Is this the new official syntax? \chapter[chap:01] Introduction \section Motivation 2. How do I enabled colour links for the bibliography citations? I've tried - You'll have to move/delete t-bib.tex if you're running a recent ver. of the minimals to get the the doc to compile. % env-thesis.tex lines 289-291 \setupinteraction[state=start,style=,color=] \setupinteraction[focus=standard] \placebookmarks [chapter,section][chapter] and % line 3, macros.tex \setupcolors[state=start] % line 8, macros.tex \setupcite [interaction=start, compress=no,color=] %darkgreen] Yet the links are still in black. Here's the pdf; http://filebin.ca/mzxxpc/thesis.pdf or http://filebin.ca/mzxxpc 3. The entries in bibliography outflow into the margins; pages 23 onwards. I don't mind if the line contains huge gaps as long as the entries don't flow into the margins. 4. How do I decrease the linespacing? Cyrillic filenames

Hi, This is a question to dear developers: why can't I use cyrillic filenames, and even spaces in filenames? It is weird to name Russian texts using Latin transliteration. For example, I'd rather have "песня про зайцев. tex" instead of "pesnya_pro_zaicev.tex". Is this possible? Best, Vyatcheslav

ConTeXt problem with page layout

Hi list, I am having a problem setting up the layout of my document with \setuplayout, following the instructions in "ConTeXt an excursion", p 72 and 112. Since I want margin notes I want to specify both the margins and the edges, which I tried to do as follows: \setuplayout[location=middle,leftedge=1cm,rightedge=1cm,leftmargin=3cm,rightmargin=2cm,width=13cm,height=23cm] What I get is: no left edge, left margin 2cm right on the edge of the paper, text 13 cm, right margin 2 cm, right edge 1 cm, empty space 16 mm. Moreover, whatever I change in the parameters, the layout stays the same. Has the command changed? I am using MkII as supplied with MacTeX2008, (not updated because that didn't work either). No italian traslantion in reference

Hi, i put this command in my doc \mainlanguage [it] then when i try to call a figure regefence with \in{figure}[fig:cartoonmodel] in pdf doc i see figure instead of figura (it). I need more setup to allow the italian mainlanguage? cz -> cs language abbreviation change

Dear Hans, I have noticed that the abbreviation for Czech language has changed from 'cz' to 'cs'. Perhaps due to ISO 639-2 compliance. May be the norm is a good reason; but this backward incompatible solution makes all Czech document wrong! Silently without any warning or any error message. Moreover, it makes Czech version of the context beginners manual wrong. I strongly ask you to solve this problem, e.g. to create some synonym mechanism, which enable again \mainlanguage[cz] \language[cz to work. Thank you Vit

Minimals - problems with format: metafun.mp

Hello, In a bit to finally get Wolfgang's present to me (see XML thread somewhere) finally compiled, I update my minimals via the first-install.sh script and run "luatools --generat && context --make" afterwards. How to avoid a page break?

Hi, I have the following in my code: \def\doPutTitle#1{% \startalignment[middle] \bfb \page[bigpreference] \blank[2*big] #1% \page[no]% \blank[big]% \page[no]% \stopalignment \page[no]% }% Why is it still possible that I have a page break after, say, \doPutTitle{some title} (in MkII, in MkIV page breaks fall in different places). Which percentage signs and \page[no]'s are unnecessary here? Also, how to avoid a page break right before an itemization? Adding [intro] seems not to work. And one more thing about pagebreaks: how to avoid a pagebreak right before a \startformula ... \stopformula? And what is the ConTeXt way of setting stretchable vertical glue (e.g. for \blank's, below itemizations etc.)? Bibtex doubt

Different footers for different parts of a project

Hi, yet another question from me;). I have a project divided into products divided into components. When I typeset a component, I want to get it's title (I keep it in a variable) in the footer. If I typeset the wqhole project, I want to have the pagenumber there instead. How do I do it? (I mean what to put in the environment/product/component code?) Problem with MkIV on texlive2008

Hi, I did everything as wiki says, and after "context test-06" I get /usr/local/texlive/2008/bin/i386-linux/mtxrun:9016: attempt to index global 'today' (a function value) What might be wrong? Question about columns and etc

Hello, Now I use my favourite LuaTeX for typesetting song lyrics :) I love the result, but I have problems when I use to columns to make long lyrics fit one page. First of all, the first line of the second column is always one line upper then in the first one. Next, when I turn on \setupinterlinespace[big], it doesnt' affect text in columns at all! And the last, I cannot prevent chorus text from splitting across pages/columns. I see that \vbox does this for verse, but adding it to chorus setup doesn't work. Thank you for any help in advance! Hi, the lua function 'metapost.filterclippath()' in mlib-ctx.lua uses 'flushnormalpath()', which is not global. Moving it to mlib-pdf.lua did work here. Regards, Peter

Problem with itemization (again)

Hi, sorry to be a bit repetitive, but this still doesn't work as expected (in MkII, but see also below): \starttext \startitemize[intro] \dorecurse{12}{% \item \dorecurse{\recurselevel}{This is some intro. }Intro ends here. \startitemize[intro,columns,two] \dorecurse{4}{% \item \dorecurse{1}{This is a test. }End of the test. }% \stopitemize }% \stopitemize \stoptext (see page 2 and 3). I guess nothing wrt. itemizations changed in the new beta (I tested the above example in the online ConTeXt), so it's no surprise, but I still have no clue as to the reasons and any remedies. I use two-column itemizations *a lot*, so this is a serious problem for me... Any ideas how to prevent the unnecessary page break? PS. I have just noticed that this works correctly with luatex!!! And so do unpacked two-column itemizations!!! That's just great!!! So my question now becomes: does this mean that MkII is just obsolete for me and I should upgrade to MkIV? And two more things: 1. I have noticed that "unpacked" itemization in columns has the whitespace between items equal to one line. Is it possible to make it shorter, say half a line? 2. I've also noticed that the second (last?) column of itemization seems *never* to be longer that the previous ones, which seems to be quite reasonable, but sometimes it would be better for it to be one line longer than two lines shorter. Is there a way of e.g. inserting a manual column-break within multi-column itemizations and/or letting the last column be longer? Sorry people for being such a nuisance, but - as I've said - I use itemizations a lot (mainly for different kinds of problem sets for my students or my wife's pupils;)) and these issues appear quite often. Also, I'd like to teach a bit of ConTeXt to my wife, who would like it to *simply work* (she's great, but no TeX hacker;)). Hi, Most of you have probably deduced this, but Hans has released a new version of ConTeXT past friday. New features: * There now is a Persian interface (format) * The whole multilingual subsystem is rewritten and is now generated by a script from a single lua database table. ** Note: ** External modules that define or set system constants ** and system variables will need updating. * New versions of the greek, vim and bib modules * More files have been split into mkii+mkiv parts * The old, dvipdfm style font mapfiles have been removed because newer versions of (x)dvipdfmx support the pdftex-style map format * mkiv now has support for 'special' features like knockout vs overprint and spot colors via attributes For pdftex users, there are not that many changes, but users of xetex of luatex are advised to update a.s.a.p. Last current

Hi, the last current release still contains \latetua in core-two.mkiv for \savetwopassdata and the two modules m-subsub and m-educat use the old mutiligual interface. The collection of third party modules cont-ext contains a too old version (with startconstants/variables) of the letter module, I put a newer version on the garden a few days ago. external figure extension name PDF not supported

Hi, I have a strange error with ConTeXt. This error isn't produced using LuaTeX. The error seems to be in one of the CoTeXt files but I can't understand it. I hope some of you will be able to help me there. Clipping bug in MetaPost with MkIV

Hi, I make a hole in a MetaPost graphic and add a graphic as background but in MkIV I get no hole but the lines I try to remove are still visible. /ModDate (mkiv)

Hi, there is a small bug in the /Info dictionary when using mkiv. The 'ModDate' is written as 'Context - YYYY.MM.DD HH:mm', which results in a blank entry in the 'Document Properties' of the viewer. Anyhow, to avoid preflight problems it would be wise to set /ModDate to the same value and form (p160, PDF Reference 1.7) as /CreationDate (like in mkii). Otherwise you must have trust in the comparison routines of the preflight software (which is no good choice). Just think about PDF/X-4, where all XMP entries (http://www.adobe.com/products/xmp/) are compared with the corresponding /Info entries. Best wishes, Peter

Context using LuaTeX - distribution packaging question

Hello, for openSUSE there are now beta TeX Live 2008 packages available (http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Publishing/) [By Werner Fink, who does also the normal openSUSE packages.] The question is how the ConTeXt with LuaTeX should be best handled. By default, there is no luatex-cache and no (luatex) format. Of cause a user can do: export TEXMFCNF=/usr/share/texmf/web2c # export TEXMFCACHE=somewhere luatools --generate --verbose luatools --ini --compile cont-en but in principle I would expect that the distribution does this already, which saves the TEXMFCACHE per user and makes "texexec --lua" working without requiring to run first all the other commands. Questions: a) Is the TEXMFCNF environment variable necessary or can this also be read by a config file, which is overwritten by the environment variable? Which scripts/executables make use of that environemt variable? b) Is is possible -- as with kpsewhich -- to have a global cache for the format + global directories - and local directories which have then a higher precedence? I mean like: A global directory cache incl. the format files plus if the user creates a $HOME/texmf tree a user $TEXMFCACHE which contains the hashes of the user directory but such that luatex still finds the formats in the global directory? Hello, The family is gone for the week, so I have time to play ... What I'm doing is the following(using the attached files): context --ctx=t-openoffice BoldOnlyContent.xml Which works nicely. I'd like to make this work like so: context --ctx=t-openoffice VersuchBoldOnly.odt but whether I change the respective line in t-openoffice.tex to \xmlprocess{main}{zip://*/content.xml}{} or \xmlprocess{main}{*/content.xml}{} - no luck ... how to do this? Hans let me know how to parse xml styles on the fly, but I fail to generalize this further. When uncommenting the line \xmlval{fo:font-style}{\xmlatt{#1}{font-style}}{} in t-openoffice.tex this doesn't work as expected: context --ctx=t-openoffice BoldAndItalicContent.xml Any hints on how to fix this? \startvariables failed after the current update

Hi there, I haven't updated my ConTeXt distribution for a very long time (for the internet connection problem here) and somehow my network worked, so I use ctxtools --update to make an update. During the updating, I got some error message like "I can't find mult-def.tex" and some other files more. Weird, because I do have those files and kpsewhich can locate them. I just input the needed files WITH the path and seemed OK. To make sure, I made another ctxtools --update and this time no error messages. Load context format at runtime (from luatex)

In fact, I'd like to create a custom format for my own document and I want my format to inherit ConTeXt (mostly because of utf-8 support). \setupfootnotes[n=0,columndistance=3em,] seems to cause a problem with context ver: 2008.10.23 When it's commented out, everything is fine. When it is left in, I get the error below. A problem with itemizations

Hi, I have a problem with \startitemize ... \stopitemize. Sometimes (I have no idea when, but this effect is fully repeatable!) I get a page break just before a \startitemize. It is nested (second level) and follows one line of another item at the 1st level. It seems that adding [intro] won't help. The problem occurs with [columns,two]; I don't know whether this has any influence - when I change the setup (in the preamble) the page breaks fall in different places, and all my 2nd level itemizations are 2nd level (and I have quite a lot of them). Any ideas? I know that the above is rather vague, but it's difficult to prepare a minimal example etc. Also, Hans, do I get it correctly that the itemization code will get rewritten in MkIV? If yes, is there any chance of having unpacked itemizations in 2 and more columns? And any chance of having an explicit column break (or a preference) in multicolumn itemizations? What is the difference between the above? In particular, do I get this correctly: (*) 2SIDE just puts 2 pages onto one sheet, in the following order: 1 2 3 4 ... (*) 2UP prepares a booklet I'm not sure if I understand the rest. I tried 2DOWN, but got only even pages (?). And with 2*2 and 2**2 got the same (?) arrangement, but I'm not sure what it's for. Textbackground with leftframe

Hi! 1) I wanted to color some text inside a columnset-environment. That works fine for text that stays in one column or spans two consecutive ones. But if there's a pagebreak after the first page, only the left column gets the background. From page two on everything is fine again. Embedded fonts question

Greetings all, A sad story: My context-typeset dissertation was printed/distributed by a POD publisher with aweful typographical errors (like all commas in the main font being replaced by an ff ligature). Obviously the printer didn't check their results. The file reads fine both for me and the publisher, but the printer let us know that the file is unprintable due to problems with fonts not being embedded (why they originally printed an "unprintable" file I'll never know). Now as far as I can tell, fonts are embedded. It was made with context MKII, using hz and hanging punctuation, etc. When I look at the document in Adobe Acrobat, and check the document/font details, it gives a list of embedded fonts only. I'm not certain that the printer is in the right, but how can I tell? Is it possible that the pdf was altered when transferred from me to the publisher then to the printer? That compression of the pdf (zip) had any impact? Any other possibilities? What do you need to know to offer advice? ---I can send the file or a part of it if it is needed. Best, David

Hello, Sorry, the wrong mailing list for this question, but I still hope to find some guru here ... On the garden we fetch the version of TikZ from CVS at http://sourceforge.net/cvs/?group_id=142562 (because it often provides the functionality that's not available in stable version, including some very important patches; for example - smooth shading functionaly that Aditya was asking about only works in XeTeX with CVS version and not with the stable one). Apparently some patch broke TikZ support in ConTeXt completely (not only in luatex), but I'm not very confident with working with CVS. Can someone please give me a short hint how to revert to an older version of TikZ from CVS repository? Wrong cache-path with luatex

Hi! Within my luatex-chache directory there is the directory "2afa1e18082b2d9b8e2af9f2c6e925a6". But when I call texexec --lua it searches for a directory called "0aa031a3f94c398f99a9660a610ae9ef". I linked this with the existing one, but now luatex can't find any fontfiles anymore. Running luatex with --fmt=.../2afa1e18082b2d9b8e2af9f2c6e925a6 everything works fine. luatools --generate says alot about 2afa1e18082b2d9b8e2af9f2c6e925a6. I'm using the latest Contextgarden-Beta. Some questions about TeX Gyre support in minimals

Hello Everyone! I've started to experiment with MkIV in ConTeXt minimals recently trying to make TeX Gyre fonts work with as few definitions as possible. Here is the list of problems I've encountered: 1. No small-caps in any font (gyre fonts doesn't have that yet?) 2. adventor have italic but slanted displays as normal (roman) 3. cursor have only roman script (no bold, slanted, etc.) Is this due to lack of fonts in Gyre package, some omissions in type-otf.tex or my typescript definitions are not complete? Invalid UTF-8 sequence in bbl file

Hi all, Taco! I was experimenting with bib module and discovered something which looks like a bug. 'texexec' ('texexec bibtest') runs fine but typesets references ('s' key) incorrectly. As MkIV does not run bibtex on input files automatically, I run 'bibtex' manually once ('bibtex bibtest'), then 'context' ('context bibtest') gives 'Invalid UTF-8 sequence' error. The resulting .bbl is the same in both cases. It seems that 'author' field and 's' key in bbl file are generated incorrectly, while others like 'title', 'city', etc. are fine. See the attached files. picture before \chapter breaking \header \footer setup

Hi all, Another question, this time about \headers and \footers. On the first page of the chapter I have the page number in the footer and on all other pages they are in the header. This works fine, as expected. However I have to include an \externalfigure *before* the \chapter command and I discovered that I have to use \startcombination because otherwise the \chapter moves to the next page. However, when I use \startcombination ... etc \chapter is not longer the first thing on the page and the special header/footer setup is not triggered (apparently \chapter has to come first for that to happen). Now my questions are: 1- Am I supposed to just create these two files and then run context --make cont-pe. 2- Can context accept these two files in UTF-8 encoding. Thanks

Hi, I uploaded a new beta. There are changes in the cached font data but this should not affect runs (apart from some fonts being recached). The memory footprint of fonts is slightly smaller, in otf we now handle multiple unicode -> one glyph situations. As part of redoing structure related code i rewrote the moveable block code which will be part of the major update later this year. It's not yet 100% functional compatible but faster and more flexible. I'm wondering, are there mkiv users out there who use the block features? Hi all, In my project I \input a number of text files into a double-column layout. One of the layout requests is: "no hyphenation over right page breaks allowed". I can't think of a way to do this, but I would be happy if someone knew a way to prevent hyphenation of the last word of the last line in the second column on odd pages. Can I use \startbuffer in other command?

I have two questions: 1. How to define a start-stop command to accept options? I want to define a start-stop command which can accept options (as \startitemize [packed]), however the \definestartstop does not support this. I found a solution in the list: http://www.ntg.nl/pipermail/ntg- context/2007/025969.html Unfortunately, when I use \startbuffer in it, context prints "*" in the terminal and waits for input. So it comes to the second question 2. Can \startbuffer be used in other commands? Strange behaviour with colors and figures

Dear all, as expressed by the title, I have a very strange behaviour between colors and figures. If myfigure is a PNG file with transparency, then the "gris" color is ok with MKII but not with MKIV and XeTeX if the resulting document is read with Adobe Reader on Linux (when read with evince, colors are ok !!!!!). In the latter case, the "gris" color is very dark close to black and the green of myfigure becomes flashy... What should I learn?

Hi, I would like to ask you some advice on what should I learn. Context was the first typography program I used. Then I tried Tex and a little bit of latex. Context is where I get the best results, but what I really would like is something that allows me to do things in my own way, not something that's always great for reasons I don't understand. (Of course, the first documents I would type would not be that good, but I'll learn with time.) I thought Tex could be that, but it's not. I can't use it to create something to fit my (worst) taste instead of Knuth's (better) taste without doing a lot more work than I'm able to do. I also like to write programs (I use a really nice language named Haskell). Do you thing I could get what I want if I write or translate typography functions to that language, and then write programs to generate documents? Where could I find or where could I learn about such functions? Thanks, Maurício

Hi, Let me prefix this first my saying that I'm new to ConTeXT, so apologies if there is an obvious solution to what I'm trying to do or I'm approaching it in the wrong way. I'm trying to style chapter headings so that they are right justified, with a line before them *on the same line*. In other words, the page should look like this, where vertical bars represent the edges of the text width: |------------------------------- 1.1 Some chapter --| Can anyone give me pointers on how to do this? Vertically centered title page

I tried, on one hand, two \vfill, and, on the other hand, \framed[location=middle,align=middle] but without success. The title is always on the top of the text area. Feature Request: \startitemize[text]

Hi Hans, I have always found the space at the beginning of each item in \startitemize[text] to be too large. Currently, this is hard coded to be \emwidth plus \intertwordstretch minus \interwordshrink (line 1132 of core-itm.tex with the comment "new per 2006/10/20"). I always end of copying the definition of complexdoitemgroupitem to my private modules and changing the emwidth in the definition to 0.5\emwidth. Can you please keep this key to be configurable with a key (textinbetween)? BTW, any particular reason not to simply say \removeunwantedspaces\space\ignorespaces instead of \removeunwantedspaces\hskip\emwidth\!!plus\interwordstretch\!!minus\interwordshrink\relax \stopitemgroup uses just the first variant. Hi, at the context meeting it was concluded that there is no reason for mkiv to be fully downward compatible. one thing that i consider removing is the 'background=screen' option from \framed. Changing margins mid-page?

Hi, I'm sorry that the subject isn't clearer. I'm learning ConTeXt at the moment by trying to typeset a copy of my resume. I'd like the format to be something like this (view in fixed width): <Address line 1> <phone number> <Address line 2> <email address> <MY NAME IN LARGE SIZE> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- EDUCATION <Details> <of Degree 1> <Details> <of Degree 2> WORK EXPERIENCE <Details> <of> <most> <recent> <job> <many lines here> <Details> <of> <another> <job> <Yet another job> ANOTHER SECTION <More information> <appropriate for this> <section> My first thought was to have "EDUCATION", "WORK EXPERIENCE", etc as unnumbered sections, and to arrange that section titles would appear in a (very large) left margin. But then I couldn't work out how to have "normal" margins for the top of the page containing my contact information and name. Margins appear to apply to the whole document. So I tried a hack using paragraphs in two columns. The left column is the section heading and the right column is the information. Example: \defineparagraphs[TwoColumns][n=2] \setupparagraphs[TwoColumns][1][width=1.5in] \startTwoColumns \tfb\ss Education \TwoColumns %% details for one degree here \blank[medium] %% details of another degree here \stopTwoColumns The problem with this is that this setup cannot break across pages, so when a section becomes too long it first starts on a new page and then runs off the bottom of that page. Problems with Palatino sans serif

Hi, I'm having problems with Palatino sans serif in my documents. Consider the following small file: \usetypescript[palatino][ec] \setupbodyfont[palatino,10pt] \starttext \ss Hello world! {\tfa\ss tfa} {\tfb\ss tfb} {\tfc\ss tfc} {\tfd\ss tfd} \stoptext On live.contextgarden.net this renders correctly, with sans serif text and appropriate character sizes. On my local system, though, all the text is serif and at the same size. There is no size variation with \tfa, \tfb, etc. If I remove all the \ss commands then the sizing works again. I'm using MacTeX 2008. Here are my version strings from texexec: This is pdfTeXk, Version 3.1415926-1.40.9 (Web2C 7.5.7) ConTeXt ver: 2008.04.11 00:07 MKII fmt: 2008.10.11 int: english/ english What is wrong with my installation (or my document)? Hi Taco, is it possible that luatex 0.30.1 is a little bit broken? When I try to process an xml file with it and the latest beta, I get no pdf output (but also no errors; it simply doesn't process the contents). Downgrading to luatex 0.30.0 solves this problem; I get the expected output. Thomas

Sample file (xml_test.tex): I have some custom XML text (trivial) + a not-so-complicated xsl transformation (a part is included within the test file). I know there is verb-xml but... I need to improve it to support xpath expr. More over, I want to preserve the initial indentation. The point is now, how to improve verb-xml to support xpath expressions ? I'm working with Mark II... Should I switch to Mark IV if I want to write a new XML verbatim support (with lua)? + the bonus question: I want to add some support for the RelaxNG Compact syntax, should I follow the procedure described on the wiki or switch to Mark IV ? Hello! I'm using context-minimal version: 2008.10.01 19:13 and have a generally question. I'm writing several documents with similar structure and design and have collected all common settings in "settings.tex" like following: \startenvironment settings ... ... ... \stopenvironment and just do the usual invoking by in anything.tex \environment settings \starttext ... ... ... \stoptext I've installed the "minimals" structure in /home/$USER/context/... on my ubuntu 8.04 machine. Now to the question: Where in this "structure" do I place "settings.tex" so it can be found by context from anywhere in my document-structure? I suppose I should do something like "context --make" after placing the file. If I do the usual upgrade what happens then? Is there a more efficient way doing similar tasks, like writing a module? XeTeX old style numerals

Hi guys, Why doesn't this definition use the old style numerals that come with the font? It seems to use the latin modern font when I try to use \os. Small caps are working fine. My attempt to update my ConTeXtMinimals using ./first-setup.sh failed. The message reported was: mkiv lua stats : loaded fonts - none ! Reading the source...?

Hi, assume that I would like to read some parts of the ConTeXt source (to learn something interesting, to learn how to do that-and-that in ConTeXt, or just for fun;)). Where do I start? I mean: what is the non-terribly-difficult way for the beginner? I have rather good expertise in plain TeX and also some in LaTeX (if this helps). Inleft text not verticaly aligned

Hello I tried to get some sections without any title and with numbering in the margin. Labelling figures

Hi, what is the best method to add labels to a figure; I want them not only on the figure but their position should be relative to the figure size. Arabic script bug in MKIV

Hi everyone At last I could install minimal context to use the latest luatex (0.30.1) with latest cont-tmf release. Thanks. I don't know if the following is a luatex or Context bug. Sorry if here is not the right place to report this. After compiling the following lines I faced two problems in the output. 1- In the first line words get mixed. 2- In the second line only 456 appeared but it should be 0123456789. The second problem occurs for the specific font that I have used and I can resolve it by using another font. The problem is that in the font, the character ۱ for example is assigned to two unicode characters, one for U+0661 (arabic digit one) and also for U+06F1 (farsi digit one). But MKIV doesn't know this approach. In fact, only digits 4,5, and 6 are different in farsi and arabic so they appeared in the output correctly. XeTeX knows this kind of character assignment. height of balanced columnset?

Hi all, Is there a way to get the value of the height of a columnset after it is balanced? I'm looking for some sort of "\columnsetheight" that I can reuse as height=\columnsetheight in a \framed command in a layer. Hope this makes sense, or is the content of a layer supposed to be static?
