context not producing synctex output that my synctex program can use

Hi, I've read the wiki, looked at workflows-synctex.tex, searched the web, and scratched my head, all to no avail. So here I am, cap in hand... When I run context, I get a .synctex file which has some information in it, but I can't find any invocation of synctex to return anything useful. Nor does the okular example in the wiki (https://wiki.contextgarden.net/SyncTeX) work for me. Ocular starts, but always on the first page, regardless of what line number I give it. On the other hand, pdftex creates a .synctex file which my copy of synctex find useful. I am using the synctex from the current version of texlive: This is SyncTeX command line utility, version 1.5 Can anyone either (a) enlighten me on what I am doing wrong; or (b) definitively confirm that context is not currently playing nicely with synctex (the wiki notwithstanding) and I should give up this quest for now. Problem with dataset not being populated

I produce a small magazine where the source files are organised into a product and component structure. For each issue, I have a main file with \startproduct <issue no> and then, inside that, several \component[filename] statements, one per article. Each article starts in a standard way, including adding some information to a dataset. At the end of the issue, the dataset information is retrieved to be printed and this is where strange things start to happen. Sometimes the whole issue will compile without problems and the dataset information is retrieved perfectly. I can make edits to both the product file and/or any of the component files and it all recompiles to produce a PDF each time. But at othertimes, something "breaks" and the dataset can't be retrieved or isn't created. Everything else compiles fine but there is simply no data being retrieved from the dataset so nothing to print. If I go back to the product file and comment out most of the components then it will (99% of the time) 'unbreak' itself and the dataset gets created. Once it has started working again I can then uncomment the rest of the components and it will recompile with all the dataset data present ... until the next time. Has anyone seen anything like this? I'm using Lua to retrieve the dataset info and, when it goes wrong, the dataset returned by Lua is a nil value. But the .tua file (not a .tuc) has the full dataset structure included. I can't produce an MWE as I have no idea what to remove and include - it doesn't seem to matter which components are left or removed in order to fix the problem just as long as several ar removed. In other words, it's not one component file causing the problem. And sometimes commenting out just two components will fix it, othertimes I have to do most of them. It could be a caching issue - when it goes wrong, reprocessing the product file causes much less to scroll past on the TeXShop log display. And when it is fixed, the first successful run has a much longer log, suggesting that more is being processed. So, unless someone else has seen the above and has the solution, the first question is: does LMTX cache the result of previous runs to save reprocessing if nothing has changed? If so, how can I force a full reprocess or remove those cache files? I'm using TeXShop to edit and compile, but running "context product_filename.tex" from the command line makes no difference. \doifemptyelse issue?

The following MWE gives "false false" instead of "false true". named destinations in /GoToR

Dear list, imagine I have a PDF document (named "whatever.pdf") such as the one generated from this source: \setupinteraction[state=start, focus=standard] \starttext \dorecurse{5} {\chapter[\recurselevel]{Chapter} \section[sec-\recurselevel]{Section}} \stoptext This source only samples PDF documents not generated with ConTeXt. This means that no .tuc file may be available and named destinations may contain only digits. Then I need to access some named destinations from a document such as: \setupinteraction[state=start, focus=standard] \starttext \dorecurse{5} {\goto{Chapter \recurselevel}[whatever.pdf::\recurselevel], \goto{section \recurselevel}[whatever.pdf::sec-\recurselevel]\par} \stoptext Sorry, but after reading again lpdf-ano.mkxl I’m not sure whether I can get named destinations (such as "/D (4)" or "/D (sec-3)") and how I could get them. hard clipping in ConTeXt?

Dear list, I have the following sample: \setuplayout[page] \starttext \clip[hoffset=5mm, voffset=5mm, width=15mm, height=15mm] {\externalfigure[xml-mkiv.pdf]} \stopnotmode \stoptext Using PDF.js (from current Firefox), xpdf, Evince, mupdf-gl, the viewer is able to find "dealing", altough it cannot be displayed. Okular and Sumatra (with Wine in Linux) are not able to find "dealing". Is there any way to have a hard clipping in ConTeXt? I mean, that only the contents of the clipped section is added to the resulting PDF document? Many thanks for your help, Pablo

In placing \externalfigure[file] I observe the figure is placed with its bottom on the baseline, thus: [externalfigure] --------------------------- baseline I looked into the option list of setupexternalfigure but could not find one whereby the location with respect to the baseline is either top, bottom or center. Such an option might not exist and then I must program around it. But I prefer to use something that is already there and fits my needs. yours sincerely dr. Hans van der Meer

I guess context.quotation is executed immediately and doesn’t return anything? How can I do this? Hraban

Wiki problem - labels missing from the main diagram on the Page Layout page

When I go to the page layout page on the Contextgarden wiki <https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Page_Layout> the "typesetting areas" diagram is missing its text labels. If I click on the diagram the Wiki takes me to the underlying layout.svg file and then I /do/ see the labels. This happens in both Safari and Firefox. Several math features broke for me in new Debian version

Dear Friends, I am a regular user of ConTeXt. A recent upgrade of ConTeXt in Debian broke things for me. The bug report is here: https://bugs.debian.org/1055233 but I have reproduced the gist here: Upon upgrading to ConTeXt 2023.05.05.20230730+dfsg-2, several math features seem to break for me. Adobe Source Typescript With Design Sizes

About Adobe Source ================== The fonts are available on GitHub [1]. They are the descendants of the Source {Serif,Sans,Code} Pro fonts described in the type-imp-source.mkiv typescript available in the ConTeXt distribution. Due to major changes, Serif Pro was renamed into Serif 4 in, well, its version 4 [2] (that’s the version that introduces design sizes, a.k.a. optical sizes), and Sans Pro was renamed into Sans 3 [3]. There is also a medium weight, that selects the regular versions of Serif and Sans, but the medium version of Mono (just slightly bolder than the regular one, presumably for better on-screen rendering in terminals). Design sizes can be disabled by adding -nodesignsize- to the typescript name: adobesource-nodesignsize-extralight, etc. Finally, I thought it would be cool to over-engineer the typescript a little bit and provide direct access to the design sizes (in case one would want a narrower version for body text, or a bolder and more expanded version for titles, etc.). Here they are, again in all their weights: adobesource-caption-extralight, adobesource-smtext-light, adobesource-subhead, adobesource-display-bold, etc. The ‘regular’ design size is accessed by simply using adobesource-nodesignsize. Questions For the Experts ========================= To avoid a gigantic typescript file with a lot of duplication, I offloaded the font filename calculation to a Lua function (see attached adobesource.lua). I initially wanted to put the Lua code inside the typescript, but then I had all sorts of weird Lua compilation errors. The very same code works fine when included in a normal document though. Could it be that typescripts are processed in some special mode that doesn’t like Lua syntax? As a workaround, I put the code in an external file and require it from inside the typescript. In the goodies file, I use what I believe is the largest possible font size that can be used in ConTeXt (16,383pt) to select the Display design size. Otherwise, text above that size will fall back to the default, regular design size. Now, since I use the goodies file only when design sizes are enabled, I thought I could make it more robust by using AdobeSource4Display as a default, that is, for any size above 16.5pt. However, if I mix design sizes enabled and disabled in a document, the disabled one seems to be using the goodies file even though it’s not mentioned in the typescript. Any idea of why? I have reinstalled context in case there was some software issue but it is still the same. Combining python and lua

I’d like to be able to convert the angles in degrees into radians (with math notation) and to compute the trigonometric function leading to sin(pi/4) = 1/2, or cos(pi/6) = sqrt(3)/2 and display it in math mode. Hi, I wanted to use dashed lines as folding marks, but apparently they only work with pencircle, or at least not with pensquare. overprinting black

Hi, esp. Hans, while finalizing the PDF for our latest book, I recognized a color problem: The general black color is rendered not 100% black in CMYK mode, but in all channels (converted RGB, I guess). With \definecolor[cmykblack][k=1] \setupcolors[textcolor=cmykblack] this is ok, but the color mode is knockout instead of overprint (as it would be usual for CMYK black). That means, black text on a photo is white in the other plates. If I define \definecolor[cmykblack][k=1,a=multiply,t=1] \setupcolors[textcolor=cmykblack] it’s ok in some places, but it messes up many unrelated places, e.g. most images then also use this transparency mode. \setupcolors[intent=overprint] has no effect, as far as could find (while we have a warning in the wiki, that you should use this only for grayscale works). Testing whether an XML attribute exists

Hi, I am typesetting a very simple address list whose source is written in XML. Typesetting choices need to be made dependent on the presence of various attributes; consider the following <family> element. <family surname="Boer" prefix="den"> If the prefix attribute exists I'l like the name to appear as, e.g. 'Boer, den." The several XML attribute testing functions in the XML manual appear to discriminate on an attribute's value. I tried \xmldoifnotatt in an attempt to say, "TRUE if prefix does not match an empty string", since I am not interested in the attribute's value but only whether or not it exists. The code below doesn't work. If someone who knows why it doesn't work would enlighten my ignorance I would be most grateful. How can I use a variable for a MetaPost coordinate ?

Hello list, I want to draw lines on a page. I want to pass my line coordinates as a percent of \width or \textheight, rather than as millimetres. So that if I change the page size I don't need to change the coordinates. The MWE below compiles but the pdf does not have any lines drawn on it. Attempting to Generate PDF/A in LMTX

I have saved the *.icc files in ~/context-osx-arm64/tex/texmf-context/colors/icc/profiles per the instructions. workaround for wrapping SHA512

Problems with line numbered program listings

I'm trying to typeset some program listings with annotations alongside. I've tried both columns and tabulate but both have (different) issues: 1) Plain \typefile won't allow the line numbers to be in the text - they stay in the margin whch I don't want. 2) \typefile using a \definedtyping name does work and works in \columns as well. This is great until my listing is too long to fit on a page and then I'd rather have the column continue onto the next page but \columns balances of course. 3) \tabulate allows a single cell to continue down over the page exactly as I'd like, but the line numbers disappear altogether. (And it has to be a single cell because the program listings are in source files that I want to include using \typefile rather than re-enter to avoid typos.) I struggle using the unit Farad (unit of capacitance): \starttext %% prints 10 10 ft \unit{10 F} \unit{20 ft} \registerunit [F=Farad] \setupunittext [Farad=F] %% prints 10 F 20 F⋅t \unit{10 F} \unit{20 ft} \stoptext When registering Farad as new unit it messes up feet. This looks like a bug to me, since “20 ft” does not contain a capital “F” and units are case-sensitive. How to use Farad correctly without messing up other units? 2nd issue: The prefix “µ” is not recognised: \starttext %% prints 10 nm 20 30 µm \unit{10 nm} \unit{20 µm} \unit{30 um} \stoptext I would expect “20 µm” to produce the correct result. Chemistry in LMTX

I tried to update https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Chemistry, since nearly all of the links were dead, and I couldn’t find any documentation about \chemical / \startchemical. In the wiki page you can see that there’s still some working code for chemistry, but it looks very broken. ppchtex.mkiv is apparently still code from 1996 (and can’t work, since neither PicTeX nor PStricks are supported in LMTX any more). chem-str.lua seems to be an updated version by Alan & Hans Did I miss something? Offline documentations

Is there a way to view the documentations offline? Sort of the way the Python docs work, where you could just search for a subject and it will function regardless of internet connection. If it's not yet working, I could contribute some of my time if it's not that a heavy of a task. Something like this would be convient, since some like to search by topic. Though since we probably have the common ground of liking writing, we, or most of us, prefer referring to current manuals out there.

In the wiki, if I click a link to check a source code file (for example https://source.contextgarden.net/tex/context/base/mkiv/m-catchword.mkiv) I get a blank page with a very long list of source files on the left. If I search for the file with my browser's ctrl+f on that page, it returns zero results. I'm using Chrome. It happens for every link to source files. Not sure if it's a problem with my setup, but I have noticed that before, in different machines. Finding the position of an image on the page.

Hello list, Can I find the position of an image on the page after I have placed the image with \externalfigure? For example, the top, left corner of the image might be 50 mm in from left side of page and 120 mm down from the top of the page. I know I can use \getfiguredimensions to find information about the placed image, but it does not give me the position of the image. Thank you Peter Hopcroft

Two column text that ends near the foot of a page can push the next line into the footer rather than starting a new page. Hi, The `align` parameter of `\setupformulas` is ignored in mathalign. I did a test with Windows 10. Installed a fresh copy from the garden, Got the GFS Didot font from Google Fonts, and installed it system-wide (C:\Windows\fonts). After that, I ran mtxrun --script fonts --reload Then tried the pattern suggested but did not work. Toggling the symbol for the zero-width joiner and related Unicode control characters

Dear gang, Within a font, relevant Unicode control characters such as the zero-width joiner usually have symbolic representation, but in printing the symbols are usually suppressed, while the effect of each character is maintained. In some text editors, such as Windows Notepad (Uniscribe), there is the option "Show Unicode control characters" which toggles the symbols and keeps the effects. I seem to recall that ConTeXt has/had a similar mechanism for toggling the symbols for Unicode control characters but cannot find it. Does anyone know or recall where the symbol-toggling mechanism is? If not, what would be the simplest way to implement it? Here is a MWE (note that the three control chars might be invisible in your email client): ============== \startTEXpage[offset=1em] \definedfont[almfixed at 14pt] ZWJ: ‌ ZWNJ: ‍ NBSP: \stopTEXpage ============== In Notepad, all three control characters can be turned on or off at once. problems with comments

Hi, I wanted to use PDF comments to leave questions to the author/editor in the correction PDF. Unfortunately, the comment is always empty, regardless if \comment{} or \startcomment. Also, the comment always inserts space into the text, I’d like to avoid that; the option "space=no" doesn’t help. The "author" setting is shown, but as soon as I click on the comment, it changes to my user name. (Might depend on the viewer, but I get the same behavior from Adobe and Apple.) "title" and "subtitle" settings are handled differently by viewers, that doesn’t matter. "location=inmargin": the symbol is at the edge of the text, but not in the margin. streams reversed?

I am making some progress with a bilingual text using the streams mechanism suggested by Wolfgang: https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Columns, but see below. The aim has been to have en and vi on facing pages (en left, vi right). It works correctly for the Foreword in two languages (en, vi) in frontmatter. When I come to bodymatter and Chapter 1, again it works, except that the positions of the languages are reversed, so I end up with vi on the left and en on the right. By Chapter 2 we are back to the correct position once more (en left and vi right). I want to know why this is happening, and if I can prevent it happening. I am using the code you can see below, except that instead of \startoutputstream[one] and \startoutputstream[two] etc. I am using [en-front][vi-front], and then in bodymatter [en-chap1][vi-chap1] etc. etc. with the relevant repetitions of these identifiers where needed. I assume that to get a degree of synchronization I need to use this approach for each set of chapters. But I cannot understand why the languages alternate their starting page positions each chapter. There are other issues I have to solve, but first of all I wish to resolve this one. Different behavior of \clf_lastypos vs \clf_lastxpos

Hi, I am trying to debug an unexpected behavior with tikz reported on tex.se: https://tex.stackexchange.com/q/696136/323 The attached file shows what is going wrong (without using tikz). For some reason, there is an extra \relax written to file after `\the\numexp\clf_lastypos\relax` (there is no such relax after `\the\numexpr\clf_lastxpos\relax`). rotation weirdness

I encountered something weird, that I cannot explain. It could be an error, but I was not able to pinpoint this. It seems as if the \rotate macro plays havoc with the macro definitions used to set the color of the frame and an outside title. Placing the outside title before the rotate proves that the call to \rotate is the culprit. I enclose an MWE with a little jpeg figure as illustration. yours sincerely dr. My feeling at the moment is that this might be about the only way one could go ahead in a production situation, and yes, I am familiar with PDF tools that can achieve this, though it is effectively stepping aside from ConTeXt and working with PDF. For that matter I can easily go ahead with a commercial program that solves all the problems thus far indicated. I think it is true to say that at the moment, the streams mechanism is far too klunky to be able to use it extensively. For a handful of pages (and especially if the two streams re absolutely equal in length) it is workable. Beyond that, at least for the moment, it is not, and I am afraid I do not have the luxury of time to try to refine it. Your efforts, Bruce, are hugely appreciated, but also confirm the difficulties faced thus far. As an aside, I've tried to use the < command > key to provide my own command, but while \define works here (but ignores \blank), \def gives me an error. Why is that? Hi, In https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Tabulate#Spanning_Multiple_Pages the wiki has "internal error: convert failed". Removing \color[red] from \setuptabulate in that example gives a working example (at least in a separate file on my machine). I tried changing the title specification to title={\color[red]{Fenchurch St. Paul}}, as well as title={{\color[red]{Fenchurch St. Paul}}}, but both of these reward me with a runaway context process. Can someone point out the correct way to do what the wiki intended? Thanks. Jim P.S. Bonus question: should an incorrect use of color really cause an (apparent) infinite loop, or is that a second issue which deserves to be on some to-do list?

Hi, I am creating a document which is divided with the unnumbered levels (\title, \subject, ...). I would like a table of contents showing the names and page numbers, something like Blah blah blah 2 Blah blah 4 ... However, notwithstanding what I see in https://wiki.contextgarden.net/index.php?title=Titles&mobileaction=toggle_v… I can't get this to happen with unnumbered divisions. The above wiki reference says "the following might do that trick" but I think "might" is the keyword, since even the wiki doesn't show the "No number" entry in the \completecontent. I find it hard to imagine that I am the only Context user who wants to do this. Can anyone point me in the direction of a working example? And am I misinterpreting the wiki, or is the wiki page broken? Thanks. Jim

how to define an environment with key=value arguments

Hi, for an involved image placement (full page image starting each chapter, several stacked elements), I’d like an environment that accepts key-value arguments, like \startMyFigure[page=left,title={My caption}] \externalfigure[dummy]… \stopMyFigure I don’t think that a real float makes sense, even if the interface looks similar, since it’s always a full page in a fixed place, I need no numbering and can place the caption myself. Does it make sense to use \definestartstop? How would I “plugin“ the argument handling? I am using the following to print some verbatim text in a frame. At the right side, it keeps running out of the frame, is there a way to prevent this with the MWE? textwide float too wide for text width

Hi, a current observation: I have some floats with text wide images like: \startplacefigure[location=top] \externalfigure[dummy][width=\textwidth] \stopplacefigure These were moved to the last page until I decreased the width minimally (by 0.1 mm). So I guess there’s a rounding error somewhere. If that’s not obvious or a known feature, I’ll try to come up with a minimal example – I encountered it within a columnset, but don’t know if it’s related to columns or my own dimensions (\measure). Vertical Space between Text and Itemize List

To get a packed itemize list I use this in the preamble \setupitemgroup [itemize] [packed] To get less vspace between the text and the first item, i changed it to this \setupitemgroup [itemize] [packed, nowhite] now there is indeed no whitespace. Is there a more granular way to place just a little vertical whitespace between the text and the first item?

XML, multiple spaces encoded as %20 get merged into one space

Hi, I have the example below that uses the three images in the attachment. For some reason multiple spaces encoded as %20 get merged into a single %20. The first image (<test two20spaces.pdf>) does not get included even though the name is correct. The second image (<test one space.pdf>) gets included. Filename is correct. The third image (<test not two space.pdf>) gets included even though the actual file name does not contain two spaces (but @xlink:href does). Any ideas what is going on here? Then, in the case of the link, the two %20 end up as a single %20. Sorry for the obscure question, but how can I access this with "\goto{link to external}[a(b).pdf]"? I guess there may be some Lua magic, but I cannot write a proper ":gsub("%(", "%\%("))".
