Adobe ArnoPro in mkiv

Hi all, I'm trying to use the Adobe ArnoPro font (just testing if it will work with ConTeXt). The font does work with ConTeXt/XeTeX, but not in mkiv. When I try to compile my test file with mkiv, I get this error message (which isn't very helpful to me): (/home/tas/texmf/tex/context/type-arnopro.tex (/home/tas/texmf/tex/ context/type-arnopro.mkiv)))) MtxRun | return code: ? ...live/texmf-local/scripts/context/lua/mtx-context.lua:572: attempt to compare number with nil I'm using the latest beta and luatex 0.28.0 Can anybody explain what's going wrong here? Letter backaddress

Dear Wolfgang, I'm struggling with the backaddress option … I tried the following code --- \usemodule[letter] \starttext \setupletter [fromname={Arthur Thor}, fromaddress={Hidden Street 2\\57895 Mysterytown}, backaddress={Arthur Thor, Hidden Street 2, 57895 Mysterytown}] \setupletter [toname={Mike Willson}, toaddress={Lindenstreet 12\\78569 TeX City}] \startletter [subject={Step by step guide to writing a letter}, opening={Dear Reader,}, closing={Greetings from the Author}] \input knuth \stopletter \stoptext --- but couldn't see the backaddress line in the output. Running heads peculiarity

If I want the book title to appear on even pages and the chapter name on odd pages I hve to set up the pertinent command backwards as follows: \setupheadertexts[text] [chapter][pagenumber][pagenumber][Book Title] This is the wrong sequence per the manual on page 79. Letter: address field

Dear Wolfgang, is it possible to centre the text block in the address field vertically? At the moment the address is typeset with a constant vertical offset (measured from the top) which causes lengthy address data to look slightly off balance … Thanks, Oliver

Fedora 9 (Linux) Installation

Hi, I can't seem to install ConTeXt manually. I've literally followed this page http://wiki.contextgaraden.net/Linux_User_Installation verbatim and I can't seem to compile even the most basic of documents. I'm running Fedora9 bit, and I do happen to have TeXLive with ConTeXt installed. The thing is I don't want to ruin the current install rather I'd like to have a version of ConTeXt that lives in my ~/. so that I can play about with it, I'm particurarly after the fonts that come with it. I've attached some files with the outputs of running the commands. a. source ~/.context_env $PWD/tex => results in nothing. b. mktexlsr => mktexlsrlog.txt c. texexec --version => texexec-version-log.txt d. texexec --check => check-texexec-log(copy).txt This simply doesn't work on my install it's meant to do what the author of the page said --- "This will give you a lot of lines of output including the versions of various scripts, the version of pdftex and the version of ConTeXt. It will also generate a test file and run it through ConTeXt. You should get a pdf file called texexec.pdf with the word "Test".". Didn't get anything :(. e. texexec first.tex => texexec-first-log.txt Ok now that's out of the way i've got a few questions regarding ConTeXt itself. 1. Is there an equivalent of the listing package? Take a look at listing-sample.pdf. The chapter head appears on a recto (odd numbered) page as expected but the verso blank page inserted where necessary before the chapter head has a running header. It should be blank. I can kludge this up with a wrapper macro containing \ifodd\pageno etc. but it seems there should be a more Contextish way to handle it. -- John Culleton

Bug in mplib?

Hi, I get different results when I compile the following file using mkii and mkiv. See the attached pdf output. Got fed up with context/xetex... Compiled with texmfstart texexec --lua instead and as expected (from a previous thread) bookmarks are scrambled when using accented (french) characters. Hope this (luatex) issue will be resolved very soon. Thanks for the backward compatibility though. Didn't have to change a single line of code. Hyperlink/bookmark jumps are a better, however... Can they be made so that they go to and include the corresponding chapter/section title, instead of jumping underneath them when in "single page continuous + page width" mode ? It works that way with word/openoffice generated pdfs. Thanks on beforehand, Alan

active characters in mkiv (and mkii)

Hi all, I would like to make the exclamation mark active within my Greek environment; it should remain a normal letter outside of these commands and environments. (Why? Exclamation marks aren't used in Greek, and in mkii, I had mapped it to the sublinear dot which is used for epigraphical and papyrological texts.) In pdf(e)tex, Hans wrote this macro for me: \long\def\rescanwithsetup#1#2% {{\directsetup{#1}\scantokens{#2\ignorespaces}}} but I'm not sure how to have a similar thing for mkiv (and ! is special anyway, so I'm running into trouble here...). Any pointers? Or is this a bad idea, and I should look for other solutions? Thanks Thomas

Ok the test document (first.tex) compiles, great! table of contents and bookmarks issue

Hi, When compiling the same source but with different compiler options... (1) compiled with texmfstart texexec --autopdf --pdf test.tex (2) compiled with texmfstart texexec --xtx test.tex or texmfstart texexec --xetex test.tex All hyperlinks ( table of contents and bookmarks ) jump to the correct position for (1). For (2), in all other view modes, single or a combined, other than "single page view", like for ex. "single page continuous + fit width" mode, the hyperlinks jump to the incorrect position, mostly the page before or after the one whereto it should jump to. Any idea how to prevent this behavior when compiling with xetex ? Thanks, Alan

Custom letter head

I know the manual says you're going to write this and similar things up soon … could you still give me a sneak peek as where to look at and what to modify? I'd like to install PGF/Tikz; I've downloaded version 2.0 and un-tarred it, but I have no idea where to copy the files to or what command to issue (a la texhash) to make ConTeXt aware of them. Hi, How do you set an interactive link (hyperlink) to the table of contents in a footer ? Generating a list of items

Hi all I'm teaching some classes this summer, and want to make myself a template for lesson planning. One of the things that I'd like to be able to include, if it works easily, is an automatically-created list of the materials I need to remember to bring. My intention is that I will only have to type the name of my materials once, while composing the plan itself, and have ConTeXt extract all the names and place them in a list in the same document. I expect this means I would define something like \Materials , and then while typing the main text of my plan be able to type \Materials{Photographs} or \Materials{Sound Recording} and then have ConTeXt generate a list of all the items like this ... "Materials: 1. Photographs 2. Sound Recording" ... near the top of the page. I've tried using \placeregister, but it seems to insist on printing a page number for each item and alphabetical headings as in an index. I would like to get a simple, numbered list of items. Can I tweak the \register commands to do this, or perhaps is there something else I should try? Thanks David

Fonts (sorry) weird issue

Minimals is installed in my $HOME File to build is located in a partition (/media/disk) shared between ubuntu and FreeBSD Now I'm on ubuntu from my $HOME texexec --xtx /media/disk/file.tex works from /media/disk texexec --xtx file.tex fails with ! Font \*fontin12ptsstfss*:=Fontin_Sans_R_45b:+liga;+kern;mapping=tlig;+trep; a t 12.0pt not loadable: Metric (TFM) file or installed font not found. texexec --lua works when launched from both locations. As I move on from SIL, I will of course need to find other ways to earn a living. Couple of questions

Hi, Firstly this is my first post :) (and it's going to be long), i've been using context for about a week or two and it's wonderful i like particularly like the approach of having everything built into the core. Just for reference i'm running fedora 9 64bit with texlive and i'm also new to TeX meaning that i've never bothered to study LaTeX thoroughly (as i was mainly concerned about just getting my content straight) and redefining macros was highly annoying, but things have changed now. Anyhow enough ranting i've got a few questions to ask. 1. CONTEXT, an excursion general/manuals/mp-cb-en.pdfgeneral/manuals/ms-cb-en.pdf The Manual general/manuals/cont-enp.pdfgeneral/manuals/cont-eni.pdf It's in the details general/manuals/details.pdf i) when are the manuals going to be updated? ii) details.pdf looks very interesting, i assume it's not finished right? any status info? 2. CONTEXT MkII & MkIV general/manuals/mk.pdf i've slightly confused as to what LuaTeX is, could someone please explain it. from what i've gathered it seems like it supports the use of OpenType fonts natively like XeTex and it's going to be merged into pdfTeX? 3. Fonts general/manuals/mfonts.pdf and general/manuals/mtexfont.pdf Is is worth reading these manual since LuaTeX---as i've understood---is going to support them natively and i'm never going to have to install fonts again? 4. Typographic Programming general/manuals/style.pdf Any idea when the final release of this document is due, i'd like to make a print out. 5. Is there a book on ConTeXt, that is available for purchase from somewhere like amazon. if not does anyone know of a good (and cheap) printshop in London? I'd like to print out the manuals. 6. LuaTeX problems

ConTeXt minimals is up and running but I have problems with LuaTeX. First the files I assume to be important: % Project \startproject atkmom \environment environ \product book \stopproject % Product \startproduct book \project atkmom \component images \startfrontmatter \environment fmatter \completecontent \stopfrontmatter \startbodymatter \environment body \component intro \component osbasics \component files \component opera \stopbodymatter \startbackmatter \completeindex[title=Hakemisto] \stopbackmatter \stopproduct With "texexec" my project results in proper .pdf file except the additional empty page at the end of it. With "context" the process ends after line "\product book" (I get a proper notice about the end of product book) in project file and i get the "*" prompt. It seems like LuaTeX can't see the "\stopproject" at all and thinks that the file has unexpectedly ended. Also with context I get messages that every \at, \in and \about that refers to something in component other than the one they're in is an unknown reference. They all work fine with texexec. Any idea what's wrong?

ConTeXt, Framemaker, and InDesign

Dear gang, There has been some discussion on the list lately comparing ConTeXt with InDesign. Are there any Framemaker users on the list? I'm interested in comparisons between ConTeXt and Framemaker, with cross-comparisons with InDesign as appropriate. What does ConTeXt have that Framemaker does not? What does Framemaker have that ConTeXt does not? (svg integration comes to mind -- there's been some svg discussion here the last couple of days). From what I know of Framemaker -- structured processing etc, it seems that would be a more a~propos comparison with ConTeXt than InDesign. Eventually I would like to establish a wiki page with detailed and accurate comparisons between ConTeXt, InDesign, Framemaker, and perhaps other DTP applications as well. I even plan to get my hands on the "competition" so I can get more 1st hands knowledge for my own edification. nbsp U+00A0 don’t work

Hello, As you can see in my signature, I had remap my french keyboard layout according to dvorak rules. I have the nbsp (U+00A0) on Shift+Space because we use it a lot in french (all the symbols who needs it are on Shift too). I discover today that context don't seem to recognise it : I found a « ; » alone at the beginning of a line. Context deal with the nbsp when it's the « ~ », but with the U+00A0, not. The symbol is here, my vim highlight it. I tried with and without \setcharacterspacing [frenchpunctuation] with no effect. I use context --version : MtxRun | main context file: /usr/share/texmf/tex/context/base/context.tex MtxRun | current version: 2008.06.11 22:25 Speaking about french punctuation, I remember that Arthur Reutenauer speaks about rules he wrote for frenchpunctuation, can we make a wiki page with all that rules ? AUCTeX and ConTeXt

I really like the support that AUCTeX gives for ConTeXt. Actually, in general it does well with any flavor. I'll have to RTFM to see what I can do to start a new file specifically in ConTeXt, plain, or whatever, not just LaTeX. The weird thing is that it reports unspecified "problems" at the end of running context but no such problems really exist. The trivial snippet: \starttext Hello, world! \stoptext yields the message buffer: Updating define menu... Updating setup menu... Updating other macro's menu... Updating project structure menu... Updating section block menu... Updating section menu... Updating...done Type `C-c C-l' to display results of compilation. ConTeXt: problems after {1} page. The pdf generated is, however, entirely satisfactory, as are all texted documents. My strategy is to ignore it. This appears specific to AUCTeX, in this case running on GTK Emacs 22 / Ubuntu 8.04. By contrast, I have minimal to no problems on my OS X installation. Charles

Luatex arranging

Hi to all, I've briefly presented ConTeXt to the students of my course in Visual Identities. They were all enthusiastic. So they asked me if I can give an introductory but "real" seminar. At my lab the students are all on macosx 10.4/5. Now the probem: All my students comes from humanities, no computer science background at all. I cannot ask them to be aware of low level installation aspects. My ideal would be something like the standard ConTeXt I was working with an year ago. One installs MacTeX and can start working. Now, we need easy font switching. I'm actually using XeTeX. But it has been complicated to set it up. I don't think I can have my students dig into installations ("patch this" etc). Is there any chance to have luatex into the next MacTeX distro? Any ideas? texfont fails for font Cataneo BoldSwash

Hi! Is there are an easy way to get total number of pages/tables/figures etc.? \getnumber[table] of \getnumber[figure] returns 0, \getnumber[page] gives some irrelevant number. I've found command \totalnumberofpages, is there are something similar for others? Jonathan Kew's response... --- You can't use \pdfminorversion in XeTeX, that's a pdfTeX-specific command. I think you need to pass the -V command-line option to xdvipdfmx (I expect this can be done somewhere in the ConTeXt scripts, but don't know any details), or else set it in the dvipdfmx.cfg configuration file. AFAIK, the usual default is 4, but you can set it higher if you need to embed other PDFs that use a higher version. Hi, - ConTeXt ver: 2008.06.22 17:38 MKII fmt: 2008.6.23 ( ctx minimal) - XeTeX, Version 3.1415926-2.2-0.999.1 (Web2C 7.5.6) When using (1) \setupinteraction[state=start, title={éèçàù}, subtitle={éèçàù}, author={éèçàù}, keyword={éèçàù}] the accented characters get al scrambled up in the pdf document properties fields while in the document itself all is ok. Qué passa ? (2) \pdfminorversion=5 (or whatever) gives ! Undefined control sequence. l.31 \pdfminorversion =5 ? ! Emergency stop. l.31 \pdfminorversion =5 What's the alternative ? Thanks, Alan

texshow-web questions

As an eternal optimist, I often refer to texshow-web in the hope that I will find a function to help me, or a quick description of one that I already know. In most cases I end up reverting to searching the manuals and source code. I like the idea of texshow-web and I sometimes add notes to entries if I find our something interesting. I would be quite happy to add lots more, but I have some questions and suggestions for improvements which I think would help. 1) Is there a way of adding a function to the list? or can it be updated to include all the functions from the many macro packages included with the context distribution. For example, in recent discussion group threads I have found out about the \digits command and the \filename and \hyphenatedfilename commands, none of which is in texshow-web. I would have been happy to add notes on them if I could. 2) If I'm adding notes to a command, is it possible to add a URL link to a particular page in one of the manuals? This would great for looking up a command and going straight to the relevant entry in the relevant manual. Regards, Richard Stephens

HI! I'm often use \setupinteraction[state=start] \setupcolor[state=start] \starttext \placesomething[somewhere][ref]{caption} ... ... So in the text I refer to \in{something}[ref] so I can click on it in the resulting pdf so I get there. \stoptext The question is how to change the default behavior so acrobat not resizes the document on the screen when I'm clicking on the ref object. I think it is annoying changing back to the reading size I had before. Many thanks! Janneman

In a document where \mainlanguage[fr] some words weren't hyphenated correctly so I've put them in a hyphenation pattern \hyphenation{ ap-pa-ren-ce at-ten-dai-ent com-men-cent d'am-bi-tion d'in-flu-en-ce l'ap-pa-ren-ce } The only ones who still don't get hyphenated corresponding to the above pattern are those with d'..., l'... Type-setting filenames

Hello, Can anyone suggest a good way of type-setting filenames in ConTeXt? They are usually long with few spaces and so often overhang the right-hand margin and even fall off the edge of the page. They also often include backslashes and underscores which I have to manually change - very tedious. Is there, for example, a command which handles some or all of my problems? Thanks Richard

Hello, hopefully this is the last dumb question, cause the CD is nearing it's end an will be prepared for printing soon ;-) How can I float text around a picture if I place them on a layer? What I want to achieve is something like this: ppp........ ppp........ ........... but typeset onto a layer to position it at my will ... But I can't get the text flow around the graphic. - Ubuntu 8.04 According to http://wiki.contextgarden.net/ConTeXt_Minimals I installed the context minimals in /opt/context then ( after some research about its definition and use ) created a .bash_profile file (using gedit) to which were added the following instructions #!/bin/bash source /opt/context/tex/setuptex /opt/context/tex saved it in /home/alan then logged in again and... bash doesn't seem to execute ~/.bash_profile because when launching texexec on a test file, I'm still receiving as output ConTeXt ver: 2007.09.28 16:52 MKII fmt: 2008.6.18 int: english/english which, as far as I remember, corresponds to the ubuntu context installation. What's missing ? Alan

pdfobj runtime question

hi, i'm currently struggling with some basic runtime problems in luatex. are there any rules for directly writing a pdf object? in context this is only done in the tex part. especially what pitfalls are there, if you do it in the lua part of the code ( tex.sprint(tex.ctxcatcodes,"\\immediate\\pdfobj{}")) ) and use "\the\pdflastobj" (tex or lua) to reference that object? and what must be done to make sure that things are done immediatly (in lua), so that one ore more switches between lua<-->tex always uses the right obj number? i already noticed that you have to use separated lua code for 'creation' and 'reference' (different chunks). any help welcome. regards, peter

placing image on layer is sketchy

Hello, still working on the CD booklet ;-) While trying to include the pictures I have some problems with placing a picture onto a layer: The following code should place the picture into the lower right corner of the upper part and then goes to the left. The part that goes over the page border is for the bleeding. But the result (as seen in the attached pdf) is a sketchy position of the right, bottom corner it looks like the same offset in x and -y direction. Hello, how can I use protruding with mkiv and luatex? I dont know whether it is a bug in ConTeXt or LuaTeX. \usetypescriptfile[type-buy] \usetypescript[lucida][texnansi] \setupbodyfont[lucida,12pt] \starttext `hello' \stoptext I use the tfms/map zip you attached in the mailing list together with the font bought from TUG. The binaries at PRAGMA haven't been updated since August, and you can only update ConTeXt using "download, unzip" approach, which makes you download the whole zip (independent of how much has changed), and doesn't update binaries. With minimals on the garden, only a single file will be updated in case that a single file has changed (rsync rules!!!). Minimals might have some files (fonts, binaries) missing (but feel free to request them) + standalone environment missing as well. Mojca

Problem installing ConTeXt Minimals

I've been trying to install ConTeXt Minimals to my other computer but I just can't get it to work. Installer exits with Error Code 1 and the first-setup.bat from the command line tools doesn't seem to get the required files either (after the script has run the folder is about 6.5Mb). I've installed Ruby, Perl, GhostScript and rsync as required. This might be a firewall issue but I couldn't find any notion of opening ports from installation instructions and with quick Googling I got the impressions that it shouldn't be required to open ports for rsync. So, can I fix this by opening something from my firewall or is the problem somewhere else? What exactly does that Error Code 1 mean? Thanks, Tomi Lindberg

Empty page at the end of document

After reading Wiki and searching this list I still have problems with the additional empty page appearing at the end of my document. This only happens when that said extra page would make the document to have even number of pages but as my document is meant to be singlesided I see no reason why it would be required to have an even number of pages. Custom starting text of table and figure labels

Hello, Is it possible to define custom starting text of a table of picture label? For example so that figure would have a label like "Picture 1" instead of "Figure 1" or a table would have "Spreadsheet 1" instead of "Table 1". Thank you! Bye!

Luatex (actually Aleph) and Bidi_Mirrored chars in RTL mode

Luatex does not mirror characters that has a Bidi_Mirrored property when the text direction is set to RTL (TRT in Aleph), according to http://unicode.org/reports/tr9/#Mirroring, the different types of parenthesis that has Bidi_Mirrored property should be mirreored in RTL mode, but this isn't what I get.
