Hi Hans, as already mentioned in a previous thread (https://mailman.ntg.nl/pipermail/ntg-context/2022/106713.html) I think it might be useful to have an identifier for any language, such as in: \setuphyphenation[method=traditional] \registerhyphenationexception[*][macOS] \registerhyphenationexception[any][macOS] \registerhyphenationexception[it][macOS] \startbuffer \currentlanguage: \hyphenatedword{macOS} \stopbuffer \starttext \startTEXpage[offset=1em] \getbuffer \language[it]\getbuffer \stopTEXpage \stoptext I think this is better than having other commands to add hyphenation exceptions for all languages. New c-o-w: The XMas gift for ConTeXt users

Hello ConTeXt community! I'm Zdeněk Svoboda, a master degree student at Mendel university in Brno. I've been using ConTeXt for a while now and have always been impressed by its capabilities and the helpfulness of this community. For my thesis project with Tomáš Hála as the supervisor, I've developed an online application for working with ConTeXt. The main goal was to create an application capable of compiling ConTeXt source right from the browser but I thought that it's not enough and added a few features or tools on top of that. Functions of the application include: - User accounts to save files and access them from other computers. - Editor with syntax highlighting and autocompletion for ConTeXt command. - Generating PDF document and previewing it directly from the browser. - Layout designer to customize the layout of their documents with a variety of options and mouse resizability of each layout element. - Table designer for creating and customize tables with alignment and border settings, colors, merging and splitting cells eg. - Lists designer with a simple interface to customize lists. - Help function for ConTeXt commands (hidden under the "?" button) Developing this application was a great learning experience for me, and I faced a number of technical challenges along the way. For example, having to dig through the XML document to extract all the information needed for the "?" help function. I'm excited to share my project with the ConTeXt community and hope that it will be a useful resource for someone. Problem with float and new layout on same page

Help for using fonts Nupuram

Hi! I am trying to run the example Hans published on the 1st of December with a new upload. It is about using the variable font Nupuram. I downloaded the font in a big .zip file. It contains: two explaining files and folder with sub-folder "Nupuram", which in turn contains 6 subsub-filders: - otf with 32 otf font files - otf-variable with 1 file "Nupuram-VF.otf" - ttf with 32 ttf font files - ttf-variable with 1 file "Nupuram-VF.ttf" - ufo with 32 subfolders xxx.ufo - webfonts with 33 xxx.woff2 files After looking to contextgarden,I tried to put the "Nupuram" sub-folder or only the folders with .otf in different places of my context-lmtx folder, and using "mtxrun --script font --reload". But the example of Hans didn't work. Then I install the .ttf font files in Windows\fonts; it works, but 1) trying to install the Nupuram-VF.ttf, I have the message that Nupuram-Regular is already installed; and 2) I get the font in the example, but no changes of width or colour. So, now I deleted all the Nupuram everywhere. How could I have it fully working under context-lmtx? I have different places for fonts in my context-lmtx: - tex\texmf\fonts mainly empty except \data - texmf-context\fonts populated - texmf-fonts empty - texmf-modules\fonts populated Thanks for you help. xtables regression with LMTX 2022-12-21

With the latest (2022-12-21) LMTX I see a regression in xtables. The following code: \starttext \startxtable \startxrow \startxcell This is a line of text. \stopxcell \startxcell \contextversion \stopxcell \stopxrow \stopxtable \stoptext produces this with 2022-12-09: and this with 2022-12-21: The problem appears to be LMTX-specific. (I did not save 2022-12-15 for testing, but did not see the problem with that version.) -- Rik

LMTX: request for \tracinglostchars=3

Hi, since TeX Live 2021 (TeX 3.141592653), there is > - if \tracinglostchars >= 3, make missing characters an error (not just > a log message), and always report the character code in hex. LaTeX also enables this by default these days. LMTX only seems to support =0 (ignore) and =1 (report). Making these a fatal error (with exit status != 0) would be useful for automated typesetting, as missing characters easily can get lost in the logs, and then symbols are missing unnoticed in the output. Unconnected \mathboxanchored produces unexpected results

Hi Hans, MIkael and list, I got an unexpected result when I asked for a \mathboxanchored, but then did not use it with a connector. I expected the \mathboxanchored contents to be typeset as usual, without a connector. Instead I got “ ::: c3” added into the formula (“c3” was the anchor’s tag). MWE and unexpected output below. Accent wrecking \mathboxanchored

Hi Hans, Mikael and list, I’ve been testing the connectors, which work great with the latest upload. One problem I found: an accent in the \mathboxanchored causes a "Missing number, treated as zero” error and no output. MWE below. Thanks for all of the improvements. I’m making all kinds of connections! move glyph vertically

Dear list, I have the following sample: \startluacode fonts.handlers.otf.addfeature { name = "gpos_test", type = "single", data = { [ '¿' ] = 1000, [ '¡' ] = 1000, } } \stopluacode \definefontfeature[ktest][gpost_tes=yes] \starttext \startTEXpage[offset=1em] \feature[+][gpos_test] ¿? ¡! \stopTEXpage \stoptext This tries to move vertically the opening question and exclamation marks, so they are at the same height that its closing counterparts. I thought there may be a GPOS feature that could achieve this, but I must admit I have no idea about how to achive it. In my document, this should only work with the slanted feature. Use section custom value in a header text.

Dear Friends, I spent some time searching and coding simple documents, but failed and therefore I'm asking for help... A section such as chapter cn have custom keys with values. One uses the: \structureuservariable command to access such values. How can I use such a value to create a custom header in a format: Prefix: \structureuservariable{foo} I am asking for the only thing that worked when I tried was calling the: \setupheadertexts command inside a chapter environment block with some prefix. Unfortunately the value from the custom field was not expanded. It was correctly inserted in a regular paragraph. For example: \startchapter [title={A sample title}][custom_something={random_value}] ... \stopchapter How can I put the value of: custom_something in the header with some prefix? Hi, I uploaded a new version of lmtx. This version uses a new counter and dimension model deep down (\newinteger and \newdimension) which is more efficient in certain cases. From the user's perspective there is no difference between \newcount and \newdimen although there are some fundamental differences. I might have overlooked a few cases where it does make a difference in ConTeXt (easy to handle once I know). The test suite runs 5-10 % faster depending on the load of the machine and the gain mostly relates to memory access (where processes fight over memory and cpu cache). Of course I can probably gain more but using a faster machien than this 5 year old one but why waste a good machine. Some other possible speedups are on-hold till I have better test cases. Mathematical MetaFun Mania

Hello MetaFun Math Lovers, I am using MetaFun to attach diagrams to formulas. Both the physics and the typesetting are going great! I attached a sample below, to give a taste of what I am trying to do. This page of actual calculations has examples of almost everything I need. It’s a lot, but it is all working. Right now the interface is terrible, but effective. Thanks to Hans and Mikael for many helpful hints! I am still using \hpos and \setMPpositiongraphic, because I haven't figured out how to pass information from \mathboxanchored and \connectboxanchors to my MetaPost code. Command line arguments on context project

Dear list, I am using the project structure to typeset my thesis. This is how the directory looks like: chapters/chapter1.tex chapters/chapter2.tex … output/ env_thesis.tex prd_main.tex ref.bib I didn’t use the project. 1. How do I specify output directory? So for example when I run mtxrun —path=output --script context ../prd_main, I get this error: tex error on line 5 in file /usr/local/texlive/2022/texmf-dist/doc/latex/buctthesis/chapter1.tex: ! Undefined control sequence 2. How do I get CoTeXt to recognise the ref.bib file when I run the components not the product? For context, I don’t want the references printed at the end of each chapter but I would like the in-text citation to work (if that is possible). If not, is it possible compile the whole product but only output a certain page range? Jethro

bottlenecks

Hi, I'm (occasionally) trying to 'minimize' bottlenecks in the context / luametatex code. This is kind of hard because both are rather efficient already. On regular runs performance is probably okay but there are cases when one has a large complex document (e.g. with many tables) or has many runs (e.g. thousands of documents in one go). In that case even minor speedups can accumulate and become measurable (esp on vms and runs over a network). It can safe time and also energy (which can matter todays KWh pricing). So the challenge is how to determine bottlenecks. Are there users on this list that have document runs of more than 10 seconds (as reference: the luametatex manual takes < 9 seconds for 350 pages and loads plenty fonts and has many tables) or have many (small) runs and are annoyed by the runtime? And if so, what does one guess are the bottlenecks? Hans ps. Structure: multi-volume products

Hello, I have a book project that is being cut into two volumes (because it is too long and will be sold as a boxed set). Each volume is presently a separate *product* in the project structure. I presently set the counters in the second volume using: \setupheadnumber [part] [2] \setupheadnumber [chapter] [5] (I have multiple [5] parts in the project, and the first volume ends with part 2 and chapter 5.) 1) Is this the right way to be handling this? 2) Any suggestions on how I can put a Table of Contents for the first volume in the second volume? Unfortunately my definitions in the environment file or files are ignored... Here is the setup under the purposely created structure: ** The folder called: 'MainFolder' is the root of my document repository. ** The 'Metadata' folder inside the 'MainFolder' contains environment files. ** The 'SubFolder/SubSubFolder' inside the 'MainFolder' is the nestin glevel I need with all the documents. Containerized ConTeXt

Hi again, I've added the start of a podman container for invoking ConTeXt that may be of interest: https://github.com/DaveJarvis/keenwrite/tree/main/container The Containerfile sets up ConTeXt to work with my themes: https://github.com/DaveJarvis/keenwrite-themes The manage.sh shell script is a wrapper around the podman command to help build, save, and load the container, as well as connect and run commands. It's a work-in-progress. My goal is to simplify the setup and configuration of ConTeXt as well as make the instructions "cross platform" owing to containerization. >From there, I want to call out to the container from KeenWrite to typeset PDF documents using one of the themes. Further, I'd like to have KeenWrite download and install ConTeXt automatically using podman. I believe this will make it easier for people to generate high-quality PDFs from (R) Markdown documents because they'd only have to download KeenWrite, then ask KeenWrite to download/configure ConTeXt automatically, in a cross-platform fashion. Thoughts? Suggestions for improvement?

Seems to be a bug with \definelayout

I’ve rewritten my last email. The context below produces the pdf in the screenshot below. I expect the layout[short] to be applied to pages 2 and 3. It is. But there seem to be 2 bugs: 1 - Pages 4, 5 and 6 have the [short] layout. They should have the default layout. 2 - On pages 5 and 6, the text flows beyond the bottom of the frame. It should stop at the bottom of the frame. Why do I think these are bugs? If I change the page number in \definelayout[3][short] to \definelayout[4][short], then it behaves differently and as I expect: only pages 2 and 4 have the [short] layout and the text flows within the frames. two issues with variable fonts

Hi Hans, I have two issues with variable fonts (using current latest from yesterday): 1. \definelayout[pagenumber][layout] behaving strangely

The pdf from the tex below looks wrong to me, screenshot attached. It’s always like this when the page number in the second \definelayout is 1 more than the page number in the first. For other pairs of numbers, it behaves like I expect: the short layout is only on those 2 pages. I’m using the LMTX I updated a few days ago. Achieving different \cite styles

Hello everyone I am interested in being able to cite in different ways. By analogy, I refer to the \texcite{}, \parencite{} and other options available with biblatex in LaTeX. How do I achieve something like \textcite{} in ConTeXt? \hpos in math

Hello List, I am working on a project which combines graphics with formulas, like this: My code for creating this formula is attached. It works well, but I have a couple of questions that could make it work better. 1) Is there a mathematics version of \hpos? The contents of \hpos are set as text, even when \hpos is in mathematics, so I wrote an \mpos macro that uses \hpos but sets the contents as display-style math. This isn’t great for spacing, and it does't adapt to different math styles. \framed has a math version, \mframed, that sets the contents in the appropriate math style. If anyone know a way to accomplish that with \hpos, I’d love to know. 2) Is there a way to limit the scope of the \hpos labels to a single formula. This could turn into a book length project, with several formulas per page and several connections per formula. If every \hpos in the entire book needs a unique identifier, I could go mad. Under no circumstances will I connect one formula to another, so I’d like to be able to use something like \hpos{A}{…}…\hpos{B}{…} in each formula. Any suggestions? I’ve got to say, LMTX is an absolutely amazing tool for this project, which includes complicated networks of connections above and below many formulas. The integration of TeX, MetaPost, and Lua makes this project tremendous fun. Thanks! Gavin P.S. For the curious, I’m using a method for doing General Relativity based on spinors rather than tensors, following the methods of Penrose and Rindler in their 1985 books “Spinors and Space-time.” In the typesetting example above, the e_\alpha and e_{\dot\beta} are basis spinors (one left-handed, one right-handed). The e^\mu is the Infeld-van der Waerden symbol relating the spin basis to the coordinate basis. The connections are spinor index contractions. The formula above relates the components of the Infeld-van der Waerden symbol to the Pauli sigma matrices. This relationship only works in flat space, so this is an easy example! [Penrose and Rindler, vol 1 p. 125]

Convertnumber with \ref[number] fails in MkIV, works in LMTX

How to display the pages of a particular section in another PDF?

I can use this code to display page 5 from a PDF:\externalfigure[filename.pdf][page=5]I am making a teacher's guide for a workbook (workbook.pdf). I need to be able to display on the page all pages of a particular section. The teacher's guide uses the same section titles as the workbook, e.g.: 17-A: Title 17-B: Title In other words, there is 1:1 pairing of section titles in the teacher's guide and the workbook. Is there any way to tell ConTeXt to display all of the pages for a particular section? \externalfigure[filename.pdf][section=17A] --Joel

\externalfigure problem with displaying external images via https://live.contextgarden.net

Hello. A few years ago I created a PHP application for printing filled forms with PDF background. PHP application is generating ConTeXt source code, that is subsequently translated using the online application https://live.contextgarden.net. I have now discovered that the application is not functional because the https://live.contextgarden.net application is unable to retrieve the external PDF file from our organization's URL. Oddly, this source code at https://live.contextgarden.net does not generate a PDF file with the form in the background: \starttext \externalfigure[http://gyza.cz/iapp/opisvysv/498540_SS_16_predmetu_str1_PDF.pdf] % PDF FILE ON OUR ORGANIZATION (SCHOOL) HOSTING \stoptext This is despite the fact that the PDF file exists at the URL and the browser is able to display it. issue with OT feature in LMTX

accessing ital axis in variable font

Dear list, using the Literata variable fonts from https://github.com/googlefonts/literata/tree/main/fonts/variable, I have the following source: \definefontfeature[myaxis][axis={weight=500, italic=1}] \definefontfamily[mainface][rm][Literata][features={default, myaxis}] \setupbodyfont[mainface] \starttext \input zapf\par \it\input zapf \stoptext Other axes than weight (and only when not invoked as 'wght') don’t work for me (using latest from 2022.12.01 13:05). I have used the following source (it seems to be a goodie from current latest): \usemodule[fonts-variable] \starttext \showfontvariations[font=file:literata-italic.ttf] \showfontvariations[font=file:literata.ttf] \stoptext It reports that the Literata fonts have three (design) axes: wght, opsz and ital. ital is only a design axis. As explained before, they don’t work for me. How can I access to the italic and the optical size axes? Many thanks for your help, Pablo

Hi, I am used to giving very extensive feedbacks to my pupils. These are buffers with xtables flushing lua vectors. Here is their basic structures: * an environment that stores xtables. My understanding of the cld manuel is that context.tobuffer() and context.direct() should be used, but couldn't figure out how. Tried several times, also with context.step but all failed. Why are my captions overlapping next text in combinations?

I have some combinations used throughout my document like this: \starttext \startcombination[4*2] {% \framed[width=.25\textwidth, height=.25\textwidth]{}% }{% \strut word \\ \thinrule\hairline\hairline% }% \stopcombination \input knuth \stoptext This makes a box, then displays a word underneath, and then some blank lines. The problem I'm having is many times the caption text is covering up whatever appears after. In this minimal example, I tried showing the problem, but somehow this is rendering find, not covering the \input knuth text. Also, if I add more more items to the combination, the second row appears above the first row! My document is rather complex, so I couldn't find a way to simplify it enough to get a minimal example to reveal the problem that is appearing. Any ideas what might be causing the caption text to overlap and cover whatever appears after it? --Joel

Heisenbug in current?

Hi all, I'm very hesitant to report this because I can't reproduce it consistently: some of my files don't compile with bizarre font errors, sometimes. At first I thought it may be a hardware problem on my laptop, but I've seen more or less the same error on 3 different computers now, intermittently. Has anybody else seen this? Do the developers have any idea what this could be? Has there been a change in the code concerning this field? Personally, I think that enabling hz expansion by default is probably a good thing, but this change will affect a very large number of documents and you never mentioned it in the announcement email, so I suspect that it was accidentally added when you added the math hz. How to break margin notes across page breaks?

How can I allow margin text to break across the page breaks? I have a document with many \inmargin code. The problem I'm finding is that sometimes I have a lot of items in the margin. I hope this margin details can break across the page and continue onto the next page. The problem is instead it just runs off the print boundaries of the page. How to make a block of text narrower?

I need to make a section of text in my document narrower, about .6666\textwidth. Basically the text has normal alignment and everything, just instead of filling \textwidth, its compressed so there is a larger white space to the right. I've tried dozens of things, but cannot get a good solution, every solution has strange other effects. The best thing that has worked so far is \setuplayout[width=3in] But the problem with this solution is then I cannot get it to return to the original settings afterward. --Joel

LMTX: reimplementing texquotes as OTF feature

Hi, as Hans recommended in the last video meeting, I tried to implement the texquotes feature using OTF features, and hit two problems: 1) To support German quotes as well, I have two ligatures that end up as the same glyph: `` -> “ "' -> “ This can't be in the same ligature feature, as it will overwrite the table entry with a duplicate key. After some fiddling, I decided to map "' to a Unicode PUA symbol and then add a second feature that maps this symbol to “ using the substitute feature. This works for TeX Gyre Schola. Hello All, I have published the new VSCode Extension for ConTeXt, that I presented during the 2022 ConTeXt meeting - https://wiki.contextgarden.net/VSCode You can install it manually in the VSCode (using the "Install from VSIX..." option). Work with Taco to add MetaPost Language Server (this could be challenging and interesting) Do give this a try and give your feedback. problem with Segoe Ui Symbol as fallback font

I’d like to set Segoe UI Symbol as fallback for all missing glyphs. But it doesn’t work, I get an error like registered function call [1145]: ...-14/tex/texmf-context/tex/context/base/mkxl/math-act.lmt:2339: attempt to perform arithmetic on a nil value (field 'depth') stack ... even if there’s no fallback enabled for the math font. \definefontfallback[segoeFB] [name:segoeuisymbol] [0x00300-0x003FF,0x02100-0x02800] [check=yes,force=no] That used to work, at least until version 2022-09-18. It’s completely irregular which ranges throw an error: 0x03000-0x20000 runs 0x02000-0x03000 doesn’t 0x02200-0x027FF doesn’t And the fallbacks also don’t work, even if there’s no error. It seems to depend on the font – I get errors with Segoe UI Symbol, but not with EmojiOneColor or Symbola. I checked with font versions 5.0 and 5.01, don’t have newer ones. Does it work with current versions? Also, a list of fallbacks doesn’t work (I’d like to replace single characters from different fonts); is it supposed to? test file attached. Hraban

Dear list, using current latest (2022.10.22 11:23), I have the following sample: \starttext \doifelse{\jobname}{a} {yes}{no} \jobname \startluacode if tex.jobname == "a" then context("yes") else context("no") end \stopluacode \stoptext I get "no" as in TeX and "yes" with Lua, being "a.tex" the source file. OpenBSD binaries

Hi, I have two question regarding OBSD binaries: 1) the building farm holds two binaries: current -stable version (or -release?) and the previous version. Since upgrading OBSD with sysupgrade is very easy, but AFAIU works only to upgrade from version (n-1) to n where n is current relase number, I wonder if it wouldn't easier to maintain binaries only for the current version: keeping the OS up to date is strongly recommended. https://www.openbsd.org/faq/faq5.html#Flavors This might ease OBSD binaries management. What do other OBSD users think about it? 2) AFAIU, sources are now available for downloading. I understand it would be possible to make a package build for my system, so that I can upgrade OBSD without having to wait for the next binaries upload. * binaries are quite small, so they should compile quite quickly. context --autopdf and --showdirectives

I’d like to configure the default behaviour of "context --autopdf"; since on my Mac I must always write "--autopdf=auto", otherwise context tries to call wine "sumatrapdf.exe" -reuse-instance -bg-color 0xCCCCCC instead of e.g. "open". There’s a hint about "directives_pdfview_method", so I wanted to find out more about directives: "context --showdirectives" looks promising; it tells me "result saved in file: .../texmf-context/tex/context/base/mkiv/mtx-context-setters.pdf", but that file isn’t there; it is actually in the current directory, but broken. * How can I configure the command for --autopdf ? (Something in texmfcnf.lua?) * Can we add additional options ("pdfview methods: auto default okular pdfxcview sumatra"), e.g. open (should be default on Mac), xdg-open (could be default on Linux)... * What’s wrong with --showdirectives? Suboptimal German hyphenation

Hi, I was typesetting some German text on a narrow page when I discovered the justification wasn't as good as expected. I think I tracked this down to differences in hyphenation points, namely, ConTeXt has fewer: \starttext \language[de] \showhyphens{Zusammenhang} \showhyphens{anderswo} \showhyphens{anderswoher} \stoptext This shows languages > hyphenation > show: Zusam[-||]men[-||]hang languages > hyphenation > show: anderswo languages > hyphenation > show: anders[-||]wo[-||]her Now with LaTeX and Babel: \documentclass{article} \usepackage[ngerman]{babel} \begin{document} \showhyphens{Zusammenhang} \showhyphens{anderswo} \showhyphens{anderswoher} \end{document} This shows [] \TU/lmr/m/n/10 Zu-sam-men-hang [] \TU/lmr/m/n/10 an-ders-wo [] \TU/lmr/m/n/10 an-ders-wo-her The LaTeX hyphenation points agree with the German Duden dictionary. As none of the words use more than 7-bit ASCII, I think newer pattern changes are not related. Curiously, the same effect already appears with MKII and MKIV from TeXLive 2014, the oldest I had around. I'm also surprised 'anders-wo-her' gets hyphenated but 'anderswo' is not hyphenated at all. I could not reproduce a difference with English words so far. Any ideas? As far as I understand, MKIV/LMTX should use the de-hyph-1996 patterns which LuaLaTeX uses these days too, via hyph-utf8.
