\xmlatt{}{} has a counterpart \xmlattribute{}{LPATH}{} where one can start the search for the attribute at LPATH. for \xmlchainatt{}{} I am missing such a counterpart \xmlchainattribute{}{LPATH}{} where one can do the same. The problem now is that \xmlchainatt{#1}{att} always finds attribute att when it is defined on the node itself. But consider the case where att="true" exists with the intention to trigger a search higher up in the call chain for that same attribute att. Of course \xmlattribute{#1}{..}{att} is not exactly the same as \xmlchainattribute{#1}{..}{att} would be . yours sincerely dr. Hans van der Meer

Non-standard font alternatives

Hi list, I'm looking to import a font with medium and light weights (in this case Roboto) and define font alternatives so one can quickly switch to light text just as one would switch to bold text. There is a stackexchange answer from Wolfgang (https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/303648/context-font-weights) which details a solution to this problem for ConTeXt MkIV but despite my best efforts I haven't been able to get things to work for me. There is the Roboto typescript example on ConTeXt garden but it isn't exactly what I'm looking for as for the document I'm making I would prefer to be able to treat the font weights as alternatives rather than separate families since I will be switching often. Dear Everyone, Following my attempts to create and learn Context's ways to manage fonts, I would like to ask about the following: I've created the structure for fonts in texmf-local folder and after running scripts they are listed. The output for Roboto Flex is as follows: identifier familyname fontname filename subfont instances robotoflex robotoflex robotoflexregular robotoflex.ttf thin extralight light regular medium semibold bold extrabold black extrablack thinitalic extralightitalic lightitalic italic mediumitalic semibolditalic bolditalic extrabolditalic blackitalic extrablackitalic What is the proper way to use family name or font name to create a typescript file and a goodies file to take advantage of optical sizes. Google's Roboto Flex is an upgraded Roboto as a variable font. I know that this topic has been discussed many times and I've read the fonts manual but still have these questions. Most of the examples are rather ready solutions or templates but not always cover ways how to figure out values from scratch and how they correspond. Thanks for help, Pawel

I would like to change an entity 'on the fly'. Example \def\DATE{THEDATE}\expanded{\xmlsetentity{DATE}{\DATE}} \startxmlsetups typ:event \def\DATE{NEWDATE}\expanded{\xmlsetentity{DATE}{\DATE}} Using &DATE; within the <event>. \stopxmlsetups However, using &DATE; inside an <event> always results in THEDATE and never in NEWDATE. Table of contents in the middle of a document

Hi, I was trying to have my "Acknowledgements" section/chapter before the table of contents but be contained within it. Hi, as most of you know, I’m the editor of context journal, the annual magazine for all members of context group, AKA “proceedings of the [previous] ConTeXt meeting”. While I have some experience as an editor in German, my English is far from perfect, so I need to rely on a native speaker for proofreading. In the least years, Clyde was filling that role very diligently, but he just moved and can’t make the time again. Deadline for the current issue is only in August, but we’re already at ~100 pages with the articles I got (by Willi, Willi, Willi, Taco, Taco, Götz, and me) and I’d like to spread the work a bit. * Would you like to help with that? * – You don’t need to understand the code. – I want the text to be correct and understandable, we don’t need to reach literary quality. – You can work in PDF or in the sources, as you like. – More than one person is welcome. BTW I never thought of offering “our” articles to TUG and NTG, while I sometimes got articles that were published in TUGboat or MAPS first. (And I’m writing/translating for DANTE’s DTK regularly.) I’ll start to do that, since “recycling” makes sense, and it also can’t hurt to spread the word. This is also a reminder to hand in your talks from Dreifelden – or new articles! Hraban

Nuclear reactions

Hi list, I’m writing nuclear reactions. When add prescripts to atomic symbols with two letters, (Be, Sr, Xe, etc.) the prescripts split the atoms! (See output below.) \starttext Text: \lohi[left]{4}{10}Be. Reaction: \startformula {\rm U}^^{235}__{92} + n \rightarrow {\rm Sr}^^{94}__{38} + {\rm Xe}^^{140}__{54} + 2n \stopformula \stoptext I looked at \chemical and \molecule, but could not find a way to make isotopes with those. Software upgrade for ntg and contextgarden server 6 April

This means that various services will probably be offline for a while during the afternoon (CET timezone). Affected will be the NTG website, all the @ntg.nl mailing lists, the ConTeXt wiki, and some other subsites of contextgarden.net. We expect to the outage to last a few hours at most. I do not have an exhaustive list of potentially affected services and lists, so this message is sent out to the two largest mailing lists on the server. Using project-local fonts

Hi, I'm writing a small report using EB Garamond as the main font. I am sometimes using Overleaf (which has a ConTeXt distribution that is accessible using a latexmkrc file). The problem is, the EB Garamond version that is included seems to have a bug: the c-t and s-t ligatures (and maybe others) are triggered when enabling `dlig` even though they are supposed to be in the `hlig` feature. I also would like to include the Hack font that isn't in the distribution. So, I'm looking for a way to embed the fonts into the project in a portable way instead of installing them in a system directory. Is there any way to do so ? Hi Everyone, Adobe's Garamond Premier Pro is one of the most popular fonts. However, it seems that there are always questions on how to properly use its features, such as optical sizes. I've found this Stackoverflow thread tha tprovides code and instructions: https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/466645/context-how-to-use-font-opti… Context wiki does contain a page about using fonts, with instructions for optical sizes and other features too. Extra or less frequently used features are mentioned too. Do you know of any repository or would you be willing to share setup definition files for typescripts and goodies? Feynman Diagrams

Hi List, I’m looking for a way to include Feynman diagrams in my ConTeXt documents. I’ve used feynMF/feynMP and TikZ-feynman with LaTeX in the past, but it doesn’t look like either works directly with ConTeXt. My diagrams are pretty basic (example below). Does anyone have a ConTeXt solution they like? If not, I’ll add it to my list of summer MetaPost projects. Thanks! Gavin

I'm just following some of the standalone installation instructions as per the wiki alongside a TeX Live installation, but there are a few things that don't add up or I can't seem to add them up :). first, while I was trying to mtxrun --generate it returned /usr/bin/env texlua no such file or directory So I thought heck, perhaps by creating a symbolic link we'll call it a day, but that wasn't enough, nope. This is is circa 21st century ladies and gentlemen! so I thought, alright, since there seems ot be a a problem with texlua, let's also add it to path somehow. But remember that earlier, adding bin to path was necessary to avoid /usr/bin/env texlua no such file or directory message But even now while trying to find plain.tex I've come to the conclusion that it needs it or else fails altogether The problem is that I don't have plain.tex though. As a matter of fact the TeX Live installation I currently have, plain tex is nowhere to be seen, heck, not even latex but only a handful set of fmtutil fmtuitl-sys mktexfmt and updmap updmap-sys and the whole remainder of kpathsea but then again this in practice would not even be needed if at all. In other words, only the TeX Live infrastructure needed which shouldn't be a problem, right? But itis: a problem that is. Besides. The reason I mentioned it is only to serve reference material , but that's it. to recap, mtxrun looks for a texmfcnf.lua (which I don't have) and also for a plain.tex which I don't have either, and also presumably for a contextcnf.lua (which I have) but the script concept is not so smart, and finishes off with a final note that says warning: no lua configuration files found. No shit Sherlock! Of course it can't find it, because it doesn't exist, resolvers | resolving | looking for fallback 'contextcnf.lua' on given path '/home/ce/texmf/web2c' from specification 'home:texmf/web2c' But at this point and without sugar coating it, the standalone installation of context proves to be a chore more problematic than waiting to install over 5gb of TeX Live alone. The only thing that the installation instructions got right from the start was the part about running the script with all modules. I'll probably… and eventually will try to install the whole TeX Live. Is LuaLaTeX behaving the same way? Answer: no. The permission denied message happened first with folders whose permeissions were not owned by the user, but the root, so I moved the files out of harm's way to another folder . Anothr folder, NOT a subfolder. Then the problem persisted to read folders and even subfolders (directories, subdirectories) with cache filenames and headers that follow So let's not get to apprehensive, It's understandable that say, not reasonable, but understandable maybe? that mtxrun or lua for that matter will stop right before. So the folders were moved right after. Gone out of the binaries. But what I can't understand is why would it try to access cache folders unrelated with anything TeX or header folders for that matter???? This is perhaps more serious than I thought at first. And Let's not blame the TeXLive pre-packaged running under Alpine Linux. To put it in laymans' terms and If anything is clear to me, is that Alpine ir not letting Lua running beserk on the system and its folders, owned by whatever/whoever else, and with pesmissions set elsewhere. It's out of the question. Or it rather be. This is all writh a fresh TeX Live Installation. I mentioned the problem that may arise by questioning the Alpine installation because there were some problems with some binaries from the prepackaged TeX Live put out by Alpine devs. But this is not prepackaged. English-Vietnamese facing pages

Am always up for a challenge, but hope this one is not beyond my possibilities! Have a request to produce a book with English-Vietnamese facing pages. The text doesn't have to be strictly in sync, but generally so. The only ConTeXt guidelines I think I have at the moment are (1) an old module called m-streams (which I am assuming is now obsolete), and (2) an exchange of emails on this list over a decade about bilingual typesetting. It won't bother me too much if I have to tell the intending author and his editor that this might be beyond me, but before taking that stance, I have a couple of simple questions that someone might be able to respond to. And, BTW, the Vietnamese font is not the problem. Tex Gyre Pagella seems to be able to cope with that at least! Q 1: Has anybody reading this actually produced a bilingual book (it doesn't have to be en-vn) with ConTeXt? And if so would you be prepared to offer me some basic guidelines? Q 2: There is some guidance from Wolfgang on https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Columns towards the end of that page. I tried two or three pages of the first chapter of the book, placing English in outputstream[one] and the Vietnamese in outputstream[two] and kind of got a suitable result except that the last paragraph of both languages ended up BEFORE the chapter began. No idea why. The rest seemed okay. So my question is whether or not Wolfgang's sample (where he says 'a simple example but I had to write the splitter myself') would be sufficient for me to put the book together? Q 2: I suppose the third question is whether, since LMTX, there has been any further development in the 'streams' mechanism that might help me? Julian

Is there a better (automatic, consistent) way to insert separators between non-instantiated (foot)notes (i.e., where there is at least one \note involved with an immediately preceeding/following \footnote or \note? looking at the source, the obvious hack was apparent but ... not ideal. Hi, I'm quite sure, that this worked some time ago with the standard font (LM): \setff{smallcaps} Normal and \bf bold Small Caps. (See also https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Bold_small_caps) But it does not work with the latest ConTeXt version. How could I get bold small caps with the latest version please? Userdata environment

Problems with building texlive/context from its sources

Dear developers, I am/become one of the texlive mantainers on flathub a more or less recent and new approach for establishing a linux packaging format. The flatpak packages are usually build from source and so is the texlive package. You can find it under https://github.com/flathub/org.freedesktop.Sdk.Extension.texlive/tree/branc… . The file https://github.com/flathub/org.freedesktop.Sdk.Extension.texlive/blob/branc… is the build manifest which lists the files and commands/additional steps needed for the build process. The current build of texlive works well with pdflatex/lualatex/xelatex but with the context part I have some problems. Therefore, I would appreciate any help with the following questions: 1) Is context included in the texlive-20230313* tarballs or do I have to download it in an extra step? 2) If context is included in the texlive-20230313* tarballs, do I have to additionally download luametatex or is luametatex a part of context? 3) If luametatex is via context in the texlive-20230313* tarballs, how do I build it? Sorry for those (perhaps obvious) questions but I have to admit that I find the texlive building process quite confusing. Also, I could not find any installation guide that covers the scenario of building context within a texlive 2023 installation from its sources on linux. Thanks in advance and regards Jakob

update / punctuation / math

Hi, There have been some mails about punctuation spacing and a fix was added to the engine that related to that. As tests showed it to be okay so we made an update. It took a bit longer than normal because we were in the middle of some other math stuff: additional fonts and extensibles. Daniel Flipo maintains a few math fonts (like concrete, xcharter, erewhon, kp, euler) and the last few weeks more extensive support for extensibles was added and concrete became quite nice too, so these fonts make a nice benchmark. As they are part of the lmtx install and we made sure to support them. In the process we adapted our 2023 roadmap of which part is attached (we included an example end then decided to show of concrete). When we go through the process of 'upgrading' we noticed some interesting names for symbols and 'constructs'. Quite some come from plain and/or amsmath (in the past taco and aditya did some porting to context) and we're not always sure if something is really used (or even what it was intended for) so if you notice something weird or missing, let us know. Examples are welcome too. It might also be that something can go away because it's obsolete or never needed (so far we could resist te kick-out-symbole-name temptation when it comes to symbol names that we think no sane user can remember or imagine to be there). When often add extra tests to the test suite (math subsection). Hans & Mikael ps. Alan and I are still messing around with some cross referencing. That code is still experimental and can have issues that we're looking at but hard to nail down (huge complex cross-referencing documents). We have already discarded italic correction and now are replacing rules with extensibles. Much was already in place (and applied) but experiences with type one antykwas made us review some \OPENTYPE\ fonts. Not using rules makes some of them look better. The effect is subtle and probably not \AMS\ compliant, but we think that it will work out well for simple math like fractions of decimal numbers. Consequently, we have added to our shrinking to-do list the burden to investigate whether we can remove those obsolete code paths from the engine. After all, who needs italic correction, who prefers ugly rules to beautiful glyphs, and who understands all these font parameters? Furthermore, after all these years, we don't expect \OPENTYPE\ font and \UNICODE\ math technologies to improve much; we don't know if \MICROSOFT\ is developing their technology further at all. Therefore, we are confident that what we are doing is the way it should have been done when math was upgraded. Hopefully users will notice the improvements. \stopitem \startitem Math also means physics and units (that topic was brought up recently on the list by Gavin). Therefore, because we're in cleanup mode, we decided to eliminate some more. With \ISO\ now in place for a long time, we are going to ignore the existence of the inch as unit from now on. The unit will probably remain in the engine for nostalgic reasons, but it will no be accepted in MWE. Instead, we will provide some more modern, culturally correct, kid-friendly units that we will use in examples, manuals and such. Because the four-person strong team dealing with this wants to avoid making mistakes, we will go through a careful and scientifically sound process of calibration first, using a selected tex savvy audience. We expect these new units to be stable a month from now. Believe it or not, in the process of documenting all this, we found a buglet in the new math dimension spacing, so it has already paid off. Expect to hear more in a month or so, and enjoy your inches as long as you still can. In case you wonder how this relates to math other than mentioned: the math subsystem has 'mu' as adaptive unit, and that inspired is to come up with one for text (in addition to two new more or less fixed units). \stopitem \startitem The math family model is a fundamental concept in \TEX\ but we think we can do without. First of all, \OPENTYPE\ math fonts have (design) script and scriptscript sizes built in, so for that we have one family. Second, only full bold (heavy) makes sense as companion for regular math which is something that in practice we can support otherwise. So, this makes us consider dropping families altogether which then provides (mem) space for even more classes or dictionaries. If we nevertheless decide to keep families, we can certainly go with less than we have now, maybe two (or four if we want to be generous and also resemble original tex) of them is enough. We cannot imagine users wanting more. As a side note: completely divorcing families could make the math engine a bit leaner. It is hard to explain and users only care about the outcome. So more on this later. \stopitem \startitem Another path to explore is to identify the few building blocks that are needed for typesetting math, and then doing a bit more at the tex end. Of course that would nil quite some earlier effort, which is a bit frustrating, but still \unknown\ maybe the math engine can be reduced to a fraction of what is is now. \stopitem \startitem When we look at the math fonts and some characters in there, we sometimes wonder what makes sense. For some, searching in e.g. arXiv brings no hit. Basically we have obsolete math symbols and currently used one. That made us think about ancient math versus modern math, just like there is ancient greek and modern greek. Because math is a script one can wonder about obsolete math dialects with symbols just like there are plenty deal scripts in \UNICODE. We already are working on dictionaries but another axis is useability. \stopitem \startitem We no longer have the small / large extensible family model so we can simplify delimiters in the engine. Not something users should worry about. \stopitem \startitem We're not sure why math is considered stable because everything moved forward. Therefore we're preparing a bid for extra math symbols as needed in modern explorative and daring math thesis. When symbols are really used, and we have proof of that, it should be possible to get them un \UNICODE, just like all these emoji. In math articles one can find visualizing like $x\leftarrow x$ and there are plenty of \TEX\ commands that have arrow or hook in their names. If you look at the names of math symbols plenty are kind of weird. We think it is not natural and are considering a \quote {natural language math input} project, where you tell what it is and get the symbols you expect. For that we need to analyze typeset math and from the context as well as visualization derive a dataset that we can feed into a machine learning subsystem that then can be used to turn input into type. We have several stages in mind spanning years but it can be fun. meta-imp-fen in mkxl?

Hi all, I wanted to use a rightbrace as background for a table, as defined in meta-imp-fen.mkiv. Unfortunately, I can't get it to work, for 2 reasons: 1. meta-imp-fen doesn't appear to be ported to mkxl. 2. When I try to compile with the --luatex switch, I get this error message: tex error > tex error on line 101 in file /mnt/shared/lmtx/tex/texmf-context/tex/context/base/mkiv/meta-imp-dum.mkiv: ! Numbering of figures after defining a new float

Hello everybody, I am still working on the previously mentioned project, consisting out of different parts. There are about 25 chapters in each part and most of the chapters contain figures. When using the predefined figure environment, then all figures in the figure-list are placed correctly though at each part the numbering restarts. Now I tried to implement for each part its own float environment, which enables me to produce a figure-list per part with subtitels. How ever in the newly defined floats there is no continuous numbering i.e. chapternumber.serialnumber. Instead each float get the chapter number only. How to get the numbering right? Hi Hans, "characters.tex.toutf" only works if there is a backslash somewhere in its input string. If you need the help of an administrator, there is a list of administrators at Context_wiki:Administrators. There are *no* topics on the Discussions page, and the Administrators page doesn't exist. This causes me to be concerned that no one is there. Is anyone there? In case anyone wonders why I am asking... I was looking at the wiki page for "\listing", which is no longer in Mk IV (and may also not be in Mk II (I didn't check)). In 2015 both Hans and Wolfgang mentioned in this list that the command was gone. I just edited the wiki to note that the command was gone, should anyone venture there, but I think even better would be to delete the wiki page entirely. However, that sounds like a decision for senior management, and I was going to ask them, but I couldn't find the right corner office. Thoughts? Jim

Spacing problem around decimal point

Hi List, I’m getting strange spaces around some decimal points after a clean LMTX install. MWE: \starttext \startformula v = \frac{1.32}{1.41} = 0.935 \stopformula \stoptext This produces the result attached below. The 1.32 looks fine, but the next two numbers have excess space around the decimal point. Adding the line \showmakeup[mathglue] %\mathspacingmode=1 to the preamble reveals that the second and third decimal points are being treated as binary operators. It’s very strang. I've been using myself the simple_Context package for SublimeText which I scavenged a while ago before it was made unavailable (I wanted to attach but it's too big for the list). But it's sort of a dead-end. Open to anything from vim/neovim to emacs or more exotic. Maybe it would be nice to show the config. xtable - what might prevent splitting?

I cannot understand why my xtable setup does not split to the next page. As far as I can see I have it set up correctly... though obviously not! What might be wrong? Below is a sample. How to prefix the list of figures with part number?

Hi, I am struggling with the last row of a table which, according to its author, should have a black bottomframe, but gray (I am using a defined 'lightgray') for the sides. The first row has a black frame. All intermediate rows have gray. I have no difficulty achieving the first row, and the black bottomframe for the last row, but I have been unable to get the last row sides to be gray. The last row (22) has a black bottomframe, but how could I achieve 'lightgray' for rightframe, leftframe? If I add a new setup e.g. \setupTABLE[row][last][rightframe=on,leftframe=on,framecolor=lightgray] then I lose the bottomframe in black. I have tried all kinds of combinations but unsuccessfully. Building fomula

Good afternoon everybody, I should place two faily simple formulae next to each other, they should be coupled by ‘or’. What I have now is, that the formulae indeed are next to each other and separated by ‘or’, but the result of the second formula is moved und this formula to the next line. In the setup of book there would be enough place, if I coud decrease the space left and right of the ‘or’. How can I achieve this? Problem with \stoptabulate

I have a technical manual style document that requires a lot of examples to be included. They can easily be typeset with a table so I thought I would save myself some typing by defining macros for the various bits of a tabulate table. Thus I have: \def\startMyExample{\starttabulate[|r|c|l|p|]} \def\stopMyExample{\stoptabulate} \def\MyExampleItem#1#2#3{\NC #1 \NC \rightarrow \NC #2 \NC #3 \NC\NR} \starttext Here are some examples... \startMyExample \MyExampleItem{before}{after}{change before into after} \MyExampleItem{straw}{gold}{Rumpelstiltskin} \stopMyExample %\stoptabulate \stoptext The problem is that \stopMyExample doesn't work - the \stoptabulate isn't recognised and I get an end of file reached error. If use a straight \stoptabulate then it works as expected. That's fine but it would be nice, from an aesthetic point of view, to have start & stop 'paired' commands in the source. Hi, I updated LMTX. Most improvements are in 'math' as Mikael and I keep mailing down some details that bother us. We also have some updates in the math fonts that Daniel Flipo maintains so the repertoire of alternatives with all-right math support grows. As a side note: lmtx installs nicely on my android (12) phone (userland ubuntu) and luametatex compiles nicely from source (as it's aarch64) in about a minute. No decent editor to text real documents but who knows what a properly dockable (linux supporting) phone can do in a few years. A simple \starttext \dorecurse{1000}{\samplefile{tufte}\par} \stoptext runs at over 55 pps (85 pps on my laptop). Making a format takes 4 seconds (second time, after caching, which is about twice the time my laptop takes). Printing problem

Hi all, I have had some printing problems lately, and it is not perfectly clear to me (or to Hans, we have discussed this a bit) whether it is the printer that has a lack of memory or if the pdf files are somehow corrupted. It might have to do with type3 fonts. I attach a pdf file that does not print on our printer at work. Or well, it prints almost all of the page, but stops at the word "negativa" (or was it "egenvärden", I do not have the printout here right now). Then the printer also prints an error report about some "offending command". So, a request: If you have an easy access to a printer, can you print this page and report back if all of it comes out, or what is happening? Thanks /Mikael

Absolute positioning of \startcombination... \stopcombination

Hi, I would like to position a combination of images where the centre of the combination coincides with the centre of the text area of a page. In the example below I have made the combination into a layer thinking that this would be the easiest way to position it where I wanted. However to position in the centre of the page I would need to know the size of the combination and use this to calculate the x and y values for positioning of the layer. I have looked at the Wiki page on image size of combinations but still cant figure out how to do it. Any suggestions on how to go about this or is their a better way? Automatic numbering of footnotes set with \note (not with \footnote)

Good Morning to all list members. I am writing a document with very long footnotes, and in order not to break (in the source file) the flow of the main text, instead of using the \footnote macro, I introduce the footnotes using \note[label] at the point where the call to the footnote should be placed, and in a separate place in the source file I write the text associated to the footnote using \footnotetext[label]. This works quite well and allows to create a more readable source file. There is, nevertheless, a small inconvenience, and it is that when processing the document ConTeXt goes numbering automatically the notes, attending to the order in which they are, in the source file, the \footnotetext commands. Would there be a simple way so that the automatic numbering follows the order of the \note commands, and not that of \footnotetext? Bug in columns

Hi, There are some footnotes in my text. When I use \startcolumns...\stopcolumns, the locations of footnotes are not right. How to extend an existing macro to take optional parameters?

I have an existing macro that I'd like to extend. The current definition is \define[3]\mycommand{...} which I'd like to extend to take an optional 4th parameter plus an optional setup parameter. Thus I currently invoke it as: \mycommand{aa}{bb}{cc} and I'd like to be able to extend it so that any of the following can be used: \mycommand{aa}{bb}{cc} \mycommand{aa}{bb}{cc}{dd} \mycommand{aa}{bb}{cc}{dd}[ee] or \mycommand[ee]{aa}{bb}{cc}{dd} % if this is more the ConTeXt way where {dd} is the optional extra parameter and, if it is present, then [ee] can also be optionally added (because it controls how {dd} is printed). If it helps, the actual body of the macro can easily be a call to Lua so it's fine if the function takes 5 params where 4 and 5 can be nil or empty strings. I've trawled through syst-aux.mkiv but it only covers optional numbers of [ ] or { } but not combinations of both (which given the vast numbers of combinations is perhaps not surprising!). \unit parser ignoring case, in some cases.

Hello list, I continue to work with the \unit command, and found some behavior very surprising. When I try to register units with capital letter names, it breaks lowercase metric prefixes. For example, registering C=coulomb, K=kelvin and N=newton breaks metric units cm, kg, and ns. The file below demonstrates the behavior. Obviously, I can use full names in my document. However, I would like the standard SI symbols, which are single capital letters, to work for me and my less TeX-savvy colaborators. Thanks! natural table oddities

Working on the documentation for “natural tables” I stumbled upon a few oddities/problems. I’d like to know if there are misunderstandings on my part or if the behavior is intentional. BTW enattab.pdf is missing in the LMTX distribution. ## Options * before/after/inbetween values don’t appear anywhere. * spaceinbetween should insert between rows, but nothing happens. * splitoffset doesn’t seem to change anything. * What’s samepage for? ## Addressing cells * It’s not possible to address single cells with \setupTABLE, or is it? * There’s \setupTABLE[header], but not "footer" (or "section"); since we have TABLEhead and TABLEfoot, IMO "head" and "foot" would make sense. * Row 1 is the first row of TABLEbody. I couldn’t find how to address the first line of TABLEbody. * Is it possible, and how, to use odd/even only for the body? * If I format a column, e.g. \setupTABLE[c][-1][color=red], body and foot are formatted, but not the same column in header. (I found out, if I use TD instead of TH in the header, it works.) * I don’t understand the addressing options "start" and "one". ## Formatting * maxwidth doesn’t seem to have an effect, neither on the whole table nor on a column. * textwidth works only for the whole table. * width gets stretched if option=stretch; i.e. you can’t fix the width of single cells or columns. ## Page breaking * What’s the difference between [split=repeat] and [split=yes,header=repeat], i.e. which sense makes the header option)? * Is there an option to repeat the footer (as the last line of each page)? (I’d imagine to use it in an invoice or similar calculation for a subtotal – that would imply some more magic…) Hraban

extra lines in PDF annotations

Everything is fine, if XML has Unix line endings (LF char). Attachment contains the proper line ending in each case. Could anyone confirm what appears to be a tricky issue? Did dotless i disappear ?

Hi Hans, I just noticed that the dotless i « \i » is not anymore recognized in ConTeXt. Of course one can nowadays find other ways to have it typeset, but in old documents which are included as inputs one has to correct this manually (for instance in French « connaître » was typed as « conn\^{\i}tre »). Bug in maths environment: thematrix

Hi Hans, I noticed that in some situations the command \thematrix does not show all its arguments correctly: some parts are omitted in the typeset formula. In some occasions adding some groupings solves the issue, but not always. Hi, When I reinstall LMTX on my linux 64 system, the first executing install.sh gives the error message: tex error > tex error on line 34 in file /home/garfileo/public/context/tex/texmf-context/tex/context/base/mkiv/type-set.mkiv: ! Hi, I'm trying to use a description environment in conjunction with an itemize with the latest luametatex. Is this supposed to work? Visual highlighted text with title, mix of enumeration and framedtext

Hi, I want to typeset a "Good to know" section that is visually highlighted and can spawn across multiple pages. In LaTeX this would be possible with the mdframed package. See the attached screenshot for an example how it might look like (it is copied out of page 4: Definition: Inhomogeneous linear of the mdframed documentation: http://mirrors.ctan.org/macros/latex/contrib/mdframed/mdframed.pdf) I have searched in the wiki and found \defineenumeration: This is near of that what I need. However I explicitly does not need an enumeration (so no number or counter). Also I am not sure if I can set a background and so on. The other possibility is \defineframedtext. For example this goes much in the direction that I want: \definecolor[gbackground][s=0.98] \defineframedtext[gtk][frame=on, offset=5pt, background=color, width=0.95\textwidth, backgroundcolor=gbackground] However, there does not seem a possibility to define a title and it seems to not work on multiple pages. Is there a mix of an enumeration and framedtext that can produce something like in the attached picture? Best, Gerion

Problem with \setuplayout parameters being ignored

Hi I'm having a strange problem with the \setuplayout command with the parameters being ignored. In the code below the only parameter which does get setup is the backspace parameter, the header, footer, width, and margin parameters are setup differently according to the log. I'm probably missing something fairly obvious so hints would be helpful. The document I'm trying to setup will probably be a maximum of 50 pages and I would like to reduce the space at the top and bottom of the page. [m-database] How to properly add module arguments?

Dear list, ## The Incredibly Short Version I am trying to extend m-database, and I want to add a flag to control behavior. I can get it to work, but I am having trouble understanding how to do it properly. ## The Short Version I have a project where I wish to incorporate many CSV files as Natural Tables. I want to keep the headers in the CSV files so they're useful in other contexts. The `m-database` module doesn't have a feature to suppress the header row, from what I can see. (I know `handlecsv` can do this, but I'm having troubles with that; if the `m-database` line of inquiry doesn't work out, I'll go back it, but I figure I'll focus on this solution for now.) Looking at the module sources, I can implement the functionality I need in the Lua part of the module, but: I seem to only be able to bodge in additional arguments for the commands in the module. On first try, I got the error: `tex error > tex error on line 30 in file /Users/pmazaitis/Opt/context/tex/texmf-context/tex/context/modules/mkiv/m-databaseplus.mkiv: ! Undefined control sequence` And then: `The control sequence at the end of the top line of your error message was never \def'ed.` Looking at the docs points me to a solution using `\def`, but it's not clear to me how that's working in the case of the database module (the database module seems to be initializing these values someplace else?). If I \def the settings variable in m-database.mkiv, I can get it to work, but I don't think that's the correct way to go about this. Question: how do I properly define new module arguments for the database module? ## The Long Version, With MWE ### Files Associated With the MWE Apologies for all of the file inclusions, but I want to be complete. Here's the .csv file I'm using for the MWE: --- begin database-mwe.csv --- Ref. Some of these lists are quite long, so I want to use a TABLEhead to replicate the headings at the top of a new page. I don't think there's a way to automate this with `m-database`, so I'm okay with hard-coding the headers. This does mean I get a double header row at the top of the table. I want to suppress the header row; I'd like to implement this behavior in the module behind a switch. (I'm using the `asciimode` environment to dodge problems with unescaped `%` characters and Greek letters. I tried adding the startasciimode/stopasciimode commands to various keys in the \defineseparatedlist command, but I didn't get anywhere with it - I got errors. A problem for another time...) I think I've got a good handle on how to do this in Lua, but I'm struggling with what to add to the switch appropriately. In attempting to add a switch, I tried the following. Based off of https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Modules#Modules_writing_guidelines, I added a stanza to the appropriate interface file: --- begin stanza added to i-database.xml --- <cd:parameter name="skipheader"> <cd:constant type="yes"/> <cd:constant type="no" default="yes"/> </cd:parameter> --- end stanza added to i-database.xml --- I modeled that after the stanza for the argument `strip`. I think that's the only thing I need to do in the interface file. Changing the i-database.xml file does not break the build. However, as soon as I add the skipheader argument to the m-database.mkiv file: --- begin definition in m-database.mkiv --- \setupdatabase [\c!separator={,}, \c!quotechar=, \c!commentchar=, \c!strip=\v!no, \c!skipheader=\v!no, % <- Added, following the pattern with strip \c!before=, \c!after=, \c!first=, \c!last=, \c!left=, \c!right=] --- end definition in m-database.mkiv --- ...the build fails (with the error from the Short Version section). If I then add the following \def to m-database.mkiv before the \setupdatabase command: \def\c!skipheader {skipheader} ...the build succeeds! I can now pass that settings value to m-database.lua and use it to modify the processing logic. My question: how do I \emph{properly} define new module arguments for the database module? How to print the section number of a reference in ConTeXt?

I've set a \pagereference in a chapter, and want to print its chapter title and page number, ex. "You can find more information in "Fish" on p. 1" (where "Fish" is the title of the chapter or section). I've tried looking all through the wiki, thinking this was a basic feature, but couldn't get anything to work. I even tried my own custom macros, see below, but strangely, it won't give me the correct title, it tells me the title of the current chapter, instead of the title in which the reference was placed: \define[1]\dropref{% \textreference[#1]{\expanded{\currentstructuretitle}} } \starttext \startchapter[title=Fish] \dropref{hello} \input knuth \stopchapter \startchapter[title=Whales] You can more information at \at{page}[hello] in \at{chapter}[hello] or \about[hello]. \stopchapter \stoptext Strangely both at commands give the correct information, but \about doesn't. How do I place a reference somewhere in a text, then later tell which chapter title and page number that reference appeared in? --Joel

Bug with \startnarrow?

Disappearing footnote in figure / tabulate

Hi, I have a strange case where a footnote in a tabulate disappears. Strangely, I *cannot* reproduce the behaviour in the MWE below. At first, I thought it must have something to do with \startpostponingnotes, but it seems that this currently isnt't necessary anymore, or at least only for extreme tables. Is that correct? I'll try to narrow it down. Any hints how I could debug that issue? As I'm again working with XML files: Is it possible that this behaviour is caused by some sort of nested setups which makes the footnotes not bubble up? Float control

Hi everyone, I've recently had to typeset a document that gave me some headaches with the floats. The floats where jumping around, appearing in a different order than in the source file, tables ended up split up at weird points, some positioning keys had not the intended effect (e.g. top), <page> moved the float more than seemed necessary for me... I know, TeX's float positioning algorithm should be rather reliable and stable, and it's quite possible that I'm messing things up in my setups-especially since my source files are XML. Anyway, I'd like to learn more about the whole float issue. Is there anything particular I could read to learn more about the whole thing? Maybe I'm missing out on something fundamental... How to place a page reference multiple times?

I need to report every chapter that a particular macro appeared. I would do this by placing `\pagereference[sample]` inside the macro definition, so whenever it is called, it marks the reference info. But I can't seem to get references to work with multiple reference locations marked, example: \starttext You can find it at \at{page}[sample] in \at{chapter}[sample]. \chapter{Fish} \pagereference[sample] \input knuth \input knuth \pagebreak \chapter{Whales} \input knuth \pagereference[sample] \stoptext (you can see in this example, it only finds `\pagereference[sample]` on page 1 and ignores the second appearance. Ideally, I need to be able to output something like, "See examples in Chapter 3, 8, 19" (because those chapters contain a particular macro that I marked with \pagereference. Or, if even possible, see chapters 3 (p. 22), 8 (p. 40), and 20 (though the first example is fine. Is there a way to place a page reference multiple times, so multiple pages or chapter details will appear? --Joel

If they do, they are effectively reduced to their intersection with the media box. https://wiki.contextgarden.net/PDF_Boxes displays an image of (what I guess) the ordinary case: /CropBox fits inside /MediaBox. \setupparagraphs - can they run over two pages?

I have the following setup for side-by-side paras. \defineparagraphs[Two][n=2] \setupparagraphs[Two][1][width=.1\textwidth,style=\bfx,align=tolerant] \setupparagraphs[Two][2][width=.9\textwidth,style=normal,align=tolerant] My difficulty is that while there is only ever just a couple of numbers in the left-hand 'column', the right-hand 'column' may have several lengthy paragraphs. If I have one relatively short \startTwo followed by one that is much longer, it will be forced to start on the next page, leaving too much empty space on the previous page. It is probable that getting this environment to split across pages is not possible. I can try very different approaches (columns, tables) to solve my problem, but I thought I would at least ask first. Julian
