rule=on in \columnset?

luatex fails

I did a complete reinstall for texlive2008 (just out of the box installation) including fresh generation of context and luatex. Of course doing luatools --generate etc. Now luatex doesn't work anymmore. Why? fallbacks for characters

Hi all, the answer to this one may be completely obvious, but I haven't found anything: I know we can define fallback fonts in mkiv, but is it possible to define fallbacks for single characters. Let's take 0x0113, "emacron." Is it possible to define "if character is present in current font, use it; else \buildtextaccent\macron e" ? Thomas

metapost behaving different

Drawing with a square pen gives better rectangles My metapost code is something like: pickup square pen draw rectangle with label within (macro call) label drawing within the rectangle is essentially done with % prevent wobbling of text boxes with uneven depth pic := textext("\setbox0=\hbox{"&labeltext&"}\dp0=0pt\box0"); % pic goes into rectangle Under mkii this worked but under mkiv the text is mangled. To restore proper text I had to surround this with pen commands: pentemp := savepen; pickup pencircle scaled 0pt; % apparently any size will do % prevent wobbling of text boxes with uneven depth pic := textext("\setbox0=\hbox{"&labeltext&"}\dp0=0pt\box0"); % pic goes into rectangle pickup pentemp; Why is mkii behaving differently and not affected by pen changes? Is this to be expected from metapost (and thus to be considered normal behaviour) or did a bug creep in? Using luatex 0.30.1 and 2008.08.05 18:47 MKIV. Running Mark IV / luatex: unknown script: context

Hi, Hello everybody, I'm new here. I just subscribed because I'm trying to use LuaTeX / ConTeX Mark IV and i have some problems with it. I'm running TeXlive 2008 installed from ArchLinux and I can't run 'context' from the command line. Hello! I was able to persuade one user to prepare ConTeXt package for NixOS distro, but, unfortunately, being from Russia he quickly discovered that he minimal example from wiki (http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Russian) does not work, i.e. \enableregime[utf] \useencoding[cyr] \definetypeface [russian] [rm] [serif] [computer-modern] [default] [encoding=t2a] \setupbodyfont[russian] \starttext Мама и Папа % Some Russian characters \stoptext does transliterate Russian characters. I do not have any experience working with Cyrillic, so if anyone can provide minimal working example it would be very nice? Equivalent of LaTeX \cancel? and Thanks!

Hi all, I recently transitioned from LaTeX to ConTeXt. There was some particular thing I needed to do (which escapes me at the moment) that was far, far easier to do in ConTeXt than in LaTeX. And, as I've learned, I've found that that's quite often the case. So, a huge thank you to everyone involved. A couple hours ago I was annoyed that I couldn't find an equivalent for the LaTeX 'cancel' environment/command/style(?)[1]. Now, I'm truly amazed that 'cancel' required a whole package. After discovering that 'underline' and 'strikethrough' were implemented as overlays, I quickly coded up the following: \startuseMPgraphic{MyCancel} draw (0,.2*\overlayheight)--(\overlaywidth,\overlayheight); \stopuseMPgraphic \defineoverlay[mycancel][\useMPgraphic{MyCancel}] \def\cancel#1{\framed[background=mycancel,frame=off]{#1}} Now, I'm sure this is not *quite* the right way to do it. The 'cancel'ed items end up being placed too high on the line, and other spacings are slightly off. But, taking a cue from underlining, I kept the MyCancel graphic and tried: \definetextbackground [cancel] [location=text, alternative=1, background=mycancel] % plus boilerplate for setting up \startcancel\stopcancel ...But, while composing this email, I found what I wanted, which still isn't ``right'' in some sense: \def\cancel#1{\framed[background=mycancel,frame=off,width=fit,height=fit,strut=no]{#1}} I found the parameters for \framed. How to influence hyphenation points in URLs?

Hello, I have many really bad breaking points in URLs (both produced with bib module and with \useURL[bla][http://www.very-very-very-very-very-long-bla.com]\from[bla], or \hyphenatedurl, doesn't matter). Is there any way to influence breaking points in those URLs manually? For normal words there exists \hyphenate{...}, but how to handle urls? (I have the interction turned off if that matters.) I faintly remember some discussion about preparing hyphenation patterns for URLs (like: never try to break http:// or after ~, try to put slash at the end of first part). Would that solve the issue? I sometimes try to replace space and _ in wikipedia URLs and results are totally random, but in general all of them breaking really bad - leaving several letters too much in each line. Letter module béta

Hello everybody, hello Wolfgang, Since I've needed to typeset some letters I'd test the last béta letter module. The result is realy great (the signature is a the right place). I'd just need to use \setuplabeltext[fr][letter:enclosure={P.J.\,:\kern\spaceamount},letter:subject=Objet\,: ] in order to have the right traductions for « subject ». Some small things : — changing the interligne space dont change it in the « fromaddress » — why can't I put all the \setupletter in the same section ? for exemple : \setupletter [place=Paris] [place] [separator={, le }] don't work, and I need to use : \setupletter [place=Paris] \setupletter [place] [separator={, le }] Anyway, thank's a lot, it work's great ! UTF-8 and Sigma

Hello, using \enableregime[utf] \starttext Σ, σ or ς? \stoptext with pdftex prints "Σ, σ or σ?" (but the latter should be a \varsigma and not a \sigma). And with LuaTeX the result is even "Σ, or ?", i.e. the small sigmas disappear completely. Can this be fixed, even though the proper way would be to use a different font? Tobias

Enumeration after section heading in margin

Hello, I am trying to use ConTeXt to create my CV. I have succesfully placed the subject headings in the margin by using: \setuphead [subject] [alternative=text,distance=0pt,command=\MyHead] \def\MyHead#1#2{\inmargin{#1 #2}} When the text that follows the heading is a simple paragraph everything works as expected: Subject Text Text... Text Text... However when the first thing after the heading is an enumeration (or a table, for that matter) the enumeration is not aligned with the heading (it's lower than the heading): Subject * Item1 * Item2 I have tried to remove whitespace around the enumeration with the 'nowhite,joinedup' options but it is still not aligned. Is there a way to align the enumeration (and other non-inline objects) with the heading? Thanks, Alexandros

TeX-MP interaction in mkii and mkiv

Hi, I cannot understand why mkii and mkiv give different output in the attached example modified from Thomas's presentation module. The output of MKII is correct. Resetting equation numbering at each section

Hello, I want figures and formulas to start with number 1 in each section. 1 Section Figure 1 a + b = c (1) a + b = c (2) 2 Section Figure 1 a + b = c (1) Figure 2 For figures this works: \setupfloats [way=bysection,sectionnumber=,separator=] But for equations it doesn't (I get 2.1) though the same parameters seem to be available in command: \setupformulas [way=bysection,sectionnumber=,separator=] Any hints about how to prevent this are welcome. Extra space before itemize

Hi, I am setting up a head which simply puts its contents in a layer, so that I can control where to place the head. If the head is followed by an itemize, I get spurious white space. See the following test file. Page 1 is head followed by text, which is OK. Hi, I have a DOC-file with a lot of quite complex math formulae. Trying to find a good workflow from doc to context I was experimenting with the Word plugin MathType, resp. with the different translator options (any better tip very welcome!). The best results I had with typesetting the code with newmath. Only one kind of formula with arrays gave errors. I attach the respective formula as a doc file here. Does anybody know a better way to deal with this kind of formulae in ConTeXt? Any help very much appreciated!! Steffen

OK, I have more bad (for me) news about the latest beta: it simply refuses to play with some of my fonts; most importantly for me with the Gentium fonts. Whenever I try to compile something with Gentium in it, I get the error message !luaTeX error (file /Users/tas/Library/Fonts/GenAR102.ttf): Invalid glyph index (gid 1699) ==> Fatal error occurred, no output PDF file produced! MtxRun | fatal error, code: 70 I have now compared the latest beta and an older one, and I think the culprit is this line: load otf | featurefile: /Users/tas/texmf/fonts/fea/context/greek- babel.fea luatex then goes on to create luatex-cache/context/408a90c432ceda2c1e4a80ad5d0e5350/fonts/otf/GenAR102(a)greek-babel.tma luatex-cache/context/408a90c432ceda2c1e4a80ad5d0e5350/fonts/otf/GenAR102(a)greek-babel.tmc The thing is, I know that Gentium doesn't work with this fea file; that's why I wrote one specifically for this font. Gentium is nowhere connected to this fea file. When I use an older version, this fea file is not used and GenAR102(a)greek-babel.tma is not created. The newer version creates it, and I have no clue why... Very puzzled Thomas

Hi Hans, the latest beta has a problem with font handling: in my Greek output, the letters "sigma" and "sigmaalt" don't work anymore; they're replaced either by some "undefined" character (box with letter "X" in it) or by empty spaces. I tried to find out where something has changed, but haven't found anything so far. If you don't have an immediate idea what's wrong, I'll try to investigate further. Thomas

Hello, A while back, script=latn has been removed from features=default. It was an extremely sad story, but at that time it was possible to redefine it at least. Now I cannot make it work any more, or at least I'm doing something fundamentally wrong, but I don't get the fi ligature with the following code: \definefontfeature [default] [script=latn,liga=yes,kern=yes,tlig=yes,trep=yes] \definefontsynonym [Garamond-Roman] [AGaramondPro-Regular] [features=default] I have switched to XeTeX for now (\font\a='Adobe Garamond Pro' at 15pt\a works OK), but that's not the solution. Hello, I'm just wondering if there's some recipe about how to simplify the work when icluding other files and images in projects, when one is compiling from different folders. For example: articles/08/01/art-one.tex (product) articles/08/01/art-two.tex (product) articles/08/02/art-three.tex (product) articles/08/02/art-four.tex (product) articles/08/magazine_2008.tex (product) components/funny.tex (component) img/08/01/img-1.png img/08/01/img-2.png img/08/01/img-3.png img/08/02/img-2.png magazine_all.tex (project) layout.tex (environment) If I do > cd articles/08/01 > texexec art-one then images are expected to be set up as ../../../img/08/01 and if I need to \input somefile from the project (like "funny.tex"), even if that's a component, I need to provide some explicit location. But then I would want to compile > cd articles/08 > texexec magazine_2008 and then all relative paths break, even when specified in subfolders. Now I would need to set up ../../img/08/01 as image directory. Even though the article provides relative path, that path is now relative to the document I compile one folder lower in hierarchy, not to the document that defines the relative path (which is a bit weird, but I understad why it is so). Also ... is there some elegant way to include "funny.tex" from an article, so that it will work both in article and magazine? (I'm thinking about putting \def\projectroot{../../} at the top of files, but that's a bit ugly.) I can solve the problem in my own ways with some weird macros, like the ones that set image directory to "directory={../../../img/08/01,../../img/08/01,img/08/01}" at the top of every article file, but my solutions are all a bit ugly. (Another thing is that it needs to be flexible enough, so that I don't need to change every single article in case that I decide to move images or articles to another location in project.) If some elegance exists to solve that, I would welcome any hints or suggestions. But as I said: it's all solvable in one way or another, so this is just a low-priority request for sharing your ideas. It's been a while since I used Context so I want to download some basic manuals to refresh my memory and learn new things. On my Windows machine I can view/navigate and download manuals from the http://www.pragma-ade.nl/showcase.pdf page, but on my mac this doesn't work. In the Safari browser, nothing happens if I click on the "manuals" link. In Firefox, the showcase PDF is downloaded and I can open it. After allowing the file to go full screen, I get error messages for the links "there was an error opening this document/ the file cannot be found', execpt on the "quit" link ;-) Is there a simple thing I should change to make it work on the mac as well? Hi, In MkIV of last beta version (2008.10.03 23:45), when I was loading certain Chinese fonts such as AdobeSongStd-Light or SimSun, LuaTeX happened to be interrupted. These problems which include lousy code of certain Chinese fonts in pdf that is generated by MkIV, seem to connect with LuaTeX. >From revision 1525 to 1535, LuaTeX can always work very well except text of using SimSun font is lousy code in pdf. After cleaning $TEXMFCACHE, I compiled revision 1540 of LuaTeX and used it, and then I encountered fails to load almost Chinese fonts. However, if I don't clean $TEXMFCACHE generated by revision 1535 of LuaTeX and use revision 1541, there is no any problem.

Dear all, I hope that you understand a little bit off topic question. Recently, I installed smultron and set it up to use ConTeXt Minimals following the instruction in ConTeXt wiki. Basically it worked. But the command result window didn't properly show what is going on during the compilation. But it appeared some time but it didn't some other time. I couldn't figure out when it did and when it didn't. Even in the case that it showed the result, it didn't refresh after I compiled the same file again. Does some one help me to fix it? Thank you. Hi, in MkIV hz is bound to the found (thus the speed increase). Now, how do I assign different degrees of hz to different areas? Mojca, I tried running Miktex2.7->Settings->Formats, selecting cont-en.pdftex, then tried changing input filename from cont-en.ini to cont-en.tex, but I was "not allowed to change built-in" something or other. I tried adding a new format, calling it cont-en, compiler pdftex, and input filename cont-en.tex, but when I tried to build, it erred with: No pages of output. Hi, Hans: When I used AdobeSongStd-Light as my main font and used LMRoman10-Regular as the fallback font, I found that the spaces between Chinese characters and English words are perfect, for example: \definefontfeature [zh][mode=node,script=hang,lang=zhs] \definefontsynonym [zhserif][name:AdobeSongStd-Light][features=zh] \definefontfallback [westernserif] [name:LMRoman10-Regular][0x0000-0x0400][force=yes] \definefontsynonym [song][zhserif][fallbacks=westernserif] \definefont[myfont][song at 12pt] \starttext \myfont 中文 English 之间的间隔\par 中文~English~之间的间隔\par 中文\;English\;之间的间隔 \stoptext But, when I used SimSun instead of AdobeSongStd-Light, the spaces between Chinese characters and English words became larger and ugly. In previous example, spaces in the first two lines of text are larger than those in the third one, even the spaces between English words also become larger. I remerbered what you said, the fallback fonts can be independent of the main font. However, I think the spaces between the words are releated to the main font. Hi, The minimals still have LuaTeX, Version snapshot-0.29.0-2008072108. With the latest minimals, I get the following error ! LuaTeX error ...tyam/tex/texmf-context/tex/context/base/font-def.lua:684: attempt to call field 'definefont' (a nil value) stack traceback: ...tyam/tex/texmf-context/tex/context/base/font-def.lua:684: in function 'command' which I think is due to the old version of luatex. Best approach for project with three-part headings and table of contents references?

I am trying to figure out how best to use ConTeXt for a project. Essentially I want to format postings on a message board for printing in a book, and provide multiple "tables of contents" for the postings (more information further down, and questions at the bottom). I'm sure that everything I want to do can be done with ConTeXt, but I'm a ConTeXt beginner, and it looks as if there's a lot of complexity to do this. Each post has a title, an author, a date, and the text of the post. I'd like to arrange the information roughly like this: Title of the post Author author - Date date -------------------------------------- Text of the post... text text text text text text. Then I'd like to create a "table of contents" that lists posting titles by date, like this: January 1, 2008 Title title title ........................ 10 Another title .......................... 11 January 2, 2008 Yet another title ..................... 12 Putting the author in there also might be nice, like this: January 1, 2008 Title title title (John Doe).......... 10 Another title (Jane Doe)........... 11 January 2, 2008 Yet another title (John Doe)..... 12 I'd also like to have a "table of contents" that lists posting titles by author, like this Jane Doe A title ..................................... 14 Another title .............................45 John Doe Title title title ............................ 35 Another title .............................40 My questions: 1) How complex is this (for a beginner) to do in ConTeXt? I am very comfortable with Perl, so I thought I could write a Perl script to parse the posts and generate such tables of contents, with lots of \reference, \at, and \about commands. If this needs significant complexity to solve, I would prefer to handle the complexity with Perl, and keep the ConTeXt simple, so I can understand it. 2) Can I (ab)use the existing heading commands (\title, \subject, \setuphead, etc) to arrange and reference the title, author, and date? If so, can anyone provide a hint of how to do the headings and referencing? Will the existing heading commands let me reference the title, author, and date values for use in my "table of contents"? It looks as if I would have to create my own command that formatted the heading information how I wanted it, and set up the three references. I looked at "Alternative mechanisms" in the cont-eni.pdf, but that didn't seem to describe this type of flexibility. 3) If I can use the existing heading commands (question 2), can I also use the existing index and/or table of contents commands (\setuplist, \placecontent, etc)? And like question 2, can anyone provide a hint of how to do it? It looked to me as if a lot of custom ConTeXt code would be necessary, and that I would have to build my own table of contents entry by entry. Thank you very much, Adrian

Mojca, I saw your note on blog.miktex.org: If you still want to run ConTeXt on MikTeX while it has been removed, you may create a file texmfstart.bat in C:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.7 \miktex\bin with the content: @echo off ruby "C:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.7\scripts\context\ruby\texmfstart.rb" "%*" and extract www.pragma-ade.com/context/current/cont-tmf.zip into C: \Program Files\MiKTeX 2.7. Then, update filename database and generate formats, and everything should work again. Mojca I followed this advice, installed texmfstart.bat, unzipped cont- tmf.zip properly, updated the filename database, then got stuck. At the dos prompt: $ texmfstart --help Worked just fine. However, $ texmfstart texexec --help Did not work. What am I missing? If I recall I'll need to do: $ texmfstart texexec --make --all Or some such thing. I was working on a document in which I wanted use a symbol that, acording to the Comprehensive LaTeX Symbol List, goes by the name of \Asterisk or \bigast (see p. 22). I saw, though, that this seems to be missing in ConTeXt. Might it be tucked away in some module, or is it just absent? If it's really not there, what would it take to add it? Hello, It seem's that there's some changes on the « frenchpunctuation front » ! Thank's. I modified my test file and ad more precise rules to the wiki : http://wiki.contextgarden.net/frenchpunctuation I test it with luatex 0.29 and context 2008.09.21 * Strange bug : the space After the openning quote («) is twice bigger than the one before the closing one (»). Look at test 3 * Wolfgang change the wiki about the compose word, but using this (with the syntax compose||word) I get an endash (–) and not the normal sign (-). Test 5 * There should't be space between two sign. Test 2 * The space before the footnote sign is too big (it's clearer with othe fonts). Test 4 As usual, if you need more information, just ask ! ConTeXt to XML or HTML

Hello all, I have been looking for a way to convert from ConTeXt to HTML. I asked for God Google and also I have visited http://wiki.contextgarden.net, and read many times almost all articles. Maybe, I have not undestood the process very well. I could not figure out how to make such conversion yet. I saw many different forms of converting XML to ConTeXt, but I did not see nothing from typing in ConTeXt syntax and get a XML output file. The only program I have noticed that do that is tex4ht. This programs bases its conversion in both .tex and .dvi files. The result is not so exact as the desired. Is there another way to do that? Regards, Betoes

Hi again, I try to get a picture on a page using \externalfigure[name.pdf][width=\textwidth] The image is pushed to the next page, even though there is no text on the current page and the height of the image itself is smaller then \textheight, so it should fit. I don't remember how I was solving such problems so far, but I know that I have always been missing: % maybe even some external file with extremely long code \starttikzpicture{picture name} ... \stoptikzpicture \placefigure{some figure}{\usetikzpicture{picture name}} If that was implemented, maybe \usetikzpicture could be inside an hbox? passing buffer to lua functions

How to prevent this while keeping the lua escape at the same time? Texlive2008 and updating context

After running sudo ctxtools --updatecontext and luatools --generate everything went smooth. But after texexec --make --luatex en I got the following Should I create the cache path /home/mehdi? Anyone wants [another] "I love ConTeXt" T-shirt?

Dear ConTeXt fans, I'm goint to buy another bunch of T-shirts tomorrow and we will reprint them with "I love ConTeXt", in another (hopefully better) printing technique*. If anyone wants [another] T-shirt (or long sleeves) in whatever color that's available in the shop (dark works best), please let me know the size(s) and color(s). [Two tiny photo samples attached.] I'll send them out once in November for 6 EUR + shippment costs (or I can bring them to some conference, like DANTE meeting in Vienna or BachoTeX or ...). Hopefully I'll have the DVDs with videos ready by then as well, so that I will be able to send DVDs to anyone interested in the same package. index in swedish doc (mkiv)

Hi all, I want to have an index in a swedish document, but when I add it I get "unknown" instead of the "letter heads". Minimal file: %%%% \mainlanguage[sv] \starttext Test\index{test} \placeindex \stoptext %%%% Just uncomment the \mainlanguage[sv] and you will get a "t" instead of "unknown" as expected. If there is something that has to be added when it comes to swedish indices I am willing to do that. By the way, this problem does only appear in mkiv, in mkii it works as it should. Has anybody used asymptote without LaTeX?

Hi, It is said that Asymptote has supported PRC format 3D file: http://asymptote.sourceforge.net/gallery/3D%20graphs/ I really wanna give it a try, but once I was building from the svn source, I was told that I don't have LaTeX in my $PATH. I haven't really been using LaTeX for a long time, and I prefer I don't need to install a bunch of LaTeX programs and packages just for a drawing program which, IMHO, only use LaTeX to make nice labels. Is there any workarounds? bug in mkiv - paragraph column in tables

Hi all, The following simple table doesn't work right under mkiv. The baseline of the paragraph (2nd) column is much lower than other columns. The same code works fine under mkii. "\showstructs" shows the difference between the two, but I wasn't too sure how this should be fixed. Hi, I wanted to share some observations from enabling the latest MkIV code (2008.09.24, compiled luatex from svn just now) to run on a new installation of TeXLive 2008 on 64bit Linux. This is my first time trying MkIV. First -- a comment on installing using TeXLive 2008, which hopefully is helpful to others. In my installation I noticed that x86-64/bin/luatools was symlinked to texmf-dist/scripts/context/stubs/unix/luatools. The rsync update process as outlined on garden does not update this file; it updates texmf-dist/scripts/context/lua/luatools.lua. So this needs to be copied (or linked) over to make the update work. The same issues exists with mtxrun. The symptom was a broken "context --make". Now, on to my issues. I am listing anything that used to work in my TeXLive 2007 installation of MkII but fails in 2008 (MkII or MkIV). Items 1-3 were tested on garden as well to ensure it was not an issue in my setup -- 1. \placefloat[here]{none} fails. \placegraphic works instead. This works on MkII. See test_placefloat.tex. 2. MkIV fails due to the \startcolor...\stopcolor sequence embedded in a natural table (see test_color.tex). A working alternative is commented in that file. 3. MkIV will not typeset the file test.tex. It is due to using {style=\switchtobodyfont[tt]} in the table setup. Using [modern,tt] works fine, but this is not necessary with MkII. 4. This is a MkII issue (or maybe it is a pdftex problem?) MkII on 2007, texexec --dvi on 2008, and MkIV all work. The problem is with pulling in an external figure like this -- \externalfigure[/tmp/testfigure] The files /tmp/testfigure.eps and /tmp/testfigure.pdf exist. This should use the full path to find the file, and will pick the eps when creating dvi and the pdf when creating pdf's. As mentioned, this works with every combination I tested except 2008 MkII. Some (not very usable for me) workarounds are -- - use the filename without the path and add the path using \setupexternalfigures[directory=] - specify the .pdf extension (means I cannot typeset to dvi if I want to; I find this useful for previewing with xdvi's auto-reload) - use \setupexternalfigures[directory=/] and use a relative path 5. Just a comment on performance -- I noticed that using MkIV on a complicated document I have took 23 minutes vs. 12 minutes with MkII. I didn't know if MkIV is expected to be slower/comparable/faster at this stage. Anyway, I hope this is useful to other users and to the developers. Best Regards, Brian

Flaky pdf file.

Recent texlive 2008 installed on Linux Slackware 12.0 system. I have a file that I can process via texexec and which shows up fine on my Acrobat Reader, kpdf or xpdf. However another person using (probably) Windows keeps getting corrupt file errors when he tries to read it. switching (named) layouts?

Hi, Is it possible to give a layout definition a name? It would be really helpful to be able to say \definelayout[name=one][...] \definelayout[name=two][...] and then to be able to say: \setuplayout[one] and somewhere else in the document \setuplayout[two] (This would mirror the way it is possible to switch papersizes.) Or is there another way to have different collections of \definelayout settings that can be switched on or off at specific places? What is the best approach? Thanks, Jelle

Can we make font loading much faster?

Hi: The following cases all use second run of context. So there is no font cache time. I use a new installed Windows XP SP3 on a Core 2 Duo 1.68GHz with 1GB mem machine. Only TeXWorks and ConTeXt are installed and running on the machine. I close all pre-installed software (like MSN, IE, etc.) and leave all extra memory for LuaTeX. Only 3 big chinese font, AdobeSongStd-Light, AdobeHeitiStd-Regular, AdobeKaitiStd-Regular are loaded. Magazines might use twenty or more. So if we want to use the standard way (use chinese font as body font, use virtual fonts mechanism to mix the font with latin fonts, use different alternatives for single chinese font) as the zhfonts.tex is presented, the running time here is usually intolerable (more than 3 minutes' loading time with very simple text for three fonts). A simple XeLaTeX file with three font embeding using XeCJK or zhspacing for interchartoken font switching usually runs less than 8 seconds. In this case, all the family (rm, ss, tt) parts (like bf, it, etc) in NFSS are defined. So, I think there should be a way to improve the font loading procedure. Maybe we had made deep copy to every fontsynonym defined here which made the loading time terribly long? Are there some way to mirror all the unchanged part of a new loading font B from a loaded time A and only leave the modified table when A and B points to same physical font? Thanks. Yue Wang

Fonts: Minimals v. Texlive 2007

Thanks to everyone who helped me get the minimals installed. I am having a little trouble. At my home computer, I have the Context installation for Ubuntu 7.04 from the sanjoy tex-live backports. At work I now have the minimals, --context=current, not beta. I expected that the output of these two systems would be nearly identical. They are not. I do not use any special font handling. I let Context handle it all. I use whatever the default fonts are, and use \setupbodyfont only to set fontsize. The same source run on both machines produces slightly different margins and slightly different font sizes. The minimals are smaller (shorter) for the same font size (11 pt). I really would like to get the same output for both systems. Can anyone help with this? -Erich Fickel
