What to do when ConTeXt not revealing the error details?

I have a very large document that, when compiled, produces a PDF, but reports the error "mtx-context | fatal error: return code: 1". The PDF can open, but after about 100 pages in, the content starts appearing all in the wrong place. Usually when I compile, it says there is an error, and I just scroll up until I find the details. I've scrolled through the output, and *.log file, but cannot see anything that looks like an error. It could be that just because the document is so long (about 1200 pages), I can't find the error among the huge logs, but I looked through them all carefully. How can I isolate the error when ConTeXt isn't showing it? Is there some setting for showing only errors, or revealing more details about an error? --Joel

something’s wrong with \definefontfallback

Latest LMTX, probably an error in mkxl/s-fonts-show.mkxl: \starttext \showbodyfont \showbodyfontenvironment % error! As you can see, the font class is called \quotation{\fontclass} and the bodyfont is typeset from \quotation{\fontname\font} in \the\globalbodyfontsize. \stoptext Hraban

"true" units in LuaMetaTeX

Hi Hans, The unit scanner in LuaMetaTeX fails for any of the "true" dimensions. The following example produces different results when processed by LMTX and MkIV. How to set the vertical spacing between a sequence of images?

I have code like this which randomly pulls a page from `comic2.pdf` and displays it, scaled to fit \textwidth, then displays four more random pages afterwares. \starttext \dorecurse{5}{ \placefigure[force, none]{}{\framed[frame=off]{\externalfigure[comic2.pdf][page=\randomnumber{1}{34}, width=\textwidth]}} }\stoptext The problem is I need to adjust the vertical space between the images. It seems to be set to some lineheight or such, but I need the distance between each image to be at 1/50th or 0.02 of \textwidth. ...though the last image can have the ordinary gap afterwards. How can I se the vertical spacing between this sequence of image to 0.02\textwidth? --Joel

Hyphenation in multi-language projects

Hi, please have a look at this minimal example. The idea is to set the hyphenation for certain words regardless of the language that is used in the surrounding paragraphs. In this example it should stay: «steff-en» How do i set this to all non-english paragraphs (without using \hyphenation on each language-switch)? Hi everybody, With the latest lmtx, my page backgrounds don’t work any more. I think Otared mentioned that the simpleslides module is having problems. I’m trying to figure out what is happening, but I don’t see any warnings or errors, just unexpected results (which is not a good thing). I’m starting with the fundamentals. Here is a fairly minimal example: compile with context --luatex to see the expected result and with lmtx to see what is wrong. issue with variable font

I attach the generated PDF document from the source above. The variable font from Commissioner can be downloaded from https://github.com/kosbarts/Commissioner/releases/download/1.000/Commission…. ConTeXt seems to misread the font strokes (paths [or whatever the right name might be]), since Inkscape has no problems with it. Could anyone be so kind to confirm the issue? Formula has excess vertical spacing when in two column itemize

Hi List, I am getting better at adjusting the space in enumerations, but I just put a formula inside an enumeration, and the formula’s vertical spacing became excessive. Hi, I updated lmtx ... there are a few fixes for issues reported on the list. In the perspective of updating math the - otherwise unchanged - mkiv variant has also been updated a little. No new commands, just some (already old) experimental font related features gone and replaced by a combined one inspired by what we do in lmtx. In our opinion on the average it should not come out worse. Spacing in \unit

Hi list, I made a small example with all of the issues I am trying to fix for the \units command. The first formula below uses the \unit command, but produces strange spacing. Should be a thin space. - No space between the units and the following symbol (+ and = above). Should be appropriate “bin" or “rel" space. - Too much space around the \cdot in the units. Should be treated like an “ord" when used to separate units. - Too much space around the \times in the scientific notation. Should be treated like an "ord" when used in scientific notation. (I'm not sure there is consensus on this.) Some of these seemed like things I could fix myself, so I dug into phys-dim.mkxl to see what I could do. The good news is that I didn’t break anything. The bad news is that nothing I did seemed to have any effect – including deleting phys-dim.mkxl entirely! I double checked that I was working on the same installation used for typesetting. Is the code used for \unit now somewhere else? These issues only occur in math mode, and \unit handles comma separators correctly, unlike \digit. I’d like to get some sort of temporary patch for at least some of these issues, even if I need to write it myself. I use \unit everywhere in physics problems sets for students and in keys that I share other teachers. Any guidance is appreciated! Gavin P.S. Floating Figure in framed-environment

Dear ConTeXt Users I am relatively new to context and I am suffering with a problem with the framed environment. I want to use a framed textbox for Definitions in my script. I also want to use floating figures. But this does not work and I haven’t found out why. Maybe I totally use it the wrong way. TeXGyre Heros on Firefox

Dear all, there were some discussions on pdf viewers on the list and I know that things are not always fine. I now have a problems with the Firefox pdf viewer and TeX Gyre Heros. The font looks uneven in FF, no problems elsewhere. When I scroll into the pdf to set the display to 150% or more the font shows up just fine. So it seems to be a display problems with firefox. I tried several pdf versions no change. Perceptrons

Okay, they aren't _real_ perceptrons, but fancy parameterized trees connected on a hex grid, coded with MetaFun and Lua. Hans, your simplifications on the atantwo function also didn't work for all cases. There was a single edge case that didn't determine the correct angle. Don't know why. Cheers!

synctex problem

At the top of a single source file, I have the lines: % !TEX root = prd_Aestimatio-0301.tex % the root file % !TEX TS-program = ConTeXt2021 % !TEX useAlternatePath % !TEX useConTeXtSyncParser \setupsynctex[state=start, method=max] Syncing works well enough—though I can see no difference between method =min and method=max, both highlight only a few words and not the entire text to be synced, but perhaps my expectations are out of line. When I have these lines at the top of a component file and typeset the product file, I get a rootfile.synctex file, but syncing itself goes awry. Nothing happens when I sync from the PDf file to the component file, and when I sync from the component file to the product PDF, I get the correct page but no highlighting. I am using TeXShop ver. 5.03— sync method: Both Pdf Sync and Search Alternative Path: /Users/bowen1/Applications/LuaMetaTeX/tex/texmf-osx-arm64/bin and also the latest ConteXt (ver. 2022.10.15 10:37 LMTX) under macOS 12.6 (Apple M1 Pro chip) Note: the product file has only one component file for now. I suspect that I am missing something but am not sure where to look or what to do now. Any guidance will be much appreciated. Alan

ToC filler dots not aligned

Hi, If I typeset a table of contents with the latest version of ConTeXt on my computer (2022.09.11 20:44 LMTX), the filler dots used in list alternative C aren’t aligned (i.e., they don’t end flush next to the page number). Typesetting the same file with the online version on ConTeXt Garden (2021.10.28 10:19 LMTX) results in the filler dots being right-aligned with the page numbers (as they should). I had a similar issue back in April 2021 which got resolved by an update. Since I haven’t updated in a while, I can’t say in which version the behaviour changed back, unfortunately. Here’s a working example of my code: \setupcombinedlist[content][alternative=c] \starttext \completecontent \chapter[title={First chapter}] \chapter[title={Second, longer chapter}] \chapter[title={Third chapter}] \stoptext Any help is greatly appreciated. lmt_outline not rendering properly

How to make something appear to the right of every paragraph?

I'd like to add some area for readers to write in the margins of some text. This would leave three lines, like this to the right of the text. __________________ The passage would take up about the left 60% of the text and the margin note space about 30% of textwidth, so no need to use the margins. Though its easy for me to implement this code using some \thinrules and manually dropping macros in the text, is there some way ConTeXt can be told to just add them to right of every paragraph (at the start of the paragraph)? Sample: This is some text ________ that is written in ________ the passage and ________you can see the th-ree lines to the right.The text in the para-graph continues eventhough there arejust three lines tothe right. Here is another par- ________agraph. ________ ________ Here is yet another ________paragraph. You can ________see it also has the ________three liens. This is just for a segment of the book, not every paragraph in the book. --Joel

LMTX generates PDFs with non-working fonts on real printers

Hi, I use LuaMetaTeX 2.10 20220918 + ConTeXt LMTX 2022.09.11. Here's a tiny test document, I disabled PDF compression but it also doesn't work with the default settings. \setupbackend[level=0,compresslevel=0] \starttext Just a line of text. \stoptext When I print this "directly" (i.e. sending the raw PDF to the printer) on a Ricoh MP3053 or on a Samsung CLP-680DW, I just get an empty page. The PDFs render fine on every PDF reader I could find. Conversion to PostScript with pstopdf (poppler-22.07.0) and then sending the PS renders the document correctly on the printer. PDFs generated directly from Context MKIV from TeXLive 2022 using LuaTeX 1.5 render fine on these printers. I've also printed PDFs from pdfTeX in the past fine. I attached the non-working 'foo.pdf.mkix' and the working 'foo.pdf.mkiv' file. I tried to disable font subsetting to debug this further, but I couldn't figure out how to do it. \text{...} inside \sqrt is tiny

Hi List, When I use text inside a radical, the text is script-script size. $\text{Radius} = \sqrt{\text{Area}/\pi}$ It should be normal size. Any ideas for a fix? I stumbled on this issue when working with \units, but it is not specific to units. Thanks! Gavin

This is a very long line followed by an ugly linebreak, not \quotation{supercalifragilisticexpialidocious} \stoptext The macro-quoted text is not protruded. I fixed this locally with a macro \def\q#1{\protrusionboundary1\quotation{#1}} Should this be default? But the missing hyphenation I have to add myself with \-. Help test a LMTX bug fix: tweaks in PDF generation

Hi, last week we had a long thread about non-printing PDF on this list and together with Hans I tracked down the issue and we found a fix. Since it changes some details of how PDFs are generated by LMTX, we'd like to test this change first on a wide range of software and printers. So please: Try to preview and then try to print the attached PDF; and report back if either preview or printout does not look like the attached reference PNG image (i.e. something is missing, the fonts look different, or have wrong relative size.) If you use other PDF tools in your workflow, please also check they continue to work as before (and just as well as with MKIV-generated PDFs). TOC colors and in-page anchors

Moreover, when I click s4, it jumps to page 2 without locating the section precisely within the page. This is not the case when using the latex hyperref package. ConTeXt Standalone does not works on macOS Monterey with Apple M2 chip

Hello list, I'm trying to install ConTeXt Standalone on my Mac (macOS 12.6 Monterey and Apple M2 chip) but at the end of the installation the ConTeXt-MkIV folder (where I install Standalone) on the disk weighs only 7MB (the tex tree is created, but its folders are empty). I've never had a problem installing it on my old computer (Intel processor). Do you know if it is a known problem? These are the commands I used (taken from the wiki): rsync -av rsync: //contextgarden.net/minimals/setup/first-setup.sh . sh ./first-setup.sh --modules = all --fonts = all --goodies = all --context = latest --engine = luatex Where am I wrong? LMTX installation, on the other hand, should be successful (the folder weighs 297.8 MB, as much as the Standalone one should weigh). Thanks in advance. Tommaso

How to get line numbering to match block quote position?

I have some text that is a block quote, but also has line numbering: \setuplinenumbering[step=3] \starttext \startblockquote \startlinenumbering \input knuth \stoplinenumbering \stopblockquote \stoptext The line numbering is appearing in the left margin as if the text were not a block quote. How can I tell it to move the numbering closer to the text, since the text is not up against the margin, being block quote text? --Joel

\setuparranging values for perfect bound A5 on A3?

I have a book to be perfect bound[1] and I'm trying to work out what imposition to use. The printer would like 4 A5 pages laid out on A3 e.g. +---+---+ | | | | a | b | | | | +---+---+ | | | | c | d | | | | +---+---+ so that he can cut the paper and simply stack a, b, c, & d on top of each other and then put them in the binding machine[2]. If the book is 40 pages long, say, then stack 'a' has page 1 on the top, page 2 on the reverse, then the next sheet has page 3 and 4, and so on down to the last sheet which has page 9 on the front and page 10 on the back. Stack 'b' would have page 11 on the front, 12 on the back and so on, so that each stack has a quarter of the book. Is this something LMTX can do and if so what combination of \setuplayout and \setuppaper do I need to use? If they can be printed in reverse order then great but I assume the printer can do that fairly easily. If not, is there a recommended external program that can do it? I've tried \setuplayout[4*2] and XY with 2x2 but neither output is what I need. Thanks in advance. Has the handling for the apostrophe character entity changed recently? Spacing issue with \digits in math mode

Hi list, I have been trying to understand the workings of the \unit command, which is producing strange spacing in math mode. In an effort to be more systematic, I began by investigating the related \digit command. \digit works well in text, but in math mode the comma separators produce unwanted space. \digits {12,345.67} vs.\ $\digits {12,345.67}$ Below is a one page test document, derived from the code in phys-dim.mkxl. I think a simple fix would be to treat the comma as “ord” inside a number, but I don’t know if that is easy or not. I’d also like the space removed from around the “x" in scientific notation, which might be accomplished the same way. Thanks for all the work on spacing in math! Hi, fetching images per URI was supported (and is also documented in the wiki), but with LMTX 2022.09.11 and one of \externalfigure[http://tug.org/images/logobw.jpg] or \externalfigure[https://picsum.photos/300/200] I only get the usual grey box. No error message. Do I need any setup, was this discarded in LMTX, or what’s wrong? Hraban

Missing letters and numbers in printout

Hello, I have a document that includes some grids (drawn with \grid) as well as alphanumeric information (letters and numbers) which contents (the info, not the grids) I modify every year and then print it out. I've been using it without any problem for a few (maybe 4 or 5) years but, this time, only the grid showed up on the printout, but none of the letters or numbers would, using the same printer I used every time before. I always copy the PDF file into a USB stick that I bring to the (departamental) printer, plug it in the printer and directly print from it. I tried printing the same file (from the same USB drive) into a different printer, this time connected to a computer, and sending the file from it, which worked just fine. My guess is that the first printer in missing the font the document uses, whereas the second printer received the font from the computer (Devuan Linux), which has the appropriate font. Could that be correct? In all previous ocasions I used the version of ConTeXt included in Texlive on Devuan, but a few months ago I decided to install ConTeXt using the official distribution instead. Could that explain the change in behaviour I'm seeing? Could it be that the previous versions I used somehow embeded the fonts into the PDF file but the current one doesn't? And, if that's really the case, how could I force the font to be included into the PDF file? I remember I read something like that a very long time ago (probably about LaTeX, not ConTeXt), but I haven't found how to do it now in a few searches on the documentation. Hi, I'm trying to get tikz-cd to run on LMTX and some examples already work fine, but I had a problem with text on arrows. I have patched TikZ for now to match for this alternate string too. But perhaps it would be better for compatibility to agree with the original TeX \meaning strings for the 7-bit ASCII subset at least. I found another minor nit that's not really triggering a bug but still a difference to LuaTeX: \eTeXrevision should expand to .2, but it expands to 2 in MkIX. There is some code out there which uses constructions like \number\eTeXversion\eTeXrevision or even \ifdim 0\XeTeXrevision pt > 0.9996pt As LMTX doesn't care about this macro, this should be easy to adjust. strange issue with hyphens

Dear list, I’m experiencing a weird issue with hyphenation: \setuphyphenation [method=traditional] \starttext \hyphenatedword{a-legibility-c} \sethyphenationfeatures [strict] \hyphenatedword{a-legibility-c} \stoptext I need the setup hyphenation commands to get underscore hyphenation. But how can I make that strict hyphenation features behave as standard hyphenation ones? I mean, that the first hyphen doesn’t get doubled and that hyphenation is also enabled after the first hyphen. I don’t know whether the strict hyphenation features are misbehaving here or I am missing something very basic here. Many thanks for your help, Pablo

Command for specifying et al limit

Dear list, I am trying to specify that 'et al’ should be appended after the first author if paper has multiple authors. It seems from the mkiv-publications.pdf manual that it should work like this but it doesn’t. lmtx status

Hi, At the ctx meeting we released luametatex, that is, the source code is now in the context zip (so it grew a few MB). At the same time Mojca set up some contextgarden repositories on github. We're working on a setup for users to generate older snapshots, if needed (for instance because there are platform changes). She's also working on cmake based installation helpers. One of the things we did was pruning the fonts that are part of the installation. With a few exceptions the type one fonts were dropped, which is most noticeable for math. There is no need for px and tx fonts, they served their puspose in the transition from old style t1 fonts to opentype math (when we started with mkiv; we could have dropped them already). We're looking into antykwa math as well as in alternative script and calligraphic math alphabets so eventually virtual math from t1 construction can be dropped completely (in principle if can be integrated in the tweak mechanisms) because it is not wirth the effort to make them better. That means that we will ship some additional companion fonts. There are math times fonts but they are currently not free and there is some effort going on to turn them opentype so we can ditch their setups too (we can't test anyway; to some extend that is also true for minion math). High on the agenda is euler (in combination with pagella). This also relates to upgraded mixed script and calligraphic support in math. It actually means that enabling alternative alphabets will happen a bit differently (more naturally integrated as we introduced dedicated ranges of slots). Again a side effect is that we have more granular math glyph properties (opentype math is too limited but basically frozen so we have to get over that and move on). We (Mikael and me) also try to compensate for the ommissions and weird things in unicode math but it will take some time before we have that all documented. One of the next uploads will have the pruned / upgraded texmf tree (one can always install more in the local tree of course). At some point installing from the garden (or from a git clone) will also be supported (basically anyone can host a lmtx install). For the next texlive we hope to switch to lmtx as default and that also means that luametatex is the runner then. One can (as currently in lmtx) always run luatex with "--luatex". Als-in-all it's a lot of work but we're getting there. If I’m not totally wrong, "savebuffer" (https://github.com/contextgarden/context/blob/main/tex/context/base/mkxl/bu…) may be just replacing new lines with "\n" in the original buffer (https://github.com/contextgarden/context/blob/main/tex/context/base/mkxl/bu…) The function string.replacenewlines() is defined at https://github.com/contextgarden/context/blob/main/tex/context/base/mkiv/ut…. If I’m not totally wrong about savebuffer replacing newlines with "\n", I wonder how to create a temporary buffer with such a replacement, so that it could be hashed later. Spacing in \unit

Hello list, I have a few questions about space produced by the unit command. Consider this MWE \starttext \unit{3.00e8 kg m/s} $\unit{3.00e8 kg m/s}$ \stoptext The dot between “kg” and “m” has different spacing depending on whether the \unit command is in text or math mode. I think that the tighter spacing in the first one, in text, is correct. I personally would also like less space around the \times. To me, the number 3.00e8 should be typeset more like a single number, rather than like a product of 3.00 and 10^8. I am probably in the minority here. If \unit and \digit had an option for tighter spacing around the \times, I’d use it, but the current output with more space is probably what most people expect and want. Perhaps something like [scispace=tight]. Finally, \unit does not play nicely with surrounding spaces. For example: $2\pi\,\unit{3.00e8 kg m/s}$ causes a fatal error: tex error > tex error on line 9 in file ./Untitled.tex: Incompatible glue units (case 1) <macro> \phys_units_direct #1->\begingroup \the \everyunits \ifdim \lastskip >\zeropoint \settrue \c_phys_units_dospace \removelastskip \fi \c_phys_digits_method \unitparameter \c!method \relax \ifmmode \else \dontleavehmode \fi \edef \currentunit {#1}\always\edef \unitlanguag <line 3.9> $2\pi\,\unit {3.00e8 kg m/s}$ Using \thinspace produces the same fatal error. Putting the 2\pi after the \unit{…} can also cause surprises. $\unit{3.00e8 kg m/s}\times 2\pi$ produces a \times that is right up against the “s”. Is there an "align with item on facing page" option?

Is there a way to align text with an item on the facing page? I'm typesetting author biographies for a book and I'm doing two per page. The author's name appears on a line of its own in \tfa size and then the bio text follows. Ideally I'd like their names aligned so that all four (on a two page spread) appear nicely symmetrical. Currently I'm using \godown[\dimexpr80mm-\pagetotal] (for A5 pages) between each pair which works nicely in that if the first biography is too long it overlaps and I know to edit it to be shorter. However, if the second biography is a little long, it pushes the first back up the page a little - maybe only one line - and then it no longer aligns with the the one on the facing page. If I could somehow tell ConTeXt to vertically align the author names then that might do the job? I've tried using two frames above each other with fixed min and maxheight but then I can't get the author's thumbnail picture to place properly and have the text wrap around it. Hello, last week I learned something about MetaPost at the context meeting. Thanks Taco! First a little background: I write a lot of documentation and sometimes I need to include a picture with annotations. Until now I used a drawing program to add text and arrows. This has one disadvantage, these annotations are not translated. I have to prepare a set of pictures for every language. Well, that changed last week. Hi, With the latest upload (2022-09-16 14:41) I wanted to compare some older projects that I've used with MKIV to the LMTX 2.10.00. In one of which I am using the Lato 2.0 font ( https://packages.debian.org/sid/fonts-lato) With MKIV I get the correct output but LMTX complains about not being able to find the font. There seems to be an issue with the typescript file type-imp-lato.mkiv. Hi everyone who was interested in participating in the meeting remotely, I just recognized I forgot to include some addresses in the participants address, thus some information didn’t reach the adressees. The DSL connection here in Dreifelden is very weak and unreliable – even if streaming works sometimes, usually it’s just enough for email. Yesterday we streamed for one guy via mobile connections, but those who offered their phones for it have now mostly used up their data volume and need the rest for themselves. We suspected the Wifi to be the bottleneck, but when I bought and installed an ethernet cable, it wouldn’t get better. I’m very sorry, but we can’t keep that up. Hraban

When trying to download the context distribution for linux and 64 https://lmtx.pragma-ade.nl/install-lmtx/context-linux-64.zip i get a warning about missing security: HTTPS-Only Mode Alert Secure Site Not Available You’ve enabled HTTPS-Only Mode for enhanced security, and a HTTPS version of lmtx.pragma-ade.nl is not available. Learn More… What could be causing this? Most likely, the website simply does not support HTTPS. It’s also possible that an attacker is involved. If you decide to visit the website, you should not enter any sensitive information like passwords, emails, or credit card details. If you continue, HTTPS-Only Mode will be turned off temporarily for this site. Is there a (simple) solution?

Dear all, I didn’t test “\startcolumnset … \stopcolumnset” for some time, because I got error whenever I tested it under Mac OS Big Sur. However, two days ago, I tested it, and found that it was working. I install updated version today and run a test file again. Finally, I get an output without error! How can I write a digital book that doesn't have to be heavily modified in order to become a physical book? I want almost no modification at all.
