I get the following error with current beta (did not happen few betas ago): ! TT font disregards margins

I need to intersperse my text with code typed by someone else and am attempting to give the appearance of the code having been typed on a typewriter. The problem I am encountering is that the Teletyped text does not respect margin settings. What could be done to correct this? (I am running MKII on a Windows system). In-text itemizations break spacing

Hi ConTeXtans, \startitemize[text] is a very cool command, but i run frequently into “Overfull \hbox” errors. It would be nice if some context magicians would change the ~1em-wide space in front of the “•” or “(1.)” to scale and compensate the majority of line width issues. (you can easily chop off or add loads of space to a 1em-space without making it ugly) i hope you dig my idea, Philipp PS: if somebody doesn’t know how \startitemize[text] looks like; about like this: „Formen sind • Überspringen von Exons, • Benutzung alternativer 3’- und 5’-Splice-Stellen, • und alle Kombinationen aus oben genanntem.“ (You’ll need a proportional Font to see this and gmail and the mailing list need to conserve the em quad…)

counter values as label names

Dear list, this seems a really basic question (and probably not even strictly ConTeXt-focused) - so please accept my apologies… I'm trying to construct a macro which first creates two labels in the text (\start/stopline and \pagereference) with the value of a counter as the label name and then a footnote which prints the page and line numbers of those two. Supposedly because of my limited understanding of TeX's expansion mechanism I haven't been able to get things working with this code: \setuplinenumbering[% location=inner, step=5, method=page, style=\tfxx, align=left, distance=1.5cm, width=0.3cm] \setupfootnotes[ location=text, numberconversion=empty, paragraph=yes, ] \definenumber[entrycounter] \setnumber[entrycounter]{0} \def\appentry#1#2{% \startline[line:\getnumber[entrycounter]]% \pagereference[page:\getnumber[entrycounter]]% #1% \stopline[line:\getnumber[entrycounter]]% \footnote{{\bf \at[page:\getnumber[entrycounter]]}% \inline[line:\getnumber[entrycounter]] #1] #2}% \incrementnumber[entrycounter]% } By now I tried to adapt a LaTeX-only-solution which Uwe Lueck suggested on the texhax-mailinglist some years ago (cf. http://tug.org/pipermail/texhax/2006-July/006599.html) but failed quite miserably. I also tried the same with plain TeX registers (\newcount\entrycounter \entrycounter=0 etc.) instead of ConTeXt counters. Could it be easier to stuff the \pagereference and \startline-commands into before= and after= of setupfootnotes? Could anyone please give me a hint on this? The purpose of this: I'm trying to use mkIV's page and linenumbering facilities for a critical apparatus (in this case endnotes with page and line references). As I didn't succeed with Hans Hagen's recent suggestion (cf. http://www.mail-archive.com/ntg-context@ntg.nl/msg49695.html) I tried this quick and dirty way. Although it's far away from being perfect (in an ideal world the endnotes should be grouped into one paragraph per page and of course there would be more then one apparatus and so on) this seems to be a first approach to me… Cheers, Daniel

export and pagebreak

Hi all, first I wish a very happy new year to everybody! I think, this will be my last post for this year, but as i have tasted blood, the next year I will post a lot of further questions I think :-) Now I have Christmas holidays and can play the whole day with ConTeXt. I tested a little the export function. There is one thing I have on my wishlist: is it possible to get a <pagebreak/> into the exported XML? The background is that I have often the requirement to include pagebreak-info in online-productions (for citation reasons) and that could be a very good starting point. In fact, in the moment at the position where a pagebreak occurs, the space (if it occurs at a space) is eaten up. Minimal example: \setupbackend [export=yes] \starttext \startchapter [title=Tufte Example] \startparagraph \dorecurse{10}{\input tufte} \stopparagraph \stopchapter \stoptext At the break of pg 2 to pg 3 you will find lump,skip (without the space) in the exported file. Hello, I am using the default implementation of TeXLive 2010 which provides MetaPost 1.211 on Windows 7. I'm getting a fatal error on texnum.mp on the simplest possible use of graph. Here is the simplest possible test case that shows the error: input graph end Here is the error message I get. How to use boxit MetaPost macros with ConTeXt minimals?

I've installed the ConTeXt minimals (Mark IV!) recently, and running the command: context --version yields the following output: ... MTXrun | current version: 2010.07.30 11:35 Now I want to generate a few plots using the graph-module (by John D. Hobby) of MetaPost, which I used in the past to make high-quality plots. But when I add the following statement: input graph ; to the preamble of my MetaPost file and run the command: mpost plot.mp The run aborts with the following messages: >> texnum.mp >> texnum.mpx ! Unable to make mpx file. l.17 init_numbers(btex $-$etex, btex$1$etex, btex${\times}10$etex, Transcript written on texnum.log. TeXExec | processing graphic 'texnum.mpx' TeXExec | runtime: 1.547143 >> texnum.mp >> texnum.mpx ! Selecting pdf version

Dear all, I am looking for a way to choose the pdf version generated by ConTeXt. On my system, ConTeXt produces pdf 1.5 files, but my printshop doesn't like them and asks for pdf 1.4 files. Escaping in LuaTeX

I have a problem with Lua and the "#" operator. If I execute the following code I receive an error. \def\luacode% {\startluacode local t = {1, 2, 3} tex.print(#t) \stopluacode} \starttext \luacode \stoptext ConTeXt give me the message: ! Illegal parameter number in definition of \luacode. <to be read again> t l.4 tex.print(#t ) And if I execute the "H" command I get: You meant to type ## instead of #, right? Or maybe a } was forgotten somewhere earlier, and things are all screwed up? I''m going to assume that you meant ##. I've tryed with ##t, whit \#t, with \string#t, with \ctxlua instread of \startluacode and \stopluacode, and I've obtained some other errors, but ConTeXt always give me an error. Maybe should I escape in another manner the "#" operator?

line numbers - method=page

Dear all, on trying to reproduce the TEI to ConTeXt example on http://wiki.contextgarden.net/TEI_xml I haven't been able to get the line numbering per page working right. I directly copy-pasted the relevant part of the seventh listing which goes like this: \setuplinenumbering[location=inner, step=5, method=page, style=\tfxx, align=left, distance=0.3em, width=0.3cm] - unfortunately to no avail. method=page isn't mentioned neither in the context manual nor in the wiki so I fear I'll have to find some workaround? Being a absolute newbie to ConTeXt I actually tried some primitive fiddling with variations of \setupheadertexts[\setcounter{linenumber}{0}] I'm using ConTeXt ver: 2010.07.30 11:35 MKIV fmt: 2010.12.31 which should be the newest version available on http://tlcontrib.metatex.org/2010. Any kind of help is highly appreciated! Please forgive me if there has been already mentioned a solution on this list which I missed… Thanks in advance! Daniel

framed float with offset

Is there a way to have figures placed on a slightly larger colored background and then have paragraph text flow around the enlarged area? I tried the following (using ver 2009.11.26 16:28 MKII): \setupcolors[state=start] \starttext \placefigure[right,none]{}% {\externalfigure[sample/cow.pdf]% [scale=500, frame=on, frameoffset=20pt, framecolor=black, background=color, backgroundcolor=lightgray, backgroundoffset=20pt]} \input knuth \stoptext But the frame and background bleed into the text. I tried wrapping the externalfigure in a \framed, and also wrapping that in an \vbox or an \hbox (desperate measures, I admit). But somehow the \placefigure always knew exactly the size of the cow itself and used only that information, rather than the size of the enlarged background. Any suggestions appreciated. (I'd wikify in the framed section.) -Sanjoy

Identifying fonts on my system

My first step in trying to understand fonts is to determine exactly which fonts are loaded onto my system. Is there a command that will list all the fonts currently resident on my TexLive 2008 MKII installatation? Mfonts.pdf mentions that Adobe's 15 standard fonts are also available. Hello to all of you. I'm working on a document that must have a layout for the first page and a different layout for all the other pages. On this mailing list Hans Hagen said that the technique to set up a layout for the first page of a document is \setuplayout[1][key=value, ... ] I tried that code in this way: \definelayout[1][% layout for the first page backspace=6cm, cutspace=6cm, width=middle] \definelayout[% global layout for all the other other pages backspace=1cm, cutspace=1cm, width=middle] \setuplayout \starttext \showframe \dorecurse{20}{\input dawkins \par \input knuth \par} \stoptext this code doesn't work. Arrows in symbol font

Hi all, I tried to insert an right arrow in my text via \definefontsynonym[Symbol][symbol.ttf] \definesymbol[test_ae][\getglyph{Symbol}{\char"AE}] \starttext Test ae: \symbol[test_ae]\par \stoptext where AE was the codepoint Windows Char Table gave me. But in the pdf there was a Diamond-Sign, which should reside at codepoint A8. So I tested a litte more and finally found the arrow at \definesymbol[rarr][\getglyph{Symbol}{\char"C6}] On the arrow-side i am happy now, but confused how that happens. I did some analysis of the font, it includes 2 cmaps, one type 0 cmap which declares (converted to xml for analysis): <map code="0xae" name="arrowright"/> and a type 4 cmap which has <map code="0xf0ae" name="arrowright"/> So I would expect one of this codes to be working (in fact, both codepoints work eg in Word). But \char"AE gives the diamond and \char"F0AE gives nothing at all. Can anyone give me some enlightment? Thanks, Achim

Using Winedt: a. go to options, execution modes b. in full executeables...enter full path where you installed minimals c. Now in TeX\MikTeX\Options...Add a search root to minimals d. using font from a specified location

Dear list, I have a bunch of fonts at some location (../myfonts/) relative to TeX files (for example ../myfonts/myfontA.otf). What is the best way to access them in MKIV? The best option might be to specify something equivalent to "export TEXINPUTS=../myfonts", but I don't know what exactly I have to use. (A command like \addtotexinputs or \addtosearchpath[../myfonts].) Alternatively \definefontsynonym[a][file:../myfonts/myfontA.otf] would also be acceptable, though I find it a bit ugly. I'm trying to achieve parallel footnotes in arab/english texts, ie. each footnote in the Arabic text has a corresponding footnote in the English text. Both should point to the same footnote text. Augmented Matrix

I'm trying to make a simple Augmented matrix using \startmathmatrix and cannot seem to get \VL working correctly. I'd assume to do an augmented matrix I'd do: \startformula \left[ \startmathmatrix[n=4] 1 \NC 1 \NC 1 \VL 1\NR 0 \NC 1 \NC -1 \VL 2\NR 0 \NC 0 \NC 2 \VL 8 \stopmathmatrix \right] \stopformula but I get an undefined control sequence. Table resolution too low

I just created a PDF of a bookblock by using MKII to produce the .ps file and Adobe Acrobat to create the PDF from it. When preflighting the PDF, all the photos were found to be 300dpi or greater but the table created by the following code was flagged at being only 150ppi. I find it easy enough to read data about different fonts when using fontA = fontloader.open('a.otf') and then glyphs = fontloader.to_table(fontA).glyphs but I'm not able to figure out how to aks the same question about the font that is currently being used (in MKIV). Dumb quotes and dashes, globally and in verbatim text

so i want to use ' and -- in my code, which is embedded via \starttyping \stoptyping, but that’s impossible. context replaces -- with – and ' with ’. that’s wrong. i need to be able to tell context it shouldn’t do any “smart” stuff, since i’m smart enough to press the ’-key if i want the character ’. so what i ask for: 1. we should change the standard behavior of context to “don’t replace --, ' and whatnot in verbatim areas” 2. we should be able to trigger this globally, for people who have a useful keyboard layout and can type “special” characters as fast as ascii. is the latter already built in somehow?

Interesting package for XeTeX

Hi all, on ctt, I just saw an annoucement for a xe(la)tex package which I found quite interesting. Here's the description: Location on CTAN: /macros/xetex/latex/ucharclasses This package addresses one of the few features where TeX still has to play catch-up to word processing programs: automatic font switching for different languages. In fact, it goes one better than word processing programs and comes with macros for inserting arbitrary code between text from different unicode blocks, by making use of XeTeX's little known "intercharclass" behaviour. I was wondering: is something similar possible in mkiv yet? I know that with the font fallback mechanism, it's trivial to change fonts for unicode ranges, but is it possible to change hyphenation patterns (or even insert "arbitrary code") according to unicode blocks? Hello, I'd like to \define or \setuphead or \setupparagraph (or \setup<what?>) a command which would produce the similar thing as the native LaTeX \paragraph{name} does. This command should "sublevel" the \subsubsection (so it would generate numbers when being used), it would have an extra space after it and it would not produce the line-break. An example of its use is in the attached .gif (screenshot of a document created by LaTeX); I'm trying to generate the "*4.2.3.1 Stavební jámy* Hladina ..." Hi all, i guess this is easy, but I can't find an example to help me: I want to write a macro that will collect one of its arguments in a buffer and then collect the other argument in a buffer. Hi at all, now I've run into the next problem: Trying to set text in 2 columns. Even in the simples case: \showframe \starttext \startcolumns \dorecurse{20}{\input knuth} \stopcolumns \stoptext The text goes ca 1 line into the footer-region. I played around with various settings (blank, align=yes, setupwhitespace etc), but can not figure out how to keep the text in the main area only. Another related question: for which purpose is the columns setting in setuplayout? It doesnt seem to affect the output? And still another question: how can i fine-control the amount of whitespace, especially the strechability and shrinkability? is \setupwhitespace[2pt plus 2pt minus 2pt] the right way? And how is the equivalent syntax for \blank? Thanks, Achim

hi, do you really support this obsolete statement? if so: why? - html mail is supported by every mail reader nowadays, and nowhere near broken - semantic html is way better for blind people than plain text, since it is, well, semantically structured. something enclosed in em-tags will e.g. pronounced in a accentuated voice by the screen reader. - e mail sizes are no problem with today's hd capacity - every proper mail reader does block pics from foreign sources for privacy reasons essentially: this was true, and isn't anymore. if you think http://www.xkcd.com/386 , you are right, i'm like that :) cu in the context forum, philipp

problem with setupwhitespace

Hello, I am trying to setup a layout for a book. Its very simple, consisting only of paragraphs. Regularly, there should be no space between them, but to force the pages getting filled there may be a small space. I cannot figure out how to set it up. In the mailing list I found the sample \setupwhitespace[3pt plus 2pt minus 1pt] but in fact, that seems to have no effect, the page ist not filled. The Reference-Manual doesnt mention this form, but states that there is some stretchability. How can I define the stretchability? Hello, I encountered a strange effect. Let's have a code that generates the same math, firstly by Ctx and secondly by Lua: --- \starttext \startformula M_{t,WnT} = 1000 \stopformula \startluacode context.startformula() context("M_{t,WnT} = 1000") context.stopformula() \stopluacode \stoptext --- You can see the result - the space between "W" and "n" in lower index is smaller when generated (natively) by Ctx than that in math generated by Lua. (The latter case may affect a bit "disturbingly" to the reader.) It seems also that space between (subscript) "T" and "=" varies. So why these differences? Hi, I have mentioned it at the last context conference: I am looking for a person (or a group) to take over the server contextgarden.net. Not only the wiki or the modules section or ..., but the complete server. I have started everything more then seven years ago and we (= you) have all made it possible that contextgarden.net is now used by more then 500 unique visitors each day (the wiki alone). The average time a user spends on the wiki is three and a half minute (according to the stats, but this is inaccurate, of course), I think that is pretty good! But as usual in a setting like this, I have shifted my focus. This does not mean I like ConTeXt less then several years ago! By no means! But I am too busy with my new job and my family so there is pretty much no server maintenance (except for a reboot once in a while). I really hope that someone steps in and I can hand over all the files/databases and the domain name before the next conference. Not that some parts are already maintained by other people: most prominently the minimals are done by Mojca with help of Arthur (I hope I've got it right). Patrick

Marginal line numbers

All, Thanks to Thomas's help, I've been making my way up the learning curve. My TEI xml has empty lb elements indicating lines in the original and corresponding lb elements in the translation. I'd like to be able to set these numbers in the margin so that readers may coordinate the lineation. 4000 pages limit?

Hello there. Yesterday I was trying to typeset a very, very long document (about 3000 pages in A4). Well, mkiv died with a PANIC: unprotected error in call to Lua API (stack overflow (out of stack space)) It's easily reproducible with a simple \starttext \dorecurse{50000}{ \input knuth } Once it reaches page 4000 it will die. I'm obviously going to split the document, because a pdf of 4000 pages is just insane, but now I'm curious if this is a known limit. Bests -- Marco

Three column nomenclature settings?

Nomenclature can be considered as a type of synonyms. Therefore, I can define a nomenclature as : \definesynonyms[nomenclature][nomenclatures][\infull] \setupsynonyms[nomenclature] [criterium=all,location=serried] here I use location=serried, becasue I found the synonym is not in the same line ( higher than) the meaning. But I want a three-column nomenclature list. The first column is the synonym, the second is the meaning, the third is the si-unit of it, if the synonym has an unit. Which way to type greek letters in synonym list?

Dear All, I am setting up the synonym list. I defined it as "nomenclature" \definesynonyms[nomenclature][nomenclatures][\infull] \setupsynonyms[nomenclature] [criterium=all,location=serried] when i type in someting like \nomenclature{A} {Area} it works. But if I type \nomenclature{$\alpha$}{Angle of something} it fails. The reason may be only text could be used. I found the list is sorted alphabetically. Then if I type a greek letter, the compiler does not konw how to sort it.

Is there a way to split TABLE and TABLE caption for longtables

Group, Hans. Wolfgang, Help PLEASE I have numerous loooooong tables to publish. attached find minimal example. I need these tables to mimic \longtables LaTeX package. I got a recode from Wolfgang using the TABLE module which works well for the header, footer and TABLEbody however: I need table caption and tablefoot to state: table xxxxxx (continue) Also it would be perfect if the top of the continued page(s) were open and the footer for the continued page(s) said: table xxxxxxx (continued) Is there a way to accomplishe this feat of magic within ConTeXt? I have tried all I can think of to no avail. I have been on this problem now for 3 weeks. If no solution then I am afraid that I must resort back to LaTeX and memoir class. I am truely hoping NOT to go back. barney

All, More naive questions about xml and context. I'm finding this slow going and documentation opaque or just thin on the ground. I have XML markup like this: <ref target="#N003-06"> reference term</ref> where the reference text is in <div xml:id="notes"> <note xml:id="N003-06">reference text</note . . . etc. </div> I need to set this as an endnote reference. Can anyone give me a hint as to how a context environment file should look to achieve this? Thomas's excellent tutorial at http://wiki.contextgarden.net/TEI_xml is a great help, but my grasp of the underlying protocols is fragile. More practical examples of TEI (or other xml texts)-> ConTeXt -> PDF would sure come in handy. thanks, jon

Installation context minimals

Hello, Can someone please tell me if the instructions for installation/updating of minimals given on http://wiki.contextgarden.net/ConTeXt_Minimals#Unix-like_platforms_.28Linux… are still valid. I went to my /Applications/ContextMinimals folder (on Mac OSX) and typed: sh first-setup.sh --extras=all Then I entered, mtxrun --selfupdate However, I got the following: MTXrun | resolvers: to be replaced old script /Applications/ConTeXtMinimalsStable/tex/texmf-osx-intel/bin/mtxrun MTXrun | resolvers: using suffix based filetype 'lua' MTXrun | resolvers: unable to locate new script Seems like there was a problem here. Anyway, I went ahead and did luatools --selfupdate and I got: MTXrun | unknown script 'base.lua' or 'mtx-base.lua' and, then I did context --make which gave me, MTXrun | unknown script 'context.lua' or 'mtx-context.lua' Can someone please explain the recipe for installation. What I should do? Also, I have read long back in the forum that some people have two installations at the same time and you can switch between these. How is this done? Is there any information about this on the Wiki. Thanks.

Hi, currently, in my document, an article reference looks like this: [1] Thor, A. U. (2010). ConTeXt is great. My Own Publishing, 2(4), 23-34. with the title in italics. How to make the year appear at the end and how to make the publisher in italics, too? I would like such changes to apply to other types of references as well (books, inproceedings, etc...) Second, \cite[Thor:2010,Bar:2009] produces something like [6 and 9]. How do I get rid of 'and' and get simply [6,9]? Own environment creating

Hello experts, I'll find somewhere perfect example of how to define and set parameters of my own environment. I want to create my own environment derived from framedtext environment. I want to use my own settings such as: \defineframedtext[MyFramedCols][MYTITLE=My title, MYNUMCOLS=3, ..., width = .... (ie the rest is inherited from the parent environment) ] Is such a thing possible? It is within the power of an ordinary user to do something similar (as for example using namespaces)? How to avoid that \writetolist becomes a page-breaker

Probably due to my abuse of \writetolist, I noticed that inserting \writetolist right after \subject makes TeX to think that it can break the page there without problems. See the following minimal example: %===============cut here============= \definelist[myrandompart] \starttext \dorecurse{12}{ \input reich } \subject{\bf Wrong!} \writetolist[myrandompart]{It's a test} \input knuth \page \dorecurse{12}{ \input reich } \subject{\bf Correct!} %\writetolist[myrandompart]{It's a test} \input knuth %===============cut here============= I'm pretty sure the solution is out there. bold small caps

Hello, Is there a font in the minimals with bold small caps? I've tried lm and some tex-gyre fonts, but no success so far... Test file: \setupbodyfont[???] \starttext {\sc\bf Test} or {\bf\sc Test} should give bold small caps... \stoptext http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Pseudo_Small_Caps seems to apply only to mkii. hi! i want to achieve the effect i see when using the following code, only in a semantically correct way (and without defining a \MyHeader macro like in some examples) \setuphead[section][numbercommand=\headtext{section}~] \setupheadtext[de][section=Aufgabe] \def\task{\section{}} so if my document looks like \starttext \task \task \stoptext this should render to: Aufgabe 1 Aufgabe 2 (i hope the mailing list delivers html mail) And maybe somebody knows a cool way to do this: \starttext \task \task[Graphs] \stoptext ↓↓↓↓ Aufgabe 1 Aufgabe 2: Graphs thank you!

Minimal ConTeXt and texfont!

Hi, I've removed my old TeXLive installation from my Linux box, an decided to start using ConTeXt only! So, I installed the ConTeXt minimals (from contextgarden) and everything seems to work just fine, but.. I want to try to install some new fonts and it is common practice to use texfont for that. ConTeXt comes with its own texfont, but when I type texfont at my linux-prompt, no texfont can be found? Do I need to install additional tools to be able to build new fonts? Any suggestions?
