard Google, and it pointed me to the context mailing list archive, finally pointing me to the name of the right manual at pragma ADE. Fortunately, this up-to-date manual was online . Once, my work was complete, I understood that the Google search on context garden wiki was limited to context garden... I then found that some information I was missing about tables was on the context garden tabulate page...:-/ But I have the impression that the manuals do contain much more than available on contextgarden. So, is it possible to have the Google search engine at context garden also look into the manuals? Moreover, how do you formulate a request in standard google? Adding the "ConTeXt" key word does not lead to accurate results.

trouble with typescripts

Hi all, I have a specific problem with a typescriptfile that may be of general interest (the problem, not the typescript). I have collected a number of font definitions into one file and have observed that certain fonts cannot coexist. One small example: \starttypescript[greekcanonica] % font definitions \stoptypescript \starttypescript[GreekCanonica] \definetypeface[MyGreekCanonica] \stoptypescript and \starttypescript[greekcardo] % font definitions \stoptypescript \starttypescript \definetypeface[MyGreekCardo] \stoptypescript cannot be defined in the same typescriptfile. If I comment A out, B will work; it A is uncommented, ConTeXt will complain about missing font definitions for B. So I would suspect that in processing typescripts, names are somehow truncated to 9 or less characters. So these questions arise: 1. Can this be changed? (We had a similar behavior with names of modules, which was changed a while ago, I think.) 2. Is there a workaround? Is it possible to add other parameters to the \definetypeface[] line? Best Thomas

OpenType fonts

Hi all, OpenType fonts are all the rage today. Are there any critiqes of the format, or discussions of its limitations? How many typesetting applications can actually take full advantage of opentype fonts? What are the chances that OpenType (at least some of its advanced features) will go the way of MultipleMaster fonts? The answers to these questions have a bearing on my own advanced Classical Arabic script project. For example, the ovf+ocp mechanism of Aleph seems much richer than what otf offers, so should I bother with otf at all or just stick to enriched Type1 fonts (>256 glyphs, used by LatinModern)? I may be mistaken, but it seems that the Aleph utilities need updating to take full advantage of enriched Type1 fonts (not to mention otf fonts). Right now I am still building ovf's from a series of standard type1's. Here is one possible limitation of otf (please correct me if I'm wrong): While an otf can contain an alternate glyph of a given character, it cannot tell the typesetting application that, if there is the equivalent to underfull paragraph spacing, replace the default <glyph>.1 with <glyph>.2. This sort of thing is common in, e.g. old Arabic lead-press books and in handwritten books. TeX should be capable of this, though it remains to be seen whether this should be implemented at the engine level (a la pdfetex) or at the macro level. What about dynamic documentation?

Hi all, Is is extremely useful for a newbie as I am to have access to the manuals electronically. You just open the pdf and search to obtain what you need. In general, you end up with a command that you have to copy from the pdf then paste to your source file. Another solution is to use the text editor completion feature, which is available only once you know the correct command name, at least the beginning... What I am missing is a button in the pdf itself that would automagically insert the proper code in my source. To be more concrete, here is what could be done (on Mac OS X at least). 0 - Define a data model. 1 - For a reasonnable set of commands, define dedicated GUIs panels. 2 - Write a dedicated browser As there is a huge amount of "reasonnable" TeX and ConTeXt commands, it is -not- reasonnable to fine tune a dedicated GUI for each one. But with some perl I think it would be possible to turn for example the Quick References Manuals into a set of xml files, each one dedicated to its own command. If these files are just HTML forms (modulo the proper style and automagic filter), we have the GUI for free using a web browser. The communication between the browser and the text editor could come from SUBMIT. At least a "copy/paste" phase would be enough. I already have a custom web browser that can insert some text directly in a text editor (iTeXMac) It is based on Mac OS X WebKit. Which means that I will incorporate this browser directly into iTM, but this not the question so far. All this makes points 1 and 2 above acceptable IMHO. The problems come from point 0. I think a good thing would be to create a subsection of the context garden, or another wiki, gathering all the sources. The seed would come from the actual documentation with automagic scripts and people would update at will. Then people would be able to work on a local version using a web sucker. We can imagine searching facilities as well BTW, Sometimes it is necessary to have some output to understand the real effect of a command. This should enter into consideration. How does it sound?

Small capitals for the name in m-bib

Since, I'm not m-bib expert, how to manage the point properly ? Taco, I'm translating a bibli-num-fr.tex and bibl-apa-fr.tex, do you want them when it's over ? New bibliography beta

Greetings all, esp. Taco, I'm finally working with the new bib module, it works quite well. I've found one curiosity: I have a /defineparagraphs (semi?)-kludge in a modified bibl- file to take care of some wonky (but beautiful) layout demands. It worked perfectly in the last version: \defineparagraphs [bibpar] [n=3,before=\vskip -1.75\baselineskip,after=\vskip -1.25 \baselineskip,distance=.2em,align={hz,hanging}] \setupparagraphs [bibpar] [1] [width=1.5em] \setupparagraphs [bibpar] [2] [width=3.3em] What appears to be happening is that the "after" command no longer has any effect---regardless of its content. Hi all, I'm having trouble getting \totalnumberofpages to display while using \setuparranging [2UP]. What I'd like to do is print a letter, two columns to a page, then cut the page in two so the letter is in long columns with fractional page numbering at the bottom of each column, 1/4, 2/4, 3/4, 4/4. Hi guys, I'm starting to use conTeXt. And thanks for all those people encourage me in my last email. I read in various places that the pace of development is fast. I don't get a clue of what that means. As far as I know LaTeX hasn't been updated for over 3 years. So how fast is conTeXt being developed? The conTeXt manual dated 2001 since pretty old to me. Am I right? Problems creating tfms for an Unicode font

Hello ConTeXters, in consequence to the Hans' prompt, I've tried to create enc and tfm files for some Japanese fonts. Namely, I've tried the Mona (http://monafont.sourceforge.net/index-e.html) and MS Mincho (distributed with Windows XP). I've done these steps: 1) Created a TTX representation of the font with the ttx utility (http://sourceforge.net/projects/fonttools/) ttx -t cmap -t name msmincho.ttf 2) Created the enc files using the Adam Lindsay's XSL stylesheet (http://www.ntg.nl/maps/pdf/30_10.pdf) I've googled out that Japanse "Katakana" and "Hiragana" characters are located at Unicode offsets 0x30, 0x32, 0x33 and 0xff. So I've created four enc files the following way java -jar saxon8.jar msmincho.ttx ttx2enc.xsl "vector=30" >msmincho30.enc The files are created without errors, but I cannot judge if they are correct... 3) Tried to create the appropriate tfm files with the ttf2tfm utility. ttf2tfm msmincho.ttf -T msmincho30.enc msmincho30.tfm I got a lot of warnings of style: --- cut --- ttf2tfm: WARNING: Cannot find character `uni3064' specified in input encoding. ttf2tfm: WARNING: Cannot find character `uni3065' specified in input encoding. --- cut --- and finally this error: --- cut --- Using msmincho30.enc as input encoding. ttf2tfm: ERROR: No TTF characters. --- cut --- No tfm file was created. Could somebody advise/help me? I really haven't any experience with font conversion and cannot realize what's goings wrong... Hi all, a question for the many happy users of Taco's bibmodule: I'm in the process of splitting a larger project into several components. What I have is: transl.tex --> main project file environment.tex --> environment for all components products.tex --> list of components component1.tex component2.tex . . . Index, TOC etc. seem to be working very well, but I can't get the bibliographic references right when compiling. Where should the call to bibmodule reside, and how can I run bibtex on such a project? strange behavior of startbackground

Hello, I came across a problem when I was trying to compile my tex file. The attached file is an example. I have to process Chinese, so "\loadmapfile[gbk]" and "\usemodule[chinese]" are essential. I'm using the lastest release of ConTeXt. ConText ver:2005.12.01, texExec 5.4.3, to be exact. And I use "texmfstart texexec.pl --autopdf --pdf test2.tex" to compile my source file. The problem is there is enough space in page 2 for the words between \startbackground and \stopbackground, but the background block was put on page 3 with most of the page 2 was left blank. And there is another small problem, the command \setupindenting[medium] didn't work. I've filled in missing phrases in lang-ger.tex and lang-sla.tex for the languages I speak, i.e. English, German, Czech and Slovak. The manual suggests that you can put index calls between a \section heading and its first paragraph without worry, but for me it breaks the page-breaking mechanism, allowing the section title to end up at the bottom of a page like this: \starttext \section{Tufte} \dorecurse{4}{\input tufte \par} \section{Knuth} \index{Knuth} \input knuth \par \stoptext Is there any workaround/fix? linux installations

Dear all (and especially the linux heads...), I have been playing with my linux partition lately and looking at the linux installation section in the wiki. I see there are two approaches: - take the minimal linux distribution that Hans prepares, - start from TexLive I see why these approaches have their advantages. Nevertheless, I would want to add a further point: shouldn't we provide some hints for those who have a working TeX installation on linux and want to keep it because they are not (yet) exclusive ConTeXt users and want to be able to upgrade with their distribution's system? I have played around with several distros and think some general points could go into the wiki: 1. look at texmf.cnf; find out where TEXMFLOCAL is on your system. In most distros, the directory doesn't exist yet, create it. 2. In the definitions of texmf.cnf, make sure that TEXMFLOCAL comes before the other TEXMF trees. 3. unzip cont-tmf.zip into this directory, run mktexlsr or texhash 4. run texexec --make --al This last step gave and still gives me some headaches (my last attempt was with Opensuse 10.1 alpha 4), and that's where I ask for some elucidation: texexec does not rely on kpsewhich to locate the directory where it dumps the formats. So what I've seen happening is that I have brandnew formats in one place, yet texexec --version will still display the old versions (or say somehting like "cont-en.fmt unknown"). I have often just found out where kpsewhich searches for the formats and then replaced these old formats with symlinks to the new ones, but I'm not quite sure if this is a good approach. Does anyone have more insights on this? What's with this proliferation of TEXMF-trees in recent versions of teTeX: which ones do we actually need? Which ones can be deleted safely? Thanks Thomas

Hello, with bold typewriter font I have more success, but one problem remains: pdf-output. There is the same problem as with bold small caps: kpathsea: Running mktexpk --mfmode / --bdpi 72 --mag 1+14/72 --dpi 86 cmbtt10 mktexpk: Mismatched mode ljfzzz and resolution 72; ignoring mode. mktexpk: Can't guess mode for 72 dpi devices. mktexpk: Use a config file, or update me. kpathsea: Appending font creation commands to missfont.log. For those who haven't been following the story: Since the demise of Y&Y, there hasn't been a place to obtain a legal copy of their Lucida font distribution, which was the only place to get the Lucida New Math fonts needed for doing TeX math properly in Lucida. A motivation and idea that came to mind while writing a post to comp.text.tex: == Then again, most (all?) of publishers require Latex source, if my document ever makes it that far.. And Latex has nicer source code formatting than Context. so I'm really split between Latex and Context.. None of them individually fit all (I admit, vague) requirements.. Context being able to chew up Latex .cls files and still allowing for its advanced formatting directives, long tables, and other goodies would be a perfect match. == Basically, rewrite standard Latex environments and commands (\chapter, \section, itemize, enumerate, etc..) present in article.cls and report.cls to expand to Context commands that give an equivalent layout.. How much work would it be? Either a Latex emulation environment or a new implementation of "Latex classes" for Context? I have to admit that I don't have time to start implementing either. I'm just interested in some feasibility opinions.. 80% of Latex<>Context transition can be done with a few simple regexes. Other 20% have to be translated by hand, and it is very painful, esp. if tables are in question..

Dear gang, I am now on WinXP now (up from W2000) and only use mswincontext.zip for my TeX'ing needs. However, I need to install LaTeX for legacy purposes (mainly Lambda/Aleph critical edition stuff). fpTeX is gone, I can't find XemTeX (broken link https://xemtex.groups.foundry.supelec.fr/downloads/xemtex-0.5-rc0.msi ) so I guess that leaves MiKTeX. Any advice on choosing/installing a minimal LaTeX distribution? Updated links? Hi all, I just came across a situation where I must produce a pdf that has version 1.3 (or in worst case 1.4). I did not find anything on contextgarden or in the archives. Is there any ConTeXt command for this? I tried with \pdfoptionpdfminorversion=3 in the beginning of the file (as suggested on comp.text.tex), but still, acroread says it is a pdf version 1.5... /Micke P

Font Question

I want to use palatino text with euler math in my document. This is how I proceed. 1. I downloaded latest mswincontext environment from pragma website. 2. To test if palatino works correctly, I tested the simple document. %--------- \usetypescript[palatino][texnansi] \switchtobodyfont[palatino,11pt] \starttext This is a test . \stoptext %--------------- Everything works fine, and the text is in pallatino (the urw clone). However, when I look at fonts included in the document, Latin Modern is also there. I am just curious as how LM got into the document, and can I get rid of it. 3. I am not sure on how to include euler. I looked at Euler in ConTeXt (using Euler math font) by Adam Lindsay. I already have eulervm vf and tfm directories in $TEXMF/fonts/tfm/public/eulervm and $TEXMF/fonts/vf/public/eulervm There is a math-eul.tex at $TEXMFLOCAL/tex/context/base. The My Way by Adam says that I also need type-eul.tex, but I do not know where to get it from. Hi, I use 'texexec --batch --pages=1:2' and "Page \pagenumber\ of \totalnumberofpages". What I get is: "Page 1 of 1" and "Page 2 of 2". I of cause like to see: "Page 1 of 2". Any ideas how to get this? Tobias

The whole (sub)section on a single page

Hello, I would like to have the whole (sub)section on a single page unless it doesn't fit on one page (in this case I don't mind if it starts on a new page or simply continues on the old one, but it should break somewhere, that's why putting the content into a \vbox doesn't solve the problem). This is perhaps already described somewhere in the documentation, but I don't know where to look for it (well, I could start reading the source code for split=yes; perhaps \vsplit could help, but don't know how exactly to apply it). I can solve the problem temporary by manually placing page breaks, but I guess that there exists some really short, simple & elegant solutions for it. It doesn't need to automatically determine the subsection boundaries automatically (although this would be great), so I can write something like this: \startmaterialforonepage \subsection{split only if too long for one page} \dorecurse{10}{whatever comes here \dots } \stopmaterialforonepage Thank you, Mojca

Some time back (maybe three years ago) Hans showed me a way to create a sidebar, with optional background and hanging out half way into the margin. Now I would like to encapsulate the commands into a simple \start \stop sequence. But I don't know how to do it. Hans started off with some definitions: \setupfloat [intermezzo] [leftmargindistance=-\outercombitotal, rightmargindistance=-\outercombitotal, default={outer,high}] \setupcaption[intermezzo][location=none] \defineframedtext [myohmy] [width=6cm,bodyfont=small, frame=off, backgroundcorner=round, backgroundradius=16pt,background=screen,backgroundscreen=.7] Then he called these two definitions with a sequence like: (some text) \placeintermezzo{}{\startmyohmy\input dawkins \relax\stopmyohmy} (some text) What I would like to do is boil down the last mentioned command sequence into \startsidebar (some text) \stopsidebar But I am stumped by the task. Hello list, I've got a lot of newbie questions. I'm writing a technical document with context for the first time to try it. I come from a TeX/LaTeX world. -> How to print a tilda? I'm trying to write an URL with a tilda in it with the font \tt. \widetilda, \tilda do not output any character. Even \~{} do not print anything. And it does not seem to appear somewhere in the wiki or in the "special characters" section of the "ConTeXt an excursion" excellent document. -> How could I do french guillemets (<< and >>)? Is it possible? -> I would like to make a glossary, ie an index with a definition for each entry. Many parts of the manual could help me but i don't really now in which direction to dig: is it a list of definition? Should I use registers? -> I'm trying to put a metapost graphic in the margin like te example in the manual reference (page 47) using the following command: \definestartstop[important][command={\inmarge{\useMPgraphic{bang}[width=\marginwidth]}}] But (of course :) it does not work at all and put some blank pages. All, I was able to texfont the demofont and texfont the palatino and compiled test files for each. But when I try to compile mfonts.tex, I get the stuff below. I obviously need help. [Newbie] Fonts!

Hello all. Maybe this is a trivial question but I cannot understand what's going on. I've read the mfonts.pdf and I tried to compile the following file: \usetypescript[palatino] \switchtobodyfont[palatino,11pt] \starttext Hello world \stoptext It works. Changing palatino to whatever other font name (even non-existant ones like hfdjfh!) produces the same output. I used also the \setupbodyfont but same result. texexec always says bodyfont: 12pt rm is loaded no matter what I specify. So the question is: how do I actually change the font my document is typeset in? Thank you. Fabio

Hi all, I've been TeX-doodling with the font shown on the page below: http://www.typography.com/catalog/hoeflertext/ornaments.html Some of the nicer patterns are predicated on having horizontal as well as vertical elements smashed up next to one another. I find myself having to adjust for little gaps with: \godown[-0.029\bodyfontsize] Does this ring a bell with anyone? I would have thought \godown[0pt] was the answer, but not so, here. Filling framed boxes up to the max

Hi, I would like to do the timetable of the Chaos Communication Congress in ConTeXt again. Last year, I used a perl script to convert the iCal file to ConTeXt code. This year, I'd like to do it a bit better. One of the problems I have there is that I would like to fill a framed box with text up to the max. If it is full before everything is typeset, the text should end with »...«. The manual solution (cf. http://www.alech.de/tmp/day1.pdf) involved counting the numbers of letters and perl and estimating a cut-off value. But I guess there is a better method in ConTeXt itself. TeX i-Package updated, Easy Mac font support for PDFTeX

The TeX i-Package has been updated. It now contains support for several Mac fonts using the gtamacfonts package. Both LaTeX and ConTeXt are supported. Note: only PDFTeX (not TeX+dvips) is supported. PS trickery like font expansion and pstricks is not supported. This is all because of the formats of the fonts (truetype). Apple ships the fonts packed in socalled "font suit cases". PDFTeX can only use the fonts unpacked. To unpack them a tool called fondu can be used. There is an i-Package for fondu. If fondu is installed *before* TeX is installed, the TeX i-Package will automatically unpack the Mac fonts in the right TeX directory. Note that distributing the Apple fonts (packed or unpacked) is a breach of copyright, hence I do not distribute the fonts and nor should you. After installing fondu and TeX, you can us it like this: To use these fonts with LaTeX, put e.g. the following in your file: \usepackage[T1]{fontenc} \usepackage{gtamachoefler} Such a style file will make Hoefler Text the serif (roman) text font and Gill Sans the sans serif font. The following basic styles are available: gtamacbaskerville.sty gtamacdidot.sty gtamacgeorgia.sty gtamachoefler.sty There are more. See the manual for details. For the same effect using ConTeXt, enter e.g.: \usetypescriptfile[type-gtamacfonts] \usetypescript[Hoefler][ec] \setupbodyfont[Hoefler,12pt] Support for ConTeXt is better than support for LaTeX for the simple reason that ConTeXt is more powerful. Example documents and a manual can be found in the texmf.gwtex/doc/ fonts/gtamacfonts subdirectory. To get the manual you can type "texdoc gtamacfonts" in a Terminal window. Also check out "texdoc GTAHoeflerSymbols" in a Terminal window. G PS. I expect to do one more update with this with some changes to the manual and such, but nothing fundamental.

I am confused about the behaviour of \cal and calligraphic. In a font where the calligraphic letters are in MathItalic all goes well. But, in a font where the calligraphic letters come from another font I get: \definefontsynonym [Calligraphic] [FONT_OTHER_THAN_MathSymbol] in text: \calligraphic{ABC} is ok in text: {\cal ABC} is ok in math: $\calligraphic{ABC}$ is ok in text: ${\cal ABC}$ IS NOT OK, SYMBOLS KEEP COMING FROM MATHSYMBOL I would the font redefinition also being obeyed in math {\cal} ? problems with bold small caps

Accents: àÉßöÜ} \stoptext And here are my problems: 1.) I get bold sc font, but the normal \sc is now the normal font. 2.) It works only with dvi-output, with pdf I get: kpathsea: Running mktexpk --mfmode / --bdpi 72 --mag 1+0/72 --dpi 72 ecxc1200 mktexpk: Mismatched mode ljfzzz and resolution 72; ignoring mode. mktexpk: Can't guess mode for 72 dpi devices. mktexpk: Use a config file, or update me. kpathsea: Appending font creation commands to missfont.log. Where should I tell pdfetex the right resolution? 3.) Accented characters are not correct. 4.) Could there be native support for bold small caps in the distribution? TIA for any help! German hyphenation patterns

All, German orthography is a mess right now, we now have two sets of rules, old and new. New hyphenation is ugly and rules are constantly changing. I see that ConTeXt has lang-deo.pat, so I was hoping that this would produce "old" patterns, but it doesn't seem to work: \enableregime[utf] \mainlanguage[deo] \starttext \showhyphens{gestorben} \showhyphens{Bierdeckel} \showhyphens{äußerst} \stoptext gives me: Underfull \hbox (badness 10000) in paragraph at lines 8--8 [] \*10ptrmtf* ge-stor-ben Underfull \hbox (badness 10000) in paragraph at lines 10--10 [] \*10ptrmtf* Bier-de-ckel Underfull \hbox (badness 10000) in paragraph at lines 12--12 [] \*10ptrmtf* ‰u-ˇerst which is identical to \mainlanguage[de]. extra space after variant

When I code: abc {\variant[xyz] pqr} I find extra space typeset between "abc" and "pqr". This extra space is absent when I code abc {\variant[xyz]pqr} Thus the space in the source between ] and pqr makes a difference in the result. Clearly visible in: abc {\variant[xyz] pqr} abc {\variant[xyz]pqr}\crlf abc {\Var[xyz]pqr} abc {\Var[xyz] pqr}\crlf I would think that this should not happen. The whitespace goes away by inserting an \ignorespaces in the variant- definition. \def\variant[#1]% slow {\dosetscaledfont \expanded{\definedfont [\truefontname{\fontstringA\fontstylesuffix\fontvariant \fontstringA{#1}} at \scaledfont]}\ignorespaces} Still using version 2005-11-14, forget this if already corrected in the latest version of the 30th. yours sincerely, dr. Hi, I'm uploading an update. Apart from a few fixes/new-things, the main change in the minimals is that the <platform>tex.zip files now only contain binaries, and justtex.zip the rest. So, in case you use a windows/linux minimal: you need to download two files now. In the case of macosx, gerbens auto-updater takes care of it, I replaced the iwona/kurier/etc map/enc files with the ones that are now shipped. In the meantime i found out that there is also a change in the ams font tfm structure, so if you copy over old trees, make that you remove old instances of those fonts. I hope that i didn't mess up things too much. The normal cont-*.zip files are updates too, and the map files now refer to the new iwona cum suis scheme uploading now, may take a while Hans

So I tried: \input enco-pfr \useencoding[pfr] \startencoding [ec] \usepdffontresource ec \stopencoding \setupbodyfont[lbr]% I have typescripts for Lucida Bright fonts, the Czech is typeset OK \starttext A testing Czech sentence follows: Příliš žluťoučký kůň úpěl ďábelské ódy. \stoptext Later I've found out that: - \input enco-pfr is already done in context.tex - \startencoding [ec] \usepdffontresource ec \stopencoding is already done at the bottom of enco-pfr.tex - so it seems that the only command I should issue is: \useencoding[pfr] BTW, in the Czech format (cont-cz.tex), I have defined: \setupencoding[default=ec] Doesn't it collide with the \useencoding[pfr] command later in the document? Dear gang, I am having difficuly getting dropped caps and the new indenting mechanism coordinated; the dropped cap goes into the margin. LucidaBright fonts...I'm stumped

I've been using teTeX - LaTeX - LucidaBright fonts for many years, but am unable to make these fonts work in ConTeXt. My present setup after installing teTeX (a Debian or Ubuntu package): 1. Make a directory /usr/local/share/texmf/fonts/type1/yandy 2. Copy the LB .pfb files to subdirectories lubright, lucida, lucidfax, lucsans and lumath 3. Run texhash and everything works fine in LaTeX -- I only have to specify \usepackage{lucidbry} in the preamble of my documents. Couldn't be easier. I've read through some of the archived messages on this newsgroup for clues for making LB fonts work with ConTeXt, I have even tried following the suggested steps, but no dice. Could someone here please list the precise steps required to get from my above teTeX setup to one that works in ConTeXt? -- H.A.J. Koster "Behavioral axioms are right, but agents make mistakes..." Placing a scaled symbol within the flow of text

Hi all, I am attempting to insert a symbol at a reduced size within the text flow but I'm not sure how to achieve this. I'm probably using \scale in an inappropriate way and I'm sure don't know my \vbox's from my \hbox's! Any examples of how to reduce the size of a glyph whilst still being able to insert it as a normal character in the text flow would be greatly appreciated. GNU Emacs/ AucTeX configuration for ConTeXt

Hi all, Is there someone using GNU Emacs with ConTeXt. After some googlelyzing, I've learnt : 1. ConTeXt mode from Berend de Boer is now included in AucTeX 2. Some people use Emacs with ConTeXt and METAPOST, but with special .el files that seems not really up-to-date I didn't found usefull information to configure properly AucTeX in order to work well with ConTeXt and METAPOST, even in the auctex mailing list. It's ok for the menu (apparently managed by site) but I don't have syntax highlighting except for comment and indenting doesn't work well. So, my questions are: 1. Since there is a ConTeXt mode, I suppose there is some advanced features like syntax highlighting and indentation rules. Am I right ? 2. If I'm right, how to configure it ? 3. I will use METAPOST in my .tex files, how to manage this within Emacs ? 4. You know advanded features I must know ? ;-) I'm sorry but I'm addicted to Emacs and don't want to use Scite even if it seems ConTeXt-friendly. I'm aware of the fact that this mail is more Emacs/AucTeX related but since I didn't succeed in finding answers yet I submit this issue to the ConTeXt community. Best regards,

I was probing into the font variant mechanism. Is it possible to automatically determine font size to fit text to a given space?

G'day. One of the things I (ab)use ConTeXt for is printing little text labels to Avery stock. This works quite well, and I was pleasantly surprised how easy it was to get working with some hints from Hans in the archives of this list. The labels, over time, have varying lengths of text on them, and to get that to fit on a single label sometimes requires that I vary the font size to avoid the text spilling over outside the bounding box. Is there any reasonable way that I could automate the process of adjusting the font size so that I got the biggest possible size while keeping the text fully fitted to the label? I don't mind automating this outside of TeX/ConTeXt, by using a script to try the font sizes and examine the TeX output for overflow messages, but I don't know quite what to look for. Hints about that, or a native TeX method[1], would be very much appreciated. At the moment it is a relatively slow process of manual trial and error.
