There is a problem involving \setupinteraction and \useURL with \goto that prevents hyphenation of URL links in the body text. The following works properly when the\setupinteraction line is commented out. Otherwise the URL runs in to the margin. I am using ConTeXt ver: 2007.01.23 13:32 MKII. Colour (color) in mathml

Hello. I'm trying to implement part of a change-tracking system using colour to highlight changed areas in a document. I use MathML for maths, and I need to be able to apply colour to individual elements in an equation. I thought I could do just simply <mi color="green">x</mi> but evidently not. It does look as though colour is dealt with in x-newmml.tex, but not this way. Is there a way of colouring specific elements of a MathML equation? Thanks very much. Duncan

Portuguese characters under Mac OS X

Hello folks! I am having a problem processing my ConText files under Mac OS X. I am using TeXShop, and when I render the text written in Portuguese, it does not render the characters with accents. I did not have this problem under Windows, and so I would like to know from any Mac user that typesetts in languages other than english how I can solve this problem. Thanks in advance, Fidel.

Latest ConTeXt releases (please read)

Hi, The ConTeXt releases starting from 2007.01.12 have a few major changes that seem to catch some people unawares. 1. As of 2007.01.12, ConTeXt uses a 'pdftex' executable, no longer 'pdfetex'. This matches up with the release of pdftex 1.40, where there no longer is a separate 'pdfetex' executable. There are two ways out of this: - Apparently an old install of pdftex can still run, but only if you copy the 'pdfetex' executable to the name 'pdftex'. - But a better option is to update to pdftex 1.40, if that is possible for you. If your distribution does not offer a 1.40 package yet, you can try to compile and install pdftex yourself. The sources are available here: http://sarovar.org/project/showfiles.php?group_id=106 2. As of 2007.01.18, ConTeXt uses Latin Modern math fonts instead of computer modern. Unfortunately, most distributions still have a rather old version of the Latin Modern package, that does not have these fonts, so you may get 'Cannot find font ...' errors from TeX. The possible font names are 'rm-lmr', 'lmmi', 'lmsy' and 'lmex' (with a pointsize attached), so if you see such errors, you need to update our installation. If your distribution does not offer a latin modern 1.01 package yet, you can fetch the fonts from either CTAN or the Gust website. CTAN: http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/fonts/lm/ GUST: http://www.gust.org.pl/projects/e-foundry/latin-modern 3. If you use XeTeX or aleph, there is yet another problem: the latin modern package does not itself contain dvipdfmx map files. This means (x)dvipdfmx will likely find the ones intended for pdftex instead, and it will generate a lot of warnings and errors. ConTeXt comes with a tool to generate dvipdfmx-type map files automatically, but you have to run it manually. It is a commandline tool, and you have to run it like so: ctxtools --dpx --force <texmfroot> You need to replace <texmfroot> with the toplevel texmf directory where the latin-modern font map files are. While on the commandline, you can type in kpsewhich lm-math.map If it returns /opt/tex/texmf-local/fonts/map/dvips/lm/lm-math.map, then the <texmfroot> is /opt/tex/texmf-local, and the full commandline is ctxtools --dpx --force /opt/tex/texmf-local I hope this explains most of the problems people have been having. If you or your distribution can not handle the required upgrades above, you should not update context at all, it will only give you grief (and broken output). In case this warning comes to late, all previous versions of ConTeXt are still available for download from the museum: https://foundry.supelec.fr/frs/?group_id=14 you probably want either 2007.01.12 or 2007.01.09. setupTABLE not honoring align=

Hi, There is something wrong with \setupTABLE. Unicode input problem

Hello, I 'm trying to use the t-greek module to write ancient greek in ConTeXt, giving the text in unicode (with greek characters). With the default font (Ibycus I think), when the input is in greek characters, iota subscript doesn't appear in the result pdf, or it gets garbled with the other letters. In contrary, with the same font, when the input is in the Babel way (in latin characters; iota subscript as '|'), the character with the iota subcript appears ok in the pdf. With other fonts of the module this problem doesn't appear. As Ibycus font is, as I noticed, one of the best fonts of the module, I would appreciate your help on resolving this font issue. What happened to OverlayLineWidth since august 2006? Alternating screen/noscreen rows on table

I am required by my customer to alternate between white and screen backgrounds for each row of a table for all tables, and there are lots of tables. I am considering adding code to each row of the table or else doing the thing in metafun/metapost. Advice, anyone? Just to mess things up further she wants the table number etc. above the table and left justified. I can handle that. The customer is not always right but the customer is always the customer. Hi, I was converting some of my old docs from LaTeX to ConTeXt and noticed that the macro \@ is not defined in ConTeXt. latex.ltx defines it as \def\@{\spacefactor\@m} with \mathchardef\@m=1000 In LaTeX manuals it is recommended to use \@ to control the spacing after a period. For example, if you write Carrots are good for your eyes since they contain Vitamin A. Have you seen any rabbits wearing glasses? TeX considers the period (.) terminates an abbreviation and uses inter-word space rather than inter-sentence space. In LaTeX, it is recommened that one writes this as Carrots are good for your eyes since they contain Vitamin A\@. Have you seen any rabbits wearing glasses? What is the usual way of doing the same in ConTeXt? Aditya

\useURL query

I am having a problem introducing discretionary hyphens into URLs using the latest ConTeXT and \useURL. For example, [DigRes] [{http://www.arthist.net/Link\-ERes.html}] [] [{http://www.arthist.net/LinkERes.html}] does break the URL on the printed page as I need, but the link to the target document is broken. (I get a The requested URL /Link-ERes.html was not found on this server message.) Any tips about what I am doing wrong will be much appreciated. Alan

(I don't care that the footnote lines would not be on the grid---I prefer it to a very loose interlinespace.) I guess that there is better way than to write \footnote{\setupinterlinespace[line=9pt] ...\par} Moreover, it doesn't work well since on the first line is apparently inserted a strut. To whom it may concern, I need to have multiline entries in lists (e.g., Tables of Contents, Lists of Figures etc.) that are single spaced within a document that is double spaced. I have tried using \setupinterlinespacing commands as arguments to the attributes textstyle or textcommand of \setuplist. This does not work, probably for obvious reasons. So, I'm wondering if anyone has encountered this problem, or knows of a simple solution. Thank you in advance. Andrew

ConTeXt textext fails

I did the update to ConTeXt 2006-01-18 but almost regret that decision as an old problem seems to surface again. Typesetting a file that has not failed me with an august2006 version now crashes. Relevant data from the processing log (using TeXShop): systems : begin file syllabus-s-mpgraph-temp at line 42 .... ! Undefined control sequence. l.53 \tts 66\%\CCC :4:126% So what is going on here? File syllabus-s-mpgraph-temp shows at the offending site: \starttext ..... \startMPXpage \tts 66\%\CCC:4:126% \stopMPXpage And this code must have been come from a metapost source: \startuseMPgraphic{taalengels}{width,height,gap} .... label.ulft(textext("\tts 66\%~"), (bs + 27 * u, baseline + 660 * bt + dotsize/2)); Aha, I conclude, trouble with the %-sign! But I think I have seen that error before, originating in one of the Ruby-scripts if I remember well. Having to do with the file parsing and failing on %'s or something like that. Dear list members, I noticed the following problem: text doesn't float around an image, when the paragraph starts with {\bf or \em etc} instead of unchanged font. (The text is placed on top of the image). A minimal example: \placefigure[inner]{A figure}{\framed[width=5cm,height=5cm]{Image}} {\bf This will mess up the rest.} \input tufte I don't know whether it's only my version of context, because in "context live@contextgarden" I get: (return code : 25 run time : 0 seconds total run time : 0 seconds warning : use 'texmfstart texexec' instead but no pdf (I get this with anything, has nothing to do with this particular problem). stopping texexec

I have a fairly hefty tex run, with many intervening metapost figures being made. Running "texmfstart texexec main-file" from a unix shell. When an error occurs, e.g. in the metapost processing, one gives an X to quit that part of tex-processing. However the process goes on and on, because of the many successive invocations. Control-C does not help. Is there a way to stop the texexec processing from running? (other than opening another shell, finding the pid of the main process and killing that). Hans van der Meer

I used \setupitemize[serried] for a numbered list. The items were each wider than the text block so they wrapped around to a second line. As a result Context left a blank line between items. I run out of space around the 240th footnote in a document. It appears that ConTeXt may be reloading or redefining a footnote font for each footnote or footnote number. After switching from the august2006 version of ConTeXt to 18-1-2007 suddenly an error crept up in a text not giving this before. The error was triggered by: \switchtobodyfont[24pt] and the culprit turned out to be the following statement in one of my own type files: \starttypescript [all] [lucidayy] [size] \definebodyfont [4pt,5pt,6pt,7pt,8pt,9pt,10pt,11pt,12pt,14.4pt,17.3pt] [rm,ss,tt,tts,cg,hw,fx,mm] [default] \stoptypescript There the 24pt had to be added: ...,17.3pt,24pt] My point is the phrasing of the error message: ! Math formula deleted: Insufficient symbol fonts. \dontleavehmode ...point \everymath \emptytoks $ $ }\unhbox \@@dlhbox \fi \fi \dodowithnextbox ->\noindentation \dontleavehmode \hbox to \localhsize {\ifc... l.6 \midaligned{\tfa\bf PRACTICUMBOEK CRYPTOGRAFIE} That is somewhat misleading, if I may permit myself an understatement. In the source of the midaligned there is not a math formula in sight. Now I know enough TeX to see the relevance of the two $'s further in the error message. But my point is that the text seems to point in the direction of missing (math) fonts, whereas it is just a missing fontsize. I have two questions: 1. Is it advisible (if possible at all) to make the message text more specific and directly understandable by newcomers: one may suppose they will not easily find the connection of \switchtobodyfont [something-big] to a missing size in the typescript. 2. I am curious why this error message only now pops up, whereas previously the typesetting proceeded without a hitch. Is this caused by more stringent testing in the ConTeXt code or is it just a default behaviour that is no longer valid? Hans van der Meer

I am composing a double-sided document with wide outer margins to allow space for figures. One type of figure is in-line with the text and protrudes into the wide margin. This is easy to do on left-hand pages by saying \setupfloats[location=right] and on right-hand pages by saying \setupfloats[location=left]. Is there any way to automate this so that inserting a new page does not mean I have to fix all the figures? I tried using a macro along the lines of \ifoff\pageno\\setupfloats[location=right]\else\\setupfloats[location=left]\fi but the asynchronousness of output routines means that the page number is usually wrong. Any help much appreciated. Tim

I'm trying (once again) to find out if learning something about XeTeX is worth the trouble. So far, I haven't seen any compelling reason, but I'd like to experiment a bit more. Here are two questions I have run into: 1. in the wiki pages "Talk:XeTeX," there's this anonymous piece of wisdom: Referencing fonts by filenames (just a note from the XeTeX mailing list as a reminder for later) in texmf.cnf: OPENTYPEFONTS = .;$TEXMF/fonts/opentype//;c:/Resources/Fonts// Then \setromanfont{[KalligraphiaLTStd.otf]} Is this possible or usable in ConTeXt? I have lots of OpenType fonts in ~/texmf/fonts/opentype, but not installed as system fonts, and would like to see whether they can just be used with XeTeX as with vanilla pdftex. texmf.cnf is set up accordingly, but so far, I haven't had any success. 2. When generating the formats, texexec complained about "unknow control sequence" because of lines 25 and 26 in syst-xtx.tex \setcclcuc 201C 201C 201C \setcclcuc 201D 201D 201D I had to comment out these lines to generate the formats (this is with a texlive2007 snapshot of last week and the latest ConTeXt). Columns and components

Hi! I'm toying with a complex document environment involving multiple components, both in order to learn in general and to accomplish particular objectives. So I want a 2-column layout for all the document, which is made up of a bunch of components appended one after the other in a continuous fashion. The way I thought to acheive that is, instinctively, to use \startcolumns in my product file, before declaring the various components. However, when I do this, the use of \stopcolumns at the end doesn't work. The document does compile (with columns) when I don't use the stop command, but when I do, there is an error: ! Extra }, or forgotten \endgroup. \stopcolumns ...idecolumnsfalse \endgroup \egroup l.12 \stopcolumns What is the proper way of doing this? The thing is, I need to balance my columns, and balancing doesn't work with no \stopcolumns. Thanks! Jeff

Default preference for float location

Hi, I'd like to set up floats (figures, tables, etc) so they float to the bottom of the page, by default (as if you always wrote \placefigure [bottom][...]{}{}). There does not seem to be an option to \setupfloats[] that will do this, or have I missed something? Robin

Index formatting: column leaks over page margin

I have a tiny problem with the formatting of an index placed with \completeindex. When there are more than 14 or so page numbers for an entry and the entry is in the right hand column, the numbers leak over the page boundary. I haven't done any special formatting for these index pages - is there a command that says keep the columns for a \completeindex less than x cm wide or something?

Hello, I have a question on (absolute) positionning of figures/images. I try to position my images in that way shown in the layout in this attachment (hope I can post images this way?). get XML data and put it in a table

Hello again, yet another problem.... :( I have got the following table: \bTABLE \bTR \bTD {\ss Name } \eTD \bTD FAMILY NAME \eTD \eTR \bTR \bTD {\ss Role} \eTD \bTD ROLE \eTD \eTR \bTR \bTD {\ss E-Mail} \eTD \bTD E-MAIL \eTD \eTR \eTABLE and want the first coloumn to be always the same. The 3 attributes of the second one (FAMILY NAME, ROLE, E-MAIL) should come from an XML-file. So how do I get the attributs out of the file to the special position in the table? I think this can not be difficult, but it didn´t want to work. Do I have to go step by step through my document, and ignore those tags I don´t want to get? I would like to say: \defineXMLenvironment[user] \defineXMLenvironment[name] \defineXMLignore[display] \defineXMLargument[family] and save this result in a variable. Hm, I simly don´t know... do I have to group it? pdfetex 1.40.1 + ghosscript problem?

Good evening. Excuse me this off-topic, I don't know where should I ask. I've installed pdfetex 1.40.1 to be able to use hz-algorithm with truetype fonts. Both my AdobeReader 7.x, and xpdf under SuSE Linux 10.1 view the output pdf file all right. But my gv viewer based on ghostscript (version 8.15 (2006-04-19)) dies if I try to view the output file with it. When I convert the pdf file to postscript using AdobeReader, it doesn't die but view the document incorrectly (strange letters appears where they are not supposed to be). Can anybody tell me what's wrong, and if there is a ghostscript version capable to view the output of pdftex 1.40.1? Without it it is useless for me. :-( Many thanks for your kind help. Are before=command parameters expanded?

I noticed some strange behavior which resulted from the fact that the before value is expanded in \setupfootnotes. For example, the following test case will break if \noexpand is removed: \setupfootnotes[before=\noexpand\undefined] \starttext \stoptext Is this the intended behavior or is this a bug? Module `database' and UTF8?

Good evening. I apologize that I bother you now so much with my own problems but I have to rewrite some of my macros right now for some reason. I found there is a great `database' module. I tried it with ConTeXt version 2007.01.12 15:56, perl TeXExec 5.4.3, and pdfetex 1.40.1 under SuSE Linux 10.1. I use input encoding regime utf8, and fonts in ec-lm encoding. I set it this way: \defineseparatedlist[CSV] [separator=tab,%{,}, %quotechar={"}, before=\bTABLE, after=\eTABLE, first=\bTR, last=\eTR, left=\bTD, right=\eTD] And call it with \processseparatedfile[CSV][file.csv]. It works well with words without accents. If there is an accented letter in the file.csv, it failes with this error message: ! Another \setuparranging

Good evening. Is there any SIMPLE way to add one more arranging scheme to \setuparranging command? I regularly typeset some document on a piece of paper that is 1/3 of A4, and want to print it in such a way that three of them are positioned side to side on one A4 paper. I've been doing it with pstops utility. Isn't there a simple way how make \setuparranging command to do it? And one more related question: Usually the document has just one page, so in the print version there are three same pages side to side to each other. Any hint how to do it? Many thanks for your help. error: the file 'texexec' is not found

Hi, I just updated my TeX (and ConTeXt) tree, based on the linuxtex.zip file at http://www.pragma-ade.com/download-1.htm, at /usr/local/share/tex from about the August version and after a few minor tweaks I've got it working. No other TeX stuff is installed on my Gentoo system. One big problem: all of a sudden, I need to run "source /usr/local/share/tex/setuptex" or else a command like "texmfstart texexec --color 'story.tex'" exits with an error message "the file 'texexec' is not found". This breaks the Kile program that I use to write and compile TeX files. Is there any way to get this or something similar that's not in a bash environment to just work? If this gives you problems with missing metrics, then your latin modern font package needs to be updated. Unfortunately, due to changes in pdftex, it is not possible to support both 1.40 and 1.30 reliably at the same time, so if you normally use pdftex, you have to upgrade pdftex as well as context. footnotes and footnote markers on SPREAD

Hi, there seems to be a rule that footnotes and footnote markers have to be kept on the same page -- even if there stays a lot of white space at the bottom. Is there also a kind of penalties to modify the rule like this: Keeping on the same page would be best, but on the same SPREAD is fine enough?! Steffen

grid versus whitespace

But now the whitespace 5pt between the regular paragraphs gets lost! Is there a way to have both: section grid snapping *and* regular whitespace? Steffen

I have the following setup, involving juste one component at the moment: The component file is named acoustique.tex: \startcomponent acoustique \product prd_articlesdemo \project project_dhfq2 [some text] \stopcomponent Then, in the same folder, there's the product file: \startproduct prd_articlesdemo \project project_dhfq2 \component acoustique \stopproduct Then, in the same folder, there's the project file: \startproject project_dhfq2 \environment env_dhfq2 \product prd_articlesdemo \stopproject Then, in a folder above my working folder, there's the environment file: \startenvironment env_dhfq2 [too much stuff to paste here] \stopenvironment Now when I compile either the component or the product, I get: TeXExec | no ctx file found TeXExec | nothing to process What I am doing wrong? bug in figure database

Hi Hans, I'm currently building up a new tree, based on your minimal system. Everything works fine, except figure inclusion from data bases. You can try you luck with \placepublications[criterium=local], see if that does something, but the behaviour is actually "as expected", yes. It is unlikely that I will ever truly fix this, because it wouls require a rather large rewrite. Hi Taco and everyone else, working with \placepublications[criterium=cite] inside sections, I noticed that the behavior is not the same when using a section with ownnumber=yes. The local list of publications does not appear in the latter case. I've made a sample test.tex and test.bib file to demonstrate this. It seems like this is the same behaviour as trying to use \placepublications[criterium=cite] inside a \subject, i.e. nothing appears. Is this behavior as expected? Hello, is it possible to make "texexec --mode=xxx --mode=yyy" behave the same as "texexec --mode=xxx,yyy" ? I need it, because I have a server that automatically generates pdf-files via "texexec --mode=xxx ..." and the rest of the command-line can be anything found in the tex-fileheader (for example another --mode=yyy). Hello, I'm having trouble defining a new unicode character: 'versuch.tex' reads: \defineXMLentity [\#9633] {\symbol[8]} 'versuch.xml' reads: □ Trying to compile this like so: texmfstart texexec --environment=versuch.tex versuch.xml Yields the error below. Columns page-break problem

Good morning. I've just installed new ConTeXt (ver. 2006.08.08 21:51), and use perl TeXExec (ver. 5.4.3). Now my old macros using the columns environment have stopped working properly. Even when I type (n being a number) \startcolumns \dorcurse{n}{\input tufte} \stopcolumns a the page is broken after the \stopcolumns sometimes even when only 50-80 % of the page is filled ("a" is in the next page). In my previous installations (I haven't upgraded for a long time) it worked perfect. What's wrong? Was something changed? Haven't I installed the ConTeXt properly? What should I do? Dear all Now I can use the GBK encoding chinese characters in my ConTeXt, but if I want to use the utf-8 encoding chinese characters in my tex files, this is, I want the tex source file encoded by UTF-8, how should I config the ConTeXt. BYW, all the chinese fonts needed have been installed correctly by me, including the TTFs and the corresponding Type1 fonts. Dear Thomas, Aditya, Taco, I am trying to produce a book-list for class using Taco's bib module. I would like to produce a separate list for each lecture / topic: Title of Lecture paragraph giving a synopsis of topic list of books/articles and this repeated for x number of lectures. I discovered a thread in the ConTeXt users mailing list for September last for something like this. Has there been a solution? If it would do what I want I would be grateful for a sample or instructions. I am using the latest bib module. Thanks, Charlie Doherty

Overfull \hbox query

I have been processing a number of files using the same environment file. Each time, early in the log file I get the very same message: ... (/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/tex/context/base/pdfr-ec.tex) Overfull \hbox (13.2pt too wide) detected at line 63 [] system : module ancientgreek loaded (/Users/acbowen/Library/texmf/tex/context/third/greek/t-ancientgreek.tex loading : module ancientgreek ... The problem is that I can see no evidence in the document of an overfull \hbox. Moreover, if I change the font from SIL-Gentium to Latin Modern, the message goes away, though it returns once more if I use GFSDidot say (only the line number differs). Can anyone explain what is happening or suggest how I may proceed to determine what is happening and why? Alan

texexec ruby problem

Good morning. I've just installed new ConTeXt (ver: 2006.08.08 21:51) under SuSE 10.1 Linux. I tried to make ruby version of texexec working, but I failed. When I try to run it, I get this error message: /usr/share/texmf/scripts/context/ruby/texexec.rb:10:in `require': no such file to load -- base/switch (LoadError) from /usr/share/texmf/scripts/context/ruby/texexec.rb:10 Can you tell me what package should I install? Hi, This is a question I posted before, which hasn't been resolved yet... When I use \setuphead[section][numberstyle=os], the dot in the section number becomes a triangle... One fix is to say [numberstyle=sc], but is an alternative available? Thanks! Hi, I'm still trying to place my running heads into the margin, 5 cm away from the top. My new attempt is to use layer: \definelayer[colin][width=\paperwidth,height=\paperheight,x=0mm,y=0mm] \setlayer[colin][x=5cm,y=3cm]{\framed{\getmarking[chapter][current]}} \setupbackgrounds[page][background=colin] But it doesn't seem to work either. Hi, I was using rsfs (RalfSmithFormalScript) using the definition \def\mathrsfs#1{\text{\definedfont[RalfSmithFormalScript]#1\/}} rsfs comes in three design sizes, 10, 7, and 5. However $\max_{x \in \mathrsfs{X}}$ uses rsfs10 rather than 7. This is because RalfSmithFormalScript is a synonyn for rsfs10. If I use the plain tex method of loading rsfs \font\tenscr = rsfs10 at 12pt %bodyfontsize \font\sevenscr = rsfs7 at 9pt %scriptfontsize \font\fivescr = rsfs5 at 7pt %scriptscriptfontsize \skewchar\tenscr = '177 \skewchar\sevenscr = '177 \skewchar\fivescr = '177 \newfam\scrfam \textfont\scrfam = \tenscr \scriptfont\scrfam = \sevenscr \scriptscriptfont\scrfam = \fivescr \def\scr{\fam\scrfam} then I get rsfs7 in the subscripts. Footnote lost

In this example, the first footnote number appears correctly in the body of the page but the first footnote is never placed in the footer. The second footnote is handled correctly.
