I was able to persuade one user to prepare ConTeXt package for NixOS distro, but, unfortunately, being from Russia he quickly discovered that he minimal example from wiki (http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Russian) does not work, i.e.
\enableregime[utf] \useencoding[cyr]
\definetypeface [russian] [rm] [serif] [computer-modern] [default] [encoding=t2a]
\setupbodyfont[russian] \starttext Мама и Папа % Some Russian characters \stoptext
does transliterate Russian characters.
I do not have any experience working with Cyrillic, so if anyone can provide minimal working example it would be very nice?

Since I just adapted a ConTeXt based business card generator to work with cyrillic type, I can assure that it's possible - with XeTeX or LuaTeX.
There you just need to encode your sources in UTF-8 and use OpenType fonts that contain cyrillic glyphs, like TeX Gyre.

You could also write
% engine=xetex
or
texexec --xtx myfile
As Hraban told you need a font with the symbols.

Indeed. I was the one creating that page. This was before XeTeX/LuaTeX became popular. I then installed the cm-super fonts where cyrillic letters are available and used them more or less as is explained there.
Please update it with the current example. I think everybody agree that the solution from this thread is the way to go.

I can update the wiki, but the question is what about those users not using MKIV or XeTeX?

Should work in MkII if you have cm-super font package installed, but doesn't work for me, so I personally use my own typescript with custom fonts. Maybe someone can help me figure out why ConTeXt doesn't try to generate .tfm's for cm-super? Is there some command to increase verbosity?

This requires cm-super package. Unfortunately after some update this stopped working.
If someone puts me on a right way to start debugging font loading mechanism I'll try to sort this out. Problem is that map files seem to be loaded, fonts are installed in right places but ConTeXt doesn't try to generate tfm. It just always uses default fonts (LM ones with ec encoding). I've tried varous combinations (\setupencoding, fiddling with typescripts) with no difference. Tried this on MkII, as MkIV seem to require even more tuning.

Here is a patched version of type-one.tex that should make this work once again. Please report back, so Hans will know if it is safe to replace the file in the distribution.
