Compilation problem with latest beta

Hi everyone, I was compiling a document with the version of ConTeXt that comes with TeXLive 2010, and now tried to compile it the latest beta of the Minimals installation. textcommand=\uppercase in setuphead is propagated to lower level settings

Hello. I apply textcommand=\uppercase to a section heading but it is propagated to subheadings. Is there a good reason for this. Some other notes in this test design: 1) textcommand=\uppercase does not work with luatex engine 2) textcommand=\WORD works in the luatex engine, but the propagation of uppercase to subheadings is also encountered. 3) numbercolor=red only works with luatex. I submit the pdf's also. Switchting between betas

Hi everyone, I've been using ConTeXt (MKIV) through TeXLive 2010 until now, but wanted to try to use the Minimals installation. The installation went fine, but the latest beta version was not able to compile my document (I'll be posting about that separately). What I'm confused about is this: Does only the beta-version have MkIV/LuaTeX support? More generally, is there a way to switch to the beta version of a specific date? Considering that new betas might break the compilation of existing documents, there would have to be a way for me to tell people "compile this document with version xxxx" -- even if it's just a specific revision number. Hi Is it possible to fill out a space between two outlines? As for an example, I'd like to draw two circles (same center, one bigger than the other) and fill out the difference. Something like the letter "O". Is this actually possible? The only reference to this I found was on wikipedia: "Most notably, paths can have only one segment (so that regions are simply connected), (...)" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MetaPost) I thought I ask here before I put this aside. As a workaround I fill out the bigger one with color black and the smaller one with color white, but I need to put this on different background colors, so the use of this is very limited. How does it work with fonts (Metafont)? Who's filling that out, because thats also just based on outlines, right? Thanks Adam

I think the same happened some time ago when the not-loading (horrible word, my english is rotting) of Latin Modern was still an experimental feature. Have you considered authoring in something besides context? Say TEI XML or Docbook, or even markdown (if possible)? If markdown is suitable, then you can end up with both epub and context at the end. Or if using TEI or docbook, you can write a map file (something I have been trying to do) and typeset the xml file directly with context. I'm always happier knowing that I can get as many different output types from a single source as possible. mtxrun --script texworks --start doesn't work as expected

Dear Hans, dear list, I have tried starting Texworks as I usually would via "mtxrun --script texworks --start", but it doesn't load any Context-specific configuration-files anymore. Instead the script creates a new directory tree in whatever directory I was when I ran it: "selfautoparent:texmf-context/context/data/texworks" with empty subdirectories for the config files. I'm running the minimals (MKIV only) on Ubuntu Lucid with context version 2011.02.16 19:30. drop-cap quote character

Ideally, \DropCap would notice a piece of leading punctuation and drop it as well. Instead, it seems to look at the punctuation and give up. simplefonts module in TL2010 fails to work

problem with bibliography

Hi Hans and all, the current beta has a problem with a bibliography entry I have in my project. I can't quite put my finger to it, but here's a fairly minimal example. Problem with typing to the grid

Hello ConTeXist, Is there a way to achieve alignment all of texts in a grid lines? The attached example shows, that inserting of picture violate fixed spacing inside the \startframedtext \stopframedtext environment (on left on line 22 ) and final sequel of the text is not right too. (from line 25) It's way at some point the rate of return text back to the grid? Or it is necessary to determine the amount of Figures to match multiples of \lineheight? Hi, even though I didn't manage to reproduce the problem in a minimal example, I would like to report the following problem: Using any other value than "force" with placefigure, like this ... \placefigure[force,no,fit,00]{...}{{\externalfigure[fig_1][frame=off,width=\dimexpr(\textwidth-00pt)]}} ... adds an extra vertical space (1.5 lines) above all section headings that come after this placefigure! Creating documentation from source-files

Hi, I do still struggle with the creation of documentation derived from a source file. I tis quite difficult to nail down the hicking point. When I run context --ctx=s-mod test.tex I get the following error: pages > flushing realpage 4, userpage 2 structure > sectioning > subject @ level 3 : 0.0.0 -> Introduction .Error: PDF file is damaged - attempting to reconstruct xref table... I have a strange problem in one of my documents. When I uncomment the line with \setupalign[hz,hanging] everything works fine. When I use it, I get this error because of a verbatim typing segment: \obeyedline ->\par \doverbatimendofline ->\dostoptagged \obeyedline \par \ifconditional \verbat... l.10 \dodisplayverbatimstop \ctxcommand ...\directlua \zerocount {commands.#1} \dodotypeblockverbatim ..., nature = "display", }} \dostoptagged \endofverbat... l.71 \stoptyping ! ==> Fatal error occurred, no output PDF file produced! mtx-context | fatal error: return code: 1 Here is the troublemaker: \starttyping test; äüöAR \test \Context \stoptyping Interestingly I was not able to produce a real minimal example, because when I remove everything except these lines, its working fine again. So there has to be at least some lines of text to break stuff. Oh yeah, and it seems that using simplefonts and Minion also plays a role. Can somebody have a look at this, please? The attached file like it is does not compile here.

HTML-like "title" attribute

I'm playing with some lua markdown parser[1], already added ConTeXt output support except for two minor features. HTML links and images can have a "title" attribute that shows like a tooltip, but I don't seem to find a way to do similar trick in ConTeXt, any ideas? \tooltip seems to be the closest but it requires JS which means AR only, also seems one have to click for the tooltip ti show which is not exactly the same behaviour. Hi all, I noticed that although mtxrun preloads some of the context libs that doesn’t cover everything available during an ordinary mkiv run. What would be the canonical way to load additional libs like “luat-ini” &c. on demand? “environment.loadluafile()”? Can this be configured globally? Is it wise to mess with “own.libs” in mtxrun? Dear ConTeXt folks, could you please share your experiences with or point me to a resource dealing with the following issue. I need to evaluate some physics experiments where I have some values which got measured. I thought I could use ConTeXt with LuaTeX to do all the calculations instead of the calculator and enter the results by hand or a spreadsheet program. Would I enter the values (not many) at the top of the TeX document and refer to them in the other places? Is an extra file a better approach? Braces in TexLive MKIV

When I recently upgraded to TexLive MKII, I learned that \lq, etc. no longer worked in that version but that \lbrace still did. Today, I tried MKIV and find that \lbrace does not work in MKIV. So, I tried \braceleft because \quoteleft worked in TexLive 2010 MKII. Neither \lbrace nor \braceleft work in MKIV. What is now the proper representation for this character? Using a very recent download of TexLive 2010 (MKII) on my PC, my success generating a useful table of contents has been somewhat limited. I can't figure out how to put the title, "Contents," in the font I desire. The various parameters I found in the documentation affect the chapter titles and the page numbers but nothing I've found allows me to control the title of the ToC. What am I overlooking? I would also like for the unnumbered "chapter" titles, such as introduction or preface, to align with the other chapter titles, not with their numbers. If I'm in a later chapter than the current section is defined in, it shows up anyway. I'd like to prevent that. 2. If I'm in a chapter that doesn't have sections, I'd like the chapter name to show up instead (without the §). I'm not sure at all how to go about doing this. I suspect the answer is to use plain TeX but I don't understand TeX's conditional system well enough to figure out how to make it work (nor ConTeXt's marking system). Chapters not sowing up in ToC

When attempting to place only the chapter number on the first page of a chapter, the chapters do not appear in the ToC & the ToC does not display. Inserting #2 just before the last } in the definition for MyChapterCommand causes the ToC to appear with chapter names although it and the chapters are ugly. Is it necessary to include chapter names at the beginning of chapters? Perhaps this is intended because leaving chapter names off the beginning of chapters would reduce the value of the ToC. Hi, I thought that if a font does not have certain (accented) glyphs, then MkIV fakes a fallback. But that does not happen. Consider, for example, Delicious font, that does not have scedilla. Using that in a document fails silently. \usemodule[simplefonts] \setmainfont[Delicious] \starttext sş \stoptext Is it possible to fake that character? Problems with (features of?) hangaround text

Hello, I'd need to place a picture and let it be flowed by some text from the right side. My observation is that only one (= the first) paragraph flows the picture correctly (see the "\input tufte" only case); see the attached example. It there a way how to: - enable heads (e.g. \subject) in the hang-around area (see the "Ccc" text placement)? - enable more than one paragraph in the hang-around area (see the knuth being \input)? - enable "tabulate" (see "TTT ttt" and "UUU uuu" lines)? (The "C" "tabulate" style is defined in the way that the rightmost column should have fixed width of 2 in, whilst the leftmost column should have remaining width; "remaining" in this case should mean \textwidth minus width-of-the-picture (minus some gap).) I can imagine that \(start/stop)hangaround command is a bit limited and/or experimental in use; anyway - is there another way how to "earmark" some area for a picture and to use the "remaining" space for text flowing "as usual" with less restrictions? Dear ConTeXt folks, I am using the Neo keyboard layout [1], which enables me to directly enter several UTF-8 characters. The dot »·« is one of those characters [2] and I like to use it in math mode instead of `\cdot`. But in math mode it is some kind of bold lower dot (see attachment) and not ·. In works fine “text mode”. \starttext $a · b = a \cdot \text{ (\\cdot) } b = ab$ in text · \stoptext Is the wrong UTF-8 character used or can ConTeXt be adapted to use »·« as would like to? Hello, I want to have both a halfline space before and after blockquotations. Normally, this works fine; after the quotation the main text snaps back to the grid (see page 3 of the example file). \setupdelimitedtext [blockquote] [spacebefore=halfline] However, this fails when the blockquote is the first element on the page, either because a new blockquote starts on the top of the page (cf. p. 1) or because a blockquote continues from the last page (cf. p. 2). I checked index in my file and found that some words which should be in the same group are scattered. Also, the order of list doesn't follow the order of korean letter. the order should be ㄱ, ㄴ, ㄷ, ㄹ, ㅁ, ㅂ, ㅅ, ㅇ, ㅈ, ㅊ, ㅋ, ㅌ, ㅍ, ㅎ In english index, Capital letter and small letter are mixed. Chapter Command causes ToC to not display correctly

The code below seems to work fine when the first MyChapterCommand is commented out and the second one is active. However, when the first one is active and the second one is commented out, the ToC does not display properly. What could be causing this to happen? Hello, just a brief question - - is it possible to affect the vertical space after [\starttabulate ...] \stoptabulate? In the example attached, the space after each "tabulate" is too wide. I'd like to achieve space closer to "normal spacing", i.e. distance between "B" and "a" (and between "b" and "U") "equal as much as possible" to that between "U" and "V". Is it possible somehow? Symbola font glyph size

Hello, I have some troubles using the Symbola font mentioned some time ago on the mailing list (http://users.teilar.gr/~g1951d/Symbola602.zip) It seems like the font metrics are loaded correctly, but the glyphs in the pdf appear approximately half the size, leaving white space above and next to it. Here is a minimal example: \starttext Gg {\definedfont[file:Symbola602.otf]Gg} Gg \stoptext If I use \definedfont[file:Symbola602.otf sa 2], the glyphs are more or less the good size, but the metrics are way too large. I have no problems with this font in OpenOffice. Any ideas? Vianney

Dear Wolfgang, I tested your example on the multiple families of fonts. It works nicely. I have a few question. There is no toc generated, just only head "Contents" appeared. Hi, I'm trying to change my monospace font with the simplefonts module. It's working, but I'm getting TeX ligatures, namely, -- is being transformed to – and --- to —. I like having this behavior in the body text, but for the code samples it's not acceptable. The default font doesn't do this, so I'm a bit confused. There must be an option I'm not aware of. Hello, I am trying to take as much place as possible for a centered figure on a page. For this, I am doing \placefigure [here] % Place [] % Label {} % Legend { \externalfigure[Figure.pdf] [factor=broad] % Also: max, fit %[width=10cm] % Does not work with factor } By playing with width I get something very close to what I need, but I can see that there's always an initial blank skip at the beginning of the page which is larger than the skip at the bottom. I have tried with \vskip-1.5cm and similar, but this does not move the figure up. How can I take as much place as possible in a page for a figure with identical empty spaces, at the top and the bottom? If I set it to [top] or [center] or [mid] I do not see any difference. thanks, Pau

I try to draw a circle with points on it as following: path p; p:= fullcircle scaled 5cm; draw p; pickup pencircle scaled 2mm; k:=1; for i = 2.2,3,3.5,4.5,5,7,0,.7,1.3: drawpoint point i of p; label.lft(decimal k, point i of p); k:= k+1; endfor; It draws a circle, points, label, but unwanted coordinate numbers like (60.43535, 36.97691), too. I didn't see such numbers in any example in metafun document. If I use z[k] like z[k] = point i of P; draw z[k] Then such a long numbers disappeared. Iwona-Light error

I get the following error message when trying to use the iwona-light font in MKII: Cannot find Iwona-CapsLight.mf. Iwona and Iwona-Heavy load OK. odd end-of-line error w/ Minion Pro

Hi, I'm seeing a strange behavior with Minion Pro in OTF and the simplefont package. I'm not sure if it only happens with simplefont because I don't know how to set up a typescript. In any case, in breaking a line between roman and italic text, ConTeXt is losing a bit of space at the end of line. I thought it might be related to using hz or hanging alignment, or the quality option for protrusion and expansion, but it seems to happen even with these features disabled. Very unclear what could be causing this. Is it a known issue? What is this kind of bad behavior called? Dear All, I have been using Hans' old correspondence module with an xml - rng database as documented for a number of years. I now want to switch to Wolfgang's letter module, but do not know how to connect it to the xml database. For example, commands like: \XMLprocesscontacts[./../../adressen-xml/adressen.xml] \setvariables [letter:data] [address=\XMLflush{address}, prefix=\XMLflush{prefix} ] do not work anymore. qpdf broken with beta since 2001/02/08

Hi I have a problem using qpdf (http://qpdf.sourceforge.net/) with context beta since 2011.02.08. Don't really know whose fault it is, but there might be something wrong with mkiv. All I want to do is generating a linearized (web optimized) pdf using qpdf as hinted on this list (see http://www.ntg.nl/pipermail/ntg-context/2011/055626.html) I was able to use it until context beta 2011.02.08, and getting an error since. Here's what I'm doing: 1) test.tex contains %%% \starttext Hello world! \stoptext %%% 2) running "context test.tex" to make the pdf 3) running "qpdf --linearize test.pdf out.pdf" which creates the optimized out.pdf So up until and including context beta 2011.02.05 everything was working. --- reviczky@calcium ~/Desktop % qpdf --linearize test.pdf out.pdf reviczky@calcium ~/Desktop % --- But since beta 2011.02.08 (10:06) I get just a very brief error: --- reviczky@calcium ~/Desktop % qpdf --linearize test.pdf out.pdf operation for Name object attempted on object of wrong type 2 reviczky@calcium ~/Desktop % :( --- Does anyone have a clue what might go wrong here? Does context beta (mkiv) generates broken pdf's now? But is there as simple way to get a nice curved pointer left or right from the bottom of that rounded rectangle frame?

Dear all, I found the attached oddity in one of my documents produced by context using mkiv. The two words (both clipped in the screenshot) are in the same line (last line in a justified paragraph), yet they are handled differently. Hello, I love tabs for some reason. However when I use them inside \startTEX ... \stopTEX they are exactly 1 character long in MKII and of zero width in MKIV. Is it possible to change that somehow? Hello, The luatex documentation contains in section "7.2.2 Example virtual font" an example how to define a virtual font "cmr10-red". The font is defined by adding the code to the define_font callback. Does some interface exists in contex/mkiv which allows to use such virtual fonts together with the normal font loading code? E.g. could I move the code for the font to some file ("cmr10-red.vflua") so that a request \font\mytest="cmr10-red" will simply find this file and use the code like vf, tfm or otf-files are found and used when needed? -- Ulrike Fischer

Hello, how do I influence the space around titles (i.e heads, in ConTeXt-speak)? What I want to do: 1 Chapter title <there is some whitespace (let's call it #1) here, that I want to change> text in paragraph 1. <thete is some whitespace (#2) here, that I want to change> 1.1 Section title <there is some whitespace (#3) here, that I want to change> text in paragraph 2. <there is some whitespace (#4) here, that I want to change> 1.2 Section title ...and so on. Headers another way

Hello, I'm trying to solve an interesting problem. (The document should be generated by Lua actually, but probably this is not of importance.) I'd need create various headers, but it's not known which command to be used a priori; only their "relative position" is known. The head creating command should be the same (= \HEAD) and the level should be determined by \PUSHHEAD + \POPHEAD commands. I'd need to solve something like this: --- \starttext \HEAD{...} % Should expand to \chapter \PUSHHEAD \HEAD{...} % Should expand to \section \PUSHHEAD \HEAD{...} % Should expand to \subsection \PUSHHEAD \HEAD{...} % Should expand to \subsubsection \PUSHHEAD \HEAD{...} % Should expand to \subsubsubsection \POPHEAD \HEAD{...} % Should expand to \subsubsection again \POPHEAD \POPHEAD \POPHEAD \stoptext --- Any idea how to solve this? (The aim is that Lua should generate or not the \PUSHHEAD + \POPHEAD commands very simply; it's much easier to do this instead to define complicated rules whether to call \section or \subsection at a particular place.) changing title of register displayed with \completeregistername

Hi, I'm trying to get a register to show a title other than the name of the register in the code, and not having much luck. For example, \defineregister[pgtype][pgtypes] \completepgtype produces a page with the title "Pgtype", when I'd like it to say "PostgreSQL Types" instead. (Also, the documentation led me to believe the function should be called \completepgtypes rather than \completepgtype.) The wiki suggests \setupheadtext[name=PostgreSQL Types] on http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Registers but this seems to have no effect, which makes sense to me, because it doesn't seem to have enough information. Hi all, my goal is to use Minion Pro as text face and Myriad Pro as sans serif in headings etc. I use TeXlive, ConTeXt 2009.11.26 16:28, MKiV. I found a typescipt once provided in this list in 2008 and adopted it. When I delete them, the semibold ones get used. My question is: Can anyone provide me some insight on how to use bold and semibold in the same document? Steps would include where to put the fonts (.otf in my case), how to make context know the fonts, writing the typescript, using font features.

JS unicode mapping wrong again

Hi Hans, The latest beta (2011-02-08) gives me again a wrong character using widgets and JavaScript. If I enter \'a I'll get now Æ instead of á. (Though copying that character shows "á" in a text editor, so I guess it's just some mapping that's wrong.) Do you need a minimal example? Adam

strange hang during compilation

Dear all, Today, I got a strange hault during the compilation. I had a file which consists of 13 chapters. It was compiled well before this afternoon when I change the textwidth and textheight. from (12cm, 21cm) to (11cm, 19cm). It works before it reaches somewhere chapter 1 and just stop and do nothing. I check chapters one by one and found that it has problems in ch 1 - ch4 but no problem from ch 5 - to end. I copied whole text in chapter 1 to a new document. but no use. I even checked disk and repair disk, but it is not helpful. The only thing I change is the pagelayout one line. I am using Mac OSX 10.6 and ConTeXt version is 2011.01.31. Hi, I uploaded a new beta: * logging is cleaned up and is now more under directive control (triggered by a request of taco for silent logging) and all messages now go through the same mechanisms (as quite some files were touched there can be typos) * as a consequence one can run context with the option --silent or --silent=struct*,graph* etc in order to get less logging; these map onto the directive logs.blocked * logging looks slightly different as i'm in the process of adding subcategories; on the agenda is language dependent logging (only for non tracing messages) * as a side effect (i just ran into the code) regimes have been adapted a bit and there's now also \startregime[...] .. \stopregime that support nesting (the enable and disable commands are global); modules are always loaded under utf8 * fontgoodies can have postprocessors (maybe the older enhancer mechanism will be done in a similar fashion, predates goodies) * for those who hadn't noticed, the label translations are now in lang-txt.lua so don't patch lang-*.mkiv files. structuring Context code using \input statements.

In all forms of TeX it is my custom to start with a brief main file and call the various components of the document into the input stream with \input statements. The termination of the document is in the main file with a \stoptext statement. This works well with pdftex documents and also with MKII documents. But it fails with MKIV documents. The Context program will read and use an inserted program but will not return to the main text stream in the file that did the inputting. It just displays an * and hangs. (again) wrong page with \finishregisterentry

Hi, when \finishregisterentry is set within a paragraph then the "lastrealpage" gets the value from the page where this respective parapgraph starts. (In the example below it is 4 instead of 5.) That is quite sad when you have long paragraphs. How can I set a register range telling me lastrealpage is exactly the page where the ending mark is set? Attached you may find a minimal example. \tfx and \tf having the same size

Hello, I have noticed that \tfx and \tf yield the same size. For example in the sample below: \tfxx A\tfx A\tf A\tfa A\tfb A\tfc A\tfd A However, the documentation states that tfx should be 0.8 size of tf. Topic-list not becoming active

In the spirit of the presentationstyle s-pre-02 I meticulously copied the relevant statements into my module but the Topics-list is not becoming active. That is, the list of Topic-sheets appears but clicking on them does not bring one to the destination. Nor do the list items get the color given on the \setupinteraction macro. Of course I tried the same with the unmodified s-pre-02 style, but got the same negative result. Is here something changed from mkii->mkiv? Things like buttons for jumping to the next page or to a specific page are still working. It is as if the generated list of Topic's does not contain active items. I have prepared a small example. It shows on the second page uncolored Topic's ABC, PQR and XYZ. symb-was?

In mkii I used the module sym-was. In the current distribution there is the file: ./tex/texmf-context/tex/context/base/symb-was.mkii but not a corresponding mkiv variant, as is the case for the other symb-files in that directory. Could it be this file is missing? Or are the wasy symbols now coming in other way? Hans van der Meer

math: `\overbar` with fractions and subscripts

Dear ConTeXt folks, I do have some problem with the following example (also attached, executed with `context test`). \starttext \startformula \overbar{q} = \frac{\overbar{q}}{\overbar{α_0}} \stopformula In text $\overbar{q} = \frac{\overbar{q}}{\overbar{α_0}}$. \startformula \overbar{q_0} = \frac{\overbar{q}}{\overbar α} \stopformula \stoptext I am using the latest ConTeXt Minimals distribution. $ context --version MTXrun | main context file: /opt/context/tex/texmf-context/tex/context/base/context.mkiv MTXrun | current version: 2011.02.04 10:01 1. The bar divides for subscripts/indices. 2. If you look at the first fraction, the bar is as long as the stroke from the fraction and therefore I think too long. 3. When inlining the fraction in text the bar fuses with the stroke from the fraction. Are these know problems or do I just use the wrong commands? Thanks, Paul

conversionsets fall back in bookmarks

Hi, own conversionsets can be defined eg. like this: \define[1]\TestConversion {(\characters{#1}\characters{#1})} \defineconversion [TestCon] [\TestConversion] As expected this gives "aa" and "bb" etc. Only when using PDF bookmarks these conversions fall back to numbers (see example below). A workaround could be to write these conversions explicitly: \defineconversion [TestCon][{aa},{bb},{cc},{dd},...] Here the "aa" etc conversion is preserved in bookmarks too. Only, it is not very elegant and for long documents with many sections it may lead to typos. Hence, my question: Is there a low-level trick to preserve conversionsets, defined like {(\characters{#1}\characters{#1})}, so they appear in bookmarks, too? Updated vim module

Hi all, I have released a new version of t-vim that relies on the t-filter module. The 2context.vim script that generates a ConTeXt file has changed. The generated file is now much cleaner (and read under a simplified catcodes). You should be able to update to a new version using ConTeXt minimals. This version supports - a syntax highlighting environment - an inline syntax highlighting macro - a macro to syntax highlight external files. See https://github.com/adityam/filter/blob/vim/doc/context/third/vim/vim.txt for brief documentation. The new syntax is not completely backwards compatible! Hopefully, this version will work correctly on all operating systems (No more quotes mess like the previous versions). Aditya
