Unicode normalization and Hebrew in ConTeXt

I am typesetting a document in Hebrew that includes pointing (e.g., vowels, shin and sin dots, dagesh, etc.) using ConTeXt. The Hebrew text that I want to typeset has been normalized into Unicode's NFC canonical form. It is well-known that the Unicode canonical ordering of Hebrew points conflicts with the recommended mark ordering of specific points based on their functions (see https://www.sbl-site.org/Fonts/SBLHebrewUserManual1.5x.pdf for more on this topic). Thankfully, many typesetting engines automatically reorder the points to ensure that they are combined according to the specifications of many fonts. I'm pretty sure that XeLaTeX is one of these, as it typesets Hebrew letters with multiple points correctly even when the Hebrew text is in NFC form. My question is, can ConTeXt with LuaTeX handle the same situation correctly? In the following minimal example, ConTeXt typesets pointed Hebrew correctly when the characters are in the typographically recommended order, but not when they are in Unicode canonical order: ``` %Setup Hebrew text font: \definefontfeature[f:pointedhebrew][default][ ccmp=yes, mark=yes, script=hebr ] \definefontfamily[hebrew] [rm] [SBL Hebrew] [features=f:pointedhebrew] %Set the body font: \setupbodyfont[hebrew] %Set up right-to-left alignment: \setupalign[r2l] \starttext %Characters after normalization, in Unicode canonical order (bet + segol + dagesh + final nun): בֶּן %A word with characters in typographically recommended order (bet + dagesh + segol + final nun): בֶּן \stoptext ``` I typeset this using ConTeXt version 2020.03.10, as released with TeXLive 2020. I got the SBL Hebrew font from https://www.sbl-site.org/educational/BiblicalFonts_SBLHebrew.aspx. According to the font's user manual (see the link above the MWE), the font should be able to combine the marks to form the correct glyph regardless of their order after the consonant, but that doesn't seem to be the case here. I also tried using the predefined "hebrew" featureset, but that did not change anything. Is there some other OpenType feature or featureset I need to enable to fix this, or is there some module or option I can include to get ConTeXt to typeset Unicode-normalized Hebrew as if it were ordered in the recommended way, like XeLaTeX does? I see that the uninormalize module is mentioned in the thread "XeLaTeX, LuaLaTeX, fontspec, unicode and normalization" on TeX Stack Exchange ( https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/229044/xelatex-lualatex-fontspec-un…) can that be used with ConTeXt? Footnotes in columns

I can no longer print the footnotes when I using columns in LTMX. If I remove the \{start|stop}columns, it works fine. Hi, I use the lua function img.scan{filename}, but in lmtx I get "attempt to index a nil value (global 'img')", so I guess this got renamed or moved? HR

A not so short introduction to ConTeXt Mark IV

Hello to all: Two months ago I informed to the list that I had written an introduction in Spanish to ConTeXt Mark IV. This interested several people, and in order to increase their potential audience, a member of this list (native English speaker) has proceeded to translate my text into English. It is precisely the members of this list who need no introduction at all, but it can sometimes be useful to help someone get started with the fascinating typesetting system that is ConTeXt. (programme attached) There were some interesting talks and presentations that should get preserved in our current journal (to be distributed at the meeting in Bassenge this fall). Also, additional articles are always welcome – there were a lot of interesting new features and solutions since then. So far, I/we got only one(!) article, by Taco on MetaPost. Please don’t let me/us down and hand in your articles until end of July (but ASAP)! @Harald: Please send the latest version of your German report, too! I’ll translate it into ConTeXt. Proper ligatures in Malayalam

Hi, I tried to make a document in Malayalam, an Indian language. However, the ligatures don't form as expected. A minimal example is \mainlanguage[ml] \definefontfamily [malayalam] [ss] [Rachana] [features=malayalam-one] \definefontfeature[default] [mode=node,kern=yes, liga=yes,tlig=yes, ccmp=yes,language=dflt, protrusion=quality, expansion=quality] \setupbodyfont [malayalam] \starttext അദ്ധ്യായം \stoptext What setting am I missing? LMTX: different output if dots are used in the file name

names of cached images

Hello list, using conversion=gray.pdf in lmtx the cached images' names have some string in their name. I thought it's a name of random sequence of luatex cache, but the string is the same on other machines and I don't know, where it comes from. mkiv used to have m_k_i_v_ string there. hacker.pdf = source image hacker_jpg_c60ccda70ef92e32d7a6334f31c23259.gray.pdf = cached linux hacker_jpg_c60ccda70ef92e32d7a6334f31c23259.gray.pdf = cached win MWE \starttext \externalfigure[hacker] [cache=./, conversion=gray.pdf] \stoptext Is it intended behavior? Different authorconversion for citation alternatives and bibliographic entries

Hi there, My university has special requirements for the theses I submit. Layout, fonts etc. are pretty straightforward to set up in ConTeXt. The one part I'm struggling with is citations / bibliography. I have to use the german citation style with footnotes. Essentially the first time I cite something, I have to put the full entry in a footnote. From the second time on, I only have to put a shorter entry in the footnotes. I have two problems: 1. I created the publ-imp-deu.lua and publ-imp-deu.mkvi files. If I put them into the ~/bin/context/tex/texmf-context/tex/context/base/mkiv/ directory, I get the following two lines in the log: ``` publications > unknown library 'deu' publications > no data definition file 'publ-imp-deu.lua' for 'deu' ``` If I put them into the directory where my thesis is, they seem to get recognized, but I would very much like to reuse them and not have to copy them to each project directory. What am I doing wrong? 2. Entries in the bibliography and fist time citations must have 'normal' authorconversion, while consequent citations must have 'normalshort'. For consequent citations I defined the 'authortitle' alternative. In the thesis I have: ``` \usebtxdataset[default][literature.bib] \usebtxdefinitions[deu] \setupbtx[deu] ``` A snippet from the publ-imp-deu.mkvi: ``` \definebtx [deu:list] [deu] [authorconversion=normal] \definebtx [deu:cite] [deu] [authorconversion=normalshort, alternative=authortitle] \startsetups btx:deu:list:book {\sc \btxflush{author}}\btxcolon \btxflush{title} \btxdoif{subtitle}{\btxperiod\btxflush{subtitle}}\btxperiod \btxflush{address}\btxcolon \btxflush{publisher} \btxflush{year} \btxdoif{series}{ (\btxflush{series} \btxflush{volume})}\btxperiod \stopsetups ``` In the setup and definition, the fields I defined do get into the citation correctly, but the authorconversion remains 'normal'. If I comment out the lines which set up 'normal' authorconversion for the list, everything, including the bibliography and 'entry' type citations get 'normalshort'.
