widgets in layers (property)

New year, old problem... Hi all, I want to use widgets (tooltip, buttons,..) in some stacked pdf layers. My problem is, that the widgets are somehow not bound to the state of their layer. They are still active, even if the surrounding layer is deactivated. I add a mimimal example (it's best to open the 'Layers' tab in acrobat). The first layer with tooltip is not active, the second one is active, but has no tooltip. Just move the mouse over the text and you can see the tooltip from the deactivated layer one. I have also tried it with a fieldstack, but 'annotations cannot be inside an XForm'. Any hints are welcome. I am typesetting books, primarily text and images. My original background is Quark/InDesign, but quite recently, I decided to look into TeX/LaTeX (LaTeX because that is just what most of the TeX references refer to). I first spent some time trying to learn LaTeX and although I was able to accomplish a number of my desired goals, I began to run into some problems related to maintaining text on a baseline grid. When searching for solutions, I came across a reference to ConTeXt. My first impressions are that ConTeXt looks great, and would handle most of what I would like to accomplish with a nice uniform approach. I haven't explored many of the features I will need to use, but am trying to read the manuals and listserv archives and basically trying things out to see how things function. So, I am sure I will have a number of questions that will later turn out to seem obvious (often the case, I guess for the uninitiated). Eventually, I might even be able to answer a couple of questions.... But, to begin, one thing I would like to do for a project I am working on is to wrap continuous text around an image (placed on one side of the main text body), and I am encountering a little difficulty. The basic situation in my document is that the figure can float, to be inserted at the next available spot, placed at the left or right margin, with text above (if there is space), to the side, and below (if there is space). First, it appears that TeX, LaTeX and ConTeXt can only place a figure next to text at the beginning of a paragraph. Is this correct? Second, using ConText, when I use \placefigure, if there is enough space on a page, it appears to place it, and wrap text around the side. Everything looks fine. But, if there is not enough space remaining on the page, the remainder of the page is left blank, and then the figure is placed at the beginning of the next page, with text wrapped around it. (That is both what I observed, and also I read in the "Details" document as the expected behavior). If I use \placefloat, if there is not enough space remaining on the page, the text will continue printing on the page and the float will be placed on the next page, BUT without any text to the side of it. What I would like is to be able to combine these two behaviors when placing a floating figure: If there is enough space on the page, it would place the figure there and wrap text around it (as it currently does for \placefigure). If there is not enough space, it will 'float' the figure and continue with the text on the current page (as it does with \placefloat, but not with \placefigure) and insert the figure on a subsequent page when there is space, wrapping the text around the figure at that point (again as it does with \placefigure, but does not seem to do with \placefloat). Is it possible to do this using a current set of ConTeXt control sequences and maybe I am just missing something? If not, is this something that can be implemented? (I don't have any experience with lower level TeX macro programming). All of what I am looking for is already there, but not all in one control sequence. Thank you very much for any help, Randolph

Hello, I tried to implement something like the LaTeX varioref package, but without success. In detail: I would like to create a command like \at[], say \VarioAt[], that outputs a text in function of the page-number, for example: * if page is the same as the current page: "on the current page" * if page is next page: "on the following page" * if page is previous page: "on the preceding page" * else "on page XX" (XX is page-number) I tried with something like \doifelse{\expanded{\at[myRef]}}{\expanded{\currentpage}}% {same page}{different pages} But it seems, that this does not work... :( Could you help please? Greetings all, Taco, I've just run across a small bug in the bibl-ssa style for the bib- module. The (wonderful) mechanism for deleting subsequent identical names goes a little too far if the first item in the bibliography is an edited book---that is, editor(s) only, and no author(s). "A little too far" meaning the first item is printed without the editor's name. Hi, I'm presently trying to do slide, and I need to make things appear by steps. So, I've found the rsteps module, but I'm having some problems to use it. Here are my questions. I appreciate any hints or help. 1) When I define a theorem in a slide with steps, my theorem 1 is theorem 2 at the second step. How to control this ? 2) I wish to use the same text to print (wihout steps) and with slide (with steps). If I comment the "\usemodule [rsteps]", the instructions \StartSteps \NextStep.. are unknown of course, so how should I redefine them ? I guess I should provide new definitions only for screen mode ? Is there a simpler solution ? . 3) On each slide, the header contains the page number, which appears only at the last step of the slide.The same effect occurs with the footline which appears only at last step of a slide. Is there a way to correct this ? ie I wish the header and footer do not change, so the steps are more transparent. Thanks for help. Fabrice.

'Glossary' on every page

Hello to all, I have a problem: I want to add a kind of glossary on a book. It will be, in fact, an explanation of acronyms ('NATO: North Atlantic Treaty Organisation' for instance). But... I'd want it on every page, only for the acronyms used on the current page (and alphabetically sorted if possible)... I tried using layers (with or without tying them to backgrounds), blocks (\begin... \end...), buffers, list of synonyms, etc. but I had problems with one of the requirements or another. :-) My first idea was to use blocks for each page : \beginABREV[1] NATO: North Atlantic Treaty Organisation \endABREV \beginABREV[1] BLOB: Binary Large Object \endABREV and to use them with \useblocks[ABREV][\pagenumber] in the footer. To be sure to give the right page number to \beginABREV, I tried to define a label and use it, something like (from memory, I don't have my code near to me): \reference[abbrev\ABREVcount]% Put a label \beginABREV[{\ref[r][abbrev\ABREVcount]}]% and use the label to get the current page on subsequent runs. but I went on a nightmare of expansion problems... Plus it didn't eliminate duplicates nor sort the acronyms. But it would have been a start... :-) Can someone point me to the right direction? Thanks in advance, Gilles.

Hans, Taco, et al, This is getting pretty close to the limit of my expertise. The good stuff of it is stolen from Metafun and mp-func.mp. Because of the way I handle clipping the path, p:=p cutbefore cpath; p:=reverse p; p:=p cutbefore cpath; this will only work on functions (like lines, quadratics, and polynomials, maybe sinusoids) that both enter and leave the region inside the clipping path. I proceed the in the order I do because I want the axes layered atop the grid and the functions layered atop the grid and axes. It's actually a pretty cool routine for teachers as it almost works like a TI83 calculator. Just change xmin, xmax, xscl, ymin, ymax, and yscl to determine domain and range and tick marks, then adjust the number of points for a smooth graph, then set the width of the figure you want. There's an option to label the axes differently from the usual x and y, if needed. Finally, thanks to Hans' expertise, the drawfcn routine allows for a parametric definition of the intended curve. All you need to do to make another graphic is copy and paste everything between \startMPpage ... \stopMPpage and adjust the parameters described above. Now you have a second plot. You can run texexec with texexec filename or texexec --page=2 filename if you only want your second graphic. When I compile all, I write an xml database file (very cool) and use \usemodule[fig-base] \usefigurebase[figures/figlibSection1] in my document. Very cool working arrangement. If I do two compiles of the following code, saved a junk6.tex, with: texexec junk6 texexec junk6 This produces a file junk6.pdf that looks as it should. expert font access

Ahoi! One decorative font that I use contains some additional (swashed etc.) characters. At the moment I access them like this: \def\DelitschC#1{\getglyph{\defaultencoding-raw-delitschantiqua} {\char#1}} \definetextmodediscretionary A {\DelitschC{197}} So I get the alternative A as |A|, and that's enough for me. But in this way |A| always takes this character from the same font. How could I solve this more generally, two cases: 1. if several fonts use the same "expert" encoding 2. if I change the font, I'd like to get a simple A instead of |A| At the moment I need (2.), because I'd like to use something like \chapter{|A|nfang}; that's ok with my definition of chapter style=\hw (Delitsch font being defined as handwriting), but not in the ToC (rm font). Further (don't know how different), how could I define "take this special character always at the end/beginning of a word" or the like, e.g. how could I enable the different 's' of gothic fonts? Another one: How can I define additional ligatures, e.g. if my font provides a "Qu" or some other unusual ligature? The additional files of the newer packages are finally in the right places (docs/fonts/... and tex/context/third) I'll think about a better structure of the page including preview pictures... Hans, Taco, et al, There's a quote in metafun-s.pdf (page 539) that says "You can embed the graphic in a \startMPpage construct and process it with TEXEXEC. In that case you have the full MetaFun functionality available. Before processing the file, TEXEXEC will do a couple of checks on the file. It will also make sure that the auxiliary files (mpt for textext’s and mpo for outline fonts) are taken care of too." I am really unsure of what this means as the code below will attest. no 'D' in math-eul.tex

In May I discovered that there was a typo in math-eul.tex rendering the lower-case 'd' an 'e'. Amazingly, the same problem occurs also for the upper-case 'D', and requires changing the line \definemathcharacter [D] [nothing] [mr] ["45] into \definemathcharacter [D] [nothing] [mr] ["44] Apparently this beautiful font is severely underused to allow this typo to survive! I can't find the format file `pdfetex.fmt'! pdfetex: unrecognized option `--alias=context' pdfetex: unrecognized option `--undump=cont-en' TeXExec | runtime: 3.315 >Exit code: 0 ---------------------------------------------------------------- texexec --make --all cannot be executed since the CD is not writable. Can this be overcome anyhow, is there a problem specific to my PC or is this distribution on DVD unusable as such? (I often have similar "format missing" problems when I update MikTeX but then the problem disappers when I reboot the computer - not that I understand why since I refresh the database and remake all the formats each time anyway.) Columns (text alignment)

Hi everybody. I am experimenting with ConTeXt and columns. I am creating a simple style and I setup 3 columns and redefined some heading (section, subsection, subsubsections). Now the problem is that the text at the end of the columns is not aligned (i.e., the columns end at different heights). I thought that this was due to the \blank commands that I specified as before and after parameters in the heading definitions, but even by using the flexible modifier doesn't change that behavior. I don't know where the problem is. The tex file is attached. Thank you, Fabio P.S.: By using the attached file, I cannot specify the position parameter for \placefigure. If I write \placefigure{Name}{\externalfigure[...} it works. \placefigure[btlr]{name}{\externalfigure[...} does not. Weird. P.P.S.: I was reading the columns.pdf "tutorial". I saw that a \definecolumnsethsize command is used but I haven't found any documentation about that command anywhere. I use width=2\textwidth which seems to produce the same effects (2 columns span).

What it should become looks as follows: \chapter{This is the title of the chapter} In the table of contents it should show up as: Epilog: This is the title of the chapter So the question is, how to get the word Epilog into the table of contents in front of the chapter title, neatly aligned with the rest of the table of contents. Normally metapost/metafun starts out drawing in black. Is it possible to change this globally, so that "withcolor xyz" is not needed everytime another color is wanted? developing large numbers of MP files for inclusion in source

Hans, Taco, et al, Our intermediate algebra text will require a large number of figures. I have two thoughts. 1. It's really inefficient to compile the entire context source file just to see what will happen to one figure. So, it seems that we should probably have a library of graphs for later inclusion in the main document. One would want to be able to compile all at once or individually if one were just working on one file. 2. The code for many individual figures is quite long and tends to obscure the flow of thought when included in the source. Again, if they were coming from an external document, that would be better. I am not looking to include the files one at a time after development. I know how to do that. Rather, I am looking for a way to gather all the source for figures in a file, compile all of the file, or just one figure from the file, then somehow call that source code into the main .tex doc during compile time. I am open to any suggestions on how to most efficiently develop and include figures (in Metapost, of course) in our main document. Thanks.

Mojca, You pretty much describe the way I've always worked in the past. I am currently working on a technique where all my graphics for section1 of chapter 3 are inside a file named sectionfigs.tex. I am using MPpage and friends to make these. The file currently contains about 14 graphics and files .1 through .14 are produced when I run the file with texexec. Next, I have a file section1figs.xml that is working as per the directions in xfigures-s.pdf from Pragma. It produces a nice listing of all of the figures for section 1 and their new labels (names). I am now in my main document section1.tex including these figures as per directions in xfigures-s.pdf. I'd be happy to send what I've done when I've finished. Let me know. backspace makeupwidth tradeoff

Hi, I'd like to increase the backspace at the expense of the makeupwidth. I like to do this by adding either a scalar or a percentage of the backspace. In the following bit of code I'd expect both sets of \mybackspace and \mywidth macros to yield identical results, but the don't. The scalar approach seems to work correctly, and the percentage not. I'd appreciate it if somebody could show me where I've gone wrong. It must be embarrassingly simple, but I can't see it - yet. Thanks in advance. A font question.

I use Context for highly formatted non-fiction, but I am a bit reluctant to use it for much of my work because of the strange (to me) font handling arrangements. I see no purpose for the multiple synonyms of the same font. That just adds layers of extra work. And I am used to tweaking both the font size and the baselineskip by fractional amounts to help in getting the pagination just right and the spacing on the individual page correct. For example I have the main body font on a current project defined thus: \font\rm=8r-AGaramond-Regular at 10.5pt and this: \baselineskip 12.0pt plus .25pt If the page comes up a line short because of strict widow prevention then the extra space is distributed imperceptibly among the lines. \parskip is 0 pt for this novel. With a fixed baselineskip the extra space is distributed only at paragraph breaks, which gives an ugly result. This kind of fine tuning by users is perhaps foreign to Context as it now exists. Font sizes are in fixed steps for one thing. However abandoning the typescript etc. process deprives one of the useful feature of using tfa, tfb, tfx etc. to adjust font sizes semi-automatically. So here is my question. If I set up my own font definition system and as part of it I have statements like: \font\tfa bchr8r at 10.45pt \font\tfb bchr8r at 11.37pt ... ... will the rest of Context accept the above tfb font and size in places where a heading macro automatically defaults to tfb? Hello, some remarks/errors of the current UTF-8 Chinese support in ConTeXt 2005.12.19: (For (a) to (c) see also attached file.) a) unic-chi.tex: This contains the unicode vectors for which a Chinese font will be used; currently it only covers \dostepwiserecurse{40}{159}{1}{\defineunicodecommand #1 {\uchar}} but this it misses the U+FFxx characters (fullwidth latin characters, e.g. '?' which is as wide as a Chinese character) => solution: Add \defineunicodecommand 255 {\uchar} b) Labels: lang-chi.tex contains: \setuplabeltext [\s!cn] [\v!figure={\cnencoding\cnencodedfigure}] \startencoding[uni-c] \definecommand cnencodedfigure {\uchar{86}{254}} but if I use (with UTF-8) \placefigure{}{} the figure character is not shown; however if I setup this directly, i.e. \setuplabeltext[cn][figure={\uchar{86}{254}}] , the character is shown just fine. c) Doing font switching using \SimKaiTi seems to convert back to GBK, can we have Unicode by default (at least when UTF-8 encoding is used)? Question 3. Question 4. Question Then, later in the document, I'll unhide the answer blocks. Is it worth my while to try to use question-answer blocks in an itemized environment? should I pursue that or try a different tack?

followup metapost textext?

Followup to my previous post (see below) I executed the code on the "live tex site" and, mirabile dictu, there it works. The difference I can see is a much older pdfetex (Version 3.141592-1.21a-2.2 (Web2C 7.5.4)) on the live site, whereas I have a newer one (Version 3.141592-1.30.4-2.2 (Web2C 7.5.5)). Some things I don't understand about typescripts...

Christmas is approaching, and I hate to be a pest this time of the year, but there's this problem that really bothers me: I'm still working hard to release version 2 of my Greek module on the unsuspecting masses. It will define all fonts in a typescript instead of as single fonts to allow switches like {\em } etc. It appears that the typescript mechanism creates some problems. The most serious one for me is that it seems to demand a full list of sizes that can be used in this form: \definebodyfont [30pt,25pt,20pt,18pt,17.3pt,14.4pt,14pt,12pt,11pt,11.5pt,10pt,9pt,8pt, 7pt,6pt,5pt,4pt] [rm] [default] If I specify a bodyfont with a size that's not in this list \setupbodyfont[somebodyfont,19.7pt] I get no errors, but no output either :-( If I add 19.7pt to the list, everything works again. Is there an explanation for this behavior? It also looks like I should define a math font for these Greek fonts. It looks like ConTeXt will try to get certain symbols from math if they're not defined in the bodyfont. Is there a syntax for creating a default math font for an entire set of typescripts? I tried this \starttypescript \definetypeface [all] [mm] [math] [times] [default] [encoding=default] \starttypescript but it doesn't seem to work, if a symbol like \textdoublebracketleft is used, compilation will fail with this error: ! Math formula deleted: Insufficient symbol fonts. \mathematics #1->\relax \ifmmode #1\else $#1$ \fi \doutfunihashglyph ...#1\endcsname {#2}\endcsname \else \strippedcsname \uni... Hello Hans, Tobias and others, with help of Xiao Jianfeng, I've added the missing Chinese localizations into lang-chi.tex (as Tobias reported). I also attach a simple test file. Could you please review it and add it to the distribution it it's all OK? I only had a small problem - I was unable to recode the glyphs into BIG5 (using iconv). Does anybody guess why or could anybody try it with another tool? Below is the original message from Xiao for reference that the glyphs are encoded OK. Offtopic: TeX in MetaPost?

Good evening. I apologize that I dare to post here such offtopic, but I feel this is the right place to get an answer. I try to write some general-purpose MetaPost macros for me with ConTeXt-like interface. For instance, I'd like something like this: label(point, "label=$A$, xlabel=$x_A$, ylabel=$y_A$, ylabelshift=left, lines=no, dotstyle=bigdot, ..."); I've done a lot of work and it almost works, but ... I failed to notice that TeX sequences are in normal cases included between btex ... etex and are preprocessed. In other words, they cannot be typeset as a string. I could use TEX macro, but it slows the process down in a horrible way. I think the best way is this: In the first run of MetaPost to flush out all TeX codes, then process it with TeX (texexec), and then to include it in the second MetaPost run. But I don't know how to do it? Can you help me or at least hint where I could find an answer? And BTW, is this a good idea at all? Isn't there a better/faster way? Many thanks for you kind help. Good evening. I've spent some time experimenting with LatinModern font. After all I was able to use it, but I found I hate it. 1) The have accents positioned in a ugly way (or at least, in a way not common in the Czech typesetting) 2) Some accents do no work, for instance \"o (at least this doesn't work: \loadmapfile[psclean.map] \enableregime[il2] ... B\"ohm-Bawerk Is there some way to get privately back to CS-Modern fonts? It seems these fonts are redefined to Latin Modern, so I can't use them. Please help. Your thankful Michal Kvasnicka

Hi, Some of you may know that we are working on a project whose goal is to have all releases of the ConTeXt distribution in an on-line source repository. For that project, we are looking for old versions of the ConTeXt distribution. Hans Hagen, Patrick Gundlach and me had quite a few of them among us, but we are still missing a number of releases (we only have a complete set for 2004 and 2005). At the end of this message is a list of all the distributions before the year 2004 that we could find on our harddisks and on old tex-live and 4TeX disks. So, I have a question to all of you who have ever upgraded or downloaded your ConTeXt distribution from the Pragma website. Could you please have a look if there is still a zip on your harddisk or backup somewhere? A bit of search help: really old context-s used the filename "context.zip" and contained a directory of MS-Dos files with uppercase names, newer ones (since 1999) are named "cont-tmf.zip" and contain an embedded texmf structure with lowercase names. I'll wait until after christmas before I start filling the repository, so there is some time yet. Hi, It seems that there is a problem with parsing betex - etex blocks in the following situation: I can not say with which version this has been introduced. (I messed up my old TeX, so I have only new ones) I tested this with the version of 19-12-2005 an 30-11-2005. \setMPtext{1}{CENTER} \startuseMPgraphic{TEST} picture Text; Text := \MPbetex{1}; draw Text; \stopuseMPgraphic the betex-etex block will look like 'tex CENTERetex' of course the etex should be separated by a space. For testing I attach the minimal file. Hello All! There is intresting macros in cont-new -- shortcuts. It works pretty well, but I have one question: how to undefine them back? For example after command: \defineshortcut [//] [] [style=\em] I can get slash only by \textslash (which is expected) and it breaks things like: \typefile {some/dir/file} So how to revert to previous meaning of '/'?
