Subject: Leading spaces verbatim

Good day to everyone, I'm trying to make a verbatim block of text with copiable leading spaces so that students can just copy my Python code snippets into their IDE. I believe the question has been asked before (though I confess I can't find the right search terms to find the answer again). I get that PDFs are not the optimal way to give code to students (which is why for longer snippets, I just give them the files or I attach them into the PDF), but for short snippets it would be so much simpler... I recently stumbled onto this article: https://www.overleaf.com/latex/examples/using-luatex-to-convert-interword-g… wherein the author replaces the TeX glue with spaces and kerning. I was wondering whether the same idea could be applied within the typing environment but making a primitive verbatim environment using \obeylines and \obeyspaces did not result in copiable spaces. Unfortunately, whilst I have some concepts of how luatex works on the input file, the step wherein a pdf is formed is fairly misterious to me, meaning I can't really understand the Lua code from said article (https://gist.github.com/Semptum/076cca71bc251ebe19ff96c5effca3cb). Hence, my three questions: - Is it even realistic to make such a typing environment? - What would be the best path to do so? - Can someone recommend some reading material specifically about this kind of typographical adjustments using LuaTex? Stuff like adjusting the glyphs's position, replacing characters with combined characters etc... Sorry if that's a bit vague, as you can see from the rest of the message, I never really went too deep into the later stages of the TeX pipeline. Best regards, Andre

how to change metadata halfway through document

Am trying to understand how best to change the title metadata in headertext halfway through a document that has two parts: Constitutions and Regulations. My first attempt (did not work) \startsetups[headertext] \startdocument [metadata:title={Regulations}] \stopsetups \setupheadertexts [ ] [{\getmarking[chapter]\hskip1em \pagenumber}] [{\pagenumber \hskip1em \setup{headertext}}] [ ] My second attempt (quite crass, but it works!!) was to create a second \startdocument within the main \startdocument (obviously closing it towards the end but before the main \stopdocument), this time with [metadata:title={Regulations}] instead of the original [metadata:title={Constitutions}]. However, I have a strong feeling this is not a very elegant solution! Thoughts? Julian

How to create multi-line headers and footers?

I am creating a template for a 1-page newsletter. At the top of every page is a huge title, below which is a block with a brief introduction to the newsletter. The body is just 200-300 words each issue--I edit it such that all of the content fits on just one-side, one page. Finally, in the footer, is contact information and some other closing details. ======TITLE <-- big title ............ <-- introduction paragraph ............ ====== -------------------- <-- body text ----------======............ <-- message in footer ====== I tried placing that all into a macro called "\introduction" then calling with this \setupheadertexts[\introduction] It seems when placing the macro inside \setupheadertexts, the text is reduced to a single line. Any code involving \frames{} doesn't seem to work normally. Its all compressed to a single line, then centered. How can I put a mult-line frame or multi-line text in the headers and footers? --Joel

Can ConTeXt print specific paragraph and sentences from an input file?

Assuming I have an input file with an essay: \starttext \input essay \stoptext Is there any command to tell ConTeXt to print a specific sentence, e.g. the first sentence from paragraph 2, or the last sentence from paragraph 1, etc? --Joel

Re my earlier question on footnotes by defined paragraph: \start...stoplocalfootnotes and \placelocalfootnotes largely solves the issue (had forgotten that option), but I am still getting the footnotes repeated at the bottom of the page. I am obviously missing a setting. There are parts of this text that do require the usual footnotes at the bottom, so I would not want to turn off this option permanently. I have tried \setupnotation[footnote][display=no] but that is not working. Julian

footnotes by paragraph?

Here's a tricky one (for me) that I haven't been able to work out. I am dealing with a set of constitutions that I am organizing with a paragraph definition \defineparagraphs[Two][n=2] \setupparagraphs[Two][1][width=.2\textwidth,style=\bfx,after={\blank},align=flushleft] \setupparagraphs[Two][2][width=.77\textwidth,style=normal,after={\blank}] But I need to get the footnotes (which all apply to [2] in each article of the constitutions) to come beneath my defined 'Two'. I do not want them to come at the bottom of the page. I thought I might be able to do it by placing \start...stopTwo within a \start...stopsection and defining \setupnotation[way=bysection] but that is not working. Any thought on how I could approach this? Julian

As with previous updates, there's no additional charge if you've already purchased licenses; you can use the same download information sent to you at the time of purchase to get the new fonts. (If you've lost the download info, you can email us at lucida-admin at tug.org.) I will append the changes for this release. The same information is also online at https://tug.org/store/lucida/NEWS.txt. To summarize, the most significant changes have been to the math fonts, especially the regular-weight LucidaBrightMathOT. Many of these changes were discussed in greater detail in the recent article about Lucida math by Hans Hagen and Mikael Sundqvist: https://tug.org/TUGboat/tb43-3/tb135hagen-lucida.pdf The four Lucida Sans fonts and the three specialized fonts (Blackletter, Calligraphy, Handwriting) are not changed at all from the last release (not even version numbers or dates). All other fonts were changed. On behalf of TUG, I thank Hans, Mikael, and Michael Sharpe, who among them did essentially all of the technical font editing for this release. And we must thank Chuck Bigelow and Kris Holmes (they approved this release, as always), without whom nothing could be done. protected macro vs protected luacall

Dear list, I have noticed a somewhat strange difference between protected macros and protected luacalls, namely that the latter cannot be expanded by \the. In the example below I define a Lua function that prints \numexpr 17\relax to the token stream and I call it once from a protected TeX macro wrapping \directlua and once from a protected luacall registered with token.set_lua. \directlua{ userdata = userdata or {} function userdata.test() tex.print("\string\\numexpr 17\string\\relax") end } \tt \protected\def\test{\directlua{userdata.test()}} \meaning\test\par \edef\x{\test}\meaning\x\par \the\test \directlua{ local t = lua.get_functions_table() t[\string#t + 1] = userdata.test token.set_lua("test", userdata.test, \string#t, "protected") } \meaning\test\par \edef\x{\test}\meaning\x\par \the\test \bye However, the second \the\test fails with the following error: ! You can't use `luacall 0' after \the. l.21 \the\test Is this asymmetry between luacalls and regular macros intended? Is there a workaround where I can have a luacall that doesn't expand inside of \edef but still expands after \the? Cheers, Henri

Printing mailing list labels

If you've ever struggled with Word's or (worse) LibreOffice's mail merge features to print a mailing list onto sticky labels then this might be of interest. I've created some macros and an example file showing how to print address labels on Avery L7160 paper (which is 7 rows of 3 labels on A4) and uploaded them here. <https://context-address-labels.sourceforge.io/> Features: - full control over label content (can even differ from one label to the next if necessary) - easily use up a part-used sheet of labels to avoid waste - read address data from a CSV file - easily support different address formats for different international destinations - option to preview on plain paper - even label your labels in the page header so you remember why you printed them!
