mp-geo Metapost package with ConTeXt

Hello ConTeXters, I’d like to use the mp-geo Metapost package with ConTeXt to draw simple globes viewed from various directions. The package is here: https://melusine.eu.org/syracuse/poulecl/mp-geo/ It looks like the last update was 2008 and I don’t read French, so I though my chances of getting anything to work were pretty small. However, I was pleasantly surprised that this MWE found the mp-geo package, the necessary Metapost files in the ConTeXt installation, and the data files. \starttext \startMPcode input mp-geo; figure(-10u,-10u,10u,10u); Mercator(3,48,30); fin; end \stopMPcode \stoptext While all of the files were found, it did not produce a globe. Instead I got an error complaining about an invalid character in the data files. This error is repeated for about 20 files (a small fraction of the total). I put the first error and its data file below. All the others are identical with different .dat files. Maybe it’s just an encoding mismatch or a hidden character I can easily delete or replace. On the other hand, maybe I shouldn't even be attempting this? 2008 is a long time ago in ConTeXt time. Feel free to tell me this project is crazy, but if you have an idea how I can make this work, I’d really appreciate it! It looks like a fun package. Thanks! composing commands

Hi, As I'm going over the commands in lmtx, I wonder if we should keep \c \d \k \r \u \v \" \' \` \^ etc ... the ones that make 'composed characters'. I think that anyone who needs them uses utf . They can be in (say) m-oldschool.mkxl or so. Objections? Hurt feelings? Sentiments? one quick remark about textext.dflt (vs textext.dlft)

Hi all, one remark, I was expecting to be allowed to use textext.dlft but finally the appropriate command appears to be textext.dflt which require to switch F and L letters. Is it on purpose ? would it make sense to have a dlft version to match LeFT ?

It doesn’t make sense to argue about this, but it’s apparently a setting (or unchangeable behavior) of your Email app. My Apple Mail 12.4 on Mojave shows the same message like attached (dark mode). Unicode normalization and Hebrew in ConTeXt

I am typesetting a document in Hebrew that includes pointing (e.g., vowels, shin and sin dots, dagesh, etc.) using ConTeXt. The Hebrew text that I want to typeset has been normalized into Unicode's NFC canonical form. It is well-known that the Unicode canonical ordering of Hebrew points conflicts with the recommended mark ordering of specific points based on their functions (see https://www.sbl-site.org/Fonts/SBLHebrewUserManual1.5x.pdf for more on this topic). Thankfully, many typesetting engines automatically reorder the points to ensure that they are combined according to the specifications of many fonts. I'm pretty sure that XeLaTeX is one of these, as it typesets Hebrew letters with multiple points correctly even when the Hebrew text is in NFC form. My question is, can ConTeXt with LuaTeX handle the same situation correctly? In the following minimal example, ConTeXt typesets pointed Hebrew correctly when the characters are in the typographically recommended order, but not when they are in Unicode canonical order: ``` %Setup Hebrew text font: \definefontfeature[f:pointedhebrew][default][ ccmp=yes, mark=yes, script=hebr ] \definefontfamily[hebrew] [rm] [SBL Hebrew] [features=f:pointedhebrew] %Set the body font: \setupbodyfont[hebrew] %Set up right-to-left alignment: \setupalign[r2l] \starttext %Characters after normalization, in Unicode canonical order (bet + segol + dagesh + final nun): בֶּן %A word with characters in typographically recommended order (bet + dagesh + segol + final nun): בֶּן \stoptext ``` I typeset this using ConTeXt version 2020.03.10, as released with TeXLive 2020. I got the SBL Hebrew font from https://www.sbl-site.org/educational/BiblicalFonts_SBLHebrew.aspx. According to the font's user manual (see the link above the MWE), the font should be able to combine the marks to form the correct glyph regardless of their order after the consonant, but that doesn't seem to be the case here. I also tried using the predefined "hebrew" featureset, but that did not change anything. Is there some other OpenType feature or featureset I need to enable to fix this, or is there some module or option I can include to get ConTeXt to typeset Unicode-normalized Hebrew as if it were ordered in the recommended way, like XeLaTeX does? I see that the uninormalize module is mentioned in the thread "XeLaTeX, LuaLaTeX, fontspec, unicode and normalization" on TeX Stack Exchange ( https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/229044/xelatex-lualatex-fontspec-un…) can that be used with ConTeXt? Footnotes in columns

I can no longer print the footnotes when I using columns in LTMX. If I remove the \{start|stop}columns, it works fine. Code document and simpleslides and create in one go the document with simpleslides added

Is there an easy way to write a Context document and also code simpleslides in the same document so that the simpleslides are automatically added to the document as for example an appendix? Ie one tex document with Context code, perhaps with some \input and something like a two-pass job. I was thinking if the simpleslides could be saved as a number of png images and then with the recurse add them to the document with placefigure. Jeroen

Strange new behaviour of the mailing list

Hi all, I noticed that beginning July 27th, the messages distributed by the ConTeXt mailing list appear to be from Mailing list for ConTeXt users without the actual name of the sender appearing. It may be dependent on the mail client I am using (Mail.app on MacOS 11.4), but I wonder whether something has changed on mailing list server, and whether if there is something I can do to have the old behaviour (which was convenient when one wanted to follow up mails from some specific contributors). Also has anybody else noticed this change? Thanks in advance for any hint. Best regards: Otared
